The Painting
A painting in Matt's home office has him spooked. On the surface, it's nothing more than a landscape scene. But now it has come to life. One evening the creek begins to flow, the leaves on the trees rustle, and a deer is spooked by someone close by. As he stares at the moving picture on his wall, Matt's wife enters the scene followed by his ex-business partner. He discovers they're having an affair and hears them plot his murder. Angered, Matt comes up with a plan of his own. What he doesn't realize is that his plan may just cost him more than he bargained for ...
The Ruse
A man receives a mysterious text that turns out to be prophetic. A few days later he receives another one, which again comes true. As more texts come in, he chooses to act on the prophesies and what follows changes his life forever.

This was my first time reading the work of this prolific and well-established author. I chose one of his early pieces containing a collection of short stories because I wanted to familiarize myself with his plot lines, narrative, and character development. The stories focused on building psychological tension and although brief, they are page turners, and I liked the way his words heightened my anticipation of what’s to come. The use of irony and the way he highlighted the character’s desperation was appealing to me and left me with that feeling of fright that scares me, but one that I also yearn for when I read thrillers! I liked the way Saul took relatively everyday circumstances and injected sudden twists of suspense and horror. Rather than one protagonist, there are many characters across settings in a variety of circumstances. There is not so much gore but instead a strong supernatural theme in his work. For example, an ordinary piece of real estate becomes very unordinary, text messages become prophetic, an antique couch is possessed (and gave me shivers!), and a painting comes alive before your eyes. I really enjoyed Jonas Saul’s collection of short stories and am looking forward to more of his work. Before choosing this book, I read where some readers said they enjoyed the “Twilight Zone-esque vibe” and I concur. He is the author of the Sarah Roberts and the Drake Bellamy Series, among other novels, collections and short stories. I found this extensive list of his published work helpful when I was deciding what to read and hope you do too! https://www.fantasticfiction.com/s/jo...
This is made up of fourteen short stories. It is fast-paced, and often, the stories end in cliffhangers. The details in these short stories are vivid. Some tropes for the different stories are unknown evil, isolated setting, serial killer, race against time, twisted ending, and psychological. The only thing was that I wanted more detail and longer stories to most of them. I think Buring was my favorite because it gave just the right amount of story.
