I read this with my 6 and 7 year old students who have already read the science series Let’s Read and Find Out. This was a nice next step in learning about the weather, but I’m not sure I would call this a living book.

Citation by: Ashley Hill

Type of Reference: Handbook

Call Number: 551.5

Description: A handbook used to help students learn about weather covering a vast amount of information.

Relevance and Relationship: This material works well for the school library because there are a lack of handbooks covering this topic and is good for students who are approaching an inquiry project.

Purpose: The purpose of the material is to teach students about weather in the United States. It helps students learn about weather but also can be utilized by adults.

Validity: The Audubon Society has published many books and this is a relevant resource for the library that has few resources on this type of information

Format: This books has visuals to help students understand clouds, weather maps, etc. It also has a reference section to help students locate information in the book and a glossary for students to understand weather related terms.

Arrangement and Presentation: This is divided into sections one that helps students who observe weather, another that helps students identify weather conditions, and finally the reference section.

Diversity: Students need more resources to help them inquire. This book meets that need. All students can use this material. Yet, students of other cultures may not know the weather related terms used in America and could use this as a resource.
