The Black Sheep and the Princess

Rate this book
They’re the black sheep - the bad boys every good girl wants to have hold her, touch her, take her, love her. But being bad never felt so good...

“I have some spare beer, if you’re interested...”
I’d know that voice anywhere, and every time I hear it, it makes me sweat. Not that well-bred heiresses are supposed to sweat, but if you saw Donovan MacLeod, trust me, you’d need a change of clothes, too. It’s been eighteen years, but he’s got the same cocky swagger, silver-gray eyes, shaggy hair, and that sexy smile that promises a whole lot of trouble. Not that I’ll ever find out because he loathes me - thinks I’m some spoiled princess. So, there’s something I’ve just got to ask...

“Why are you here, Donovan?”
The lady asked a question, she deserves an answer. Well, Kate Sutherland, how about, I’ve fantasized about you for eighteen years? Or, I wanted to remember how it feels to need a cold shower every time you flick that perfect blonde hair out of your blue eyes? Or, Why don’t you come over here and let me show you, baby? Yeah, good answers, but I’ll stick with this one - I came back to help, because I think you’re in some trouble. My bad boy gut says you’re gonna need me - in more ways than one...

The back cover blurb for The Black Sheep and the Princess advertised a wonderful tale of two old flames reconnecting and engaging in some nice hot sex to boot. Some may consider the sex to be hot, but other than that, Kauffman’s newest was a major clinker. I found the whole plot and characters so dull that no amount of well written sex scenes could make this book interesting.

It has been 18 years since Donovan Macleod returned to Winnimocca, New York. His father was a drunken handyman at a summer camp for rich teenagers owned by Mrs. Louisa Graham. Donovan, along with his two other friends, Rafe and Finn, were nicknamed The Unholy Trinity because they were outcasts and pranksters. Donovan, or “Mac” as his friends call him, had a huge crush on Kate Sutherland, the owner's daughter. Mac always thought Kate was a spoiled rich girl and whenever she visited the camp, he would pretend she didn’t exist, but Mac has never forgotten her. After his father’s death, he moved to Manhattan, worked for the police force for a few years and then with his two buddies from the camp, opened their own security business called Trinity Inc. Mac reads a newspaper article about Louisa’s death which includes the information that Kate has given up her mother’s fortune to her stepbrother in exchange for the camp. Someone doesn’t want Kate around and begins vandalizing the property, causing Mac to drop everything, visit Kate and offer his protection and investigative skills.

Kate gave up everything to become the new owner of the camp, which will no longer be for the privileged, but rather for children with disabilities. With only her dog Bagel as company, she works to open the camp, despite her stepbrother's interference, the constant vandalism and the townspeople's disapproval. The arrival of her blast from the past, in the form of Donovan, on whom she also coincidently had a crush as a teen, surprises her, but Mac won’t take no for an answer and decides to stay on the campgrounds to figure out why someone is dead set against the camp opening.

Kate and Mac’s sexual tension for each other soon explodes and they no longer can keep their hands off each other. They mainly spend their days making love in the shower. Both open up to each other about their pasts, which include Mac’s issues with his alcoholic father and Kate trying to succeed in a world without the comfort of her name and money. They also decide to live in the moment because Kate knows that as soon as Mac catches the person responsible for the damages, he will go back to his own life. Kate can’t help but fall in love with Mac but doesn’t know how to keep him in her arms. She still believes he thinks of her as that rich girl who was always too good for him.

Other than Kate and Mac enjoying non-stop sex, walking her dog Bagel, and putting up with an annoying intruder who likes to cause fires and paint obscene words on empty cabins, there is not much else to this book. There is no nail biting action and even when the mystery is solved, it is all so very sudden that I had to reread it to make sure who the culprit was. I wish I could at least recommend some nice secondary characters, but they too were underwritten and simply took up space.

If there had been more chemistry between Mac and Kate, rather than them simply looking into each other’s eyes and then attacking each other out of the blue, maybe there would be something more to recommend. I quickly lost interest in the two lovers, and if these two hadn’t stuck together, it wouldn't have bothered me. I didn’t find it believable that these two had crushes for each other as teens and continued to harbor those feelings for nearly two decades.

The Black Sheep and the Princess is the first book in Donna Kauffman’s new series featuring the bad boys of Trinity Inc., with Rafe and Finn’s books to follow. Unfortunately, other than the catchy title, there was nothing else that would make me want to consider reading the upcoming books.

Audio version. I doubt I would have tried this one in print format but Sebastian York is narrating. I HAD to give it a try. So far, narration is great but can't tell much about the story.

Took me weeks to finish this mostly because it just didn't really grab me at all. Then the 'big problem' was so very lame and then the resolution was simple and it was over.

I don't normally like books that have as much internal dialog as this one does. But these characters are witty and smart and think the way I think. Donovan and Kate are perfect for each other. They take just enough time to come together. The mystery is unimportant but moves their character development along. And the truth about what's going on with the camp is about the only thing that could remove the last obstacle to Kate and Donovan's happily ever after.
Haven't yet read Unholy Trinity #1 or 2 yet but if those stories come first what happened to Rafe's and Finn's girlfriends?

Unholy Trinity, Book One

Retired NYPD cop, Donovan MacLeod has rejoined forces with two of his youthful partners in mischief , Rafe Santiago and rich, golden boy Finn Dalton to create an unusual security company dedicated to righting wrongs and helping the less fortunate get Justice. They had dropped their Unholy prefix to Trinity from their new company’s name.
In the midst of a job gone wrong, Mac discovers a New York Times headline: Sutherland Heiress gives up fortune to inherit family lake property.” Memories of his abused childhood as the son of the alcoholic Handiman at elite Catskills Camp Winnimocca, and of the rich privileged Kate Sutherland, daughter of the camp’s ever controlling, oft married owner resurface vividly as his gut instinct sends him to aid the one young woman who’d never fallen for the dark charming teen.
Now someone is vandizing the camp where she wants to create a therapeutic camp for disabled children. Could it possibly be her only step sibling Shelby, who wanted the whole estate, who was allotted only the camp property when Kate was willed the rest of the huge estate by her mother. Kate offered to exchange their portions, but Shelby is dawdling in signing their agreement. Mac/Donovan is determined to see her safe and given what is hers, despite her disagreement about accepting his help. Both are fighting a decade of never expressed, but still burning desires for each other.

Donovan McLeod and Kate Southerland have something of a past, but not a past either of them would have chosen. Now though, the two have been reunited, and their attraction is instantaneous. Donovan has reentered Kate's life when he learned that she was in trouble back in her hometown where she is trying to open a camp for disabled children. As Donovan helps her solve the mystery of who is trying to sabotage her plans, the two fall hard for each other.

I liked both main characters. They each have strong personalities. I thought some of the chapters were a little long winded. How many times does Donovan need to say that he doesn't believe in coincidences and that Kate's brother Shelby is behind the incidents that have been occurring at Kate's camp? That is really my main complaint. The relationship between the two develops realistically, and there are some sexy scenes. All in all, a good romantic read, not a great one.

This review is based on the audiobook.

While Sebastian York was wonderful as always, the story could not hold my interest. For me, there was way too much overly descriptive inner dialogue, and not enough action. There was only two small suspenseful, yet uneventful chapters, where I hoped something worthwhile would happen. But nothing did. The ending disappointed me. Sure, they talked about what they could do to the bad guys so they would get their just dessert, but as far as I know, nothing happened. Nothing in the epilogue gave me that closure. Very unsatisfying. Will the story plot pick up with the next book? Who knows if I’ll even listen to find out.

I needed something to read that didn't tax my mind after finishing the book I read just before this. I think Kauffman writes well but for this one I just wanted to get on with figuring out the mystery part and read a little less about sex since there were so many fraught sexual relationships in the biography I'd just read. Maybe silly me but then I did know what I would be getting. Also a bit of a quibble with her editor with regard to a descriptive phrase used at least twice. It made me giggle the first time I read it but the second time (I think it was only used twice - at least I hope so as I don't remember now) was too much. Personally I think the editor should have asked asked for something else to be used in place of the phrase.

This is the next series by Donna Kauffman that I decided to read. There are three books in this series which is full of hot guys in kilts how can that be bad. Some of the stories are a little unbelievable but that makes them every girls dream - right?

*I received all three books in the Unholy Trinity trilogy from the author after entering a giveaway on her Facebook page.*

I was a little lost for the first few pages, as Donovan “Mac” MacLeod and his friend and business partner Rafe tussle through a warehouse while being shot at by, bad guys? I wasn't even sure at first if they weren't the bad guys themselves, being shot at for breaking into someone's warehouse, making the shooters the good guys, or also bad guys. In the middle of all this confusion, they come across a piece of a newspaper article about Kate Sutherland trading her huge inheritance from her late mother to her step-brother in order to take over his inheritance, the family's lake property, which leads them to think something fishy is going on and she needs help, which leads to Rafe insisting Mac just go immediately and scope out the situation cuz they both know he always had the hots for her.

Goodness. Once Mac arrives at the camp and inserts himself in the middle of Kate's business, it's quickly obvious that something fishy is indeed going on and she does indeed need help, though she of course doesn't agree, yet, anyway.

Kate's socialite mother owned a camp for rich kids. Kate grew up privileged, occasionally visiting the camp, covertly watching Mac and jealously listening to all the other girls' stories about him. Mac's father was the camp handyman, kept on despite his constant drunkenness because he was a mechanical wonder and could fix anything, so Mac grew up on the camp grounds, running wild, hanging with his friends Rafe and Finn (dubbed the Unholy Trinity), seducing all the girls except Kate, who he seemed to studiously ignore but who he was actually always very aware of and assumed was out of his league and not the least bit interested in him.

Cut back to the present day, and sparks are flying as Kate and Mac are still wildly attracted to each other. Mac, who was a cop for awhile, and his two friends are now partners in a company called Trinity. They seem to be sort of like detectives, private investigators – they help people who need help (like Kate), not for the money but for the thrill of righting wrongs and helping people who can't help themselves. Kate was cut off by her mother when she refused to allow her mother to run her life for her, and became a teacher. She now wants to reopen the camp, which has sat unused for years, but not for rich kids - for children with special needs.

The story is told from both Kate's and Mac's points of view, with lots of internal ramblings, characterization, soul searching...all of which I love. The plot line about the camp – graffiti, vandalism, unwelcoming townspeople, and Kate's step-brother dragging out the inheritance trade even though it's to his benefit -- at times seemed convoluted and confusing, and I had a little trouble keeping up with it. But at the core of the book are Kate and Mac getting to know each other, remembering each other from their youth and learning how each of their lives since then has shaped them into the man and woman they are today. The banter between them often made me grin like an idiot, and when they finally gave in to the attraction, it is hot hot hot. I was head over heels in love with Donovan “Mac” long before Kate was ready to admit she was too.

The ending went a bit different than I anticipated, and as I began to see that coming I wasn't sure I liked it, but Mac convinced me right along with Kate that it was the best next step.

Overall, I very much enjoyed the book, and am eager to read Rafe's story, THE BLACK SHEEP AND THE HIDDEN BEAUTY.

Back in January I was surfing the internet and came across a contest to win a book from Donna Kauffman whom I had never read anything written by.... I picked Black Sheep and the Princess because the main character Donovan MacLeod was a "bad boy".. I did well!!!!

"Black Sheep and the Princess" stars main characters Donovan (Mac) MacLeod and Kate Sutherland, two people from very different backgrounds on the surface but with more similarities in personality than is apparent to either one. 'Mac' and Kate knew each other as teenagers 18 years ago and fate has brought them back together as adults who have not kept in touch but those long ago feelings spring back to life at first contact. Kate was off-limits and Donovan was the epitome of every teen girls fantasies and as a grown man now the center of a grown woman's. This book was good for me to read right now as it brought home the need to remember that a person's appearance and upbringing is not always a good indication of who and what that person truly is inside.

I fell right into the story of Mac, Kate, Bagel (the Beagle) and the rest of the cast in this heart warming and surprisingly at times humorous book. The boyhood alliance of Mac, Finn and Rafe are touched upon somewhat setting the stage for the continuation of this trilogy written by Donna. The next installment is Rafe's story and then Finn's both of which I also look forward to reading in the near future...

Kate grew up rich, Mac grew up poor. They met as teens & while there was chemistry they never crossed to the other side of the tracks. Now they are both grown up. Mac has started a business with the other 2 guys he grew up with, where they rescue the innocent. Kate inherits her moms empire but only wants the camp they all grew up at so she can open a camp for challenged kids. But someone doesn't want that camp to open. Mac to the rescue of the innocent Kate. The chemistry is still there and now they are old enough to act on it. The mystery is who is sabotaging the camp & why. Mac/Kate are great together. She is strong but knows she needs Mac's help. There isn't enough of the mystery and alot of the romance (rare for me to say) which is why I gave 3 stars. The books by Kauffman have some of the best lines in romance. I was smiling at her words by page 6. I have not found a book by Kauffman I wouldn't recommend and this is no exception. I can't wait to pick up the other 2 Trinity Books.

nice fast romance book to go through. i kind of remember reading about this couple in passing in other books so i wanted to finish the series. lots of descriptive sex scenes. i guess that is what donna kauffman is known for. i kind of remember that in her other books.

Donovan Maclead aka Mac is in partnership with his two best friends from childhood. They form a group called the Trinity whose purpose is to right wrongs. When Mac sees an article about his childhood crush he rushes to her aid.

Kate Sutherland trades her inheritance to open a youth camp for kids in need. But someone is leaving threatening messages and causing her to be fearful. She is shocked to find Donovan arriving to her rescue.

This was a good 'un. I liked the characters, the story line, the personalities, and the setting. I laughed a little, snickered, sweat, went gaga a little, had a few awwww moments, had a few heart palpations (of the good and bad variety), and was left smiling at the end. Great for relaxing, cuddling up, rainy day read, or pretty much anytime. I would definitely like to read the rest of the series and see how the rest of the trio 'goes down'. ;) Good for another read thru too. Looking for the next Unholy bad boy... Enjoy!

SMOLDERING!

I was seeking a light, interesting read for the trip to Vegas. I received so much more!

The storyline was captivating. Two teenagers from the opposite side of the tracks reunite as adults only to find out their unknown lust for one another is not unrequitted. Great lead-in!

Both the love story and the full plot unfold incredibly well. I loved the book and would highly recommend it. I left it in the hotel drawer although I forgot to write my signature,... Enjoy! Toni

this is my first time reading Donna Kaufman & I can say, "I'm hooked!!"

Great story line!!! Loved the character build up of Donovan "Mac" MacLeod--absolutely YUMMY

Lead female was pretty good too; I liked that she was tough, not a sissy and not afraid of a little danger....

Makes for an explosive storyline & the way it was written, had kept me guessing all the way to the end...

Great romantic suspense!!!

(Now I'm off to find other Donna Kaufman books!) & you should too

This is actually the first one in the Unholy Trinity series. Not aure why they have it listed as #3. Anyway, I liked the book. Mac and Kate were great together. The mystery fell a little short for me and kind of came out of nowhere. But the chemistry between the 2 was what made the book worth while. I look forward to the next one.

repetitive and boring - which is a shame because the story could have been interesting if there was intrigue. Ending came out of the blue in such a way that suggests Kauffman didn't know how to end this. Sex scenes felt as if they were rewrites of one scene instead of several encounters. Needs a good edit and more focus on intrigue and less on reflection of insecure feelings.

I listens to this on audible. I really liked the narrator. I love Donna Kauffman, but this is not one of her best. The story was okay, but the mystery was too drawn out. Donovan and Kate kept talking about talking, but they took forever to get to the talking. The buildup just didn't satisfy. I like the author and the story enough to read the next book when the mood hits me.
