When young waterbender Katara and her warrior brother, Sokka, rescue a mysterious boy named Aang, who is the last airbender and the long-lost Avatar, Katara and Sokka must make sure that Aang fulfills his destiny and saves the world.
Michael Dante DiMartino is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. His directing credits include the animated series King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill. The Rebel Geniuses series is his debut prose work.
Sokka: "So, where do I get something to eat around here?" Katara: "Sokka, you're one of the first outsiders to ever visit an airbender temple, and all yhou can think about is food?" Sokka: "I'm just a simple guy with simple needs."
In this issue Aang returns to one of the Air Nomad temples and it is only after exploring does the horrible truth finally sink in. I would have to have a heart of stone not to empathize with Aang's subsequent feelings of sadness. Compared to that Zuko's difficulties with Zhao take a back seat. The only thing that manages to calm down Aang's turbulent mental state is Katara telling him that she and Sokka are his family now. And so it begins.
The Gaang are on their way to the North Pole, but Aang is determined first to visit his home. The Southern Air Temple is impossible to access without sky bison, so the young Avatar is sure the Fire Nation couldn’t have attacked his home. Yet, the evidence is overwhelming. Is Aang really the last of the Airbenders?
I don’t know why I keep reading these books. I don’t have much more to say about this book that I haven’t said about the previous two. The art is all just screenshots from the show, and the writing is mostly from the show as well.
I’d say this book is a little better than the previous two, but that’s partially because they didn’t include any extra information after the story, so there wasn’t as much for them to mess up.
