The last time Latharn MacKay walked among his kinsman was in Scotland of 1410. Sensuous and charismatic, all the women wanted him, but none could capture his heart. Latharn's charm became his curse when a dark sorceress didn’t take rejection well. She snared his soul into a crystal globe until the one woman destined to be his love whispered his release. Now all Latharn has to do is find her and guide her to him without speaking a word.
One of the youngest archeologists in St. Louis of 2010, Nessa credits one thing for this the recurring dream of a heart-stopping Highlander since the summer she turned eighteen years old. Little does she know, he's not some fantasy cooked up by her subconscious. He’s a trapped soul determined for Nessa to end his six centuries in hell. Can love prevail over the dark magic of a woman scorned?

Her mantra is this: No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them.
She and her husband of over forty-five years traveled around the world while in the U.S. Air Force. Now they're settled in rural Kentucky where Maeve writes about her courageous heroes and the fearless women who tame them. Sometimes her stories are historical romances, time travel romances, or escapist romantasies, but the one thing they always have in common is a satisfying happily ever after. When she’s not plotting the perfect snare, she can be found herding cats, grandchildren, and her husband—not necessarily in that order.
Yes. I gave my OWN book 5 stars. Of course I did. If I didn't like my book, I don't think anyone else would either. I've had readers ask me why I haven't rated my books - wanted to know what was wrong with them. I've also had readers inform me that I shouldn't rate my books - stating it isn't right. I'm not sure what the "correct" answer is. After all, nothing in life is black and white --there's gray areas in everything. So, please know when you see my five stars on my books, they're not posted to inflate my ratings or trick anyone. They're posted because I love all my "babies". I hope if you find them pleasant reads - that you'll love my babies too. If you discover you didn't connect to my stories, I'm sorry they weren't your cup of tea and I still wish you nothing but happy reading. :-)
I thought I had already reviewed this wonderful book here. Maeve Greyson- what can I say but that I'm a forever fan of this exciting author! I will follow her work and stalk her blog(s). I used to read historicals a lot in my younger days. But they got old. They were all the same after a while for me. Young lass is forced to wed older rake. Though handsome- there's only so much this independent country gal can take of uber forceful men. I lost interest and hadn't read a historical in many years. Then I picked up friend, Michelle Styles's Gladiator- can't regret that move! Since then I am growing a new appreciation for the genre. However, Maeve weaves a different type of story than Grams's old historicals. Magic, sorcery, and a hero who can't physically touch his beloved heroine. How the hell can it be a romance then? Because Maeve does a superb job of bringing the reader inside the mystical orb with the hero so that we still feel that these two lovers are destined to be together. I couldn't put it down. I didn't know how or when, but I never doubted that I would be satisfied in the end and I was not let down in the least! READ THIS BOOK no matter what other reviews you read on it!!!!!!! And you won't ever see a bad review for this book (unless a total idiot slips out of their straight jacket and gets hold of a crayon).
I purchased this book on a whim but it was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are fun and mysterious and the nasty characters are despicable — perfect for this story! Kept me entertained and I enjoyed.
I REALLY wish Goodreads would allow a half star with their ratings as this book was so much more than a four-star.
What an exciting premise to a story this was. The magic of the Celts and the romance of a time gone by. A strong hero who'd waited for and found his true love at last, and a lonely woman who thought her dream lover was merely that - a dream.
This book took me out of the everyday and into another world. The author's world was so real, that even the magical elements seemed plausible, and it was a real wrench to tear myself away to deal with my own day-to-day life. I thought about the characters during those enforced moments and now that I've finished the book, I think about them still. That for me, is the mark of a great book.
Druids, time travel, hot highlanders... Need I say more? This is actually the fourth book in this series. The other books are written under a different name. I will look that name up if anyone is interested. I am not on my regular computer right now. I did rate the others a 4. I think this one was better.
Update: Maeve Greyson wrote the first three books in this series. They were written under the name Deborah Stigall. I recommend picking them up to read prior to this one.
A sexy, Scottish highlander romance with magical elements and a wealth of creativity. Beyond A Highland Whisper is delightfully charming and very witty. To read the rest of this review, please visit: http://www.blackravensreviews.com/?p=...
In 1410 Scotland, Latharn MacKay knew how to make any woman fall for him. Latharn had an undeniable charm that usually helped him get out of a tight spot with any woman until he wrongs Deardha. Deardha decides to teach Latharn a lesson, so curses him in a glass ball. Latharn is trapped and can’t escape. Deardha tells Latharn the only way he can escape is to find someone that falls in love with him asks to release him. In 2010, Professor Dr. Nessa Buchanan, an archeologist finally hears some good news. The grant that she has asked for has finally been approved and she will get to go Scotland. Nessa also wants to see Scotland because of the recurring dream that she has of a handsome highlander. She doesn’t know his name but every night she dreams of him. When Nessa learns about Latharn from his distant relatives the man she dreams about seem so much like him too. Nessa has already fallen in love with the mysterious man is it possible that they both could be one in the same? What an amazing good magical beautiful fantastical romance! Sure, the tale does have a few moments of being back in time but moves quite quickly to modern day without any delay and smoothly too. Ms. Maeve Greyson just knows how to tell a beautiful story moving along quite wonderfully with such nicely drawn-out characters that just make you love them. Even with this being part of a series I had no problem with understanding the story so even if you wanted to read this as a stand-along you can do so with very little problem because there is enough back-ground without getting lost. Of course, if you wanted to read the first book it might not hurt to do so just to understand the other characters and the strong familial ties of the brothers. Then again, I enjoyed the first book so that is why I had to read this book and I loved being thrust into the book. Then again, I did fall for Latharn too. Yes, he can be a bit arrogant and knew he looked good, but I still couldn’t help but fall for him too. Nessa the feisty strong-willed heroine also was a delight too. Will I read this book again? Yes, I will because it is well worth another reread!
My first book from Maeve Greyson, Beyond a Highland Whisper was entertaining at times and an interesting read. Latharn MacKay's success with women brought him only troubles. A powerful witch locked him in a sphere as punishment for rejecting her. His only way out was his true love's desire to save him from his prison. It all started well. The plot had a direction, interesting characters and a lot of magic to keep me entertained. Half way though the read i started wondering when the end will come. Why? Somehow I couldn't like Nessa with all her insecurities that were to much to put up with. So many doubts and I had enough of her. Her friend Trish believed faster Latharn's story and not Nessa....and then when Latharn came out....it all went nowhere. Even Gabriel's presence in the story was forces and his attentions towards Nessa. I was reading and I had no idea what was happening to the story. After the 3 days sexaton, Nessa remembered she had insecurities...it all felt childish and unnecessary. All this usage of magic and teenage misunderstandings started to grate my nerves. The end was a "say what?" A naked, erect, Latharn seducing the witch for the grater good....hmmm The story didn't read as well thought and put together. The romance and character build were not enough and somehow i couldn't like Latharn and Nessa together. Combine that with a childish plot and the result is a 2.5 star story and 4 babies for the happy couple (scratching head, I guess that will have to do it if one lived in a ball for so long)
Beyond A Highland Whisper MacKay Clan #1 Maeve Greyson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Latharn MacKay walked among his family for the last time in 1410. He was a highlander that many women wanted, including a dark sorceress who did not take his rejection very well at all. She put a curse on Latharn that took his soul and put him into a crystal globe that would only release him when the one woman who is destined to be his love and savior whispers his release. Now, all he can do is watch the world go by and change while he waits. Until one of the youngest archeologists in St. Louis in 2010 finds her way to him. Nessa has been having a recurring dream of a handsome Highlander since the summer she tirned eighteen. She has no idea that he is real and not some wacky fantasy that her mind decided to make up. Now all she has to do is wisper the right words he will be released from his six hundred years in a globe. But can love prevail over dark magic? Because now there is more than one foe she needs to be worried about.
Oh my gosh, I literally devoured this book. Maeve Greyson has done it again. She has taken history and present day, melding them together to give us one heck of a story. This book was fantastic, and it held my attention from the first page until the very end, when I was cheering for Nessa and Latharn. I enjoyed this story immensely and can't wait to read more from this brilliant author.
This is actually the first book in the Clan MacKay series. I did read the prequel book first. In this story, Latharn MacKay is cursed in 1410 by an evil sorceress and imprisoned inside a crystal ball. Latharn can see out and communicate with his watchers. Various members of the clan have been charged with protecting Latharn's prison for 600 years. Latharn can only be freed by his soulmate - whom he cannot speak to and whom Clan MacKay cannot tell about him. Latharn has been searching for 600 years and he finally finds Nessa. He starts visiting Nessa in her dreams when she turns 18. Through her dreams, he guides Nessa to Scotland. Nessa is an archeologist specializing in Scotland and feels it is a dream come true when she earns a grant to study ancient ruins in Scotland. Shortly after arriving, Nessa meets Brodie and Fiona MacKay who happen to be Latharn's current guardians. Can Nessa break the spell? Will the evil sorceress (who is still around and planning Latharn's downfall) be defeated? The book was a little slow for me in the beginning but I was very into it by the end. I actually preferred the prequel book to this one, but am excited to read the other books in the series.
What a great read! I could not put it down. This is One of Ms Greyson’s earlier books and although her writing style has gotten better, this book was awesome! Right from the beginning it drew me in. The story of Latharn and Nessa is such a great love story. From the beginning of the curse that sends Latharn to his crystal prison to Nessa breaking the spell had me staying up all night to see how it all went down. As I said, the authors writing style has improved but this book will not disappoint!! Looking forward to more of her earlier stories!!
Latharn McKay was cursed to a crystal globe by a sorceress six hundred years ago. He can see out but no one can see him. Nessa is the on!y one that can free him but she's in America studying archeology. He knows she's the one destined to be his but she has no idea. To Nessa he's the Highlander that haunts her dreams. Meave Greyson weaves a story that will capture you and keep you turning the pages.
read in order fantasy time travel and vengeance fairytale
This is more of an emotional tale. Latharn was cursed and for 6 hundred years he lived in a glass ball. He needed his true love to break the curse. Nessa is the one. It’s emotional to go through the losses and the time frame. The evil witch is truly evil as is her minion. The writing is lyrical at times and several past characters make an appearance. It feels like an ending but there are more stories.
Exciting, sexy highlander from the 1400's, a fiery modern anthropologist and lots of magic. An evil witch entrapped the highlander Latharn MacKay In a crystal orb. For 600years he searched for his forever love. Nessa was the youngest Archaeologist in 2010 St Louis, who came on an archeological quest. Fast paced moving storyline. I loved the characters. Good job done by Maeve Grayson.
This is the second book in the MacKay Clan Legend series though it can be read as a standalone novel. I love the characters and the awesome imagination that created them and their amazing exploits! Please note: there are a few steamy moments.
I love this book the best so far. I loved the development of the characters. In a life that is currently awash with a President on parole in the US, I really needed the escape into a world that was fighting good against evil and seeing good win. Thanks!
A friend of mine gifted this to me and I must say that this was a very enjoyable read. The plot follows a fifteenth century ladies man who gets cursed by a witch after rejecting her. In retaliation she curses him by sending him to the modern world where he has to adjust. Will he ever find his way back home again?
I didn't think I'd enjoy this novel so much! Of course, I was wrong. It was great! From romance to steamy loving then onto a lil paranormal. All in it was a very good novel. I'm so glad I decided to read it. Please enjoy..it's worth it.
Good book very enjoyable. Needs has a dream highlander who comes to her little she knows is her destiny has been laid out for her 600 years before her birth. Magic and a bunch highlander what more could you ask for in novel
Laird Latharn in a crystal ball from a sorceress for six hundred years until a loved one could get him out. Then still deal with the witch. What a mystery.
I just loved this book. Anything Maeve writes is great. Anything with highlanders and time travel is the best. In this book I think the best part was trying to get him out of the prison he was in for 600 years.
It's rare that I stop to write a review, but I truly enjoyed this book that much. The twists and turns are fantastic. Steamy, suspenseful, and mystical. Enjoy!
I loved every word the story was well written well researched, and thoroughly thought out. It was steamy and sexy with a true plot to the story. I recommended highly!
Excellent read. From first page to last this keeps you interested. This series is so well written you feel as though you are right there in 1400 Scotland. I enjoy when the characters from the first book keep showing up in the next and the next throughout the series.
It was a very enjoyable read. Out of the three books of the sons this one was the most enjoyable. The writing was better, and the storyline was very interesting. I love reading fiction like this that when red sounds so real.
From the first page to the last, Maeve Greyson spins a web that will hold the reader in its magic as the story unfolds. Don't worry, the dishes and laundry will still be there tomorrow.
