A Demon's Cry

Rate this book
Everyone has demons, but for Nate Godwin those demons are made of flesh and bone and refuse to leave him in peace.

Tired of running, young Daniel decides it’s time to dig up the truth surrounding the death of his father. All he knows is demons and hunters were involved, and since the hunters seem to be hiding something, who better to ask for help than a demon. The only demon he can trust, Nate.

But as the pair delve deeper into the truth, they have no idea of the dangers closing in on fellow guardian, Charlie. Each find themselves facing their own demons, some more physical than others, as they learn that everything comes at a price—life, truth, freedom.

So, when the time comes, how much will they be willing to sacrifice?

Following on from the events of The Occultus, A Demon’s Cry is a fast-paced supernatural thriller filled with all the wit and sarcasm of the first book.

I didn't know how much I was missing Nate until I finally was able to read this second book. He is as charming as I remember, but who doesn't love a bad boy with a heart of gold?
There is one thing about this story that frustrated me, and this is where we're stepping into spoiler territory... THE OCCULTUS! We spent all Book I trying to find the "thing" that would protect Daniel and Charlie from all danger, and THEY ARE THE DANGER! I guess fiction is inspired by reality, but damn! That was a blow XD
I loved the creepy antique shop. I loved the creepy doll. I even loved the mega creepy abandoned hospital scene. Ray Morgan has a talent for making creepy feel fun. Weird...
I hope we get a third book, because Nate is becoming increasingly interesting.

Overall Thoughts; I love this series, I cannot express that enough. I don't think this book is as strong as the first, however I also think the next one will be amazing. As a blanket statement, I find book twos are usually a lot of set up. You know the characters and the world, it's just the set up for the big bad, and this was a great setup. Regardless of that, I still think it's not as impactful as the first, and that's mostly why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. Still, I cannot get over how underrated this series is.

Plot; As I said, this was a great set up for more to come. I think the plot has a good balance of funny/fun events, drama and down time. I really don't have any complaints about the plot content. If you're really looking for it, I guess it's a bit repetitive, as in there's a decent amount of going to the same place and same people, but considering what actually happens at those places and with those people, I certainly think it worked in favour of the plot.

Characters; The characters are the characters! They were set up beautifully in the first book and that carries on into this one. They don't really have any developments, but again I think that works to the benefit. This novel takes place in such a sort time period after the first book, it makes sense that no one magically gets stronger or smarter or whatever. But they are all still true to the characters that were formed in the previous book. I love them all, and their found family relationships are beautiful.

Writing; I read a review for the first book randomly, and I saw someone there saying something about how too many of the thoughts are explained. Which I think is nonsense, really, especially is first person view books. This one keeps doing that, so if it's something you don't like, keep that in mind. But I love that Morgan writes like that. I think it adds to the character and makes them more personable. I also like skipping back and forth between characters. They're all distinct enough that you never question whos view it is, and it's refreshing to get different views on the plot points. I think the only thing I was a little thrown off by is how frequently Nate thinks Danny Boy in his head. I really enjoy this type of writing.
