Mochtar Lubis is the acclaimed author of a number of novels and several collections of short stories. Originally written in Dutch, Land Under the Rainbow is the first popular history of Indonesia to appear in English. Written in an extremely accessible style, the book offers a narration of the highlights of Indonesian history through Indonesian eyes.

Mochtar Lubis lahir tanggal 7 Maret 1922 di Padang. Mendapat pendidikan di Sekolah Ekonomi INS Kayu Tanam, Sumatera serta Jefferson Fellowship East and West Center, Universitas Hawai. Aktif sebagai penerbit dan Pemimpin Redaksi Harian Indonesia Raya Jakarta. Memperoleh Magsaysay Award untuk jurnalistik dan kesusasteraan, Golden Pen Award dari International Association of Editors and Publishers, Hadiah Sastra dari Badan Musyawarah Kebudayaan Nasional, Hadiah Penghargaan dari Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia, Hadiah dari Departemen P dan K tahun 1975 bagi novelnya "Harimau! Harimau!", dan Hadiah sastra dari Yayasan Jaya Raya untuk buku terbaik tahun 1977-1978, tanggal 15 Desember 1979, untuk romannya "Maut dan Cinta".

Buku-bukunya yang telah terbit antara lain: "Senja di Jakarta", "Jalan Tak Ada Ujung" (terbit dalam berbagai bahasa), dan "Etika Pegawai Negeri" (ed.bersama James Scott). Selain itu ada juga buku-buku tentang liputan dan pers, bacaan anak-anak, dan dua ceramah yang diterbitkan sebagai buku, yaitu "Manusia Indonesia" dan "Bangsa Indonesia". Semasa hidupnya beliau menjadi Anggota banyak lembaga penting, seperti Pimpinan Umum majalah Horison, Editor majalah Media (yang diterbitkan di Hongkong oleh Press Foundation of Asia); anggota Board of the International Association for Cultural Freedom, dan anggota Board of the International Press Institute (Zurich).

Beliau juga banyak mencurahkan perhatiannya pada masalah lingkungan hidup dan masalah-masalah ekologi. Mengalami tahanan penjara selama 9 tahun (1956-1965) dalam masa pemerintahan Presiden Soekarno; dan pada tahun 1974 mengalami dua bulan tahanan setelah terjadinya peristiwa "Malari" bersamaan waktunya dengan pembreidelan Indonesia Raya. Beliau juga pernah menjadi Direktur Yayasaan Obor Indonesia.

De Indonesische geschiedenis door journalist en schrijver Mochtar Lubis. Het omvat een grote tijdspanne, beginnende in de prehistorie, maar is het een relatief beknopt boek. Grotendeels een feitelijk overzicht met beperkte beschouwing. Voor de geïnteresseerden zal de waarde vooral zitten in de honderden archieffoto’s, schilderijen, tekeningen en kaarten die door het hele boek te vinden zijn.

Opvallend is wel de behandeling van de periode van Sukarno’s regime na de onafhankelijkheid. Lubis was als journalist een uitgesproken criticus van Sukarno en heeft daarvoor ook lange periodes in detentie gezeten. Dat wordt niet vermeld in het boek want het is geen boek over zijn leven, maar Lubis grijpt de kans om flink los te gaan op Sukarno. Het is het meest kritische gedeelte in het boek maar hij vliegt iets teveel uit de bocht. Al met al is het verfrissend om de Indonesische geschiedenis vanuit een Indonesisch perspectief te horen. Lubis ruimt op het einde ook tijd in om de verschillende Nederlandse (post-)koloniale houdingen en literatuur te vergelijken, en -hoe fijn- ook de rol van vrouwen in het Indonesische verzet extra te belichten.

This book feels like it's trying to be several things at once. It wants to be a brief overview of the history of Indonesia from an Indonesian perspective. It would be great if it had stuck to that premise. But it often reads like a very dry list of details instead, occasionally interspersed with observations. If you're going to try to cover many centuries of a land as huge as Indonesia in 200 pages, you need to skip over some details, but the author apparently doesn't want to, and the result is it often feels like you're reading a timeline kind of history in paragraph form.

This book open with a beautiful narrative about a Land Under the Rainbow and a less-explored perspective of it's history

Yet I think the book is not developed well as it tried to explain so many things in so little pages and it can be quite confusing sometime

But I really recommend to read this book especially if you are interested about Indonesian from a point-of-view of an idealistic, honest, and a great journalist

Menemukan buku ini secara tidak sengaja di Pasar Festival, Kuningan. Kalau nggak salah ingat, nama tokonya Newstand. Tapi sampai sekarang belum dibaca serius. Bahasa Inggris sih :)
