I enjoyed this one. Griff... or should I say "Gruff" - bit of an ass at times. LOL. But, sure we love them, don't we!! Rosalind. Love her spirit, her independece.

The World Cup is going to cut into my reviewing for the next month. Eventhough Ireland didn't qualify I will be stuck to the bloody telly.

Never have I ever more deservedly given a book 3 stars. Let’s do this pro/con style.

PRO:
Lovely, lively, intelligent, robust, loyal, protective, self-sufficient heroine.
CON:
Total asshole, deceitful, easy to anger, belligerent hero.

PRO:
Use of the word cock!
CON:
Use of the word honeypot! :(((

PRO:
Wonderful side characters. Hell, I cared more about the hinted at romance for the second book than I did this one.
CON:
The sex was WAY too dubiously consensual and always seemed to be the hero’s way of shutting up the heroine. And it worked. :(

PRO:
DANIELLLLLLLLL.
CON:
Daniel’s not the hero. Sigh.

Marsden Griffin “Griff” Knighton runs Knighton Trading, only second in success to the East India Company. He’s also (falsely) labeled a bastard by society (and the law?). You see, his uncle stole his parents’ marriage certificate after the chapel in Gretna Green burned down and denied him his birthright. For the majority of the book you don’t know why, and it doesn’t really make a huge difference in the end. But there ya have it.

Only now the, not so rightful, Earl of Swanlea has offered Griff proof of his legitimacy … if he’ll marry one of his daughters, The Swanlea Spinsters. (Though one of them is 17, so really, poor girl don’t deserve the label.) Griff, in no hurry to do anything to please the Earl, devises a plan that involves his right hand man, Daniel, posing as him and charming the girls while Griff searches high and low for the marriage certificate in secret.

Rosalind is the middle daughter of the Earl of Swanlea, elder sister to Juliet, and younger sister to Helena. Clearly, their father is a huge fan of Shakespeare and passed that passion onto Rosalind herself. Much of the banter between Griff and Rosalind involves quoting Mr. Shakespeare. Though, at one point, Griff notes that it wouldn’t kill Rosalind to branch out a little bit.

Rosalind and Griff have a meet cute that involves her brandishing a sword and shield and mistaking him for a gypsy (author’s words) thief. It’s actually a nice meet cute, but to say they get off on the wrong foot is an understatement. Rosalind doesn’t for one moment believe that Griff’s intentions are innocent in snooping about the estate, and Griff constantly underestimates how intelligent Rosalind is.

It is a lovely book. I just have as many quibbles with it as I have enjoyable aspects. I really cannot forgive the dubious nature of the sex scenes. Just one sex scene that wasn’t the result of trying to end and argument would’ve been so very, very nice. And one sex scene that he didn’t drag her into it by undressing her as she protested ALSO would’ve been really appreciated. Also, please never use the word honeypot for a vagina. Just. Don’t. Ever. Do. It.

But when they weren’t having sex, I enjoyed their banter and I really did love Rosalind and her sisters and Daniel. I just have never wished for a better hero quite so hard as I did with this one.

⭐️⭐️
2 stars.

➕ What I liked:

Tall curvy/full-figured heroine. 👍

Mostly takes place in the countryside/country estate.

The hero was not a philanderer.

➖ What I disliked:

The lack of confidence from the heroine in the beginning of the story. (about her body)

Annoying heroine.

Annoying hero.

Both main characters behaved more or less like bratty teenagers. (especially the heroine)

The conflict between the hero and heroine was rather contrived.

The issues with the will and the earl title and the heroines father’s deception etc. was too easily resolved.

Consent issues.

Somewhat verbose.

Sort of distantly related main characters… which is kind of icky.

This is the first book of the Swanlea Spinster series. The Earl of Swanlea has 3 daughters that he desperately wants to see settled securely before he passes. He also has regrets he plans trying to right. He sends a letter to Griff Knighton trying to get him to marry one of his daughters.

Griff, our hero, has a plan during the visit that will give him more freedom to do what he wants and be able to get to know everyone under a different guise.

I thought this book was just okay. Unfortunatley I just could NOT get into the hero. He was okay. I didn't hate him. But I didn't care about him. In fact he was a bit annoying. He had no problem lying and saying cruel things. He kept coming across like he couldn't control his sexual urges, which is usually not a negative for me! Yet with him, it just felt different. Like he didn't care he couldn't control himself. There wasn't an internal struggle of trying to stop himself that I love. He used it almost as a manipulation tactic. I think I read in another review that he used it to shut the heroine up and it always worked and I find that I totally agree with that. So because of that, the tension didn't build for me as it might have otherwise. The scenes that were there, though, I felt were really good. Descriptive and sexy, yet because of everything else it didn't reach what it should have to me.

I overall liked the heroine. I think she was spunky and really just determined to protect her family the best she could. But she also let the hero kiss her into submission repeatedly and definitely didn't make him grovel as much as I wanted.

This definitely has an enemies to lovers trope feel. They argue and are trying to win against each other with everything. Fight, kiss, fight more, kiss more. I just wasn't feeling it. However, I was left extremely curious about the sisters. My library has this whole series so I have already ordered book 2.

(This book is 1815 time period)

"Daca as putea avea o femeie ca asta doar calcandu-mi pe orgoliu, as renunta la el intr-o clipita."
Pun pariu ca poti convinge orice femeie sa-ti dea cheia."
"Gura lui era ferma si misterioasa, gura unui barbat care gustase probabil toate tainele intunericului."

The 1st book of the Swanlea Spinsters series is near perfection!
If you want the H and h quoting Shakespeare to one another, 'A Dangerous Love' has that in abundance.
The hero, Griff is a bit of an ass, quick to anger and can lie easily(ergo his disguise-but even when that is found out he keeps some of his cards to his chest which for the story is great but for being a good human being, not so great) BUT he does a nice bit of 'grovelling' or rather 'convincing' in the end which was actually really cute and pretty selfless of him.(basically risks everything he has to get her to marry him.) Besides from being an ass, he can actually be really likable-At least I wanted to flirt with him and talk about all the naughty things in Shakespeare.
The Heroine, Rosalind is completely likable-a total 'Amazon' as Griff fondly calls her if a bit naive/easily seduced but she does have Griff seducing her so it's completely understandable. I liked that she was 'Chubby' and she was insecure about it-But Griff is like 'DAMNNNNNN' every time he looks at her, totally in to all her curves and edges which, once again, is adorable. He's infatuated right from the get go-their meet cute is actually pretty awesome.(She comes at him with a sword! Loved it.)
Anyway, I'd definitely recommend this for the witty banter between the H and h(Shakespeare, and finding all the possible words for the H's penis in Shakespeare's works), unforgettable scenes and an all round good story. ONE THING that skived me out a bit is that the H and h are cousins-distant cousins but still.

Honestly our hero is a big jerk. Even after falling for our heroine, he was still selfish and wanted to ruin her family's reputation including all her sisters. The ending was certainly better and cute and it seemed like he's better but maybe too little too late. Our heroine was a breath of fresh air at first UNTIL SHE KEPT CRYING AT EVERY LITTLE SINGLE THING. Yet, she's still so resilient and strong. So I enjoyed her despite her waterworks. I liked the book but there were Soo many stubborn characters and some scenes didn't age well.

Rosalie has a tendency to cry and Griff's jealousy is so irrational he becomes jealous of himself at one point, but together they make the best Shakespeare-quoting OTP dropped in a swapped identity plot I have had the pleasure to read yet. Everything works like clockwork in A Dangerous Love by Sabrina Jeffries. Rosalie and Griff practically buzz with electricity from the second they lay eyes on each other, as Rosalie nips at Griff’s heels to find out what he’s up to at Swanlea and Griff is not going to let anyone stop him on his quest to reclaim his rightful title... A near-perfect firebrand couple. Icy Helena and earthy Daniel make a fine Couple B pairing that are threatened by what the other represents and inexplicaly drawn to each other (Helena the epitome of ladylike refinement untouchable for Daniel, and Daniel a very masculine type that would just as well not look twice at a crippled beauty). Their desire but fear of rejection adds taut friction to their interactions, often influenced by their misconceptions about the other. Fortunately there's Juliet, whose naiveté isn't simply an extension of her innocence but an engine for comic relief that ages well with each reread. The breakout comedian from making a “point of having plums at every meal” to changing her tone from a scared rabbit to a maternal hen towards Daniel upon the revelation about who's actually who. My personal all-time favourite by Sabrina Jeffries. *chef’s kiss*

A Dangerous Love is the first book in the Swanlea Spinsters series and was actually my first read from Sabrina Jeffries. I definitely had higher hopes for this series and author and it didn’t really deliver sadly. I have heard better things for the next couple books in the series so I do plan to continue on.

This is a historical romance with secret identity. Griff finds out he has a distant cousin, the Earl of Swanlea, who is dying and has his estate Swan Park entailed to Griff. Griff has always been known as a bastard, along with his close friend Daniel, and is surprised to find out there might be proof that he actually isn’t. The Earl of Swanlea is a widower whose 3 daughters are known as the “Swanlea Spinsters”, he’s determined to marry off his 3 daughters before he passes and sees the opportunity with Griff to marry off one of them. Griff wants to establish his legitimacy (so he can gain a position on the trade delegation to China he desperately wants), and supposedly the Earl has proof of it, so Griff plans to travel to Swan Park with Daniel in tow to find the proof he needs for his legitimacy while pretending to be Daniel (his man of affairs). While Daniel pretends to be Griff and keep the spinster sisters busy!

Lady Rosalind is the middle daughter and has no interest in her father’s plans for Griff. She just wants to move to London to become an actress like her late mother was, and to take care of her sisters. We have Griff’s secret identity for over half the book, he and Rosalind are pulled together immediately so it makes for an interesting situation. I feel like they just have a toxic setup and are back and forth a lot in this book, even when they’re good they have a lot of issues. We do get some action on swings in here. 👀 And this book/series has allllllll sorts of Shakespeare references (including the sister’s names). I just wasn’t convinced these 2 were in love by the end or even meant to be together. I was very unimpressed by this one sadly!

After reading the first few sentences, I was hooked. I always liked the identity-swapping conflict and anticipating how it'll be resolved. This story was quite unpredictable so that's another plus. While the setting was mostly in Swanlea Park, the characters' wit and banter were exciting enough.

I immediately liked Rosalind! I have a thing for independent, sassy, and sharp-tongued heroines. Aside from her striking good looks and her passion to be an actress, she also has a fancy for loud colors. Sabrina Jeffries certainly does know her Shakespeare since Rosalind and Griff were using quotes for their arguments. It's amusing how they first met. There's a lot of resistance, a lot of cunning, planning, and plotting and revenge.

Lust overcame the characters because of their fierce attraction for each other. It was rampant and addictive for the both of them. Griff liked Rosalind's mind and enjoyed being in her company, and I commend her suspicious nature. Both of them are on equal footing when it comes to their intelligence. While revenge is on Griff's mind, Rosalind only cares about her family. I didn't like the fake earl; even though he's suffering for it out of guilt and remorse, he wasn't really able to redeem himself.

There were a lot of funny moments and I appreciated it. Not all historical romance novels have it and I always love a good laugh. It's amazing how Ms Jeffries construct her characters, Helena, the eldest is beautiful but because of her limp, she's unattractive to the eyes of most people, except for Daniel of course. Those two have strong undercurrents.

The love scenes were passionate and because Griff and Rosalind are falling in too deep, they exchanged harsh words and Griff did everything to make her his. I admired Rosalind's decision to move away and pursue her dream, because it made Griff realize how much he needed her, and her love. So, another case of "don't know what you have 'til it's gone". I'm looking forward to reading the next!

2 stars. I read this book a few days ago, so I'll make this quick. I think that Sabrina Jeffries is a talented author who has a really captivating writing style, but this book didn't do much for me. The actions and reactions of both H&h just frankly suck at times, and I didn't end up liking either of them. I also didn't like ANY of the Swanlea Spinsters. I didn't like how they acted. I didn't like how they responded to the major revelations in this book. They don't make for good book heroines, imo.

THEN, the heroine treated the hero like he did something wrong by being swindled out of a title by her father. It was absurd. The author tried hard to convince me that the hero was the bad guy for wanting justice...wtf. Nope, I felt like he was the most in the right from the beginning and became addled with time.

Safe; no others during this book. H wasn't a man whore but was experienced. h was a virgin. They are cousins, but semi-distant from all I can tell. Still a bit ewww.

I started off this series by reading the third book (After the Abduction) and I was intrigued by the comments made by and about Griff and Rosalind in that book. They sounded like an interesting couple. Having finished this book, all I can say is that they are truly one amazingly well matched pair of characters - strong willed, loyal, determined, passionate, and intelligent. Sassy Rosalind matches wits with Griff from their first encounter and they both try to gain the upper hand by quoting Shakespeare to prove their points. Griff's determination to rid himself of Rosalind and her determination to stick to him results in numerous humourous situations and exchanges between the two.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The story grabbed my attention early and held it until the last page. Jeffries has such a smooth writing style that the story just flows effortlessly. As entertaining as the two main characters were, the secondary characters, especially Helena and Daniel, received enough attention to pique my interest - I'll be reading their story next. Hopefully Juliet will also appear in the next book. 'After the Abduction' is Juliet's story, but her introduction in this book helps me appreciate her character a little more. Although these books can be read as standalones, reading them in order gives the characters more depth. After I finish the second book in this series, I may just have to reread Juliet's story. I rated it three stars - an average read. However, given how much I like this author, rereading one of her books won't be too much of a hardship.

Why only 3 stars? I loved the witty banter, plot line, the typical SJ formula which I love, the secondary characters (can't wait for Helena and Daniel's story!!). What didn't I love? The two main characters. Although I liked Griff a bit more, I didn't feel a connection to either one of them. In fact at times I grew tired of Rosalind, and highly annoyed. I don't think she did anything wrong, but obviously there was just something I can put my finger on to cause me not to really like them. I think with Rosalind I don't like how aimless her life seemed to be. She wanted to be away from running the estate, to be an actress, but that really didn't last, and then she didn't want to run the estate either. For someone who proclaimed love was important and the hero kept mentioning that his Rosalind never did anything by half-measures, it sorta felt like she did. I just wanted her to make up her mind about anything already. Griff was okay, but I didn't feel the love. And while I get the several Shakespeare quotes, I found it odd for two people to talk in quotes so often. Onward to Daniel the highwayman's son and Lady Helena! This promises to be interesting!

Despite my utter annoyance with Rosalind, the female lead, who I find completely slappable and truly frustrating, I still liked the story overall. Even though I found the secondary leads far more interesting and found myself reading the book for hints of their story (and of course, the setup for the next in this series), the main pair's storyline and conflict and resolution was interesting enough, I suppose.

Since I mostly skip the smexy parts of romance novels (after you've read hundreds of novels, the sex scenes get rather perfunctory and boring), I read these types of books for the story and the plot. Crazy, I know. Sometimes, even for the writing! But I'll tell you what I don't like - sudden insertions of extra POVs for no reason other than to give us new information. That is truly distracting in a genre that usually only has two POVs. I dislike this very much!

This one gets a 3.5 because I really like the author and her writing is very captivating however this time I had a hard time liking the main characters both. The woman was too stubborn and suspicious and the man was selfish and inconsiderate. It ended well but I wasn't thrilled with them for the most part of the story.

In a Dangerous Love we have Griff who has always been thought of as illegitimate and had hard life but has made something of himself in trade. He knows he is the rightful Lord of Swanlea but he can’t prove it because his parents marriage certificate conveniently disappeared not long after they were married. He has been contacted by his uncle with an ultimatum that he will give him the certificate if he agrees to marry one of his daughters. He wants to make sure that they are secure before turning over the fact he isn’t really the rightful Earl of Swanlea.

Griff decides that in order to be able to look for the certificate on his own and try and find it so he can out his uncle he will have his assistant and friend Daniel pretend to be him and he will take on the role of Daniel. Daniel is not really fond of this but does it anyway.

Rosalind can’t believe what her father is doing and is prepared to do anything she can to make sure none of them have to marry a man they do not want too. She catches Griff snooping around in her fathers office and is suspicious of him and so she keeps making sure she is around to keep an eye of him or having someone like a footman around. This deeply frustrates Griff and he thinks that if he tries to be forward with her that she will be scared off but she isn’t and instead of scaring her off he starts to like her. Problem is he is pretending to be someone else!

I really liked Rosalind as she is spunky, dedicated to her family and a lot of fun. Griff is handsome and brooding but I am not a fan of the trope where people trade places and lie about themselves so that makes him not so likeable. Because I am not a huge fan of this trope it lessened my enjoyment of this but overall it’s not a bad read. I am a huge fan of Sabrina Jeffries though so will probably continue this series as you never enjoy all of your favorite authors books. 🙂

I enjoyed the narrator for this one, not listened to Rachael Beresford narration before but she did a pretty decent job.

I do enjoy a good loath to love historical romance, and A Dangerous Love provided just that. Griff and Rosalind are both such terribly cantankerous individuals and know exactly how to push each other's buttons. I found their banter back and forth to be comical and enjoyed the ways in which they set out to purposely irritate each other. I found it hilarious that Rosaind's family knows exactly how outrageous she is and the lengths they go to ensure that Griff is delayed in meeting her to keep him from running straight back to London.

A tricky thing about that hidden/secret identity is that it can be so difficult for the offender to redeem themselves once the deception is discovered. However, Griff pulls out all the stops and does the damn thing to make things up to Rosalind and prove he is someone worthy of her love, trust, and devotion.

As for steam, Jefferies uses a mixture of explict and non-explict terms in her steam writing. Scenes are well rounds and feel complete in length.

I enjoyed this story a lot. It had a pastoral background and plot that didn’t exactly keep me on the edge of my seat but flowed so nicely that I found myself enjoying the book nonetheless and just sitting back and smiling. It was well written, the main and side characters full bodied, original and likable. Griff could have been a bit more fleshed out but that was made up by Rosalind who was a very unique heroine (with aspirations to the stage, was popular and vivacious, and also very full bodied which affected her self worth to some extent but it wasn’t an overwhelming aspect to the plot - she clearly had plenty of self worth but didn’t think men were attracted to her, she also realized that attracting men wasn’t all there was to life... very refreshing). I did think that her inner thoughts were very poignant and relatable and found myself tearing up a couple times. And I LOVED how Griff always stood up for her... even when he started off as an ass at first.
The revenge plot was not fully fleshed out either really but I think that’s because it wasn’t that well conceived by Griff... more like a side effect than a true purpose. It became more of an issue than originally intended. Griff’s eventual “grovel” was very nice and I love that Rosiland also came to her senses. I’m excited for the rest of the series!

A Dangerous Love
3 Stars

While slow to start, the story picks up speed 1/3 of the way in and is entertaining overall despite the secret keeping and runaway heroine tropes that often rub me the wrong way.

Griff and Rosalind are likable enough and their sex scenes are well-written and steamy. Nevertheless, it is actually Helena and Daniel's opposites attract chemistry that is most intriguing. Looking forward to reading their story.

2.9. 🌹🥇🐦‍🔥

“No one is born to courage, Juliet. Courage is a habit you develop after cowardice has gotten you nothing.”

I liked the overall mood and atmosphere. The couple's dynamic was pretty interesting. It was dated but in kind of a charming way.

Bintang 4 untuk buku 1 Swanlea Spinsters.

Marsden Griffith Knighton, Griff, seorang pria sukses pemilik Knighton Trading.

Tapi rencana, tinggallah rencana. Pertemuan Griff dgn Rosalind, putri ke2 earl menghancurkan pandangan Rosalind thd Griff.
