Otherworld Stories #10.1 -The List

Evolve 2: Vampire Stories of the Future Undead

Rate this book
From this century to the next, vampires of the future will evolve!

Whatever apocalyptic events might lie ahead for our species, vampires—the eternal predators—will still be with us. How will the future unfold for both species? Are the undead capable of controlling their urges? Can we resist the desire to stake them through the heart? Will we be the best of friends, or will our sinfully-seductive new neighbors literally have us over for dinner?

In this shocking, sometimes amusing, always thought-provoking anthology, 22 of the world’s finest horror and dark fantasy writers reveal the future as they imagine it, moving from this century to the next. Whether vampires help or hinder us, affect or infect us, editor Nancy Kilpatrick is sure you will agree: we definitely have not seen the last of the undead!

Anthology of 22 short stories about possible futures of the undead.

I got this for the Kelley Armstrong Otherworld story 10.1 The List, but scanned a few pages of the rest and read what interested me. Here’s what I came up with.

The problem with a lot of anthology short stories is that then don’t explain enough at the beginning to let you get a grasp on what the story is so you get so frustrated trying to figure out the story you lose track of what’s going on and lose interest.

Interesting that there’s only a few authors that are well-known or whose stories are connected to another series. Probably to attract readers to read the rest lesser known authors who mainly seem to write just for anthologies.

1) Pre-Apocalypse
A) The List. Kelly Armstrong. Otherworld 10.1. 4 stars. Short vignette about Zoe Takano, a vampire. Reviewed also separately.
B) Nosangreal. Ivan Dorin. 2 stars. Very strange philosophical story about contagious eternal youth.
C) A Puddle of Blood. Silvia Moreno-Garcia. 3 stars. A vampire on the run hides out in Mexico where she finds a helpful friend. This was also in the 1st Evolve anthology.
D) V-Link. Eileen Bell. 2 stars. Medical science experiment linking patients with weird side effects.
E) Six Underground. Michael Lorenson. 4 stars. An underground city has some legal problems with their vampire minority. Funny ending.
F) Outwitted. Sandra Wickham. 3 stars. Short lesson on how humans are not as intelligent as they think. Wisdom and foresight win over technology.
G) Toothless. Peter Sellers. 1 star. Cop looking into a case of vampires being killed for their teeth. Didn’t finish
H) Symbiosis. David Beynon. 2 stars. Depressingly honest conversation about the slow demise of vampires.

2) Post-Apocalypse. (These kind of stories are not really my thing so I probably won’t like them.)
A) Forest-Bathing. Heather Clitheroe. 1 star. Too depressing to read beyond the first few pages. Something about a worldwide plague.
B) The Deal. Erika Holt. 2 stars. Vampire infected people are being contained for experimentation. Two friends are on the road after one rescued the other.
C) Homo Sanguinus. Ryan T McFadden. 3 stars. Some kind of WMD event created vampires but they are controlled until an old woman shows them the truth.
D) Out with the Old. William Meikle. 2 stars. Scanned instead of read. Something about the world falling apart and a vampire taking control of a town of humans.
E) Chelsea Morning. David Tocher. 2 stars. Another devastated world controlled by vampires trying to capture the few remaining humans Ooey, gooey, yucky type of insectoid vampires.
F) Blood That Burns So Bright. Jason S Ridler. 2 stars. Something about a fighting match between a human and a vampire. Didn’t read it mainly because I don’t like boxing.
G) Survival of the Fittest. Leanne Tremblay. 4 stars. The leader of a Sapiens Outreach Program run by a group of vampire scientists discovers a rare colony of humans.
H) The Faith of the Burning Glass. Steve Vernon. 1 star. A lone vampire wanders a world turned into a nuclear waste land. Not much to this odd story.

3) New World Order.
A) Soulglobe. John Shirley. 4 stars. Corporate man has come up with a way of combining art and death, but it’s not truly altruistic. Melancholy, but interesting.
B) Red Planet. Bev Vincent. 2 stars. First manned colonizing mission to Mars unexpectedly includes a vampire.
C) Beacon Among the Stars. Anne Mok. 2 stars. Astronaut vampires colonizing and exploring.
D) The Big Empty. Thomas S Roche. 2 stars. Not sure what this is about. Just scanned it. I think there’s a group of 3 different beings/generations/ survivors on a mission into a mostly abandoned facility that encounter a soul eating vampire type group.
E) Beyond the Sun. Tanith Lee. 2 stars. Vampires in space (again). This one brings along her own blood donors on her jobs starting suns.
F) The Slowing of the World. Sandra Kasturi. 2 stars. The long lived vampires are behind the dinosaurs disappearing, climate change, etc. as they conform the world to their needs.

An interesting collection of imaginative vampires. 2.5 stars

PRE-APOCALYPSE ***
The List by Kelley Armstrong * * *
Zoe & a friend attend a professor's lecture on vampirism. Better than the last Zoe story I read from Armstrong (which was Zen and the Art of Vampirism). However, since Zoe is a current character that Armstrong writes about, I fail to see how she can be considered a future vampire...

Nosangreal by Ivan Dorin * * *
A vampire & his opposite in a park. Somewhat allegorical.

A Puddle of Blood by Silvia Moreno-Garcia * * *
A street rat meets a strange, Mexican, bird-like vampire.

V-Link by Eileen Bell * * *
A strange built-in internet experiment turns the patients into mentally connected vampires.

Six Underground by Michael Lorenson * * *
In an underground city, a group of jurors debate a verdict for young men who murdered a possible vampire.

Outwitted by Sandra Wickham * * * *
How is this one not post-apocalyptic?? It seems posed between a 1st & 2nd apocalypse. One of the few remaining vampires is caught for research & interrogation. I would be interested in continuing this story.

Toothless by Peter Sellers * *
Isn't a burn up ozone apocalyptic?? Odd - but interesting source for sun screen...

Symbiosis by David Beynon * * *
Ok, people! An apocalypse can be defined as a great catastrophe. Does a worldwide pandemic that changes "everything for everyone," & even leaves vampires in a state of starvation not count?? I wonder what the next set of post-apocalyptic stories will be like if this did not qualify...

POST-APOCALYPSE**•
Forest Bathing by Heather Clitheroe * * *
Not to belabor the point, but if you are in the midst of a pandemic (holed up in an embassy awaiting rescue), isn't that actually mid-apocalypse? Who categorized these??

The Deal by Erika Holt * * *
Best friends have to deal with a difficult situation when one of them is infected.

Homo Sanguinus by Ryan T. McFadden * * *
A vampire has been made to feel afraid of the dark & the mob, etc. Can it last?

Out With the Old by William Meikle * *
A dying colony meets a dubious sort of savior.

Chelsea Mourning by David Tocher *
Dark coping in a dark world.

Blood That Burns So Bright by Jason S. Ridler * *
A human fighter in a vampire fight circuit.

Survival of the Fittest by Leanne Tremblay * * *
A vampire scientist discovers which race is fittest.

The Faith of Burning Glass by Steve Vernon * * *
A thirsty vampire searches for his next sip.

NEW WORLD ORDER**•
Soulglobe by John Shirley * * *
Space vampires in a ballet of death graveyard.

Red Planet by Bev Vincent * * * *
A man wakes from cryo-sleep to discover that he has become a vampire...

Beacons Among the Stars by Anne Mok * *
A vampire searches the stars for his long lost companion.

The Big Empty by Thomas Roche *
A search for seeds becomes more dangerous than expected.

Beyond the Sun by Tanith Lee * * *
A vampire reboots suns & mourns her lost love.

The Slowing of the World by Sandra Kasturi * *
Hmmm... Asexual vampires & climate change. Okay...

Evolve 2: Vampire Stories of the Future Undead contains 22 short stories written by some of the greatest paranormal authors out there, including Tanith Lee, Kelley Armstrong, John Shirley, Thomas Roche, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Heather Clitheroe and more. Like the first Evolve, this collection of stories looks forward instead of back, it gives readers a new insight into the world of vampires, a fresh and unique take on our beloved blood drinkers. Unlike the first edition, this one is split up into three sections – pre-apocalypse, post-apocalypse and new world order. Due to my creepy obsession with vampires and apocalypses, I really loved seeing that.

Like the first edition, Evolve 2 contains a wide variety of tales, no story is like the one before it, every author has their own voice and it’s really shown off here. I would go from reading something mysterious or comedic, to something dark and terrifying.

As for the stories themselves, I was highly impressed with many of the authors in this book, such as Ivan Dorin, who penned the incredibly deep and intellectual story “Nosangreal.” I also enjoyed Michael Lorenson’s “Six Underground,” which took vampires to a futuristic courthouse of all places. The world she created was one that I would LOVE to see more of. The entire world living in an underground labyrinth – who wouldn’t want more of that? I also loved William Meikle’s “Out With the Old” which was a glorious classic vampire horror story set in post-apocalyptic world. Loved it! And I I’ll stop now before I gush over every wonderful story I read.

However, it wasn’t all good, there were a few duds thrown in there. Some of the stories were surprisingly bland and unoriginal and I had to force myself through them. Fortunately those stories were limited, and the majority of the book was incredible.

Whatever is ahead for humanity, how will vampires react? Will they continue to suck our blood, or will we learn to work together? This anthology attempts to give the answer.

In present-day Mexico, a street kid meets a female vampire and gives her some of his blood. She is on the run, because her kind is being hunted by the Mexican government, drug gangs and nearly everyone else. The night before liftoff, a male astronaut has a romantic encounter that ends with him being bitten by a vampire. What do you think will happen to the first manned mission to Mars?

A very high-class mausoleum, which involves preserving the dead and letting them float around inside a hollowed-out asteroid, allowing families to visit, is not what it seems. A jury has to decide if a young woman, who was beaten to death, was, or was not, a vampire at the time. A woman is truned into a vampire, and is forced to leave her husband and daughter; the temptation is just too strong. Decades later, the hunting of vampires has become established and part of society. In a world where the ozone layer has pretty much disappeared, blisters will form on unprotected skin within a few minutes. People are ripping vampire fangs right out of their mouths, because, when ground up and mixed with blood, it supposedly makes the ultimate sun-block.

This is an excellent group of stories. They are original stories that explore all parts of the vampire world. Individually, they are well-written, and, collectively, this is very much worth reading (even for those who are not vampire fans).

When I heard that there was going to be an Evolve 2 I was a happy camper. I waited patiently so that I could pick up my signed copy from Nancy Kilpatrick, the editor of the anthology, at FanExpo2011. It took me a while to get to it, tho I jumped it to the top of my to-be-read pile - I'm a slow reader.

I wasn't a slow reader when I got my hands on it.

I devoured it as quickly as I could!

Each vampire story in this anthology is inventive and highly imaginative, unlike so many other vampire stories I read nowadays. Some were very much on the horror side of the coin. These I LOVED. Some were on the sci-fi end of the coin. Those I found interesting, but raised some questions about the science of certain situations.

Regardless, I loved this anthology and hope that there will be an Evolve 3!

The List by Kelley Armstrong: The List picks up 1 year after the events from the first Evolve anthology, where Eve and her new protege, Brittany the vampire slayer meet. In this short, Eve sees a list of vampires living in Toronto and decides to take her protege to his visiting lecture. It was an okay short. Not very exciting with little character development.

I really enjoyed the stories in this anthology. So many different styles and takes on the vampire legend. Some excellent cringe moments, which is what I'm looking for in a vampire story. I'll be interested to see if a third volume is published.

Extremely short story in which Zoe and the young ”vampire hunter” she met previously have become friends. They investigate a professor who claims to have a list of all the vampires in Zoe's territory. It was VERY short but I love Zoe so I liked it.

The overall intent of this short story is humour. Not a lot of point to it, but gives a bit more of a glimpse into Zoe's life.
