Typically when people think about sharks they see the first cover image in their heads. Angry, scary, and big teeth. This book was very educational. It showed sharks in a positive way and gave fun facts about them that people may not know. This is a great book for early readers and I would recommend it to my first graders especially the ones who love animals. There are no diverse characters considering the characters are sharks, but overall I enjoyed this book.
Did you know that sharks can here pray 820 feet away (over 2 football fields) away? Or that sharks can smell blood one-half mile away? or that sharks like the color yellow because it is easy to see under water? These and other fascinating facts about sharks can be found in this book. Maintaining their high standards, National Geographic has produced another book that begs to be shared. Whether the reader shares facts like those above or the gorgeous photographs, the book is perfect for all those shark-lovers out there, and even those who don't particularly care for sharks will find the information interesting. The book would also be very useful in teaching students how to read graphs, diagrams, and maps, as well as the importance of good captions. Highly recommended.
The book introduces diverse shark species and depicts their traits and characteristics in details with authentic photos. By judging its book cover, a shark coming out of the water as if it attacks a photographer, I assumed that the book would contain a plethora of negative images. However, the good thing about this book is that the contents shows positive images of sharks as well. For instance, the book points out that sharks were not notorious in the past. In ancient cultures, sharks were honored as protectors as well as guardians. It also encourages readers to be friends with sharks instead of fearing these ocean creatures.
I like to sit at the breakfast table and ask my Mama and Papa to name their top 100 favorite sharks. When my Mama says that she doesn't know that many, I tell her she just needs to name 10 to 15. Then, I grab one of my shark books and help her learn what I know. Mama likes this book because it helped answer her question, "How are sharks different than other sea animals?" There were five characteristics that she thought made identifying them easy.
This book is great for any young person wanting to learn more about sharks.
There are plenty of pictures, fun facts, and side bars that pull in the reader's interest. Comparisons, statistics, and drawings help to further increase the understanding of the reader.
