Novel first published in 2011 but offered again on Netgalley this year, Hide and Seek is a romantic suspense with a good touch of paranormal which keeps its promises in spite of some faults.
When Tess touches a dead corpse, she’s got visual and sensory flashes more or less precise of what happened just before the death. She also feels some things when she touches the livings, and she had a really difficult adolescence after the apparition of her gift, so she settle for working as a consultant for the police to help solving murders cases and she keeps her distance from people. I thought her evolution was well done but I liked less her TSTL moments where she almost put herself in danger to avoid putting the other in danger…
Michael in one of the medical examiners working with the police, and he’s intrigued by Tess. He offered several dates but she always refused, until a flash more realistic than the others brings them closer, and Tess realizes that when she touches his hand she feels safe. He’s got a stable and reassuring side and what’s more he’s not bossy or dominant. I liked how Michael and Tess complete each other, and how their relationship evolves fast but logically. They are cute together.
But the strong point of this novel is the plot. The idea of Tess’ gift is interesting and well used, the glimpses of the killer are chilling, and the investigation moves forward progressively and logically.
Unfortunately there are some jumps in the story, as if the author hadn’t known how to describe something and she’d preferred to move forward in time having just her characters say “this happened”. I found this to be frustrating, even if as a whole I liked this novel.
