Bridge: Cards, Wine, and Friends
The driving force behind this book is the need to bring sanity and enjoyment to the game of bridge.
The authors have struggled to learn and use the common bidding conventions only to find ourselves emotionally drained and thoroughly confused at the conclusion of the bidding stage of play.
In an effort to end the pain, we resorted to a bit of wine. While our bidding never improved, we found that we really didn’t care. Also by frequently resorting to “table talk” we were able to attain a clear understanding of our partner’s hand and arrive at an appropriate bid.
However, this was frowned upon by our opponents at the table (our wives), so we set about finding a simpler system of bidding, one that could be understood even after a bit of libation.
And it worked! This simplified “feel good” system of bidding allowed us to understand what our partner was trying to tell us. It boasts two additional
1. It is so simple that we didn’t have to give up the use of wine during play.
2. It is a great training tool for the novice bridge player.
Learning to play bridge is like learning a new language. One does not learn an entirely new, complex vocabulary all at once. Rather, the confident use of just a few basic phrases and words affords the opportunity to learn additional words over time. So it is with bidding.
If you are really intent on learning the game, this book and the “N+1 rule” (see glossary) offer the least painful way to get started. Enjoy!

For the sake of convenience this book is written in the masculine. We are at pains to point out, however, that this is an equal opportunity book and in no way implies a lack of respect for the feminine gender.
To the contrary, anyone who has seen us playing bridge will confirm we are both in awe and trepidation of our wives who added to the quality of this book.
