It’s been four months since Alex gave everything to save Jessica. Life should be perfect; she has Alex, she’s been freed of the nightmares, and most of all- she’s alive. But some things have changed, some things haven’t. That’s the problem. Alex still hasn’t asked “the question”. Jessica can’t see the reason why and it’s tearing her apart. He’s keeping something from her. Alex isn’t the only one who has changed though. Something is different about Jessica but she doesn’t understand what’s happened. She just knows something’s wrong, that she feels different than she used to, on a skin deep level. And it may keep her and Alex apart. Forever. But while Alex and Jessica struggle to stay together, Cole is not about to be forgotten. There are a few things he didn’t tell Jessica, about his past and her future. There are reasons why he came after her, reasons that are tied to his history that is darker than she could have ever realized.

Or as I like to call it, "For the Sake of Angst". Seriously, 85% of this book was angst from either Jessica, Alex, or Cole. Just a fair warning: there will be spoilers in this review. And some swearing.
So, this book starts off some time after the last one left off. Jessica and Alex's lame relationship is in some weird limbo state where it's good and bad at the same time. It's good because "OMG we're together and he's so hawt eeeee" and bad because "OMG why won't he fucking marry me does he not love me whyyy? *sobangst*" The problem that I had with Jessica in this book was that she was kind of bitchy. Like I mentioned, her biggest source of angst is the fact that Alex won't propose to her, which makes her feel just a tad insecure (understatement of the century). Now, the thing is, Alex has a pretty good reason for not wanting to marry her. At the end of the last book, he sacrificed himself to save Jessica and instead of dying he came back as an angel, but there's no guarantee that he'll be with her forever. Alex knows that there's a chance that the angels will take him away from her forever and so he doesn't want to marry her because he doesn't want to leave her alone and unhappy without a husband. But Jessica doesn't seem to understand that and is basically just dead set on getting married no matter what. She even gives Alex shit about it, even after he explains his perfectly good reason. So that causes Alex some angst, along with the fact that he's an angel and stuff and not human anymore. We sometimes shift to his perspective, but it's kind of pointless because all he does is talk about how he wants to make Jessica happy. Uh, we know that already, dude.
Oh, Cole's back too. I have to admit, I like Cole in the same way I like all really creepy characters. I find him entertaining. It's just too bad that Keary Taylor kind of neuters his character toward the end when he tries to redeem himself and she tries to beat it into your head that he's starting to become good. You can't fool me, I know he's a no-good bastard of a character, don't even try that crap.
Really, not a whole lot happened in this book. It's odd; it's one of those books where a lot happens but nothing really important happens. Mostly it's just a lot of stuff happens that I couldn't bring myself to care about. New characters are introduced but none of them are terribly interesting. This book is all about Jessica and Alex's angsty, boring, and badly written relationship and there just happen to be angels sprinkled in every now and then to remind you that this is a paranormal romance series.
I opted to go ahead and read this second book in the series, hoping that some of the issues I had with the first book would be rectified. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, and if anything, this second installment just compounded my earlier dislikes.
Basic premise: continuation of the first book. Alex is now an angel. Jessica is something else, saved by Alex's sacrifice. Cole is gone... or is he...
What I liked: - Cole. He's a rather fun villain. I like that he was pretty much a creeptastic serial killer. I liked his background. I thought there was some decent background given for him. - Again, the world has promise. The execution fell flat, however.
What needed some work / what I didn't like: - Swapping first person narration is just... no. I absolutely hated it. And worse, it wasn't consistent with the first book in the series, making them mismatched style-wise. If you want to play around in multiple heads, just do it the right way and go for 3rd omni. - About half of this book is dedicated to Jessica whining that Alex won't marry her. How... trite. I found myself really disliking Jessica at times. She was whiny, petulant, and just annoying. Here she's been granted life without nightmares by this selfless, noble man, and she's too busy thinking that she doesn't have a ring on her finger to appreciate the possibly limited time they have together. - I still cannot understand the attraction these males have for Jessica. Her personality is dull, depressing, and whiny. Why do they love her??? - Like the first in the series, the plot needs some major tightening. There are multiple *scratching head* moments, various holes, and just general lack of cohesiveness. As I was reading I wondered a few times if this book even had an outline. It just kind of meandered around. Honestly, considering the simplicity of the plot, it could have / should have been concisely told in a novella. - Random characters floated in and out with no rhyme, reason, or purpose. For example, Amber (Jessica's sister) suddenly appeared. She added absolutely nothing to this story. Same with Cormack, aka Adam. - The anti-climax there at the end was pretty much useless and very disappointing. What Jessica and Cole just.... talked? Really? - Furthering the anti-climax, not to mention that Alex went OOC when he left Jessica, even to supposedly save his mom. Still doesn't match what we've seen of his character. - Still not enough on background of the world. I like these "trials" but WHY do the angels need a stand in in the first place? That makes so little sense as it's presented. I need to know why and how this world operates. Without providing the reader that, it's virtually impossible to believe in it. - Needed some serious editing. Multiple typos, repeated dialogue, overuse of phrases and descriptors, and just incorrect word use in general. For example, "ragged" and "raged" are two very different words, yet they were mistaken for each other more than once.
I'm notorious for continuing series simply because I *have to know* how they end, but I think I'm done here. I'll leave the 3rd book to others. I just don't care enough about the characters to read more.
In Forsaken, the second book of the Fall of Angels series, life is far from the perfection that Jessica’s life should be. Now free of the nightmares and dating the angel she loves, it would seem that life is as it should be. Only it isn’t. Alex refuses to marry her, now that he’s an angel. She’s certain Cole is still watching her from the shadows. And to top it all off, something very strange has happened to Jessica herself. Add in a best friend that is so insanely jealous of the relationship between Alex and Jessica, and you’ve got an amazing story premise.
The story, in and of itself, is just as original and captivating as the first book in the Fall of Angels series. Unfortunately, I’m also just as torn in loving this book as I was the first. I absolutely adore Alex, but his refusal to marry Jessica just seemed off to me. Considering his character, it just didn’t seem right.
I also ended up feeling something more for Cole in this book. The author definitely worked her magic at reminding us all that our choices never fully define who we are. That underneath bad choices, pain, anger, sorrow, hurt…there’s always something more, something beautiful, someone worth loving and capable of giving love. So thumbs up on that one!
My distraction in the second book was the same as my distraction in the first book, only I can better understand it now. I love the story. I love the characters, but it feels like the author is running in circles. A lot of repeated words, repeated phrases – sometimes worded differently, but still pretty much the same phrase. So really, it’s not the writing that bothers me, it seems, but more the need for maybe another copyeditor – just someone to say, “You’ve already said this,” or something along those lines.
I also noticed that the writing is often hard to get into initially. If you’re not familiar with Ms. Keary’s books or style, then it might take you until about a third to halfway through the book to really become engrossed. I’m not sure why exactly that is. I just found myself bored through portions of the story. It may just go back to the repeated phrases. You can only hear someone say something so many times before it becomes boring and annoying.
I just keep hoping that each Keary book I read improves a little more, and it seems that they might. I did notice that the typos weren’t quite as common in the second book as the first, so definitely some progress when compared to the first. That leaves me very hopeful for the next book in the series.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, enjoyed the author’s ability to create emotion in the story, the author’s voice and the story line. Her books are definitely enjoyable and I do recommend them. They’re not an absolute love, but I am looking forward to reading the third book in the series and can’t wait to see where the story takes me.
The premise of this series is compelling and the author adds just enough twist to keep it interesting. However, this book did not live up to its more promising aspects. 1. Editors are a necessity. Spellcheck is not the same thing. There were so many spelling and grammar errors! For example, there is a world of difference between "tinniest" and "tiniest". My sympathies to all of the readers who felt the same frustration I did. This mistake happens multiple times and irked me each one. There are many others and it can be quite distracting. 2. Random events are depicted with no lead up or transition or even purpose to the story. A great example would be the sudden appearance of a fair in Scotland- not much leading to it, no use to the story at all. Prepare yourself. 3. The constant whining about getting married and waiting to have sex. I have no problem with that decision but it just goes on and on. Neither party has any intention of leaving the other and they can't come to an agreement? This felt like the author couldn't decide what to do so just kept dragging it out. 4. The first chapter with Alex as narrator was absolutely awful and stilted. I will say no more. On the positive note, Cole is a wonderful villain. The sense of menace building at the beginning was creepy and kept me on edge. I've finished the series (I had to know what happened!) but this book fought my interest every step of the way.
Just like Branded, Forsaken pulled me back into the story and I couldn't put it down! The last sentence has given me a drive to hope time flies by faster so I can get a copy of the next book! Since I finished reading my hardcopies of Branded and Forsaken, I've also bought them as ereads and downloaded them onto my phone! That way I can take Jessica and Alex's story with me where ever I go! Keary Taylor is definitely on her way to big success and making a worldknown name for herself as an author!
After reading Branded I was anxious to see how the ending worked itself out in Forsaken. There was a lot of mystery and "what's going to happen?" involved in this book for me but the way the information was revealed wasn't paced very well.
While Branded was strictly from Jessica's point of view, Forsaken alternated between Jessica and Alex. I enjoyed getting Alex's point of view - he had a lot going on that a reader would not get from Jessica's perspective. Also, it shed some light on him as not 100% perfect like one may have thought after the first book. On the other hand, I think it might have made the drawn out "why won't he propose?" drama even worse.
To say the majority of this book is Jessica whining about how she wants Alex to propose to her and how he won't and how he says he has reasons and he wants to propose but he can't and blah blah blah is the truth. The book is filled with whining. That being said, there's still some good in the story.
Jessica realizes that there is something different about her, but can't quite figure it out. Throughout the story we see her struggle with this change and trying to figure it out. Meanwhile, we also get a taste of why Cole came after her. These two plot points were great and exciting, but, unfortunately, I had to wait more than half a book to really find out what was going on. Once this information was presented the story picked up so much - I wish it had been so exciting the whole time.
Overall, I think Forsaken is flawed in the same ways its predecessor is - mostly poor pacing (beginning too slow) and editing issues, although there were much less in this book than in Branded. Despite the annoying and drawn out whining in the book, I still enjoyed Forsaken for it's good and I will be reading the final installment in the Fall of Angels trilogy, Vindicated.
So basically, the whole book was about her throwing tantrum because she wanted a shiny, little thing and he had his reasons for not giving it to her. Jessica should sing this all the time :P
She reminded me a bit of a particular character
I must say I liked the first book better than this one. Emily was stupid, Cole was a psycho, Jessica was acting like an emo and Alex, I didn't have problem with him, to be honest.
It’s rare that I actually purchase books due to many reasons. I, often times, wait and think over the idea of spending the money to continue to series.
The Fall of Angels series was a no-brainer. After reading ‘Branded’, I immediately went online and not only picked up this book, but I bought the third book and the little 3.5 novelette. I was very pleased with this story and I knew that this book and the remainder of the series would have to be read or I would be going insane without knowing the answers to Jessica’s life and struggles.
What was different about Forsaken is that the story isn’t just told from Jessica’s perspective anymore, which at first had me a bit anxious as to how the flow would go, and if the author would be able to smoothly transition from the different perspectives and story lines. Keary Taylor did not disappoint me in the least. I actually found it quite refreshing getting into the heads of the other key players, and I found myself loving the characters even more.
I also appreciated this continuation of the story as I found it refreshing that Alex and Jessica’s relationship isn’t perfect. After the first book, and as it said on my previous review, Alex came off of as TOO perfect. Their relationship was too much of a fairytale and I wanted to see Alex’s faults. This book made their relationship feel more realistic. In addition, I’m happy that Jessica is still self reliant and doesn’t cling to Alex just because he is in her life now.
This story sucked me in from the first sentence, and I am really happy that I got to know a lot of the “why”. We are introduced to more characters, and of course more chaos that Jessica must face. Her troubles with Angels is not over in the least, and with the changes in herself and the complications with Alex, Cole, and family, it makes for an intense read. We get to learn a lot about other key players and their roles in why things are they way they are.
If you loved ‘Branded’, this will not disappoint you. And if you are like me, I highly encourage you to get the third book now because the ending will leave you wanting even more right away.
Omigod! Omigod! Soooooo good! I really think that if the next book is like the first two then this will be the first series ever to get all 5 stars since Twilight. Twilight has been the only series that all the books have gotten 5 stars. If this ends up being the next one, then Keary Taylor. I will probably have to stalk you for the rest of my life, read all your books, own them all, then try to know the most about your life then even you do. *Sigh* I think I'm already a stalker. I'm sorry Keary Taylor, but I am a worshiper now. This book was amazing. Throughout this whole book I was totally confused. Not the bad kind of confused! I was trying to figure out whose side to take when it came to the whole "Alex should propose thing." At one point I wanted Alex and Jessica to be together, but at the same time I totally saw Alex's point about not wanting to leave her a widow so young. Alex I think I like you better then Taylor Lautner.....yeah, I know shocker. I love Taylor Lautner with my heart and soul, but you? I fuckin want to....AGH! I just want you to be real! You are my new Taylor Lautner. I was so happy at the end of the book when he finally did propose. Like YAY!!!!!!!!!! Then oh my god Sal! I am so sorry you had to go through that. Cole is such a complete idiot. He's hot I must say, but he's an idiot. Why would you try to hurt such an innocent person? Because you think that she may be onto you? Well screw you! I bet that people would think she was crazy anyway. I loved Sal. She is such a pure soul. Then Amber? OMG, she totally reminds me of...well, me. Except for the part about the letting her boyfriend beat her up. If a boy beats on you once, then you just run and never look, but don't forget to give him a piece of your mind. I thought that Rodd would end up with Emily but I guess not. Rodd and Amber are still a pretty cute couple. It is cool how Jessica thinks that Rodd and Alex could be brothers if not for the skin color, but now then are going to be brothers! Brother-in-laws but that "in-laws" part doesn't really make a difference. I bet they already think of themselves as each others brothers. I LOVE THIS BOOK/SERIES! GO READ IT! Harman <3 Alex.
Something went wrong with goodreads.com on my phone's webbrowser, so I couldn't open it and write a review today morning and all day, but here it is. This book is pretty good, it really held my attention. The plot is great only I didn't...really....?...to say it lacked something would be more correct. I wanted more passion in Jessica and Alex's relationship(corny!!! :D but true) It was just about how Jessiaca wanted to marry Alex, but he "couldn't" marry her, because he's a freaking idiot. WHY? Because he knew he won't be on Earth for long, so he didn't want to marry her to save her the griefing wife's character.....even though he just could have lived for the moment and made Jessica happy. I don't know what role played Austin...he didn't do anything big but talk to Jessica and make an asshole of himself. Emily is totally stupid girl if you ask me....she actually was jelous of Jessicas relationship with Alex, because she couldn't get that kind of love.....who could have thought that people can be so stupid! What Jessica had wasn't only that happy, sappy love and beautiful angel by her side, but boyfriend who won't be her husband and will "leave/die" soon, because of the pull from the other side(? LoL) And later she decided to go and find Cole so he would be her angel, even though he didn't love her and she knew it(deeeeep down) It was interesting to know the human side of Cole's life. He actually was a bad, crazy man when he was still alive, but I don't think he deserved the death he got....from his father. I think I wanted to see more of his bad side in this book, though. He just wasn't the same Cole. He didn't put up a fight when Jessica told him to go live his miserable afterlife(?) Anyhow, the books pace is fast and it's a light read. I enjoyed reading it, even though it didn't reach my anticipations........I have to admit, sequels sometimes aren't as good as the first book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Forsaken is the sequel to Branded, written by self-published author Keary Taylor.
When I read Branded a little over a year ago, I thought it was pretty original. Jessica has had awful dreams for years where she sees the final judgment of the deceased. When she wakes up, she has the brand of the condemned on her neck. It's terrifying and painful, and she does her best to avoid sleep. Branded ends with Jessica not having to deal with the nightmares anymore, and she's no longer alone.
Forsaken fell a little short in originality. There were several instances where I thought it was just like Twilight. A few times I was lost, not remembering some of the details from the previous story. I was also quite distracted by typos.
Alex's reason for not proposing (a major source of conflict throughout the story) was ridiculous. No one knows how much time they'll have with someone. If you love them, and don't ever want to be without them, then pop the question!
I did like Forsaken, but I would have loved to see some more originality and proofing.
So Forsaken was not as good as I thought it would be, because ending of Branded being so powerful.
Jessica and Alex are living together now. Jessica has a job, but she still doesn't feel right.
Jessica and Alex fight so much and Jessica distances herself too often. She wants their relationship to work, but she doesn't help with anything herself, she just becomes depressed and mute.
Forsaken got boring about half way through. It went really slow. And the climax was confusing and cloudy and boring. While we find some great information and the end has a great cliffhanger (BE WARNED OF THE CLIFFHANGER!). I still don't find myself excited to read the next book.
This sequel did not let me down. This story picks up where the first book left off. There was a semi happy ever after vibe from the first book but this book squashed that feeling. Alex gave up everything to save Jessica. Jessica doesn't have her nightmares anymore and thinks that life can get back to normal but she soon realizes that Alex is holding back. Jessica finds that she has changed physically and can't really understand what it all means until Cole lets her in on a few things. Alex and Jessica have some things to figure out if they are going to be together.
This story grasped my attention and didn't let go. The whole idea of standing trial for others decisions was just so unique. This series has so much to offer and I am eagerly awaiting the next release.
Forsaken lived up to my expectations! I was super excited to read the second installment of the Fall of Angels series and I need to get my hands on the next book. In Forsaken everything is not what it seems. We finally get answers to Cole's past and you may even see yourself falling for him. I find some of the situations Jessica and Alex find themselves in super predictable, but I still love the book. If you like the Mortal Instruments then you would love this beautifully written series, even though I have not read the third book, but I am guessing it will be just as amazing as the other two! -Abby
I thought this was a fantastic sequel, if a little cheesy. Each of the characters received more backstory, which was great. Emily's character, for being in it as little as she is, has a depth that is not often encountered in lesser characters. Her past would make an intriguing short story. Amber's role in the story felt a little forced and unnecessary, though I imagine she will act as some sort of bridge between Jessica and her mother in Vindicated. My only other complaints arise from the grammatical and spelling errors that are still ever-present in the series. A little extra proof-reading would work wonders on the novel's ability to maintain the attention span of the reader.
I love the first book and this is still very original but really boring. You meet a new angel and I really liked that and you get deeper into both Jessica's and Alex's family life and also Alex's mind as some of it is written from his perspective. Had a cliffhanger so once the next one comes out I will probably read it.
OK, so what I liked about the first two audiobooks in this series: the author knows how to write a decent story, and the narrator was very good. What I didn't know ahead of time is that it is YA - so the mildness was a little maddening. I kept grumbling that it should've contained trigger warnings for being very vanilla with no heat whatsoever (not even a single cuss word). I became convinced it was written by a middle-aged former Mormon (makes sense now that I know it's for YA's... very sheltered and innocent YA's! The storyline's also predictable.
Decent story, written pretty well, narrated well, but I won't be investing time in the third book since I already know what's going to happen and that the only steamy scene likely to happen will be the wedding night one, and even that one will be bland. Not my bag. Fans of vanilla romances will probably love it though.
2.5 stars. I have no idea why this book dragged for me but it did. And I liked Jessica in the first book, but talk about whiny in this one. Every other moment was a tantrum of why she can't marry Alex. It would take me out of immersion every time. But I did like Cole's arc and he's about the only reason I'm going to continue this series.
The beginning of the book dragged a bit for me, and I couldn't connect with Jessica or Emily. Both characters felt very immature and swung back and forth with their moods. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it focused more on the changes Jessica was experiencing, the quest for that information and finding Cole. The confrontation with Cole was my favorite part.
This was a hard one to get through. The first book set up a decent premise related to angel lore and fell short in a lot of ways. This book falls short in all of them. I don’t believe the story between Alex and Jessica. The only conflict arises out of Jessica whining that Alex won’t ask her to marry him. Literally. That is the whole book. This is going to be a DNF series for me.
I feel this book was a bit of a disapointment really. It had all this build up and suspence for nothing and now vendicated is only 230 pages, these really could have been condensed. I feel like the plot is going nowhere and its getting dole hope #3 has more excitement!
This one definitely stuck with me the most. I had to take a couple days to let it sink it before starting the next book. The angels in this book are not what was taught to me when I was younger. Really makes you think! I could write a longer review but do not want to give anything away.
I read this in a day. I stayed in bed with snacks and water just reading alll day and I am so glad I found this series long after Keary wrote it because I was easily able to go find the sequels. Amazing. Chefs kiss. Keep it up Keary.
In the second fall of angels novel forsaken, the main character’s boyfriend dies and gets turned into a fallen angel. When her mother doesn’t believe her, he walks into her office and shows her his wings.
Really enjoyed reading this great book. Loved reading it so much I can't wait to read the next one in this series. Highly recommend that you read them as well. Can't wait to read book 3.
This story is an interesting take on good and bad angels. I like the characters, storyline is interesting, and the narrator is doing a nice job. I look forward to listening to the next book. This book ends on a cliffhanger.
This is a re-read. It seems my memory made this better than it was. It basically only gets 3 stars rather than 2 just for Cole. Jessica is an ungrateful brat
