Performing Haiku Painting can help lead one to deep self-awareness and expression of their highest Creativity, which in turn raises one's Life Energy. Through acts of high Life Energy one can potentially heal their lives, and emerge from the anguish which underlies our existence. Includes illustrations of Dr. Diamond's own Haiku Paintings and corresponding Life-Energy raising Affirmations. "The stillpoint is the moment when you sit perfectly quietly having completed the painting, the haiku painting at peace, in harmony, your life in perfect resolution. You are totally in the moment with no past, not even the immediate past of when you made the painting, of when it was made through you. And with no future. You, the painting and the world, are Now." John Diamond, M.D.
Dr. John Diamond graduated from Sydney University Medical School in 1957 and was awarded his Diploma in Psychological Medicine in 1962. He began his career in psychiatry but expanded into holistic medicine, concentrating on the totality of the sufferer. In his fifty years of practice, he has increasingly recognized that there is within us a great healing force, Life Energy, the healing power within. With his increasing involvement with this concept, his research has led him to concentrate on the enhancement of the sufferer's Life Energy so as to actuate his own innate Healing Power.
Dr. Diamond has held numerous senior clinical and university teaching appointments in clinical psychiatry, the basic sciences and the humanities, and is a widely recognized bestselling author of over twenty books, including "Your Body Doesn't Lie," "Life Energy: Unlocking the Hidden Power of Your Emotions to Achieve Well-Being," "The Diamond Color Meditation," "Facets of a Diamond: Reflections of a Healer" and numerous books on music and healing. He has a large international following, and his books have been translated into a number of languages including German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Japanese and Greek. To John Diamond, M.D., a haiku, namely a short poem of seventeen syllables, is, in essence, a “single breath span, … a distillation, a crystallization, of the deepest feeling of the poet in that very moment.” In Stillpoints: An Introductory Guide to Haiku Painting, Dr. Diamond has brought the concept of the haiku (or haiga) painting within the grasp of us all. The haiga, which is the most visual form of the haiku, originated as a simple painting that was combined with the haiku to convey some fundamental truth. Much that characterizes the haiga bears close resemblance to Dr. Diamond’s own work, so it comes as no surprise that he has adopted such a style of painting as a form of therapeutic exercise. Of point, the haiga is noted for its free and flowing line work, the elimination of unnecessary details, and unpretentiousness—as, too, is the esteemed doctor’s own writing.
In Stillpoints: An Introductory Guide to Haiku Painting, Dr. Diamond presents the basic theory of haiku painting in a way that is both inspirational and practical, showing us how we can use this form of painting as an action meditation, emphasizing the uniqueness and yet similarity of painting patterns and exploring the definition of beauty, whether in major works of art or in small gems, such as the haiku painting.
Despite the relative shortness of the work (a mere 49 pages long), Dr. Diamond succeeds in contextualizing his approach to haiku painting within the broader framework of etymological explanation and literary background, drawing on the writings of Blake and Ruskin to promote a deeper understanding of what he himself has to say. The author rounds off the work with several examples of affirmations, each of which is accompanied by a haiku painting of his own. As he suggests, why not try out this technique for yourself, and discover how you can come to explore yet another dimension of your own life energy and creative potential?
