A Primer of Medieval Latin was published with two purposes in mind: to provide a collection of material to prepare students to read ordinary medieval Latin texts and to meet the need of advanced students by furnishing an anthology of medieval Latin prose and poetry.
PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:
"The anthology reflects a broad literary and historical interest. . . . Too high praise cannot be given the choice of selections. Whether the student's interests lie in the medieval drama, the short story, the lyric, historical writing, he will find examples long enough to be enlightening, competently chosen and admirably edited."-- Speculum
Beeson's Primer is a really good book to translate passages from for all students of Latin! There are lots of shorter stories and passages that are good for students who are in their first year of Latin, but there are also some stories/passages that even my Latin teacher had a hard time with! The stories are all very interesting, and the book teaches history, culture, life lessons, and (of course) Latin all in one! I'd reccomend it to anyone who has any interest in translating Latin stories.
Read through a strong component of Beeson's poetry excerpts which were excellent, albeit with some editing mistakes--hence the 4 stars. Would recommend to anyone trying to delve into medieval studies.
