I love this book because Brontë loves this book. And Brontë loves sharks, and this book is the reason Brontë loves sharks (interesting that Zombies are her favourite monster and sharks are her favourite animal, isn't it?). And I can see why.

Anne Schreiber doesn't dumb things down for the kids. She brings them along with her in a conversation about sharks, and when she talks about predators and prey, or cartilege, or serrated teeth, she takes the time (in little side blurbs) to explain what she's going on about. I also dig the little fill in the blanks paragraph on the inside back cover. What a great way for a kid to contextualize and use the words they've learned. Nice touch.

So Schreiber's writing coupled with amazing National Geographic photographs makes National Geographic Readers Sharks a winning combination. The perfect accompaniment to a hot shower, or a great way to instill love of marine life into your favourite little girl or boy.

This book is great for young readers with under water interests. It gives an in depth look at the king of the sea and has a lot to teach readers. The photos and words in the book give a lot of information on the anatomy of these beasts, their environment, and some of their habits as carnivores. It is an excellent choice for any children able to read with interest in sharks.

This National Geographic kids book is a great informational text for 3-5 classrooms that gives readers a better view into the life of a shark. This text provides readers with a look into a shark's world with interesting and exciting facts about sharks and their environments. This book provides information about the history of the shark and also explores the way sharks capture their prey in the wild. "Sharks!" analyzes how unique of an animal the shark is and gives readers many details about their lives.
I could incorporate this informational text into a lesson about features of non-fiction texts. Students could compare and contrast how features in a non-fiction text compare and contrast with features of a fiction text. I would begin by engaging students in a whole class discussion about what they notice about the text and how this differs from the fiction books they read. As a class, we could then fill out a compare and contrast chart using these 2 types of texts. This is a fun, engaging way to introduce students to lesson on the different types of text, including fiction and non-fiction. Another way I could use this text is to introduce a science unit, or incorporate science standards into my students' reading block. This could be used to introduce a unit on ecosystems, how we can use them to classify organisms and the interdependence between an animal and its environment. Students could use this book to compare and contrast the shark's environment to different environments such as grasslands or lakes. In addition to this, students will analyze how the shark's environment impacts their diet, the way they hunt and why they're built the way they are in terms of their anatomy. Students could do this using graphic organizers to organize their thoughts and information and collaborate in small groups with their classmates.
This was a WOW book for me because it provides so much information to students in a fun way using real pictures. Students can read this book and might not even realize how much they're learning because the facts in the book are so exciting and presented in such an engaging way. This book is a great tool for teachers to use in order to teach students about comprehension and different types of texts, while integrating science content.

Sharks by Anne Schreiber is a nonfiction book that children can read from ages five and up. It has not won any awards, but it provides kids who take an interest in ocean's creatures, basic information about sharks. For example, their habitat, food supply, and different types of sharks.

I gave it five stars because I felt this simple book explained so much information I didn't even know. I think the simplicity of the book will be helpful for children. I also enjoyed the side texts or questions asked in the text. I think it makes learning more interactive, which has been proven to make kids improve their learning skills. The book also touched on the fear of a shark attack and had a first hand encounter on someone who was attacked by a shark but assured readers that it is rare for a share attack to occur. Anne Schreiber did a good job explaining the general information on sharks and really makes me wish she could write college level text books because I felt that this book did a better job explaining sharks than most documentaries I watched about ocean's creatures. Hence, I rated this book five stars. No complaints!

I was actually pleasantly surprised by this informational text about sharks. I gave it all 5 stars because I felt this simple 30 page book explained so much information I didn't know. I think the simplicity of the book will be helpful for children. The text itself isn't anything a child who is 5-8 in age can't understand, which makes for learning to be more effective. I particularly enjoyed the side texts or questions asked in the text. I think it makes learning more interactive, which has been proven to make kids learn better. The book isn't meant to have a plot or conflict because it is more of an informative book so I can't critique it for something like that. The book also touched on the fear of a shark attack and had a first hand encounter on someone who was attacked by a shark but assured readers that it is rare for a share attack to occur. Anne Schreiber did a good job explaining the general information on sharks and really makes me wish she could write college level text books.

Sharks is a book all about shark facts. There are over 460 different species of sharks, these different types of sharks have different appearances, sizes, locations, and water depth. Sharks have been around for 450 million years and have changed overtime, read the book if you want to know how they have changed.
I really enjoyed this book, but I did not think I would. Sharks was filled with interesting facts, and I learned a handful of information. The book was well written and jam packed with facts. The pictures helped make the text come alive on the page, for it helped me picture what the book was describing.
This book would be a very helpful resource in the classroom since it is nonfiction. My first thought was to read the book and have the students make a vendagram . The three sections would be; what I already knew, what I learned, and what I still want to know. The book covered a ton of facts, but I like the idea of students researching even more facts that the book did not cover.

This book talks about different kinds of sharks. First it starts by explaining that sharks are fish, but they are not like most fish and what makes them different from most fish. Then it talks about shark pups and how some of them are born. Then it goes on to talk about their teeth, it explains that different kinds of sharks have different kinds of teeth and it describes each of the types of teeth. The book then talks about how there are 375 different kinds of sharks and which ones are the scariest, fastest, smallest, and weirdest. It also mentions the bad part of sharks, which are shark attacks. I gave this book 5 stars because I personally love sharks. I also liked that there were picture examples for each detail they were describing. There were also arrows that pointed to some of the things that were being described and the names of each kind of shark that were labeled near them.

Well, this informational text was supposed to be a lot better than it was. It is a very easy text, for kindergarten to 2nd grade students. I would incorporate it into a science lesson for oceans and then tie it into a geography lesson as well. It never fails when you begin teaching about the oceans, kids immediately want to talk about sharks, so it would be a great text to talk about sharks with them. It has some very big vocabulary words and they are a great way to go into some scaffolded lessons and use some graphic organizers to help your students learn the text a little better. But part of me feel like the vocabulary is too much for the text level, although the author does define the words.
It is not really a wow book, just because it is kind of boring and touches on too many things just a little bit and not too little a lot, if that makes sense.

375, that's how many different types of sharks there are. This book taught me many cool facts about sharks that I didn't know. Like, some sharks are grown inside their mothers while others are hatched from eggs. It was also very interesting to me that the largest shark, a whale shark, has the tiniest teeth and only feeds on plankton. Sharks have a skin like sandpaper that helps them to swim faster. I won't spoil all of the facts, but this book is a good read if you're interested in learning about sharks. Like the great white shark that is considered "creepy" because of its defense mechanism that protects its eyes from prey.

All kids are interested in sharks at some point so this would be a great book to keep in your classroom for anyone who is curious.

I think this book is interesting. It seems like a couple photos are a little graphic for young children, but it definitely is a cool read. It has all different kinds of facts about sharks, and it gives a basic introduction to them for anyone that could be interested.

Classroom Ideas:
This could be an interesting read when talking about creatures that live in the ocean. It can even be used for shark week and introducing a few kinds of sharks and facts about them.

This book is a great book of many National Geographic books, it can easily grab any child’s attention and make them want to learn more. This book is about sharks and tells us all about the way their body is built, their teeth, how shark pups act, and so much more.

I gave this book 5 stars because I truly think kids can learn a lot from these National Geographic books. As well as the information provided I also like the fact that it has definitions and I think that is great for helping kids learn new words.

this book is a great book for young kids to read that has a lot of good information about sharks. I learned many things I have never heard of thanks to this book. It is short and easy to read and would be great to have in a classroom with younger students. I do not know if I would keep it in my middle school classroom, but if I got a job where I was 4th or 5th grade, I think it could be a great book to have on my shelves if students are interested.

The pictures in this book are great. They are up close of the sharks and the certain parts of the body that is being explained in the text. This book has a content page and glossary. There is also a fun story kids can fill in the blanks with the new science words they learned.

Sharks are like fish but not any fish. This fish doesn't have bones. Their skin is bumpy and rough like sandpaper. Sharks have five rows of teeth, and when they lose a tooth, the other tooth moves forward to take its place. They can even smell blood from a mile away. There are even 375 different types of sharks.

Outstanding! It gives a good amount of strong, scientific information, but is also filled with Shark related jokes. I know my nephew will adore this book because it is super nerdy in a serious and silly way.

Perfect backpack size take along book. Easy for young readers. Decent info even there isn't a lot in it. Which is to expected it's like 10 pages long. My son (4.5) has take this book everywhere for weeks and as a result I had to purchase a 2nd copy.
