The Survivor is the third book in the Families of Honor series. This is the first series by Shelley Shepard Gray that I have read from start to finish. As I have just finished this series, I have a very satisfied and happy feeling about the way this series has gone. Although, I really wouldn’t mind one more book just to see how everyone is doing. I feel like there is still more story to tell in Jacob’s Crossing.
One of the things I have really liked about this series is the fact that there has been a lot going on in each of the books. That kept them interesting and that kept them fast reads. The Survivor was a very fast read, mostly because there was so much going on, I just wanted to see what was going to happen next. Shelley’s writing style also keeps the story moving at a good pace.
The only problem I had with this book is that there were a few cliches that are seen in too many romances. The back and forth thing with Mattie and Graham felt a bit overdone and not very realistic. Also, the storm I initially felt was a bit of a cliche, but Shelley used it in a positive way that fit in with the theme of the book.
When I first read what the story was about, that Jenna was claiming Graham was the father of her baby, I thought it sounded a little too much like bad daytime television. But, as I have come to expect from Shelley Shepard Gray, she wrote it very well and it made for a good story of redemption. So, overall, The Survivor is a very good book. Shelley definitely took some risks with this book as she tells us in her letter to the reader, but they were well worth it and effective.
I was lucky enough to have received this through the Goodreads giveaways.
This is the third book in the series and I have no read the previous volumes. So coming into this book without any background, the author has done a pretty good job of making it a stand alone story. At times, she does allude to some previous events that could have used just a bit more elaboration to make them understandable in the context of the story but it was not that much of a distraction.
Mattie has obviously been through a lot in her young life and she is now ready to find love and create a life of her own. Graham has always been her best friend but should they explore another type of relationship? This book leads us through that journey as Graham sees his reputation and standing in the community sullied by gossips.
The story held my interest and moved at a nice pace with well developed characters. The only weakness I found was in the ending. There was an epilogue to tell the reader what happened to all but two of the main characters after they had weathered their storms.
We had been led to a direction for Jenna but the book never laid it out and never revealed if she had kept her promise. I would have been nice to have all the loose ends tied up.
The book was a light pleasant read with just a bit of hope to lift the spirit.
Mattie's body has healed from the cancer that nearly took her life...but can she find the man who can mend her lonely heart?
Mattie has faced more in her twenty-three years than she ever imagined possible. Having successfully battled cancer, she's ready to reenter the world with hope for her future. But while she was in and out of hospitals, other Amish girls her age were courting and finding the men they would marry. The only man who's ever made her heart beat faster is Graham Weaver, her best friend, who has always been there to comfort her, in good times and bad. Is it finally time for their friendship to become something more?
But cruel gossip is spreading, claiming that Graham's the father of the baby Jenna Yoder's carrying. Will Mattie's dreams of a happily-ever-after be crushed before they've left the ground? (back cover excerpt).
My Review:
Once more we find ourselves back together again with Mattie and Graham, the childhood best friends that have weathered more storms together than most will ever experience in our lifetime. Now once more, they put their friendship on hold even while Mattie's cancer is in remission, the rumor of Graham being the father of the baby, Jenna Yoder is carrying. Even though he denies it, Mattie can't help but wonder what motives Jenna would have for lying about Graham if it isn't true.
Meanwhile John Weaver has made a decision to pursue Mary who he has met through his encounters with her and her son, Abel at the Kaffi Haus. The only thing standing in the way is where Mary and Abel's feelings for him are, and whether he is prepared to return back to his Amish ways or remain an English man.
I received the final book in the Families of Honor Series by Shelley Shepard Gray, The Survivor, whose name is well-known for her stories of Amish families, compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. Shelley has written about the families in the series so well, its like a welcome breath of fresh air when you open the first page and begin reading. All of a sudden the reader is magically transported back to Jacob's Crossing and the lives of the characters we have come to know and love are back again, just waiting for us to follow them again.
This series is such an amazing one and I have connected with Mattie so much, not just dealing with cancer, but the strength she shows in helping her friends and family deal with their own personal crisis. Mattie could have played the victim, but in my eyes, she is the hero. Right there every step of the way has been Graham her best friend, who you have been rooting for from day one to see Mattie as more than a friend, but the man who loves her and sees who she really is on the inside.
I award this book, The Survivor a perfect 5 out of 5 stars and having read every single book in this series, I am sad to see it end but know that somewhere out there, the families I come to love as part of my own will always be a part of my life. For those of you looking to begin the journey in the Families of Honor series, start with The Caregiver, then The Protector and ending with The Survivor. Thank you Shelley for writing this series so well!
Title: THE SURVIVOR Author: Shelley Shepard Gray Publisher: Avon Inspire August 2011 ISBN: 978-0-06-202063-5 Genre: Inspirational/Amish/romance
Mattie Lapp has survived breast cancer. Now, she wants to reenter the world of the living. Since her long-time love, Graham Weaver is dating Jenna Yoder, Mattie asks Graham to set her up with some of the men he works with at his job. But Graham is strangely reluctant. He finally agrees, but none of the young men seem to fit.
Graham has been dating Jenna since Mattie doesn’t seem to be as interested in him as he’d like and he’s trying to move on. But he soon realizes that he and Jenna don’t suit, so they break up. Unfortunately, Jenna isn’t as ready to move on. She tells everyone that she’s pregnant and insists that the baby is Graham’s. Graham denies it vehemently, claiming he never even kissed Jenna, but that doesn’t stop his family from taking Jenna in and insisting that he do the right thing…
Jenna knows she’s lying and she knows who the real father is, but she believes that admitting the truth would be worse than the lie she’s spreading. Will Jenna’s lies tear Mattie and Graham apart and keep them from admitting to each other the love they’ve always felt? Or will she do the right thing, and admit to the truth?
THE SURVIVOR is the third and final book in Ms. Gray’s Families of Honor series. The series is about the brothers in the Weaver family and how they all find love. I would recommend reading the books in order so you know all the stories in whole, but if you don’t have the earlier books, or if it’d been awhile since you’ve read them, THE SURVIVOR has enough back story in it to keep the reader from guessing what is going on.
Mattie is a character I can deeply relate to as I’ve been where she’s been and traveled those same roads. I wanted her to find a man to love her for herself, and not a relationship based on physical appearance. It’s hard to feel beautiful when you’ve had a mastectomy and are bald. Graham is a stellar hero who’s been with Mattie, taking care of her every need since she was first diagnosed, and I was glad he argued that he really wasn’t the father of Jenna’s baby. I wanted to encourage him to stay strong, even when the pressure mounts. I highly recommend THE SURVIVOR and the other books in this series. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $12.99. 294 pages.
The Survivor by Shelley Shepard Gray is the third book in the Families of Honor series. Mattie Lapp has finally beat the breast cancer that stopped her life in its tracks. She asks best friend Graham Weaver to help her find a husband so she can start living again. Graham is hurt by her request as he's been waiting for years for Mattie to recognize how much he loves her. His life is quickly turned upside down when Jenna, a girl he dated a few times, names him as the father of her unborn child and the entire community looks at him with scorn. Gray also continues the stories of Lucy and Calvin's new marriage and Ella and Loyal's growing romance, as well as John's decision to return to the faith he left so long ago. Gray does a fantastic job of writing bonnet lit, creating a canvas of characters who light up the page. Have you ever read a book that pulled you in so deeply that you lose reality for a moment? After finishing this book, I had to stop myself from looking outside to check the damage from the tornado. That's compelling writing! Gray is one of the best in the business, and I can't wait to read what she writes next.
The Survivor, by Shelley Shepard Gray, is a book about family and faith getting you through life's obstacles. In this book, Mattie Lapp, a cancer survivor, struggles to admit her feelings for her best friend Graham Weaver. She is now interested in relationships and moving her life forward. While he had been courting others due to Mattie's earlier reluctance to be in a relationship, she asks Graham to find her a husband, and he sets her up with one of his coworkers. He wants to admit to Mattie his love for her, but this sets him back.
Graham's world falls apart soon after as a girl he courted in the previous book now accuses him of fathering her baby out of wedlock. Graham and Mattie have to work through their struggles to find a way back to each other. Like the previous books I've read of Shelley Shepard Gray, this is an inspiring read that takes the reader on a journey through a town full of families struggling with hardships, but ultimately finding love. I recommend it for fans of Amish fiction, romance, and family-centered fiction.
I received this book bundled with another book as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaway program.
There a tronato that goes though their community but find out what is important. We find out that Calvin and Lucy are expecting their first baby. Mattie is struggling with her emotions and where she get past about her best friend Graham Weaver as more then a friend. Graham is also trying to figure out his feeling for Mattie. There a rumor going around saying Jenna Yoder is carrying Graham Weavers child. We are introduced to several new characters in this story and series.
This was a fun filled and stress reading this story. Though I wished there was a better way to finish it about Lucy and Calvin and How Jenna and Chis his family made it out of the tornado? I I know that John married Mary. We Know that All the Weavers made it out of Tornado safe and sound though I would have like to know about Calvin and Lucy baby?
This is the third and final book in the Families of Honer series. We will find out all the answers, and spend time with some old friends. Mattie Lapp is now cancer free, and her friend Graham Weaver has been there throughout it all. He held her when she was sick from chemo, and went with her to her Doctor's appointment. Mattie has now asked him to help her find someone, and to fix her up with another Amishman. You will have to wonder if these two will ever get it together, or will William now win Mattie's heart? John Weaver has got to make up his mind as to whether he joins the church, or remain English? He journeys back to Indianapolis, and you wonder if he will return and marry Mary, and become a Dad to Abel? Loved this visit back with the Weaver's and of course, darling Katie. Don't miss this ending book! I recommend this fast paced read!
This is series Families of Honor-book #3d,"The Survivor" by Shelley Shepard Gray.
The final book of the series tells the story of Mattie, cancer was so hard for her but she had friends that helped along the way. One of those was Graham Weaver who was longtime friend from childhood. Mattie always felt secure with him around and leaned on him. I don't think either one thought it could be anything more for a very long time. Others could see they were made for one another and hoped in time they would themselves notice too. Do you think it is hard for friends to get past just being friends and see they are ready to become more to one another and live happily as spouses? Graham came to that realization before Mattie and decided to see someone else in courting, He wanted a home and family and life was passing him by. This is a story that you don't want to miss reading.
This was the third book in the Families of Honor Series.
I enjoyed it for the most part - but was a little disappointed as I don't think we got closer on all the characters by the end of the book / series.
Maddie, fianlly cancer free tries to refind her faith and love. She asks her best friend to find her an Amish gentleman to court her, he of course is crushed as he wants to be the suiter. Then there is Jenna, who dated Graham (the best friend) for a short period and finds herself pregnant and decides to tell everyone Graham is the father - although they never even kissed.
I just was left a little unsatisified when this book was done.
Just completed the third novel in the Sugarcreek Series, "The Survivor" By Shelley Shepard Gray. I enjoy a novel that provides me with an array of emotions from sadness, anger, tears, laughter, and joy. In this novel my curiosity was primed because there were a lot of love triangles and being a romantic I just had to find out what characters connected or didn't connect. Another factor that made "The Survivor" so interesting for me is that the characters all dealt with their own life's crisis and demonstrated how each handled their situation. Great novel. Hope you will read it!
This was the last book in the Families of Honor series and I very much enjoyed continuing with the stories of the characters beginning to end. These are light, inspirational books that have people dealing with difficult situations in their lives, leaning on their faith and struggling with everyday challenges. Some of these challenges are not so heavy and some are very painful. I enjoyed learning about the Amish lifestyle. I will miss the people I met here, but look forward to reading other series by this local author.
It is Mattie's turn, she has battled cancer and won, and now she wants love and a family. So she asks her best friend, Graham, to unconventionally set her up with someone he works with. Graham has been accused of fathering Jenna's child which is setting the gosssip wheel going. Graham's Uncle John makes his peace with going back to his Amish roots and could he maybe begin a new family with Mary and her son?
Mercy...Mattie and Graham could drive a girl to drink with all the dancing around their feelings they did. Will she, won't he? Over and over. Though, it's not annoying enough not to keep reading. An odd thing of which to be grateful, but thank goodness for the extreme weather in this book, else one might still have been waiting for a conclusion.
Thanks, Ms. Shepard Gray for another enjoyable book series. :)
This wasn't horrible and it wasn't great. I do not feel Shelly Gray honestly knows very much about the Amish community. I seen things that would never happen in a real Amish community. It was a quick light read. I read the previous books too, I think I am drawn to this series because of it's simplistic during a stressful time. I still want to read, but I don't want anything too deep or that I would be committed to and hate to leave when I need to go do something else.
Another great book in the Families of Honor series. Mattie, a cancer survivor struggles to find love and fights her feelings for her life long friend Graham Weaver. While I hoped for a happy ending, I was not sure it would turn out the way I wanted it to turn out. Won't give the plot away but it is definitely worth reading.
This was a very easy and inspiring read. This showed that you can survive any thing if your faith is strong enough. It also showed how people can live a good life on just the simplest things that life offers a person. If you are interested in how the Amish live this will give you a good insight.
I loved this series and this conclusion was worth the wait. It is a story of family, faith and integrity. It is facing your trials and working through them, coming out a better person because of them. The characters are real and the situations compelling. I could not put it down.
I enjoyed this book. I really like the series. However, I felt like I was left hanging at the end. I want more and I hope she writes more to the series.
Just started the book but so far it grabs my interest. I find these just enjoyable fast no heavy thinking reads. Also does make you look at your life and how it compares.
