Legend of the Oceina Dragon

Rate this book
Darien Oceina is the youngest son of the Great Dragon Lord of the Water. For years he's loved and cherished Tai Dawson from afar. Tai is a simple, ordinary girl who doesn't even know Darien exists. On his eighteenth birthday, he chooses her as his wife. But there’s one problem: She thinks his choice means she's going to be offered as a sacrifice to the Dragon Lord, but instead, she's forced to move to his home, far away, to give up her life and be his bride.

When she first sees Darien after the ceremony, she doesn’t expect to feel anything but hatred toward him. The two are struggling with the complications of a new marriage when their nation is attacked by a rival dragon species. Together they learn to love one another while they struggle to stay one step ahead in a game where the prize is their survival.

What I liked about it:

the beginning- reminded me of the story from mythology where Andromeda was being sacrificed to the sea monster

the author gives us enough of a glimpse of the world of Dragons and their different types which intrigues and makes you want to read more

the burning ritual when the father died was another thing I really liked

how the issue of Darien’s falling for Tai was dealt with and would otherwise have become “insta-love”!

how Tai and Darien continued to struggle with their issue and then came together

What I didn’t like:

Tai sleeping with a guy she barely knew and then blaming him for it

how hard it was for everybody to believe that the fire dragons were raising an army.

I would have liked to know a bit more about Darien’s brothers.

This book is fast paced and different from the other fantasy books featuring vamps/weres. The series will be interesting to read since the future books will probably be about the other types of dragons . Plus, I want to see dragons in action!

****Audio Review*****

This was a re-read for me. I read the original book a few years back and decided to experience it in audio this time around.

Any story with dragons makes me perk up and take notice so I was eager to dive in. This is an interesting blend of forced marriage, suspense, magic, and young adult elements. I enjoy the dragon world that the author created.

The story opens with young Kai thinking she is on the point of being sacrificed to the dragon lord for the purpose of keeping her whole island safe. It was an arrangement made long ago in that the dragons would act as protectors in exchange for a human girl's sacrifice ever so many years. But she is shocked to discover that instead of being eaten, she has been chosen to be a young dragon's wife. Loss of everything she is used to and most especially loss of control over her life leaves her antagonistic, betrayed, bitter, and worst of all attracted, but wanting to deny it. Her dragon husband is kind in the face of her fury and truly does care for her and loves her as much as she wants to deny it. Kai can't allow any true feelings to develop because she promised herself that never would she be like her mother who gave her heart and had it crushed. If only, she wasn't coming to want and love Darien.

Darien is a water dragon and son of the Great Dragon Lord, Orion. He is a 'touched' dragon in that he possesses more magic and he is also responsible for the death of his mother in childbirth as a result. Darien's guilt and the blame from others has left him a little broken and his magic makes him an oddity and others fear him. This is why when it is his turn to choose his bride, he is careful to watch and observe. He spends years observing Kai and knows she is the one. He is excited to finally be old enough to claim her. But what is the happiest day of his life, soon ends in sadness when she rejects him, wants nothing to do with him, and hates him. He knows that he needs to give her time and he does. But as the days and weeks stretch out, he starts to lose hope.

Meanwhile, Darien is aware of trouble brewing. His father is worried about some vague, unnamed treachery from one of the other dragon kingdoms. Darien is mystified as to why his father takes him into his confidence and even wishes him there when the leaders meet. Darien takes an attitude because it brings him away from Kai while he is trying to woo her and he knows he is behaving horribly in the face of his father finally recognizing him, but he can't stop.

And then his whole world crashes down on him. Will Kai stay by his side or will she flee?

The story has much going on. Right about the time young Darien is only thinking about Kai other things are going on the greater world around him. His destiny has arrived. This is an interesting coming of age story. While it has strong YA elements particularly the way Kai and Darien go about their stormy courtship, there is a complex worldbuilding, family dynamics, and politic intrigue in play that give this story nice layers.

I was only meh about the romance probably because of my age and the romance was a young one even if it was a permanent marriage.
But the part that I loved was the strong dragon presence and seeing Darien come of age and come into his own. He starts out thinking his father hates him for being the reason his mother is dead, thinking his mother must have resented having to make the choice between his life and hers, and hating his own extra gifts. He is unsure and fearful. But then, Orion works to make Darien see things differently. Loved all that.
And the political intrigue going on with the dragons was fascinating. I like the set up for what is to come.

The story ends abruptly on a high note, but foreshadows more troubles. It's a cliffie and leaves a lot more questions than answers. These are always hard for me and I have to think of it as the first installment in a larger, longer story.

The narration was well-done. It was my first encounter with Corey Snow. I thought he did alright with the various voices and kept my interest on the story. It was somewhat amusing when he did Kai's voice because she is a young girl, but it wasn't too bad. I would definitely listen to more books he has done.

In summary, this was a good beginning to a series. The romance is okay and I think younger folk would appreciate it more than me. The worldbuilding and intrigue were strong and engaging components as was the coming of age of Darien the hero. I can easily recommend this to any age YA audience because it is a sweet romance and there is no language and only one moderately violent scene.

Wow! That's the only thing I could say after finishing the book.

Mrs. Jenkins has created a brilliantly original story that is full of romance, mystery, powerful emotions, great characters, and dragons! This is the second series I've read about dragons, Eragon being the first. While Eragon was interesting and action filled, Legend of the Oceina is full of the love and romance that those books were missing. If you are anywhere near the romance junkie I am, this book will definitely not disappoint! I loved all the characters and could relate to them. The emotions they felt were palpable. Every detail is layed out perfectly, the dialog is great, and the descriptions are fantastic! Incredible world building, too! And have I mentioned that I love the gorgeous covor? Unfortunately, my Nook only displays it in black and white and does not do it justice.

Another thing I love about the story is how the characters develop throughout the novel. Darien loves Tai before they ever meet, and his love for her only grows. *Swoon* Tai doesn't love Darien right off the bat. If anything, she hates him for taking her away from her old life and forcing her into their marriage. I love that Tai is strong and hardheaded at times, not in a bad way.

I finished this book in a few hours, racing through it without bothering to check the page numbers. The ending is sweet, satisfying, and leaves you wanting more. The story is a breath of fresh air. You get the paranormal romance you've come to love, but with something different and extraordinary-the dragons. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book and am going to get my own copy of the book to read whenever I want.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go read it again. :)

I'm having a hard time rating this book. I think my rating stands between a 2.5 and 3.

The idea behind the story was very original and creative. I really loved the idea of the dragons - shifting into human form and taking human brides. It was all very interesting and different from other stories in this genre.

The problem I had was with the execution of the story. The writing was disjointed at times, leaving me confused and sometimes lost. The grammar and punctuation was also lacking quite often, leading to more confusion.

The main characters, Tai and Darien, were good together. Tai is a beautiful and strong girl; Darien is a very patient boy with the best of intentions. On their own, however, they spent the better part of the book being angst-filled (more Tai than Darien), brooding (both), and overly self-judgmental (more Darien than Tai) and harsh (Tai) in the beginning. Then they flipped a switch and all those feelings of inadequateness and judgment were dropped, not to be mentioned again.

There were definitely parts of the story that I liked, and definitely those that I didn't. I enjoyed the book more than an, "eh, it was okay" rating, but not sure if I could stand strong behind the "I liked it" (with a smile) rating overall.

I wish the author luck and success with the saga; hopefully it just gets better with each installment. :o)

A delightful fantasy, this story is unusual in that it is set in modern times. Characters had their cell phones and other creature gadgets and yet the world seemed much less populous than our world. The lives of the inhabitants seemed less frantic-paced, more spiritually guided – and then, of course, there are the magnificent sentient, telepathic dragons. I could not put the book down once I began reading. This is the first book in a planned series but in many ways, as I read, I felt as though I was in the middle of the series rather than at the beginning. The author left herself plenty of wiggle room for additional novels, fortunately for those of us captivated by this world. I noticed a few odd turns of phrase and a couple of places I became confused as to what was actually meant, but honestly, those small moments could not lessen my enjoyment of this tale. A fantastical world is being created and I believe, without a doubt, this world will become well-loved by fans everywhere.

Every 8 years in Oceina Island the priests make a sacrifice to the great water dragon Lord Oceina. The sacrifice has to be a pure girl no older than 18 years old. If they refuse to this sacrifice the island will lose the protection the water dragons offer and will be left at the mercy of other species of dragons that are not as compassionate as they are. What the people from Oceina don’t know is that the sacrifice is not what they think it is, but much more than that.

This book is a contemporary fantasy with a mix of dragons, high school, spells etc. The author goes straight to the point without leaving out any details. I was engage from the beginning and never felt the need to take a break from the book. The characters were amazing (especially Darien) and the chemistry between Darien and Tai was romantic and funny at times. Is a fantastic and easy read.

The first few pages were a bit confusing, BUT you will be thankful for them later. You will see the stages of love unfold between two people who at first are not on the same page. You will be amazed as you watch Tai grow out of her shell where she has hid from the world. Both Tai and Darien have great potential to grow as characters and this was a great way to start the series. A lot of ground work has been layed out here. You learn of the dragon races, some of their traditions and you get a hint of their magic.
I love the way she has mixed these world together, and would recommend this book to anyone who loves, love, dragons, adventure, magic, or just a great book in general. I look forward to reading and reviewing book 2.

I was a bit worried at the start of the book, as I found myself confused right off the bat. Thankfully by the time I hit chapter three (short chapters) everything fell into place and I was off and running.

Jenkins is very creative with building her own view of dragons. The four dragon races that represent the elements have qualities and characteristics that most people could only dream of.

Her characters show great potential for growth which is necessary for a good series. It was a novel worth reading. All in all, it's a series that I look forward to reading more of.

I may have some partial bias because I'm friends with the author, but I really love this book of hers. Even back before it was published and I read little pieces as she finished them, I begged her to keep writing it and was infinitely frustrated when she would tease me about what was going to happen.

This is a story that is addictive like crack. Its got its flaws, which all books do. No book is absolutely perfect. But despite those, this is great and I want to read more in this world.

An amazing read for anyone who loves dragons! Jenkins builds a fantastic world centered around the life of Darien, the next Oceina Dragon lord, and his wife, Tai (not by her choice). Jenkins combines romance, mystery, betrayal and death in the first installment of the Dragons Saga, a series I can't wait to read the next of. Darien and Tai are characters that stay with you long after the book has been closed.

I read this because I was bored. I expected to be amused at how stupid it was, because that's what usually happens with dragon shifter stories.
This was actually a pleasant surprise! It is by no means earth shattering or outstandingly original, but it is well told and a cut above the average drivel.
There were a few things that I might have liked to happen differently, and the suspense never lasts for more than a moment, but sometimes that's what you want! All in all, this was a step above the usual dragon stuff.

Lord Oceina approaches the island Of Oceina when it is time for the giving of a sacrifice. This sacrifice enables the island people to live without fear of the other dragons nearby, and live life without worrying about the lives of their people.

The sacrifice must be a virgin, no older than 18 years old, of pure blood; this sacrifice is given to Lord Oceina as a trade for peace, safety and protection for the island residents. The residents find the sacrifice is just and acceptable and even the bearer considers them self to be worthy and special to be chosen. They approach their day of sacrifice to only find it is not what the past has portrayed but a whole different meaning to the word sacrifice.

There are four dragon species, representing different elements and each having their own qualities and abilities which are indescribably mystical.

Darien is the youngest of his species, Lord Oceina being his father hands Darien his sacrifice on his 18th birthday. His birthday gift if you may call it that - her name is Tai. A sacrifice I’m sure they will both remember.

My review !!

A story filled with mystery, fantasy, love, passion, murder and betrayal. Characters and plot show a huge amount of potential and area for growth and expansion to be a fantastic series. This story alone I found Unique!!!!! And incredibly intriguing. I assume for myself this alone, as there is nothing on the shelves like this and alone the world that J K Jenkins created is amazing and full of fantasy.

Characters I enjoyed, Darien - a girls dream come true, love dovey, lovable, caring and very tolerable. Not afraid to show his true self and feelings to his one true love. Darien is the one and only of his kind, once again unique to the dragon race, he has powers above all others. I’m sure in time his character will show great strengths and maturity to undertake his role he has been left to - to rule Oceina. He came across slightly timid , and shy and not outspoken, but given time I’m sure we will see a change in his character, this I look forward to.

Tai - I found conflicted due to her circumstances, but who wouldn’t. Thrown into a world she knows nothing about, and given a second chance at life if you may call it. She deals with feelings she is unsure of, a love that she never wanted, and a man willing to give her everything he has to keep her. In time I’m sure Tai's character will grow and mature, she is caring and considerate enough to give life a go. Tai and Darien's love has its cute moments, filled with love, laughter, lust and a little passion. Both new to this side of things, it was limited, but love does find its way .

Overall, All the secondary characters I enjoyed, all fitting into the world and plot that Jenkins has created. At first I found it a little muddled – a tad confused - in the first few chapters having to slow down the reading to get the story concept, but after that the storyline flowed and continued till the end. The story does leave room for more, that I am sure will reflect upon the next book in the series. Here I hope to see alot of character development and growth as the story grows stronger. Book one giving us the insight to the world created and touching bases with the fantasy world that this author has made.

Full of lots of things to think about, a world you could never imagine and a storyline that will have you thinking way past the finish line.

I had to go a friends and explain this book, as it really amazed me , we sat drank coffee and discussed how someone could think to create this world of the Oceina Dragons. !!! Not normally something I would read but I am certainly glad I did.

I found myself mesmerized by the plot of this story, it’s always nice to read something new and refreshing and I eagerly await book 2.

Extraordinary and Unmatched by any other story.

This review was orginally posted at Pages of Forbidden Love

My Thoughts:
I instantly wanted to read this book because there are not many books where dragons are involved, well not unless you are going to read an epic fantasy title. So I was super excited about a book that featured romance and shape shifter males that turned into dragons. This one certainly is a mix between YA and Adult so I would say maybe save this one for older teens because there is some mention of things that go on behind the scenes, if you know what I mean.

Right from the start I was really enjoying this one, I loved both Darien and Tai. Both characters seemed so independent but yet needing of something that was missing in their life. After the first 20 pages there was a major twist in the plot that I’m still not sure whether I cared for this twist or not. At first I was outraged that Tai would even behave in such a way, sure I understood her motivation for doing it but really?! From here on out I found myself falling into the pattern of not really loving what was going on. Sure I really enjoyed learning about the dragons and who they worked and the different clans but I was shying away from the main characters because it seemed that they would change who they were to try to fit whatever molds the author put in front of them. This really started to annoy me but I kept reading because I was hoping for some of the stronger parts of the book to bring the book back to a good place.

Eventually, I did start to enjoy the book again after taking a day away from it in order to calm my slight attitude problem with the beginning of the story. I actually started to enjoy the relationship that Darien and Tai were having even though I felt like Tai was forced to submit to Darien too much, she was suppose to be this great, strong character and at times I certainly felt that slip a little. I did start to realize that no matter how strong someone is they do slip in their perfection from time to time and so I guess I allowed Tai and Darien to have their slip ups. I did enjoy the relationship pattern that they eventually reached though.

Overall, I did have some issues with this book. There were some editing errors that seemed to have been overlooked through the editing process but I have hope that those will be fixed if the edition ever re-releases. Then you know I had some trouble with exactly who the characters were, thought I did like the romance. Another small issue I had was how much the influence of God was used in this book, it seemed that the author threw God in several times and kept repeating that God gave Darien some of his gifts. I just felt like this was repeated a little too much for my personal taste. I know this review sounds very negative at this point but I promise there were some good things about this book and I do plan on reading the second book in this series so that I can see if the author grew at all as a writer between the first book in this series and the second book. I still have hope with this cast of characters because I do want to continue to see them so something certainly did go right in this book. Do to the mixed feelings on this book this one gets 3.5 stars from me for having some flaws but still keeping me intrigued.

To start, I will say that I have never read a book with so many grammatical errors. The punctuation was terrible. Also, there were many places where letters were left off the ends of words, and the wrong was word was used. For example, I saw 'threw' and 'through' mixed up in at least three places.

I think the plot was really creative and had a lot of potential. I will say that the entire book was kind of slow, and about one hundred pages in I did consider quitting. But I forced through. I'll say I liked it, but I'm rating it as it was ok. They main characters pent a lot of time fighting, and that bothered me. The politics of the story were vague and didn't make much sense. I may read the rest of the series just to see if the story gets better. There wasn't a lot of action and the only scene that could have been exciting was choppy at best, and completely superficial (as in elementary writing) at worst. All the descriptions of magic were confusing and not done very well.

This is the first book I have reviewed in a long time with a less than three star rating, but honestly, I feel like it was a bit of a waste of time. I had a lot of hope for this book and was really disappointed when I saw so many negative reviews on Goodreads.

Another point I didn't like was Darien was kind of a baby. I wish he had taken control of situations more instead of getting scared and letting other people handle them for him.

As for the romance. Ugh. I'm sorry but it was terrible. They were awkward with each other, and the descriptions were pathetic. Obviously this is YA and so you don't have to get that detailed. But seriously, most of the "romance" scenes ended in, "and then they made love." Like, really? Then they would either fall asleep or do something else boring. Like write up charts. Pardon my language but, what the hell? Their kisses were un-descriptive and stirred no emotions in me. As for the ending, well ...

While I love dragons, this book was a bit disappointing.

Yours Truly,

I don’t think I’ve ever been more frustrated with a book. Dragon stories really draw me, and I thought that this premise seemed unique, a fresh take on an old tale. A virgin is sacrificed to a dragon only to find out that said dragon is one super sexy dude who wants to spend the rest of his life with her…steamy.

Ugh…I couldn’t have been more wrong. Although the main characters are teenagers, I felt the content would have been more suitable for NA or even just adult. I see few teenagers being able to relate to marriage and having kids. I’m sure there are exceptions of course. That’s just my impression.

The story (spoilers within):
Tai was chosen to be the sacrifice that would appease the dragons and keep humanity safe. She believed she would be eaten and blindly accepted her fate, which included a vow to stay celibate to death. This would have been fine, heroic even, if she hadn’t proceeded to pass out under the dragon’s magic and woken to make love with the first man she saw (Darien). This was a bit trampy, IMO, but not a deal breaker. After consummating their marriage and realizing that Darien is actually the dragon, Tai freaks out and contemplates running away. I might have bought this reaction if she hadn’t been so okay with the alternative. How is living with a sexy dragon (one who worships the ground she walks on) at all worse than being eaten alive?! Similarly, Darien goes on about how everyone in his family hates him, yet the impression I get based on how they interact with him is that they are quite fond of him.

As the novel progressed, I felt more and more alienated from Tai and Darien. Their relationship felt as stiff as their passion, which usually ended in just…”and then we made love”. I’m not calling for dirty details, but the not-sexy-in-the-slightest nonchalance doused any burning embers for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t always relate to the main characters of a story, but usually I can latch onto a particular side character that just sort of resonates with me (a friend perhaps or even the baddie in a few instances). This was not the case. Tai mentions Ashley and the other wives she speaks with, but we rarely get to be a part of the conversation. It was almost like parts were missing from the story. The climax included. When I finished, I kept thinking that’s it? Where’s the rest? Again, I’ve loved novels that end similarly. What’s the difference? I was emotionally invested in the characters and felt this overwhelming drive to get the next book in the series ASAP!

Other minor peeves:
The writing was sloppy: grating echoes (nodding or smiling in particular) and unnecessary directional cues (Example: “she nodded at me” when he was the only person she could have “nodded at”) that made scenes feel stiff and awkward. The reader is TOLD that Tai and Darien feel a certain way or do things for certain reasons, and I can’t stand this in writing. Give me impressions and let me paint the picture.
“Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader – not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.” – E.L. Doctorow
This novel just didn’t do that for me.

Sure does leave room for another book :) Looking forward to that one :)

When I first saw this cover I wasn't expecting a YA book :) But it was - but that's ok - because it was a really good story.

Tia was chosen to be a human sacrifice for the Dragon Lord who protected all the people on her small island where she lived with her mom.

Tia didn't want to be sacrificed - but she knew that the people were depending on her.

Darien Ocina - the 7th son of the Dragon Lord himself was soon to turn 18 years old and become a man - in this big event, he has chosen Tia to be his wife - while the town (and herself) thinks she will be sacrificed - to be eaten by the dragon, the real truth comes out when he turns himself from a dragon into a human and sweeps her off to his home where they will be husband and wife for many many MANY years.

When Tia discovered she wasn't going to be eaten, but to become a wife who will breed his children, she didn't take kindly to Darien's advances. True Darien had been falling Tia since she was a child, and had fallen in love with her over the many years until they both were of age - She didn't feel the same

The book was pretty good - it was a little fast paced though . Seemed a little choppy. One event talked about something that was going to happen, next chapter, now that it's happened, it's time for the next thing - we didn't get a lot of details. I would have liked to have known more about the attack from the Inero dragons - I would have liked to have known a little more about the "meetings" that took place, maybe learn a little more about the dragon Politics that Darien is now facing -

The love story was really sweet - I love reading about how Tia slowly started to have feelings for Darien even though she tried hard not to. She couldn't tell him she loved him because she afraid.
The way Darien loved Tia was really something else. I wish there were real guys out there that loved like that outside of a book :) He is really kind, and sensitive, and really seems to genuinely care about Tia more than anything else in his life.

Darien has a lot to deal with outside of trying to get Tia to feel comfortable around him. And I can imagine the next book is going to be a LOT harder - especially with the heiarpeiahgeraoih (yes I typed that the right way, I'm not going to give away anything in this review) coming up :)

I'm sure the story will get better and better as the next books progress - I'm looking forward to seeing more the the dragon Lord and his family - because that's the ONE THING that matters the most to the Oceina's :)

Dragons are fascinating creatures of myth that eat virgin sacrifices and breath fire. Well, not really in Oceina. In this wonderful world of fantasy, Dragons are revered in religon sacred and a direct line to God. Priests and Priestesses are the only ones who can communicate with them. This tale opens to an Ociena Dragon asking the priests for a virgin sacrifice. The dragon is very particular and wants only Kai, a regular girl who is her mother's only child. Kai doesn't want to leave her mother and doesn't think it is quite the honor when the Priests come to her home and tell her she has been requested. Little does she know that through the ceremonial vows she has been wed to a shapeshifter that is a water dragon. Darien, the Ociena dragon lord, has been loving Kai from afar for 6 years. Kai has always seen the dragon flying over her but never knew he was really human part of the time. She is placed on the island as a sacrifice and passes out when Darien uses his magic to calm her fears. When she comes to she finds her handsome husband who tells her of their marriage. Kai decides she doesn't want to die a virgin and doesn't realize Darien is the dragon she fears so they consumate the marriage.

Kai wakes up in Darien's family home in their bed. Kai is angry and outraged at being decieved and marriaged without any control over her own life. Darien is attentive, kind, and sexy. He continues to give her anything she wants in hopes that she will love him back. Kai is certainly attracted to him but doesn't want to be told what to do. Darien, as a dragon, also has powerful magic that will now transform Kai into a dragon mate so that they can produce heirs. Although Kai knows she cannot go back home without exposing the dragons secret, she is completely appalled by the lack of control she has over the situation. The romance between Kai and Darien is hot and sweet. I love the fact that Darien is so in love with Kai and will do anything to make her happy.

Darien's family is also the leaders of the Ociena dragons. Darien's father, Orion is the leader. Darien feels like his family blames him for the loss of their mother who died in childbirth. However, there are dangerous plots and intrigue to get the power of Darien's family. Darien will have to step up and become more involved in politics than he would like. He will need all the support he can get.

This is such a well written unique plot that I highly recommend the book especially for the price. The story immediately engages the reader and I didn't want to put it down.

I have always had a fascination with dragons, so while scoping through the Barnes and Noble store (on my Nook) I found this beauty and decided to pick it up. I ignored all the other reviews because I wanted to form my own opinion rather than not picking it up because someone else decided to say it was horrible. Besides the synopsis was kinda irresistible... I loved the story line already!

The Legend of Oceina Dragon is about a girl, named Tai, who is to be sacrificed to the great Dragon Lord- Oceina. She has been chosen from all the girls on Little Ociena Island to be sacrificed. First of all what the heck! I am so glad these people are nonchalant about just letting one of their girls be eaten by a fricken dragon! Which, of course, turns out to be not so true.

The world that J.F. Jenkins has written is a very thought out world. There are four dragon species: The Oceina (Water), the Aero (Air), the Inero (Fire), and the Terran (Land). All these dragons are the leader's, the lords of the land. I found this concept to be quite cool. There are also rules that all humans must follow, especially the girls. Which I found quite interesting, some of the rules were understandable yet, some of the rules were very far fetched. Which I believe added depth in the book.

Tai is a good girl. She doesn't break any laws, even though there is one that she wishes she could break. I honestly had a hate/love relationship with this character. At many parts of the book I must say that Tai was complete bitch. She was so mean to Darien. I get it, she was uprooted from her home but he is just so sweet, and cute how can you be so cruel!!

Darien was amazing he was gentle, sweet, and definitely good looking. All he wanted was love and a wife. He just wanted to have a family, but Tai just had to be difficult! I enjoyed some of their banters and I loved delving into his world more.

So what did I not like about this book? Well there was a lot of politics, and we all know just how much I love that. I know that the government was needed but it honestly just ticked me off more in the end. Another thing I wish for is the depth of the character development. I didn't really connect to any of the character's and I would have loved to have gotten a deeper background story.

Overall this book was really good. You can go out and buy it if you want, I would personally borrow from a friend and then buy it!

Read on my homies!

I'm sorry I regret buying this book. Ive never been so utterly disappointed by a book before. I was excited to read this. Ever since reading Firelight Ive grown a new found interest in dragons. Which leads me to discuss the things I did some what like about this book.
1. I liked the new take on dragons. They are shape shifters and Messengers from god. The were send to Earth to protect the people. Every 8 years a sacrifice is made to the dragon, a young pure woman. Everyone thinks that the dragon eats the girl but he really doesn't, he marries the girl.
2. I liked the interesting way babies are born. They are in the belly for a lot less time then human babies. When they are born they are pushed out as a large eggs. As eggs they incubate for the remainder of the time of a human pregnancy. Then they hatch. I liked that a lot Ive never read any thing like that. Its original.
And that is where my like for this book ends.
I wasn't able to get close to the characters-At All. Tai is immature and she just made me mad at times. I mean who sleeps with a guy THAT YOU JUST MEET LIKE 3 SECONDS BEFORE???? He didn't even initiate it and the next day she yells at him for making her have sex!! (there is no description it just tells you it happened) She then spends the next few weeks bickering at him and hating him. They fight like children. About three quarters of the way through they suddenly are madly in love! I was like wait...did I miss something? Darien is sweet and I liked him much more when he was alone because the relationship between the two mains was completely frustrating. In the end I found both main characters and all the secondary characters flat.
It didn't make sense that the author switched the genre of the story. It starts out in high fantasy. She lives on an island. The dragon religion is what rules the lands. Dragons are always flying over. The sacrifices that are held seem a bit barbaric until you know the truth. Then once she moves with the dragon lord it becomes more urban or contemporary fantasy. They live in a huge house in a big city. They go to high school, at school there is no talk of dragons. It was really confusing for me. It had a lot of loopholes that left me feeling mad and disappointed. I bought this book off of Barnes and Noble because of the good reviews I seen on the page. I am sorry to the author for writing such a bad review and I hope that with each book the story and the writing get better.

My Review:
My persoanl enjoyment rating-4
Overall- 3.5

I like stories where the character or characters are thrown into and stuck in a predicament they otherwise may not have chosen for themselves. Case in point, Tai being the sacrifice to the Dragon Lord to wed and not die. Hmmm, curious? I know I was.

What I loved is meeting Tai and Darien at this point in their lives. It seems they are written as the pre-Hero/ Heroine. Both are young and still maturing- Tia with her abrupt new life and Darien with his new position among his dragon kind. I find it sweet to begin at this point. Almost like the pre-Curran of his world (Kate Daniels reference).
Also, I love the ending. For those who have read it and will I know I shouldn't because the couple is still young but overall I love these kinds of endings. I just wish the mental telepathy connection didn't scare Tai as much in the get go.

What I liked is the fantasy/paranormal world. I think more needs to be clarified but the world intrigues me so. The father is too vague which I understand for the plot build-up but for us readers it would have been a great time to build upon this dragon world.

What I didn't like so much was the execution. Some parts changed rather quickly. One moment here and the next chapter there. Smoother transitions- chapter to chapter.

My Favorite scene which I loved reading was Tai and Darien dancing in the rain storm. Wow. That would make a fantastic date. Yes, this is my Swoon Moment!!

The story is meant for YA and the voice is clearly YA. I would recommend this title to the YA population. It's sweet for YA readers but not enough bang for the ones that like their YA borderline Adult. Note there is sex in this title but there is no detail just mentions of. Honestly, I would allow my teenage sister of 17 years to read this and probably even a little younger.

All in all, J.F. Jenkins created a world straight out of fantasy. Innocent maidens and gorgeous dragons. We have yet to meet the slayers but I have a feeling it's on the horizon. Legend of the Oceina Dragon is a pleasant start to a series with a few kinks but worth a read. I will be keeping up with Tai and Dariens's future journey. I'm especially curious to learn more of the ending.

Chosen as the sacrificial virgin, Tai, though terrified, accepts her death sentence in order that others living in the small island paradise may continue to prosper, protected by the winged, water dragons known as Oceina Dragons.

Darien is a young Ociena dragon with exceptionally strong magic that is able to effortlessly shape shift into an attractive human male. Soon he will be celebrating his eighteenth birthday. For years he has watched Tai grow into a beautiful, kind, and intelligent young woman. On his birthday, they are to be married.

Oceina Dragons protect the small island and other human settlements in their territory. In return for their protection, a young female virgin is selected periodically as a sacrifice. The dragons are a secretive society and actually the so-called sacrifices they demand are how they go about procuring nubile young women as wives for their young men. Without the young women, dragon-kind would become extinct as only males are ever hatched.

This is the first book in a planed series but in many ways, as I read, I felt as though I was in the middle of the series rather than at the beginning. The author left herself plenty of wiggle room for additional novels, fortunately for those of us captivated by this world. I noticed a few odd turns of phrase and a couple of places I became confused as to what was actually meant, but honestly, those small moments still could not lessen my enjoyment of this tale. A fantastical world is being created and I believe, without a doubt, this world will become well-loved by fans everywhere.

My thoughts

Cover: I'm loving it. Yes it is not published by a big publisher and maye the cover is cover abusted out there, but this is exactly how I pictured Tai and Darien. On of my new beloved fictional couples

Book: I signed up for the tour of book two after i found i could read book 1. I took a leap of faith.I could have hated these books.Happy to have read it.

Once upon a time the Great Lord created dragons to protect mankind. 4 types of dragons. 4 different elements

We see Tai, a young lady, around 18 years of age living on a small island in Oceina territory.Wondering why dragons are following her since the age of 13 ish or at least she thinks they are following her in daily routine of life. Her mom tells her that she's been chosen as a sacrifice to the grear oceina dragon. Sacrifices are not uncommon. But is this really a sacrifice?

The writing was easy to follow and not too simplistic like a certain book i read this year. The world building was good but got confused a bit. It is a modern world. They have cell phones but the writing gave me old world, Medieval feel.

It has a dual narration . Tai and Darien POV. But this darien's story.

Darien around the same age as Tai in years. Not human years. He's a dragon, the youngest son of the Oceina lord and touched. What do you think that is?? Water is his element. The element of Oceina. Very kind but the oddball in the family. Members of the family despise him for what he's done. It was not his fault. His birth

Tai was not a kick butting girl. Just a normal girl in and a wall flower in her eyes and can't seem to understand why Darien sees in her.I quite liked her bit bitchy towards Darien but she falls for Darien in the end.

The romance was great. It was real.I was happy they supported each other in the end. It was more adult than YA . New adult.

Felt the loss , the pain of losing a loved one. Politically involved.Enemy caused. A neighboring tribe, a different species. The Inero, FIRE. But are they the real enemy

I quite liked it. Love shifters, love dragons, LOVE dragon shifters.I immediately began reading book two

Source: Received from author courtesy of the Teen Book Scene. Many thanks goes to J.F. Jenkins and Teen Book Scene for sending me a copy of this book for review. I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

My rating: 3.5/5

Darien and Tai are from two different worlds. Darien is a dragon, and Tai, well, she's going to be the latest sacrifice to the Dragon Lord. Tai accepts her duty with dignity, however she wishes she had time to live life a little before the sacrifice. Darien's looking at the sacrifice as his dream come true, because he will be wedded to the one woman he believes is the one. With such different outlooks, friction sets in immediately, however something larger is at play, and Darien and Tai will have to figure out their relationship as they defend themselves from a rival dragon clan.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, but found things were a little rushed between Darien and Tai. They do certain things for all the wrong reasons, though in hindsight, they realize their mistakes and begin to work toward figuring out their new destiny, at each other's side. Darien is a lovable guy, and he is completely head over heels, dedicated to Tai. She doesn't realize or believe that, and she in turn is a headstrong stubborn individual. When they interact, fireworks erupt.
Though the middle seemed to have less plot movement and tension, once we get into the meat of the story, it picks back up and catapults the reader headlong with Darien and Tai as they discover and explore their feelings for each other. With the added threat from the rival dragon clan, tension is kept high as the book comes to a close. It is left open-ended with trouble brewing on the horizon, as Darien learns more about his role in the upcoming battle.
All in all, a riveting read, that will keep readers entertained. Dragons abound, and learning about the different clans was interesting. Seeing how Darien and Tai interact was fascinating as well. Though the middle is set at a sower pace, the ending makes up for it completely. With an open-ending, readers will be left wanting to know what is going to happen next. I certainly want to know more.

Overall, this was a pretty good story. It is original in the fact that it's about dragons who can shift into human form. These dragons are only born male, so they choose a female human to marry from an island the dragons protect. The people of the island know about the dragon's existence, but the fact that the dragons can take on a human form is kept secret. When the dragon turns 18 and chooses a wife from the island, everyone on the island believes that the chosen girl is a sacrifice. She is never seen again and believed to be dead.

When Tai is chosen to be the sacrifice, she thinks she is going to die. Not until she is taken to the island the dragons live on, and goes through the ceremony, does she find out that she has been chosen to be a wife to Darien.

Tai is not a happy camper, which is understandable considering everyone she knows thinks she's dead and she will never see them again. I really liked the character of Darien though, and felt that Tai was too cold to him. Darien can't help the customs of his people. Before he chose Tai to be his wife, he had watched her for years from afar and fell in love with her. He is head over heels for her and she is just cruel to him.

There was a little too much of dragon politics in this book for my taste. Darien has to leave Tai a couple of different times during the book to attend meetings that were far away. I thought that these times were a little boring. I wanted to see more of them together so they could sort things out. Personally, I didn't feel any spark between these two at all during the book, and that is an aspect that is really important to me. I love the cover of the book, and the storyline really does have potential. I think that having less dragon politics and more sexual tension would move this book to a 4 star review from me.

THOUGHTS/OPINION:
This book had a lot of potential and I was really shocked that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I found the heroine a little no scratch that really immature. She was offered as a sacrifice to the Dragons which she did props to her. She misses her mom I get that but the night of the sacrifice she sees a really HAWT guy and has sex. Then blames him repeatedly over and over that she is just a glorified breeding tool. She won’t listen to him and she doesn’t believe what he says even though she went into it willingly. I get she is young and so is the hero but, she is wish washy to me. One moment she comments on how nice he was the next she is screaming at him for screwing her when she didn’t need him.

It was a weird combo for me and not something I enjoyed. Now please keep in mind that I am not a strong Y/A reader and it takes A LOT for me to enjoy a y/a book b/c the hero or heroine repeatedly get immature or selfish on me and that annoys the crap out of me. Other than the heroine who couldn’t connect with I found the story to be very entertaining. I love the dragon aspect and the world building that was done with this plot. I would love to read more about this world and would probably enjoy reading about the brothers and their mates or even the mother and father story.

The diary part was the best for me I have to admit that I really enjoyed those scenes and watching Darien come to grips with some heavy information. All in all it wasn’t my favorite but that was simply due to the heroine and not connecting. Where she didn’t connect with me she might with others so I would still recommend this book especially if you enjoy reading Y/A books.

Legend of the Oceina Dragon is the first book in Ms Jenkins’ Dragons Saga. I love the fantasy world that Ms Jenkins has created for this series. She did a wonderful job of creating a dragon mythology that intertwines with the human world. There are 4 dragon types: Oceina (water), Inero (fire), Terran (earth), & Aero (wind). Each dragon type has its own strengths and weaknesses along with its own way of keeping their “secret”. You see, all dragons are born male and so they are able to change into human form and each must find a human woman to marry.

This book follows the story of Darien and Tai’s relationship as they start out their marriage. I appreciated that the relationship has depth. Tai isn’t a girl who simply swoons over the gorgeous Darien and immediately falls in love. She was raised by a single mother (her father left when she was young) and she was never very social. Although she is grateful to be alive and not eaten by the dragon, she really struggles with finding herself in a marriage relationship far from home and isolated from her mother.

While there isn’t a lot of character development with many of the secondary characters, I felt the main characters and the mythology were very well developed. I was drawn into the story right from the start and was kept engaged throughout the book. I really enjoyed learning about the dragons along with the developing relationship between Darien and Tai. When I finished the book, I immediately went in search of the next book. I was so pleased to find that there are four more books already out and additional free material on the author’s website. I highly recommend this series and eagerly await the conclusion.

Dragons oh my! I've never had the desire to read a book about Dragons. And I never thought I would enjoy it as well. J.F. Jenkins' The Dragon Saga breaks the mold of all the stereotypes I created in my head about Dragon books - just goes to show you that you really can never judge a book by its cover.

The Legend of the Oceina Dragon is a wonderful tale about the humanity of dragons with a splash of old world magic - they are not just beasts who breath fire. Darien is a dragon while Tai is not, but the moment Darien saw Tai he fell in love with her. He knew she was "the one". Tai is thrust into Darien's world without a choice. To be blunt Tai does not want to be in Darien's world, but over time this changes. Tai sees firsthand the magical and even happy world that Darien lives in with his Dragon family. That is until trouble threatens to tear them and their world apart.

While the novel is told between the two main characters, Darien and Tai, this is really Darien's story. Darien is just like any normal teenager in that he learns about love, friendship, and at times just wants to fit in. But Darien has a destiny that will not allow him to be just a normal teen 'dragon lord'. J.F. Jenkins use of the paranormal creates a magical tale of human quality. While at times the plot was a bit rushed and I would have loved to learn more about our characters, J.F. Jenkins' characters were real, despite their paranormal attributes.

I for one cannot wait to read what happens next in the world of the Dragons! A must read for any paranormal fan.
