American Caesar 2American Caesar 2 is a quest for MacArthur, a man who has gained an extreme reputation of praise and adoration, contempt and disgust at the stages of history and politics. On the other hand, it was full of vanity, and it was an incarnation of self-centeredness that did not tolerate even criticism with caution in the declining later years. A noble, mean, arrogant, shy, ridiculous, sublime, paradoxical character that has thus far been divided. The author, William Manchester, succinctly depicts birth, growth, love, family, as well as friendship and hostility around him, in concise style and balance. At the age of fifty four, the beloved government, who has four stars on his shoulders, appears in his mothers eyes. Even as the ruler of a ruler, American Caesar-MacArthur Peace is an interesting book that tells the story of MacArthurs flesh.
William Raymond Manchester was an American author and biographer, notable as the bestselling author of 18 books that have been translated into 20 languages. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award.
Manchester is a superb biographer. I have read, and now listened to, this biography and learned each time. MacArthur's contemporaries described him as someone you could only love or hate, yet Manchester has managed to present a sympathetic biography that is still appropriately critical. All the more remarkable since Manchester himself served in the Pacific Theatre. Highly recommend this biography in any version.
