UGH. Why did I read this? I didn't even really like the first one. I was just curious if the sequel might be better - IT'S NOT. And therefore, I have a real bone to pick, because this stupid book kept me up at night, fuming over the ending. This review contains and shreds the horrible ending. Ye be warned.
Lily is no longer narrating, her brother-in-law, Haywood, is and none of these characters are compelling or interesting until 3/4 through it. Predictably, Haywood (or Woody as he comes to be known) falls in love with Lily while Marion is in jail AND she is pregnant with his child.
I was pleased that Woody becomes a lovable character in the end, but I HATED that the author sets us up to root for he and Lily to fall in love, which they sort of do, but then leave Woody in the dust in the end, watching as Lily and Marion drive off into the sunset, and everything he loves or has worked hard for is gone and he is unhappy.
I really hate wanting characters to cheat on their spouses in books or movies. Predictably, I did in this 100% because I didn't even like Marion in the last book, and in this one he only shows up in the last chapter, whisking Lily off her feet (aka getting it on in the cabin for Haywood to hear). Woody makes an aside that through he years he will loan Marion lots of money, which makes Lily choosing M after all that much worse. AND Woody is the one who has learned to make an honest living for her and her child, whom he comes to think of as his own. I'm not sure she is ever really grateful for his help. In fact, we never know what she is thinking because Woody has a hard time reading her.
The long-winded point being that I felt deceived in learning to really love a character who gets the crappiest ending ever, betrayed by Lily's choice, frustrated by wanting her to cheat, pissed that she didn't, and then left in the dust, like Woody, without feelings of resolvement.
Ugh I just get angry every time I think about it. What was even the point of this book?
