I saw an article about Mr. Tekiela in last week's newspaper, so I had to request a few of his books. Oh, my, gosh! I love his guides. He has a small paragraph by each bird that has a special comment from him about the bird. I have to buy this one for my personal collection.
This informational text about Birds of Minnesota is very user-friendly for all ages. The birds are categorized by their main color and make it very easy to look for a bird in the book by what it looks like. The photographs of the birds are very clear and you can easily distinguish unique features of the birds. Children at home and in their classrooms could easily use the guide to locate a bird in the book they have seen outside. They could proceed to draw a picture of the bird, read the facts about the bird and write sentences in their own words to describe the bird.
This book will always hold a special place in my heart. It was gifted to me for one of my childhood birthdays and was the first of Stan Tekiela's books I'd read. It's absolutely brilliant. All of Stan Tekiela's field guides are. No other field guides compare, IMO.
It's a nice, quick book to teach you about birds local to Minnesota. But it does just have basic information so if your looking for a ton of information this isn't probably going to be your book but for out in the field, it's a nice pocket size book that's helpful for quick identification.
Happy to have a guide for MNs birds, but sorely lacking. Why organize by colour and not sub species? Why only show migration but not popular distribution? Sketches are also more easy to identify than photographs…
Stan Tekiela's Field Guides for birds and wildflowers of Minnesota are some of the most well worn books in our home. Whenever I find this one sitting out, I know someone has spotted a new and unusual bird that they are trying to identify - which makes me very happy. :)
I got this book when it was first published and still use it to this day. It is very helpful in identifying birds in my backyard and learning a little bit about them too. I would recommend it to any Minnesotan.
