So there is no one to whom I can speak the words that most need to be spoken, about the events which most closely concern our family and what has happened to us; I have to keep them bottled up inside me and there are times when they threaten to choke me.

Valentino is the spoiled child of doting parents who have no doubt he will be 'a man of consequence'. His sisters, however, see him for what he truly lazy, apathetic, self-absorbed and far more interested in partying than applying himself to his studies at medical school. His parents' dreams begin to unravel when, out of the blue, Valentino becomes engaged to the wealthy yet strikingly ugly Maddalena. The family is scandalised by his choice of bride – and suspicious of his motives.

About the author

Natalia Ginzburg (née Levi) was an Italian author whose work explored family relationships, politics during and after the Fascist years and World War II, and philosophy. She wrote novels, short stories and essays, for which she received the Strega Prize and Bagutta Prize. Most of her works were also translated into English and published in the United Kingdom and United States. An activist, for a time in the 1930s she belonged to the Italian Communist Party. In 1983 she was elected to Parliament from Rome as an Independent.

امسال خیلی از ادبیات ایتالیا خوندم و گینزبورگ هم از نویسندگان زنی هست که داستان‌هاش برام جذابه...

وقتی کتاب رو انتخاب کردم هیچ آشنایی با نویسنده نداشتم و تنها یک کنجکاوی ساده باعث خوندن این کتاب نه چندان حجیم شد. باید اقرار کنم که بعد از خوندن "اتاقی از آن خود" نوشته ی ویرجینیا وولف دیدم نسبت به زنان نویسنده متفاوت شده و با خوندن آثارشون شاید دنبال چیزهایی متفاوت از آثار مردان نویسنده هستم. شاید این که این اثر چه قدر جامعه و می تونه از هر جنسیتی مخاطب جذب کنه

چیزی که تو نثر گینزبورگ خیلی به چشم میاد پرهیز از توصیف شخصیت ها و صحنه هاست. عاملی که داستان رو جلو می بره حوادث و اتفاقات هستن. همین خودش به نظرم یه نوع سرعت به خواننده می بخشه و داستان رو خوشخوان و روان میکنه

میشه گفت ناتالیا گینزبورگ آثار زنانه می نویسه: اکثرا زنان هستند که روایتگرند و از مشکلاتی حرف می زنند که شاید دلمشغولی های هر زنی باشه ولی اون قدر عادی و تکراری و روزمره شده که از قالب غصه خارج شده و شکل یک روال عادی از زندگی به خودش گرفته. درآمد معمولی، قیافه ی معمولی تر، ترس از تنها موندن تا آخر عمر و سربار دیگران شدن، ازدواج و گاها حتی مجبور شدن به تن دادن به ازدواج چون چاره دیگه ای نیست و همه ی سختی های زندگی مشترک و درک نکردن های متقابل بخشی از مواردیه که نویسنده تو سه داستان این کتاب بهشون پرداخته

به عنوان خواننده ای همجنس نویسنده، واقعن دیدش رو دوست داشتم. این که سعی نمیکنه اثرش رو پیچیده به نظر بیاره، حرفای بزرگ بزنه. من چیزی از تظاهر ندیدم. سراسر سادگی و صمیمیت بود. شاید همین خصلت های گینزبورگ بود که باعث شد فکر کنم اثری ساده میخونم و سه ستاره تمام و کمال تقدیمش کنم هر چند حرف های شیرینی داشت

Valentino leads the reader along, thinking you are reading a straight forward story, until you arrive at the point of realising that your reactions are judgements and the book holds up a mirror to our own conditioning. And that is how it feels reading it in 2024. I can’t even imagine the storm it likely raised when published in 1957.

Little Sense or Sensibility
Valentino is a short novella narrated by Caterina, who is training to become a teacher. She lives with her father, a retired schoolteacher, her mother, who used to give piano lessons and her brother, Valentino who does very little, but whose medicine studies and equipment cost a lot.

we had to help my sister who was married to a commercial traveller and had three children and a pitifully inadequate income, and we also had to support my student brother who my father believed was destined to become a man of consequence. There was little enough reason to believe this, but he believed it all the same and had done ever since Valentino was a small boy and perhaps found it difficult to break the habit.

Valentino spends his time playing with a kitten, making toys out of scraps of material, dressing up and admiring himself. A string of engagements to teenagers raise false hopes and always end the same way – broken. So when he announces he will be married within the month, naturally the family expect the pattern to continue.

What a Wife Can Be or Not to Be

So when he turned up with his new fiancée we were amazed to the point of speechlessness. She was quite unlike anything we had ever imagined.

We learn of all the family members reactions to this new fiancée, with the exception of the father.

he was about to launch into a long speech about what was the main consideration but my mother interrupted him. My mother always interrupted his speeches, leaving him choking on a half-finished sentence, puffing with frustration.

A Man of Consequence, The Weight of Expectation
Valentino is oblivious to the reactions and judgements of his family and continues to act and communicate as he always has, holding nothing back, expecting everyone to be happy for him.

Is he fearless? A truth teller who doesn’t hide things or worry about what others think of him? Is he a narcissist? He is a wonderful character because he is like the mystery at the centre of the story. Who don’t quite know who he is because he isn’t acting as everyone including the reader might expect him to.

His father lost for words, does not understand that what he is witnessing is the incarnation of his desire, his son is indeed becoming a man of consequence, just not in the way he had expected.

Valentino is captivated by his wife, by her look, her intelligence, her culture. She showers him in gifts, he has upended social convention, insulted the patriarchy and all who prop it up.

My father said he would go to have a talk with Valentino’s fiancée, but my mother was opposed to this, partly because my father had a weak heart and was supposed to avoid any excitement, partly because she thought his arguments would be completely ineffectual. My father never said anything sensible; perhaps what he meant to say was sensible enough, but he never managed to express what he meant, getting bogged down in empty words, digressions and childhood memories, stumbling and gesticulating. So at home he was never allowed to finish what he was saying because we were all too impatient, and he would hark back wistfully to his teaching days when he could talk as much as he wanted and nobody humiliated him.

Out of Place
Once they are married, it is his family that feels out of place, ill at ease. Valentino is easily able to be among his wife’s friends and family as well as his own. He does not feel undeserving or unworthy of their company or his newfound social status. Neither is he aware of the dilemmas facing his family.

It is best not to share too much of the storyline, but to discover it yourself, because every page is a wonderful discovery, of thought provoking insights into the human condition and the reaction of those around us when one defies convention and how they too can be displaced when set down inside an unfamiliar environment.

When Caterina finishes her diploma and gets a job, we observe how Maddalena’s offer to house and feed her, though on the surface seems attractive, acts to disempower her, denying her independence and supporting a selfish desire. Through the unconventional marriage, we see the ridiculousness of gender conditioning all the more clearly.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant, the way Ginzburg has created these two characters, upending societal norms and inverting typical behaviours.

Highly recommended.

This is the third Ginzburg I've read now as every time I finish one I order another. They're just brilliantly endearing, simple tales of ordinary provincial life in Italy. Very addictive reading.

In Valentino, the title character is a lazy student of medicine, the golden child of three siblings and destined for a 'man of consequence' according to his father, despite being devoid of any ambition himself.

After a string of fiancées, he one day arrives with his final choice. Named Maddalena, she is different than the others, but perhaps for the wrong reasons - described as ugly with a shiny nose and moustache. She may be ugly, but she is ugly and rich.

They marry, and life goes on. But as is common with a Ginzburg story, it's never as you'd expect.

Told by Caterina, one of the siblings; Valentino is a heartbreaking tale of familial dysfunctionality, grief, suicide, sexuality, marriage and place.

me gusta la intensidad del relato, más propia de un cuento que de una nouvelle. también me gusta eso que hace ginzburg de no enseñar absolutamente todo de los personajes, aquello que trasluce pero no llega a mostrar del todo y que los hace más complejos.

«Lo sigo con la mirada cuando baja a la calle y lo acompaño hasta la esquina, y me alegro de que siga siendo tan guapo, con su pequeña frente cubierta de rizos y su espalda fuerte. Me alegro de su caminar, todavía tan alegre, tan libre y triunfante: me alegra su caminar, vaya donde vaya».

La perfección de las novelas cortas, tan sencilla y tan profunda. Hay algo en los nombres italianos que me fascina y que me hace querer vivir en un pueblecito durante los años 40.

اولین دیدار با ناتالیا گینزبورگ هم چالش های خودش را داشت. قلمش برخلاف تصورم خیلی پیچیده نبود و داستان ها ظاهری ساده داشتند که میشد ردپای لایه های عمیق تر را درآنها تشخیص داد.از سه داستان کتاب،داستان قوس آخرین و گیراترین داستان کتاب بود برایم که موقع خواندنش هراسی ناخودآگاه از آن همه وضوح در جانم می نشست. و البته این نکته هم برایم خیلی جالب بود که جامعه مذهبی ایتالیایی چقدر از نظر رفتارها و محدودیتهای فکری شبیه جامعه مذهبی ایرانی است. و اگر اسامی مذهبی را با هم جایگزین می کردی رفتارهای دو جامعه از هم قابل تمییز نبود!

M'ha encantat! És molt breu, però deixa petjada! Ve amb un epíleg de Jenn Díaz que m'ha agradat per l'anàlisi uqe en fa en relació a l'autora i les altres obres. Díaz diu: "Ginzburg parla d'allò del qual en realitat no parla. La guerra, l'orfandat, el desarrelament, l'homosexualitat". I és veritat, perquè quan acabes el llibre t'adones de tot el que has pogut llegir sense que Ginzburg te n'hagi dit res. "I tot i així, podríem dir que és una història profunda, plena de detalls i de gris" (Díaz).


"Vaig pujar a poc a poc a la meva habitació. Duia la llana que havia de cabdellar, i tot d'una em semblava molt cansat, cabdellar la llana, i també aixecar els peus per pujar l'escala, i haver-me de despullar, i plegar la roba sobre la cadira i posar-me al llit. Volia cridar la minyona i dir-li que tenia mal de cap i que no baixaria a sopar: però no volia veure la minyona, no volia veure la seva cabellera roja i recordar aquell dia."

הספר הזה מאגד ארבע נובלות של נטליה גינצבורג. הספר פורסם ב-2001. בינתיים הוציאה "הספרייה החדשה" את אחת הנובלות בתור ספרון העומד בפני עצמו ומאוחר יותר (כנראה במסגרת שאיפתם לארגון מחדש של "כל כתבי" סופרים נבחרים תחת הוצאתם) פוצלו הנובלות בין ספרים חדשים, הכוללים כל אחד מהם עריכה מחודשת ועוד סיפורים קצרים נלווים. אני מצאתי את הספר הזה מושלך ברחוב אבל במצב מצוין (למעט צהבהבות קלה, אבל זו בעיה מוכרת גם בספרים שלהם השמורים בביתי – חבל שאינם משקיעים גם באיכות הנייר). יש כמה טעיות עריכה בספר אבל בסך הכל התרגום מצוין. מביקורות שקראתי הסיפורים שהוסיפו אינם באיכות של הנובלות. לכן גם הקובץ הזה כנראה אינו חסר ואפילו מצטיין במיצוי של כתיבה נבחרת ומעולה.

אלו אינן יצירות רעיוניות אלא בעיקר חגיגה של מספרת סיפורים מוכשרת, של ציירת פויינטליסטית המשתמשת בעשרות מיקרו אירועים ודמויות משנה רבות מבלי לאבד לרגע את הקוהרנטיות של התמונה כולה. המשפטים קצרים, הכל ריאליסטי אבל משתולל. לאחר כל תיאור מגיע תיאור או הערה שכאילו גורמים לקטע שהקורא הובל בו לסוב על עקביו, מה שמייצר דמויות בעלות נפש ייחודית, עקשנית ומרדנית ואווירה של סרקזם מרחף. למרות העושר המסחרר של דמויות ואירועים, הקריאה (וקורא איטי כמוני לא יכול להימנע מלשים לכך לב) שוטפת בקצב מסחרר. לעיתים מתקבלת תחושה שגינצבורג היא סופרת של טריק אחד, של צורת כתיבה עליה היא חוזרת שוב ושוב. אבל היא עושה זאת בכישרון כה רב כך שאינך מואס בסיפור אף לא לרגע.

המשותף לכל הנובלות הוא שהן עוסקות במשפחה. ברובן משפחה שאינה "נורמלית" אבל נורמלית ברב-גוניות שמוצאים בה. המשפחות אינן בדיוק משפחות מתפקדות. הן יותר אוסף דמיות החגות אחת סביב רעותה, לא מתקשרות ולעיתים מתנגשות בחוסר הבנה. הנובלה הראשונה, "ולנטינו", היא סיפור נוגה, הכתוב נהדר והוא עוד יחסית סטנדרטי. הנובלה השנייה "מזל קשת" היא הארוכה ביותר. גם כאן עלילה פשוטה לכאורה, אבל כאן בולט כבר העושר בפרטים ממנו מתגבשת דמותה של אם המשפחה הנלעגת והמרשימה, העצובה והמגוכחת כאחד. הנובלה השלישית "משפחה" היא האקספרימנטלית ביותר. השפע המסחרר של דמויות ואירועים מגיע כאן לשיא עד כי נדמה (בצדק) שיש כאן רק רעיון צורני – שפע הפרטים והתפניות מכוון להעביר את הרעיון כי מושג המשפחה כאן הוא דינמי ומתעתע ביותר וחסר גרעין. לכן זהו גם הסיפור המייגע ביותר. נדמה כי גינצבורג יכלה לקצרו כדי חצי או להאריכו פי שניים, באותה מידה. למרות שבשלב מסוים מתחשק לך להגיד לנטליה "בסדר הבנתי," בכל זאת בסיום הקריאה אתה נהנה מתחושת הסחרחורת כמו ילד שירד מקרוסלה. הנובלה האחרונה מספרת על שנותיה האחרונות של אלמנה מזדקנת – ושוב אותו מחול נוגע-לא-נוגע של דמויות מרובות, ושפע אירועים שגינבורג מתזמנת בשליטה של להטוטן.

ספר המרכז ארבע נובלות פרי עטה של המחברת. הנובלות נכתבו בין השנים 1951 – 1977 ומרכזן בחיי המשפחה ובמערכות היחסים של בני המשפחה מזוויות שונות.

הספר נקרא על שם הנובלה הראשונה שבו.

"ולנטינו" – ולנטינו הוא ילד החלומות של המשפחה. האב תמיד תלה בו תקוות גדולות ולכן המשפחה כולה נרתמה והשקיעה בו את מלוא המשאבים הכספיים על מנת שיהיה רופא. האב חשב שההשקעה תחזיר את עצמה.

הנובלה מסופרת מפי אחותו של ולנטינו קתרינה, המתארת את הנפילה של אחרי הצפיה. אבל זה יותר מכך, בתיאור חיי היומיום היא מצליחה לזעזע את הקורא עד עמקי נשמתו עם גילויים מרעישים הנוחתים כך בלי הכנה.

"מזל קשת" – הנובלה הארוכה ביותר בספר. מתארת מפי הבת הקטנה את סיפור קורותיה של משפחה, בה האם דומיננטית חולמת על חיים אחרים בעיר הגדולה.

תיאור חיי המשפחה ע"י הבת הקטנה נעשים ממרחק שמוביל לתובנות עמוקות על מערכת היחסים בין הדמויות השונות. המרחק גם מאפשר להבחין בדיסוננס של האם תוך קילוף השכבות העוטפות את המציאות בה היא חייה. גינצבורג באומנות מובילה את הקורא לשיא, ומבלי שהוא יבחין הצלחת מתהפכת והעולם חרב.

כמו בנובלה הראשונה, הוירטואוזיות של גינצבורג נובעת מהיכולת שלה לתאר את הבנאלי ובו בזמן לזעזע את הקורא עד עמקי נשמתו בצירוף אירועים , שעל פניו נראים חסרי חשיבות.

"משפחה" – נובלה המתארת את מאבקם של נינטה וקרמינה לשמר את התא המשפחתי שלהם על רקע אירועים מעברו של קרמינה ומההווה של בני הזוג.

הנובלה פורסת מערכת יחסים מורכבת עם דמויות מהעבר (איוונה) ועם בני משפחתם של בני הזוג. לטעמי הנובלה פחות מוצלחת מהשתיים הקודמות, גם בגלל שגינצבורג מתפרסת ונכנסת לחייהן של הדמויות הסובבות את הדמויות הראשיות בסיפור.

היא לא מסתפקת בתיאור מערכת היחסים בין בני הזוג, ובין הדמויות החולפות בחייהן העכשוויים אלא גם נכנסת לתיאור של מערכות היחסים המלוות את אותן דמויות, דבר שיוצר למעשה תחושת עומס ומיותרות בלתי מוצדקת בנובלה כל כך קצרה.

"בורגנות" –נובלה הפורסת את חייהם של בני משפחה אחת החיים כולם בקומפלקס דירות השייך לפייטרו, המהווה דמות אב המרכזת סביבה את המשפחה.

במהלך הנובלה לאט לאט הולכת ומתפוררת אשליית האחדות , תוך שהדמויות פונות לדרכן בחיים ומתנתקות ממרכז הכובד המשפחתי.

בכל הנובלות בספר הזה יש משהו מאוד עצוב, מאוד נוגע ללב. לעיתים הקורא מרגיש תוגה לנוכח המשגים בהחלטות של הדמויות המרכזיות, משגים שהיה ניתן למנוע במהלך האירועים לו רק היו מקדישים את תשומת הלב הראויה.

מומלץ בחום, אבל מצריך סבלנות והרבה סימפטיה.

روایت انسانهایی که در جای اشتباهی هستند و یا لااقل خود میپندارند که در جای غلطی هستند .تلاش نافرجام آنها برای رسیدن به زندگس رویایی خود گاهی همدلی و گاهی سرزنش به همراه دارد اما در نهایت کارکترها برای ما بسیار آشناست نه تنها در کنارمان زندگی میکنند بلکه بخشی از وجودمان هستند. گینزبورگ با روایتی یک دست و دقیق ما را همراه خود میکند هر چند داستان آخر به اطاله ی کلام مبتلاست .

Desde niños, a Valentino se le mira como a alguien destinado a lo grande. No ha hecho nada aún, pero ya se espera todo de él. Sus hermanas, en cambio, aprenden a estar en segundo plano. A observar, apoyar, no pedir demasiado.
Valentino es una novela corta sobre una familia que reparte expectativas de forma desigual. A él se le destina el orgullo, el dinero, la fe. A ellas, la resignación silenciosa. Y lo más inquietante es que nadie lo cuestiona: todo parece natural, casi inevitable.
Pero lo que Ginzburg muestra, sin levantar la voz, es cómo esas expectativas pueden convertirse en cadenas para todos. Para Valentino, que carga con un destino que no ha elegido. Para sus hermanas, que viven a la sombra de un proyecto que no es suyo. Nadie escapa intacto.
La narradora —una de esas hermanas— no se coloca en el centro, pero todo pasa por su mirada. Una voz lúcida, contenida, irónica sin ser cruel. Una narradora que no se queja, pero tampoco se engaña. A través de ella, Ginzburg denuncia sin gritar: el género determina el valor que se te asigna, incluso antes de que seas alguien.
No hay héroes, ni víctimas claras. Solo una estructura familiar que revela, sin aspavientos, cómo las jerarquías dentro de casa pueden ser más opresivas que cualquier otra cosa.
Valentino se lee en una tarde y deja preguntas para mucho más. ¿Qué destino se nos asigna al nacer? ¿Cuánto cuesta no decepcionar? ¿Cuánto cuesta no existir?

i literally finished this in like 2 hours, it was so good. this was my first book by ginzberg and it DEFINITELY won’t be my last. super excited to explore her other works.

the imagery was so beautiful. it reminded me a lot of leo tolstoy and elisa shua dusapin’s writing styles. the main character also reminded me of jane eyre—like her moral principles and selflessness.

chef’s kiss. this book is definitely on my top 20 list for sure!!!

Opinió:
“Valentino” és una novel·la breu, però que amaga una gran història entre les seves pàgines. És un llibre perfecte per llegir d'una tirada, per llegir un diumenge com avui o durant un viatge curt. Amb una prosa senzilla i molt cuidada, Ginzburg ens endinsa dins la vida d'aquests personatges, i, per increïble que soni, no se centra en una etapa, sinó al llarg de gairebé tota una vida. A més, una vegada acabat, me va encantar la manera de narrar que té l'autora, de dir tot el que diu sense dir-ho, és una meravella.

Vull destacar l'epíleg tan bo que en fa Jenn Díaz, té molta raó en el que diu: “Natalia Ginzburg és breu, molt breu. No li cal gran cosa per poder dibuixar la psicologia de tots els personatges, per trobar-ne els detalls més mínims i per establir entre ells, els protagonistes, i nosaltres, els lectors, un vincle ferm. Ho fa amb elegància i amb molta, molta subtilesa.”

“Valentio” ha estat la porta d'entrada a aquesta gran autora. Ja tenc un altre llibre seu esperant a les estanteries. I voltros, l'heu llegit? Quin llibre me recomanau per seguir descobrint-la?

Again, I see what Ferrante, Starnone, Di Pietrantonio etc are trying to do, but you can’t imitate perfection.

This was my first Natalia Ginzburg and I fell in love like I did with Alba De Céspedes.

It’s another quiet, mundane, incredibly Italian story and it’s written wonderfully. It even made me laugh in a couple of moments, it made me feel a lot and it was so vivid!

Life in Italy is super boring so all these books talk about really boring, mundane stuff — yet I found this really creative, innovative, and I connected so much to it emotionally.

This ran deeper than the surface of the story but damn, Ginzburg is such a storyteller.
This was such an entertaining read but also when reflected - will leave you going through the notions that seemed subtle but was thrown from the very start of the story.

"Valentino seemed devoid of any ambition to become a man of consequence; in the house, he usually spent his time playing with a kitten or making toys for the caretaker's children out of scraps of old material stuffed with sawdust, fashioning cats and dogs and monsters too, with big heads and long, lumpy bodies.

For such a short and straightforward read, Valentino has many things to unpack. Not only on the society's disparations and expectations to women but also to men and how they forgive them easily for certain things that has led them to be blinded from what was deeper; inside of a person.

Its funny, how when the story ended, I went through the pages again and gasped. Ginzburg is such an amazing storyteller. The story seemed simple, following the POV of Valentino's sister, and her views of him, his marriage, his life and hers that had intertwined as well with her sister-in-law that was not accepted by their parents. Valentino, spoilt and vain marrying to a wealthy but seemingly 'ugly' woman had led the society to view their relationship as such.

Ginzburg's writing will always leave you gobsmacked at the end. When you see tell-tale signs of what's about to happen and can't pinpoint exactly when it will happen, but when it finally blew up? Its really like reading a telenovela of sorts - but in a form that criticizes the society in such a subtle way that you'll have to dig deeper to look at the roots of the problem.

In some ways, Ginzburg has portrayed a concept of almost fluid, in the gender roles that has been implied in this book, of Valentino and his wife and how the roles were reversed - in due to what will happen at the end. Its also at the end of the relationship of Valentino that had led him to act as he pleases and in some ways, showed the conformities on the views for people that is homosexual at the time. The malfunction of the family roles at the time, the class system as well as how Ginzburg had brilliantly and quietly panned out the story was one that I was definitely in awe off.

In short, Valentino is an intriguing story, one that you might not expect what will happen but for some, can be foreseen. Can't wait to read more of Ginzburg's works!

Valentino is a short, quick read that I really enjoyed. Ginzburg’s writing is clear and straightforward, which makes the story easy to move through. While the plot and characters don’t go very deep, it felt like a charming read overall. I will definitely be reading more of her work.
