Before sharing this "counting backwards" picture story with your child or a group of children play the "Whoops! Johnny" finger game with them.

Hold up your hand and touch each finger from the pinkie to the pointer, saying "Johnny"(pinkie),"Johnny"(ring),"Johnny"(tall),"Johnny"(pointer).
Now, slide your touching finger down the outside of pointer and up the inside of thumb saying "WHOOPS!". Touch thumb saying,"Johnny". Now do it in reverse with another child's name or your name (depending on if you're doing this with a group or at home with your own child). Repeat as many times with as many children's names as you like.

Okay, now count the fingers with the children, starting with a fist and lifting a finger for each one counted. 1 2 3 4 5 (other hand) 6 7 8 9 10. Now so the reverse, putting a finger down as you count with them backwards. 10 9 8 7 6 (other hand) 5 4 3 2 1 The reason for doing this is the story begins with 10 bears and in rhyming verses goes down to one.

You might also ask as you open the book to the end papers, "What color is this?" RED! "Is this anyone's favorite color?"

This was a short little book that counts backwards from 10-0 as it rhymes. The illustrations are well done and very detailed, they look to be painted. The layout of this book is text on the left and the illustration on the right. The font is centered and each page starts out with showing the actual number of bears and then when one bear goes away it has the number written out. This book is great for Kindergarten students learning to count backwards from 10 and still learning how to read. Students could count the bears to help learn how to count and the text has lots of rhyming and repetition which can help children learn how to read.

I loved this book! it was so cute and reminded me of the old books i used to read. the illustrations are great and it gives us the opportunity when reading to children or with children to point out things that we see in the pictures and learn new things. i have never heard of this book and it reminded me of 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed and i loved this book just as much. I will definitely be purchasing this book to add to my children's book collection.
