Technology and air superiority equals success in modern warfare. But even during the War in Afghanistan, satellite recon and smart bombs cannot replace soldiers on the ground. When a SEAL team SeaHawk helicopter goes down in the icy mountains of Kandahar, Lieutenant Lester Donovan must make a difficult follow orders or go ""off mission"" and save his fellow soldiers. With Taliban terrorists at every turn, neither decision will be easy. He'll need his instincts and some high-tech weaponry to get off of the hillside and back to base alive!
I liked the book it really talked about the war in Afginastan and how Lieutenant Donovan and his crew of soldiers sent to take a Taliban leader back to America for questioning
War is not pretty no matter how you describe it. This book is part of our 7th. and 8th. grade library collection. This is #8 in the Bloodlines series that focuses on the War in Afghanistan. Other books in the series focus on other wars in our nation's history. This novel from our historical fiction section has been illustrated in a manner similar to a graphic novel. It also includes fact based information and photographs describing the gear our soldiers wear in battle. There are photographs and descriptions of a Seahawk helicoptor and a UAV that was involved in the efforts of Lieutenant Commander Donovan and his men to rescue his men who had been taken captive. This was an interesting read for me as an adult. I think it will really appeal to my junior high students who spend a lot of time reading nonfiction in our war section of the library.
1/16/13 I started reading this book on monday and I am almost finished with it now. it is about two seals that went down in a helicopter and the talaban kidnapped two of their soilders. they were then on their own and had to go find them. once they figured out where they were it was in a huge underground village with alot of tunnels. they had to kill all the talaban to get them out and they almost got killed while doing it. overall it was a really good book and I think it was easy to follow along with. I woish I would have read more of these books because it is short and easy to understand, also I liked how they stuck to the story the whole time and didnt do flashbacks or skip around like some other books. I would deffinatly read more of these books if I had to choose.
Read this to see who to recommend it to at the library. Younger teens who can handle blood and violence, older teens who like graphic novels. I appreciate the theme "leave no man behind" but don't like linse such as "Taliban terrorists dropped like marionettes with clipped strings and hit the deck in clumps of flesh."
To all those who have served in the military, thank you for defending my freedom. God bless.
Control Under Fire is a military book. It is realistic fiction. It is part of a series. The main character Lester Donovan he is a very young and courageous U.S. soldier that has to fight against the TALIBAN army and fight in Afghanistan his lifestyle sounds pretty cool he also formed a very strong bond with another soldier and enjoyed being in the force. If you like action filled books with courageous characters, this is the book for you.
Another quick book (took one hour to read) that will be attractive to boys. I did not find it to be great literature, but I think it will get lost of check outs. Factual information about the war in Afghanistan interspersed throughout, as well as a number of comic-like illustrations, add to its appeal. Appropriate for elementary (not too graphic).
This book is full of action. If you like the army and war then read this book and the rest of the series. In this book and the other ones you will find information about the guns, equipment, and vehicles used in the time period it was used. Also it is about one family history in war.
