Better than the first two Clare Point books, which also got three stars from me because the brilliant world-building was balanced against some serious issues I had with key characters. No major issues this time, and I did like this one, so why does it still get only three stars?

For much of the book it's just a pleasant visit with familiar friendly characters in Clare Point, Delaware during the summer, when human tourists flock to the little seaside vampire village, and there's something like a cozy murder mystery on the side but very little else happens. The carefully posed body of one tourist is found, then another. Our main character Fin Kahill, filling in for the chief of police, is stumped, but he's afraid one of his kinfolk may have gone rogue.

There's so little action in this installment that the author has two of the Rousseau brothers, who should have been edited out of book #2, make a detour on their way from New Orleans to New York to beat up poor old Regan in the only truly violent scene in this book. Arlan and Fin defend Regan, the Rousseaus take off again, and that's it. Back we go to pleasant, inconsequential village life.

Then in the last quarter of the book the mystery part takes over and the culprit is revealed; what follows forces many of the people we know, both locals and visitors, to make major life-changing decisions. The ending brings a very somber, dramatic resolution. Clearly four stars for most of the last sixty pages!

The Kahill vampires of Clare Point are almost as nice as Lynsay Sands's Argeneaus, and they're very different from other vampires you might have met. For example, they grow old like ordinary humans, but when their life cycle is over they start a new one as a clueless teenager; they don't get their memories back until they reach adulthood. So a Clare Point novel is full of amusing interactions between those teens and the adults.

Bits and pieces of the complicated world-building in this series are recapped here and there in this book, so for the whole picture let me refer you to my reviews of the first two books: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

Once again there's a romance, complete with sex scenes that advance the story (so skim, don't skip!), and once again you mustn't expect a happy ending. You're warned, of course, from the beginning that it's only a summer romance between Fin and Elena, before she and her sister's family go back to Italy, and you might be thinking that's just a romance writer's plot device. It isn't. Maybe their farewell isn't forever, but that's for future installments.

And Clare Point's wisewoman Kaleigh, still a teenager in this life cycle, is getting much closer to full maturity and the powers that come with it. Almost single-handedly, she lifts that intense final act into the four-star range (while still breaking curfew). Can you tell that Kaleigh is my favorite Clare Point character?

It surprised me just how much I enjoyed this book - no, not because the summary was lame or I heard bad stuff about it or something, paranormal het romances just aren't my thing, I prefer urban fantasies. I expected your normal, run of the mill paranormal romance, but it's more like a family saga of the Kahill sept of Clare Point. Sure, Fin and Elena are the main pairing here, but there're Mary and Victor, Kaleigh and Rob, Katy and Pete... And then there're Regan and his drug addiction, the murdered boys, the Rousseau vamps from New Orleans... And the ending - the ending really got me because I expected everything to be just fine and peachy, the way paranormal romances always end. But this one, this one was different.

(I'm also reading this series completely out of order. My boss received just the 3rd book for R&R'ing, but I'll definitely get my hands on the rest, that's for sure. Excellent book!)

Fin Kahill and the sept. a band of vampires had kicked the pirates off of an island then inhibited it. Young men started getting killed and their blood drained and they thought it was one of their own until they found out it was Fin's love interest, Elena's niece. She was destined for death by a beheading but the very young but wise Kaleigh found a more fitting punishment. They had to drain her blood and donate theirs to make her a true Kahill. She must remain on the island and become part of their sept. forever.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

CLARE POINT continues to keep me captivated and I find myself just wanting more!

As one of the Celtic Immortal sect of Kahill vampires, each member has a responsibility to keep the human race safe. The way they chose to do this is by investigating, judging and if voted, executing human serial killers, rapists, pedophiles and other monsters.

Fin Kahill is an integral member of this team. We meet Fin - Fia's younger brother and troubled bad boy Regan's twin - briefly in book #1 of the series. After Regan gets himself into some trouble during a mission, Fin is reeled back in and put on Regan babysitting duty back in Clare Point for the summer. He hates it, but makes the best of it by helping out his uncle Sean on the police force and keeping his family happy.

Like most small beachside tourist towns, Clare Point is hopping during the summer. There are numerous humans visiting and lots of activity all over town. When young men start turning up dead all of a sudden, Fin takes over the lead on the investigation. While he's looking into the murders he runs into Elena, a gorgeous older Italian woman in Clare Point on holiday with her family. Fin knows he's not suppose to have anything to do with human females, but he feels an immediate connection to Elena and figures it's the least the town can do - look the other way - especially since he's being forced to do just about everything he doesn't want to be doing.

As the murder mystery gets more and more involved, and blame gets shifted numerous times, Fin realizes that things aren't what they seem and Elena just might be in the middle of it all.

The ending of this installment was very interesting and I loved the growth and development of the 'reborn' group of Kahills - those members who have just recently died and have been reborn as 16 year olds - during the story. I especially like the development and growth of Kaleigh, the sect's wisewoman. She's starting to come into her own and I'm finding that I love her character.

The romance in this one was super steamy as well. Not that the other books were anything to sneeze at, but this one was great. I think maybe it's because I've always sort of had a thing for Fin, but it was just hot! :)

I can't wait to see which Kahill we'll learn more about next, and I'm excited to see what exciting mysterious journey V.K takes us on in the future. This is definitely a new favorite series for me and I can't wait to keep reading.

Draining

You may slit your wrist reading this book. The author created an alternate world where Kahill sept (clan) vampires are reborn as 14 year olds after living to approximate ages in their 70 to 90 yews old. They feed on deer but only need to feed once or twice monthly. They have rules like no sex with humans, no sex until age 21, and stalking or drinking human blood is forbidden. The hero Fin is almost 1600 years; yet, it appears that he acquired no common sense or wisdom. He was made a police officer to over for another vampire got gout then the chief of police (another vampire) designates Fin be the lead investigator because the chief is still trying to recover from the trauma of murders that were committed two years ago. The suspects of the murders are obvious to the reader with a possibility of 3 females yet they remain off the radar of Fin for most of the book. However the reader has to endure his internal dialogue.

There is a new family vacationing in Clare Point from Italy. Fin is attracted to the alluring, attractive Elena and he doesn't realize that she is not human (eye roll).

The reader is trapped listening to recently reborn vampires be teenagers because they don't recall their memories of their previous lives immediately.

The author I guess found it amusing that many of the Kahill sept have similar names. There are multiple woman named Mary. It's just confusing. In fact, the author mixes up names which adds to the confusion of the read. Joe Hillman is subsequently Joe Kahill.

Furthermore, the author does not transition her different scenes with a change in chapter or paragraph. One minute you are reading about two characters and in the next sentence they are gone and you are reading about other characters in a completely unrelated scene.

Regan (Fin's twin) is a recovering drug addict who is treated like an irresponsible young adult by his sister (Fia) who is two years older as well as Fin. It lends itself to immature, juvenile dialogue.

Regan has the gift of being able to transport himself short distances. He dematerializes on a bookshelf then he says that he is a little rusty. Regan has lived for almost 1600 years and he can't use his gift with more proficiency. Well for me it was not funny but served as another example of the author's inconsistency and / or no consideration for the intellect of her readers.

This read is just nonsense. It is an insult to the vampire genre. I definitely recommend that this book is skipped.

Cover:

I should start by saying this book is apart of a series and it's the 3rd in the series I wasn't aware of that when I started reading because it's a freebie on amazon, so I just want you the reader to know if you have never read the series before.

This book is about a family the Kahill sept of Clare Point. Other than Fin and Elena the main characters there is Mary and Victor, Kaleigh and Rob, Katy and Pete, Regan and his drug addiction and Fia and a few more. Fin decides to help out Uncle Sean by joining the local police force for the summer. When he joins to help out which he isn't too happy about BAM! there is a serial killer lurking in the shadows and starts taking out male tourists that are humans. Everyone is going crazy, especially when it's discovered that the serial killer is a vampire. While that's going on Fin and Elena relationship evolves, a Italian tourist to whom he's drawn to.

With saying that, the book started out good and I love Fin he is 1600 years old, love his humor as well as his family, Elena was nice as well don't want to leave her out. however, this book was a little slower starting out. While it seems to be getting interesting little things here and there would seem to drag on, but after saying that I don't want to take away from the story as I like it, it's just sometimes when it's suppose to be staying in the right lane it swerves and dip to the left if that makes sense. As I said I still like the story still up in the air if I want to try out the other books in the series.

This book focuses on Fin, Fia's younger brother and twin to Regan. Fin decides to help out Uncle Sean by joining the local police force for the summer. Little does he know but a serial killer is lurking in the shadows and starts taking out human, male tourists. Everyone is in an uproar, especially when it's discovered that the perp is a vampire! Fin also finds a love interest in Elena, a beautiful Italian tourist to whom he's drawn to like a moth to a flame. This book was a little slower than the first two and not nearly as exciting as the second book. There were some surprises of the paranormal kind. But once the killer was outed, the book kind of lost its steam. I found the way everything was resolved with the killer a bit odd. Especially, when everyone seemed okay with the punishment. The Fin and Elena story was left completely unfinished. There is definitely going to be another - when I'm not sure. However, the ending left me feeling cheated. I think the author needs to get back to concentrating on Fia, whose character was way more interesting than Fin. I don't even know what the author was thinking by not having Arlan even make a human appearance in this book. (He's a shape shifter as well). All in all the book was okay. I do like this author's writing style, with the vampire aspect on the back burner, and the serial killer in the forefront. However, the author needs to concentrate on the more interesting characters in Clare Point, like Arlan (be still my heart) and even Regan, who is definitely a bad boy who needs his own story.

I think I need to make an effort in the very near future to not read the 3rd, 4th, or 5th book in a series first. Seriously, it throws my brain out of whack and then I'm like O_o. And sometimes if I'm really lucky I'm like this O_O.

Which isn't to say this is a bad book. It isn't. I just had a lot of questions as I started unraveling the mythology and some of them weren't answered until the end-ish of the book and some of them weren't answered at all. The lack is in me, though, not the writing because (as mentioned before) I came into this series at book 3.

The biggest sticking point for me was the whole "being reborn" thing. It wasn't until the end that I realized that they were physically being reborn. As teenagers. Not a rebirth from human to vampire. Nope. They're teenagers again. Teenagers without the memories of their past lives. Which seems horribly cruel to me. Who wants to keep being dumped in a teenage body and have to go through all those awkward phases again. Torture!

My confusion aside, I loved the ambiguous ending to the book. It wasn't the usual happy ending and I thought it was refreshing. I liked the mystery and the reason behind it. I liked the characters (Oh, Regan, you idiot. *pets him*). As you can see, there was a lot of stuff I did like. I just had the confusion. And this is why reading out of order is not always a good thing. It's not always a bad thing, either. In this case, it didn't work out as well as I was hoping.

This is another of those books that I grabbed as a free read (from Kobo) not realising it was part of a series.

There are some series you have to read in order and others you can pick and choose. For me, this book fell somewhere in the middle. I was able to read it and keep up with the story and characters, but a lot of the mythology and history remained unexplained and I assume that was because it had already been covered in the earlier books that I had missed.

Although I would have liked some more of that background information, I was still able to enjoy this tale which was part paranormal romance and part murder mystery. I thought the main characters came across well and the romance between Fin and Elena was steamy without being over the top or repetitive. The pacing was also good and kept me reading until I finished the book in just one evening.

From what I could grasp of the mythology, these vampires came across as something different and fascinating and at some point in the future, I would like to try to get hold of the earlier two books in the series to find out more about them.

This book was interesting. It didnt follow the norm for Vamp books that I have read, which I liked.

About 50 pages into it, I realized that this was the third in the series. However much I liked it, I think I might have liked it more if I had read the other books first, giving more of a back history of the characters.

As much as I liked Fin, and believe me, he sounded hot. I couldnt help myself but want more action with Regan. I liked his easy going attitude, not like Fin's uptight, have to hold everything together attitude.

I enjoyed the serial killer theme, especially since love was involved in the story. I figure out who the killer was early on in the book, but it still lived up to the story.

I wished the ending would have been a bit stronger. I liked what happened to the killer. But not what happened between Fin and Elena. I have already said to much. Your just going to have to finish the book.

I didn't enjoy this book at all and found it a chore to force myself through it. The whole basic premise made no sense at all to me--so God wanted to punish this family by making them vampires--isn't that punishing humanity instead, after all they are the victims of that senseless decision? Isn't God smarter than that? I have no idea the basis of her weird theology, but surely she can do better than that. This book is just too, too dumb.

I really enjoyed this free read, which is very unexpected for me. I did not realize it was 3rd in a 4 book series ... which explains why I felt the story was lacking a lot of explanation, but still a very good read. I wasn't expecting the book to be such a mystery. The whodunit aspect of the book really kept me going. As for some other aspects of the book: These are not your typical Vampires that are in most popular reads. The abbreviations (V=Vampire HM/HF=Human male/female) are a little annoying, but easy to get over. The romance is good and well written. This was a very refreshing read, compared to other free read books.

I really like Fin Kahill, he's a vampire and in this installment, a cop. He's investigating the strange vampire murders in town. He is also dating an Italian women who is only in town for a few weeks. The Kahill's are an interesting family and Kaleigh (the wisewomen) features prominently in this one. Even Fin's twin, Regan is in this one as a recovering drug addict that Fin has to babysit. Fin definitely has his hands full between the investigation, Elena and Regan. A simple, quick read but with a serial killer on the loose, a little graphic at times.

I finally finished this book by skimming. If I could give less than one star, I would. I didn't realize it was part of a series when I got it. I don't think that should matter though. One should be able to understand what is going on or at least want to read the previous books because the story and the characters are interesting. No way I am reading the rest of this series.

I am really enjoying this series, but I just want more story of the pair ups. They just hook up in the end, and then that's it, onto next story, next person. I want more relationship development. I want to know what happened to the previous relationships. I just want MORE.

Not my cup of tea. Just couldn't get into it. That being said, I have not read the first books in the series. That may change my perception a bit, if I decide to try this author again.
