About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Сладурски комикс албум, който четем с кандидат второкласника. Стилът на арта и чувството за хумор на Морис са изключително свежи, панелите преливат от весели приключения, а отмятането на страниците е истинско удоволствие.

Malo naivno ali zabav strip di vidimo početke ovog heroja mog detinjstva. Priznajem da nisam znao da je nastao 1946. ali je fino odrastao :)

Manja preporuka kao strip, mada je i tako zanimljiv, al više kao deo istorije.

I standardno Čarbna Knjiga odradila odličan posao sa lokalizacijom i štampom.

Най-после стигнах и до тая група! Завръщам се за N-ти път, но какво пък. И тоя път ще гледам наистина да споделям често, защото се оказвам, че в последно време чета доста комикси, в това число и манга. :)
Днес ще ви досаждам с нещо супер различно от мангата и баналните истории за супер-герои(не ме кастрете за това изказване за супер-героите, моля. :( )
Ще си поговорим за "Лъки Люк" от легендарния Морис. От Артлайн предлагат на вниманието ни много хубаво книжно тяло, което има един доста носталгичен дух, не само заради съдържанието си. Не знам, не мога да го опиша. Абе странно е, но хубаво странно.
В този именуван "Том 1" са побрани три заглавия от поредицата за Лъки "Златната мина на Дик Дигър", "Гранд родео" и "Аризона". Това са творби създадени в периода 1946-1949 година(време в което ние сме бастисвали интелектуалците си)..

Когато от издателството обявиха за този комикс подходих с голям ентусиазъм! Много се зарадвах, няма да крия. Обичам такива неангажиращи комикси, които да чета късно вечер, когато знам, че на другата сутрин няма да ме събуди алармата, а жаждата за кафенце. Странното беше, че по някое време получих съобщение от издателството в което казваха да очаквам поръчката от озон, както и да е с два лева по-евтина. Ами добре, кой съм, че да споря.

Мигновено се потопих в дивия свят на Лъки. Никога до този момент не бях чел комикс за него, единствения ми досег с този образ беше благодарение на анимациите и то преди доста години.

Веднага едно нещо ми направи впечатление и привлече вниманието ми. Действието в комикса е адски динамично, почти не видях, някакви статични сцени. Имам чувството, че докато погледа ми шари по страниците се прехвърлих някъде там в Аризона или на златните мини... Много ми хареса и диалога между героите, особено местата с едни леко остарели и според някои позабравени думи.

Много ми беше интересно да проследя промяната в стила на самите рисунки в отделните истории. Много ми харесва как в началото на книгата всичко е едно такова простичко, семпло, а колкото повече приближаваме към края, толкова повече всичко става по-детайлно и изразително. Голямо достойство според мен поне е класическата подредба на отделните панели. Изчистено и семпло. Знаеш кое след което следва и всичко е наред. Това навярно звучи глупаво, но съм традиционалист и точно тази подредба на панелите най-много ме радва. :)

Не бих казал, че имам любим разказ от този първи том. Ако го кажа, рискувам да пренебрегна едва ли не останалите, а не искам това. По-скоро ще спомена кои истории ми направиха по-силно впечатление от другите и защо.

• "Аризона 1880" откриващия разказ. Хареса ми точно заради тези изчистени рисунки, които споменах, заради динамиката на сюжета и готините лафове.

• "Двойникът на Лъки Люк" ми хареса заради крими нотката. Сякаш този разказ е с най-заплетен сюжет от всички. В него всички се чудят кой е Лъки и кой измамника. А де!

• "Градн родео" ме впечатли с това, че някои от рисунките му са големи и пълни с детайли, в някой се взирах дълго и откривах нови и нови елементи.

• "Златна треска в Бъфало Крийк" ми харесва поради същата причина, навсякъде множество малки рисунчици, нещо като първообраз на дудъл арта, намирам нови и нови неща всеки път като ги видя. А и историята е забавна и увлекателна.

• "Лъки Люк срещу Сигарет Сизар" според мен е един от големите диаманти в изданието. Много харесва как враждата между двамата се разгръща и взима своя връх. Малко или много ми напомни на други златни класики.



"Лъки Люк" е сред комиксите в колекцията ми за които не мога да кажа нищо лошо и да искам. Колкото и да се опитвам да намеря нещо за което да се хвана не мога и това е. Не е и задължително, все пак. Това което бих променил е кориците, вместо меки твърди. :) Друга страхотна хрумка са снимките и рисунките които са на гръбчетата на всяка заглавна страница, на отделните разкази. Много приятен "бонус", който е уж незначителен, а всъщност носи доста голяма добавена стойност, тъй като ни представя живота от онова време.

Силно ви препоръчвам изданието и се надявам в най-скоро време на бял свят да се появи ново! :)

Много благ сборник на първите приключения на тоз каубоец. Доказва как комикс може да е детински, но забавен и за порастнали дебили! Макар да са излизали между клая на ВСВ и 1950-а, "Марвел" имат много какво да научат от тях. ;)

This is the first volume of “Lucky Luke” comic book series in its “The Complete Collection” American edition. Originally appearing in 1949 for the first time in Dupuis Publishing.

In this collected American edition are printed seven different stories: “Arizona 1880”, “Dick Digger’s Gold Mine”, “Lucky Luke’s Double”, “Rodeo”, “Desperado City”, “The Buffalo Creek gold rush” and “Lucky Luke versus Cigarette Cesar”.

FRANCO-BELGIAN COMICS

The collaboration between France and Belgium in the genre of comic strips & comic books is monumental, figuring many of the most iconic examples of the genre, not only Asterix, but also The Smurfs, Tin Tin, Lucky Luke, Le Petit Spirou, and many, many, MANY others…

…generating their own inner genre named, obviously, Franco-Belgian comics, considered along with United States & Great Britain comics and Japanese manga, as one of the three most influential and relevant examples of the comic book field.

(I plan to read in the future other titles of this genre, therefore, in the first volume of each title, it will be normal to find this same general introduction.)


NOTHING LIKE AMERICAN WESTERN…FROM EUROPE!

It’s curious how the American Western is a genre that sometimes is better portraited outside of United States like the Italian “Spaguetti Western” and this Franco-Belgian comic book of Lucky Luke becoming easily the best known and popular “american” cowboy in comics.

I can understand that nowadays is not recommended to promote smocking (but I wonder why drinking alcohol doesn’t have the same kind of witch hunt) but it’s kinda absurd that Morris, its creator, were critized for having Lucky Luke smocking in its classic run since if he was an adult in the old American west, it’s only logical that he would smoking (and drinking alcohol) due in that era of history was normal that, you can’t (or you shouldn’t) re-write history, bad or good, history should be told or portraited like it happened.

In this gorgeous first volumen of the american edition known as “The Complete Collection”, you won’t have the most characteristic look of Lucky Luke (in fact you can appreciate how the look of the face of Lucky Luke is evolutioning during the run of this first seven tales but without still reaching his most recognizable look) but unlike the first story of Tin Tin where the artwork is just awful, here you will find gorgeous artwork in characters and scenarios. Jolly Jumper, his white horse, the “smartest horse in the west”, is without a doubt smart and even sometimes you hear him talk (like Scooby-Doo) but later you can read his thoughts.

Also, you will find an extensive information about Morris, his personal life, his inspirations for this comic book and the impact of the series.


Arizona 1880 (4 stars)

It’s the very first Lucky Luke story with a very cartoonish look in Lucky Luke and while the story is quite simple, it’s quite entertaining and a worthy beginning, where Lucky Luke without much background of his personal past, he reaches Nugget City and having to deal with an insidious criminal and his pair of minions.

Dick Digger’s Gold Mine (5 stars)

Dick Digger is an old man that he can’t just keep his mouth shut about having found a gold mine and the same pair of minions (but just them, the boss is still in jail I guess) are starting to look for the mine without realizing that they already have the map in a bottle of Dick Digger.

Lucky Luke’s Double (4 stars)

Lucky Luke arrives to another town and he finds out that there is a criminal in prison looking just like him (even the same wardrobe!) and the band of that criminal kidnaps Lucky Luke to interchange him in the Town’s Jail.

Rodeo (4 stars)

Lucky Luke in participating in a rodeo event, when a nefarious participant steals the money of the rodeo grand prize.

Desperado City (5 stars)

Lucky Luke arrives to Desperado City which is a very dirty and sinful town, where he soon enough will have to “clean” the town. Easily the best written tale in this first collection.

The Buffalo Creek gold mine (5 stars)

A very funny tale where people starting to think that there is gold in Buffalo Creek which is only a creek but suddenly you have train and a whole town emerging due the bunch of people arriving there to look for the gold. Easily the funniest tale (showing a true old cartoon style of narrative) of this first collection.

Lucky Luke versus Cigarette Cesar (3 stars)

The title explains much of what happens, where indeed Lucky Luke meets this character known as Cigarette Cesar and he has to face him to bring him to justice. It’s not a bad story but easily is the weakest of the collected tales in this first collection.

Esta excelente colección comienza con un monográfico preparado por Christelle y Bertrand Pissavy-Yvernault sobre Maurice de Beveren a.k.a. Morris, el creador de Lucky Luke. Muestra como en la vida, aunque residía en una casa acomodada, tenía todo en su contra. Sus amigos, su familia y la escuela estaban todos en contra de que él dibujara. Para apasionados fans del vaquero solitario, esta es una pieza de literatura imperdible.

Esto me ayudó a darme cuenta que Morris, en mi opinión, es tan importante como figuras de la talla de Stan Lee y Jack Kirby. Mientras ellos crearon muchos personajes, y a veces Lee olvidaba el nombre de algunos, Morris le dedicó vida y amor a este solo personaje para volverlo tan importante en la cultura de las historietas.

Además de que viene con con distintas historias, que aquí también voy a reseñar.

Empezando por Arizona 1880, una historia bastante simple. Unos criminales roban oro y LL tiene que atraparlos. Lo impresionante de este trabajo es el trabajo de secuencias. Es ligero en diálogo y es más acción que otra cosa. El dominio de Morris en sus tempranos trabajos es impresionante en como un elemento de un panel ayuda a pasar al otro como si tus ojos no se movieran, sino que las tiras mueven tus ojos. En este mismo volumen se encuentra Lucky Luke contra Cigarette Cesar, otra historia de LL teniendo que atrapar a un maleante. Aquí vemos un Luke más aterrador y molesto. Cigarette Cesar tiene una deuda con él y no descansará hasta atraparlo. Todo se lleva a cabo en honor a la comedia, como siempre, excelentes secuencias y paneles llenos de acción.

La Mina de Oro de Dick Digger. Un poco similar a la anterior. Aquí no es sólo Lucky Luke defendiéndose pero defendiendo a otra persona. Muestra nuestro héroe irreprochable en sus primeras facetas bajo la orden de hacerlo un héroe para niños. Lo cual en entregas posteriores cambiará. Dentro de este volumen (el cual es el primero publicado por Dupuis), se encuentran 2 historias de una página que sirven como un extra para el lector llamadas Lucky Luke y su caballo. Son decentes trabajos para relleno. Junto con ellas, se encuentra, El Doble de Lucky Luke, es una pieza cliché donde parece que Morris solo estaba entrenando. Hay algunas ideas interesantes que a veces no van a ninguna parte pero otras te detienen a apreciarlas.

Rodeo. Forma parte del volumen 2 publicado por Dupuis. Parece que esta historia es para Morris darse el gusto de dibujar una competencia de rodeo. Me gusta como en el pasado hubo espacio para experimentar en los inicios de un artista. Claro que no es todo experimental. Es también una clásica historia de que los tramposos no ganan. Como de costumbre, los paneles de Morris están llenos de vida. Especialmente cuando se da el lujo de hacer un plano general y puede rellenarlo de detalles que de por sí podrían ser su propia historia. En este mismo volumen se encuentra Desperado City, donde se debe enfrentar a los hermanos Pistola, los precursores de los Dalton, además de todo un pueblo de vaqueros. Toda la secuencia es digna de replicar si alguna vez de hace otra película sobre el personaje. Además tenemos la historia La Fiebre de Oro de Buffalo Creek. Y una fiebre fue. Esta historia es un claro ejemplo del efecto mariposa, donde una pequeña broma se vuelve una tormenta. Aquí Morris desde luego que parodia el hecho de que la gente de volvía loca al encontrar oro, pero, ¿donde termina la parodia y donde comienza la historia? Esta historia solo con el concepto llama la atención, pero fue bastante mediocre.

This is a composite review for Lucky Luke: The Complete Collection, Vols.1-5.

I have long heard that the French have a real love for Westerns, but you really see it here in these extremely well put-together compilations of Lucky Luke, a seminal Western cartoon by the French cartoonist Morris. Volumes 1-3 contain an awful lot of biography on the cartoonist, which I'm not sure we really need. And, throughout, be prepared for some racist depictions of Native Americans, Chinese, and Black characters. These stories were published in the 1940s and 1950s, and what we see here is nowhere as bad as some of the stuff we see in, say, Tintin. But still, it's no excuse.

For the most part, these stories are droll little adventures where the stalwart cowboy Lucky Luck and his trusty steed Jolly Jumper wander the U.S. Wild West encountering various rascals and villains. Through a mix of strength, marksmanship and cunning, Lucky Luke manages to get one over on the bad guys in an episodic, "all's well that end's well" narrative with no real stakes or progression to it. That's the point, though; the point of Lucky Luke is to dwell in its world and enjoy the fairly bloodless dramas unfold. We know it's fairly one-dimensional going in, but that's alright. For what it is, Lucky Luke is quite a lot of fun, despite its warts.

I'm planning a trip to Belgium, so I decided to take a closer look at Belgian comics -- at least the ones available in English through my library network -- before my trip, which includes visiting the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels. The Lucky Luke series is considered a classic, so I gave it a try.

I enjoyed the introduction about the early days of comics in Belgium and their influences, and the tales of how Morris (the creator of this series) and several of his colleagues got their start in the business, and how their styles evolved over time. I especially enjoyed learning about the trip that Morris and the others took to California and Mexico, and how they incorporated what they observed in their comics.

I liked the style of the drawings; it reminded me of storyboards for films from my days as a film student (many years ago). The first story includes a terrific sequence of a classic Hollywood film trope: the saloon brawl - kinetic, well drawn, and often conveyed the action and humor without words.

The reason I didn't finish the book was the stories themselves - full of one-dimensional characters, cliches, and stereotypes from a bygone era -- not what I'm interested in reading nowadays, and I'd rather move on to the next books on my list.

2 1/2 stars. Either there's something really lost in translation or there's a BIG nostalgia factor involved in these reviews and ratings, imo. The art is quite competent, which is the reason I bumped it to a three, but these aren't even good children's adventure comics, let alone classics of the field like Asterix or Tintin. Period racism consistently featured throughout makes them deeply inappropriate for 21st century kids, as well.

Una gozada nostálgica. Este cómic era el eterno tercero en lucha entre Asterix y Tintin pero la calidad que mantuvo Morris y el humor de sus historias son geniales. En este primer tomo vemos un dibujo menos pulido pero unas historias mágnificas como la del vendedor de medicinas y el cowboy altísimo que se enfrentan a Lucky Luke.
