Despite his best efforts, young Raenef the Fifth can't help but embarrass his tutor, Eclipse, time and time again. Still training to become a Demon Lord, Raenef's friendly and loving nature makes Raenef look bad...and Eclipse look even worse. Fed up with his failures, Raenef does what he once considered unthinkable...and actually tries to study.
However, when one hits the books in a demonic library, the books sometimes hit back. After Raenef suddenly becomes frightening and develops a terrible personality, will Eclipse consider his mission complete or will he start wishing for the "good" old days?

Man, if I thought things were coming to a head before, I had no idea what this volume had in store for me. Ignore that summary on the cover of this volume, that barely covers the first 20% or so of what happens here. The big deal about Demon Diary volume 5 is that we finally start getting answers about Raenef's identity, and everything that happened with the previous demon lord who held that name. There's a lot of lore that gets thrown our way in a short span of time here, but I honestly am thriving, and I think the level of world-building deserves some respect.
That cliffhanger ending though, it feels like it's setting up for the sixth volume to be the climax of the entire series, and I shudder to think what will happen. I'm in this for the long haul though, so I will grit my teeth and bear it. Eventually.
I can't decide if the decision to suddenly include a legitimate plot in the third-to-last volume of the series is a good or bad move. I guess it honestly depends on how it all turns out because I genuinely have no recollection of how this series ends because I think it's been like 14 years since I read it. All the stuff that was introduced in this volume is definitely interesting but I'm not sure if they'll be able to bring it to a satisfying conclusion with only two volumes left. Oh early 2000s manga, what a time to be alive.
This is the turning point volume where Demon Diary becomes weird and in my opinion loses its appeal with an incomprehensible plot.
At the end of the last volume a book turned Raenef evil. I had high hopes for that storyline but it fizzles out early in this volume when Raenef IV (supposedly back from the dead) banishes the book and reverts Raenef back to normal - so nothing happens with his evilness.
We learn how Raenef IV was cursed during the great war with heaven's creatures and died 3,500 years before his time. The curse - annihilation of his name, seems to involve transporting his son Raenef V (our hero) from the future but the time shift has split his personality (making him cute and good) and would have eventually driven him mad and unfit to rule thus ending the Raenef line. Somehow Raenef IV has manipulated time and intends to do something to avert this disaster... fuse his soul into Raenef V?
Really struggle with the plot from hereon, great artwork still, but this really loses its fun element.
Raenef is an orphan and part of a thieving guild that steal to get by. He himself doesn't have much of a talent for theft, nor in anything much else. The renowned demon Eclipse is surprised to find that this naive street boy is destined to become his new master and Demon Lord. Although Raenef does seem to hold the powers of a Demon Lord, he is proving as inept at being one as he is at everything else. Soon, his new domain starts to attract visitors who sense a weak demon has taken up residence.
Firstly, I have always found it baffling and incredibly misleading that people mark this as LGBT/BL. While one could interpret Reanef and Eclipse's relationship as romantic, there is nothing specific enough to suggest things one way or another. Their relationship could just as well be platonic or even fatherly. And while I would be perfectly happy to see these two as a romantic couple, the fact remains that there is not enough to suggest so, especially considering that this is a comedy that is almost completely free of romance.
Demon Diary is from my favourite Korean manga (or manhwa) artist duo. I'm not overly fond of manhwa as the art often doesn't appeal to me, however, Kara's art has always reminded me more of the Japanese manga style. Demon Diary isn't their strongest work in terms of art - don't get me wrong, I like Kara's art, but it isn't quite as pretty and refined yet as in their later works.
However, it is, one of the funniest I have ever read. Do you know that kind of comedy that is so over the top that it's not actually funny anymore? Demon Diary pushes to the next boundary and is just so ridiculous that it's funny again. Raenef is adorable but hopelessly dense and naive. His complete inability to read situations or people has him walking from one witless act to the next, and that's really not the image anyone expects of a great Demon Lord.
Eclipse is a perfectly dignified demon who has a reputation to think of. Rather than a servant, he becomes more of a babysitter and protector of Raenef and is usually the one who feels the embarrassment the most. As Eclipse tries to push Raenef onto the right track of being a good - by that, I mean evil - Demon Lord, various other characters venture through their castle and the one thing they all have in common is their belief that Raenef is completely unsuitable for this role.
Among these characters are Erutis and Kiris - both of who didn't initially stay in the castle voluntarily but ended up being a fixed part of the residents. Erutis is a female swordmaster who doesn't quite know how to act ladylike yet throws a fit if anyone mistakes her for a man. Kiris is a cleric in training and thus a sworn enemy of demons. Somehow, these four end up co-living and even building friendships in which they are willing to take life-threatening risks for each other.
So yes, there is also a slightly darker plotline running in the background, and there are some meaningful relationships between the characters. But when it comes down to it, this is and remains a comedy - and an absolutely hilarious one at that. It was among my first manga (manhwa) and it's one that I have been pleasantly surprised to find that even non-manga-loving friends of mine have had laughing fits when flipping the pages of Demon Diary.
The Fourth Demon Lord Raenef died, due to a curse placed upon him by the creatures of Heaven during the Hangma War. If so, why is he still around? Why is he taking such an interest in the current Demon Lord Raenef, whom he refers to as his son? One might believe the former Lord Raenef was getting sentimental, but Demon Lords Raenef aren’t known for their sentimentality, especially towards the heirs to their names. With a curse coming at noon on a certain special anniversary, things may be coming to a complicated and fatal climax at Raenef Castle.
The plot continues to darken with its revelations and the activities of the Fourth Lord Raenef and the hidden depths displayed in the current Lord Raenef. Chris takes a turn for the more serious as a cleric, even though he continues to be comedic. Erutis is perhaps the most light-hearted character in this volume, continuing to act as a foil for the others. The story and its characters are taking on an intensity with the exposure of the Raenef’s backstories, pushing both forward, and leaving me eager to read what will happen next. For doing all of this an attractive art style which becomes more and more polished, I give this four stars.
As Raenef V learns more about Raenef IV, he increasingly learns bits and pieces of himself, even though he does not understand them. And it really does not help that a demonic book helps release Raenef V's powers and true demonic self before he is ready to fully unleash them. How does Eclipse and company get their Raenef back to the kind and sweet demon lord they've come to know?
Through all the volumes there hasn't been a whole lot of character development for anyone. But what there has been, has all been equal except for Raenef IV who we tend to learn more about than the rest of our characters, even though he is supposedly "dead." By the end of this volume though, a lot was revealed and was set on the most perfect cliff hanger, making me starved for the next volume.
The comedy has been very funny, and there was more of that than actual plot advancement, but I feel like without the comic relief, the series would lose a lot of its charm. The art has advanced nicely from volume one to now, the characters and settings are much more well defined, and their personalities definitely shine through.
I can't wait to see where this goes, especially since there's only two more volumes left.
WELCOME to the fifth volume of this crazy ride called Demon Diary - and to the actual plot doing plot things.
So a book turned Ranaef cold and evil (aka a "True Demon Lord")...which no one likes. Least of all Eclipse.
Sadly that Ranaef is AN ADORABLE PUPPY compared to the TRUE RANAEF that shows up at the end Apparently curses are difficult things to circumvent and instead of, yanno, actually killing Ranaef IV, they sort of summoned his son born 3500 years later to do the job for them. Sort of.
Look I don't remember this at all and if 34 year old Lexie is having issues you can be DAMN SURE 19 year old Lexie didn't understand.
Anyhow Eclipse looks Mondo unhappy, Erutis is confuzzled and Chris is just...conflicted.
Oohhh, things are really kicking off now! You can definitely tell the story is coming to an end, because this volume is intense!
There are still loads of little funny moments, but it's also getting serious in terms of the main story. We find out a lot of important info here, threads are brought together and the volume ends on a big cliff hanger.
Can't really go into any specifics because it's all full spoiler zone.
And now there's suddenly a plot, and the tone of the story is really serious. This series is so, so bizarre. I'm really not sure why I liked this series as a teenager, because it's a storytelling mess. I've decided that my rating of the series is mostly based on how much I remember liking it, rather than how I feel now. I honestly don't think I'd have read past the first couple of volumes if I'd tried starting the series today.
This volume begins a fun "there's a massive curse and time is out of whack and Raenef is gonna die and who is really behind all of this" episode. At least it follows the last volume's storyline, but I feel like there was very little plotting involved and a lot of, "hey, that sounds cool, let's do that".
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The true nature of Raenef is revealed, with his late forefather, Raenef the IV, haunting the scene, the chaos of why he died is finally revealed. Ultimately, it takes quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to get behind this plot, but it isn't the worst thing I've ever read.
Wah! It's almost done. So close to the end. Just two more and then this wonderful story will come to an end! *Blubbers* I don't want it to end! Why is this series so short!? It's not fair! *Flails* Just when it's really getting interesting. In this volume the story went supernova on the reader. It keeps getting more interesting as we see more of what's happened in the past and what's to come in the future! I am so hooked to this series right now!
Lee Yun Hee! Why do you torment me with this manga!? I know you love doing it! I can see it in the way you make me sink my teeth into these books like nothing! >_< Hee did, no surprise, another amazing job with this volume. Even more is revealed about the characters, the plot keeps moving forward, and my verb tenses keep switching back and forth but that's okay because I'm too excited and you can blame it on Hee for doing this with Demon Diary. She introduced "time" as well and I must warn the reader that if you are not paying real close attention to the volume, you will be lost as to what is going on. Not that it's confusing to understand, just that there's a lot of information so you want to make sure you get it all. KARA! I want to kick your ass! Why do your characters and scenery keep getting prettier!? That just CAN'T be possible! But alas... it is... for it is you... I hate you... *Takes Kara and shoves into her pocket* You are mine now. I claimed you. *Smirks*
Poor Raenef... he went through so much and is still going to be going through so much crap... everything just came crashing down into his lap and there's no napkin to wipe it clean... unless you consider Eclipse a napkin then everything will be fine. XD That man is so taken with Rae. You can just see, without squinting at all, how much he truly cares for Raenef. It's becoming so apparent that even the other characters are starting to see it. It's so amazing how both these characters are still growing in the fifth volume. In other mangas, the characters usually develop for the first one or two volumes. However, in Demon Diary, all the characters continue to grow until the very last volume. Even the side characters grow!
Even more background information was revealed about Erutis and her true reasons for why she's still in Raenef's castle as well! Chris didn't really grow much in this volume but it is because of him you get to find out a lot of history of the Hangma War, what Raenef IV was like, and even see him admitting to liking Rae! (Which was adorable, by the way!) A cameo is made by Krayon and you get to see more of his awesomeness~ He loves to break rules and red-headed girls~ THAT'S ALL I'M SAYING ABOUT IT! Meruhesae is here mostly to ponder what Raenef IV's true intentions and to point out that all is not as it seems. Speaking of Raenef IV, he's a jerk but that's to be expected of a powerful demon lord. In fact, I respect him a lot! His magical abilities weren't up to par with other demon lords so he did what anyone with a brain would do... he did research and STUDIED! I admire this man for his intelligence even if his naming things hobby is a bit odd. XD He's suppose to be the villian but honestly... I don't see him as one because what he ended up doing was the most logical path to take. The next volume will go more in depth with certain things so I'll leave you with, he's a pretty good character... even if he is taking away my Eclipse. *Hisses*
Really? Do I need to say it again? Of course I do! READ THIS SERIES ALREADY! HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO SAY IT UNTIL YOU GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULLS!? It is really worth your time and money. Especially if you are a magic lover! Magic is really big in this manga! The characters have funny one-liners that'll make you giggle your pants off. Plus, they are so loveable~ And in these later volumes, there's a lot more action! You cannot go wrong with this series. Besides, there's only seven volumes. It's not like you are going to have to waste a whole lot of money. And if you really are that cheap, look for it at the library! You get to read an awesome series without spending a penny! See? Everyone wins! ^_^ I really hope you enjoy!
This was an odd one. The fun element was sort of lost a bit due to some really odd plot points involving time travel, hopefully the next one will pick a bit more.
Raenef IV is back, and he seems to know how to get Raenef's personality back from the devious book. But what will be the price of his assistance? Demon Diary remains a great deal of fun, even if it's been somewhat doctored for American audiences (judging by all reports, anyhow). The series is winding to a close, but remains strong. ****
ok, these have completely sucked me in. the story is really good and the characters are very interesting. i guess after you read a lot of manga, you start to see how the authors think and write, so it's nice to be a newcomer and just be totally surprised by what happens next.
Kiris and Erutis' bickering is starting to grate. At first, it was funny but now that the main story is finally on, their childish banter just doesn't fit the seriousness of the situation and it's causing the story to drag.
Drama! We finally begin to understand what happened to Raenef IV and what will happen to Raenef V and it doesn't look good. I love the way nothing is ever quite what it first appears in this story. You never know what to expect next.
I didn’t like the new character, I felt the same as in volume 4, like there’s just too many characters now and I liked how it was in volumes 1-3 with the characters in those.
