About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Never did a collection of classic mystery stories captured my imagination so profoundly as this one. Full of well known short stories dramatized to perfection in the audiobook, this set riveted my imagination. I came out of each story as if I had stepped out of an immersive movie.

The tales themselves are classic and really good. This audio production of them was disappointing to say the least. Usually I cut audio books a lot of slack when they do extra effects beyond just reading. But I just couldn't get past the awkward music that lasted too long, the over-the-top maniacal laughter of Mr. Hyde, etc. It was just too much. Seems like maybe it was done for a middle school or high school audience with too much emphasis on being engaging.

I'm suspicious if it's really fully unabridged. A lot of narration and skipping past details makes me think it's actually well abridged. I don't know the source material well enough to know 100% though.

My suggestion is to skip this book and get these same stories from other books.

Took this out of my work's lending library for my recent car trip. Listened to The Hound of the Baskervilles first and my boyfriend and I really enjoyed it. However, we were sorely disappointed in the rest of the stories. The dramatization was great! Though the cheesiness made us chuckle at places. We both wished that the tapes had been more up front about the stories being abridged. Though my coworker made a good point. Since they are fully dramatized you don't need a lot of the description other than a narrator setting the scene every once in a while. Which would explain why they seemed so short.

Randomly picked this while searching for audiobooks to listen to on my commute. I've read a lot of the stories before, so I skipped Jekyll & Hyde and the last two Poe stories. But The Gold Bug has always been one of my favorites and the guy who reads the audiobook did a pretty good job with that one. I was excited to listen to The Hound of the Baskervilles because I've never read any Sherlock Holmes before, but I have to say, I wasn't particularly impressed. Overall, this collection was a decent way to pass the time before Halloween.
