An ambitious young Norman knight, Neel, is seriously wounded at the Battle of Hastings and nursed back to health by a Saxon girl, Rowena. For her, it is only a matter of Christian duty and she is shocked to receive his proposal of marriage in return. She dares not refuse, but how can she love a Norman?
Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I remember. I was published in poetry long before I caught the romance writing bug.
I always meant to write a book; I really did. But I was born in a horse-centered, fox-hunting part of Pennsylvania and put on a horse so young it’s a wonder I ever learned to walk. My early years were completely taken up with horses. When one of them knocked me unconscious for a rather long time, I began to have different thoughts.
Thus began an 18-year career in various aspects of psychiatric social services. And did I mention I married a man with five children? I wrote poetry because it didn’t take as long as writing 100,000 words. All of it was published and that helped silence the little voice going, “But I really want to write a book!” When I was widowed at age 41, I dealt with it by running away to Ireland, where the little voice kept getting louder.
The result was an outburst of writing. This comes after massive amounts of help from Romance Writers of America, Valley Forge Romance Writers, Celtic Hearts and Rome-antics.
Let’s hear it for all those great ladies!
Presently, I live on a small farm in Elverson, Pennsylvania with an assortment of rescue animals …mostly horses.
Miriam Newman’s The Comet does not disappoint! Historical romance readers will fall in love with the story, characters, and dialogue. I love Rowena’s character and how she struggles to keep her customs and traditions alive, but Neel interferes with that. She also wants to be true to herself and her faith, but love happens to interfere? What is a girl to do with such a handsome Norman knight I also love Neel’s character because he has his cheeky moments and well you can never have enough of those (go read that excerpt!). So if your looking to go back in time where love still conquered, look no further ladies because this is one surely not to miss. Newman always creates a world of her own and helps the reader embrace it while making fun and lovable characters.
The Comet by Miriam Newman is a wonderful historical romance that takes the reader into 11th century England. What I enjoyed most is that it is realistic and well written with greater emphasis on a good story line rather than simply romance. It is this, which gives the novel a greater appeal. I very much enjoyed the plot and dialogue. The characters were complex and evolved beautifully. Each page was believable and plausible, rich in historic detail. It accurately portrayed the discord between the Normans, Welsh, and English.
The interplay between the heroine and hero definitely evokes much emotion -sometimes humorous, sometimes passionate. Each of them face hard choices and suffer loss as they come to realize their love for each other. Highly entertaining, this is a quality romance which will not disappoint.
Everyone already wrote about the twists and turns of the plot; its historical setting and flavor and I agree with all of it. Comet really does take the reader into another time and truly fall-in-love and have great adventures, overcome deeply entrenched values or come to peace with them; and have fun all the way. I love this book.
I'll never forget Rowena and her struggles with her faith and values and Neel--well, he sizzles sexy and has all the characteristics of a alpha, hero-with a sense of humor.
I love this story!
Seriously, don't let this story pass you by if you like historical and a book with romance and a great plot. I'm afraid to say the premise as I don't want to give anything away!
The name of the book is: Comet (I got it on Kindle) Author: Miriam Newman
'The Comet' is an exciting historical romance, full of adventure, knights, battles and a hero and heroine who come to love and understand each other. Covering the invasion of England by the Normans in 1066, the story also stretches at times into Wales. It is also a very human story, of love, betrayal, misunderstandings and dark pasts that need to be resolved before Neel and Rowena achieve their deserved HEA. The different cultures of Saxon England, the Welsh borders and Norman France are brought to life and the secondary characters within the novel are a delight. Thanks to Miriam Newman's writing, I felt I understood all of them and certainly I felt for them all.
