About the author

Mannu Bhandari was born on April 3, 1931, in Bhanpura, Madhya Pradesh, India. She attended school in Ajmer and later she graduated from Calcutta University in 1949, followed by an M.A. degree in Hindi from the Banaras Hindu University in 1953.
She is wife of famous Hindi writer Rajendra Yadav, with whom she co-wrote the book, Ek Inch Muskaan (A Little Smile).

In post independent Hindi literature many new women writers emerged
and attracted the attention of readers and critics but after initial shining some
of them did not make writing of their successful career. Many women writers
have entered the arena of literary writing. Several highly talented writers have
enriched Hindi literature with their creative writings. To name a few Usha
Priyamvada, Malti Joshi, Dipti Khandelwal, Mridila Garg, Mannu Bhandari,
Shubha Verma are some of the most accomplished contemporary Hindi
women writers. Their writing reflect how modernism, contemporary social
situations and currents and cross currents at life have molded their writing and
subject matter as well as impact on them. Moreover these women writers
have written about Indian women, their pains, conflicts, predicaments against
the background of contemporary India. They have focused their attention not
only on the outer situation and conflict but also on inner turmoil of modern
women. In this reference writer like Mannu Bhandari deserves special
attention. Her contribution to the world of fiction dates to the 6os. She has
written in and experimented with varieties of genres of literature like the short
story novel, political novel, literature for children, drama, screen play, and
dialogues for film etc. Mannu Bhandari has also chaired the directorship of
Premchand Srujanpith in Vikram University, Ujjian. In 2008 Mannu Bhandari
was given for her autobiography Ek Kahani Yah Bhi the prestigious Vyas
Sanmaan for year 2008, which is instituted by the K.K. Birala Foundation and
given every year for outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by Indian citizens.

After relishing 'Aapka Bunty', 'Bina Diwaro Ke Ghar' and a few short stories by Mannu ji, I picked this one while in the mood for reading some more on strained family relations.
The blurb warned of something unexpected -
"मन्नू भंडारी का महाभोज उपन्यास इस धारणा को तोड़ता है कि महिलाएं या तो घर-परिवार के बारे में लिखती हैं, या अपनी भावनाओं की दुनिया में ही जीती-मरती हैं!"

And this political thriller turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. This got me hooked from the first page and there wasn't any slack till the end.

Mahabhoj in hindi roughly translates to the feast organised after a person's death for his remembrance where the entire village is invited.

The story starts with the death of a minority person in mischievous circumstances. And the title reflects on how the politicians and media groups jump on this opportunity for building their case in the upcoming elections.

Caution: This contains one critical conversation in "khadi boli" ranging around 5-6 pages. [I immensely enjoyed this added flavour]

Finished reading this book … I loved it to the core . I must say Ms Bhandari has done a commendable job, portraying the true picture of Indian political system and chicanery . The book is inundated with sarcastic remarks , words used aptly ( vernacular ) by politicians and a showcase of India’s society . It was penned down in 70s, but still the book depicts the true picture of Our political scenario , as if it is happening today also … a bitter truth ..a good gem for Hindi literature . I would highly recommend this book to all …

मन्नू भंडारी का महाभोज अपराध और राजनीति के गठजोड़ का एक यथार्थवादी उपन्यास है। महाभोज का कथानक सरोहा नामक गांव के इर्द गिर्द घूमता है। कहानी की शुरुआत बिसेसर उर्फ़ बीसू की मौत की ख़बर से होती है, मन्नू भंडारी ने बिसेसर की मौत के बाद का दृश्य प्रस्तुत किया है जो आज के राजनीतिक और पुलिसिया कार्यशैली की ओर ध्यान खींचती है। लाशों पर होती राजनीति, विपक्षी पार्टियों द्वारा विरोध प्रदर्शन और पैसे देकर रैलियां करवाना आदि को भंडारी जी ने बहुत ही सहज ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया है साथ ही मीडिया किस तरह सरकार की गोद में बैठकर उनके इशारों पर जनता को बेवकूफ़ बनाती है, से मन्नू भंडारी ने अच्छी तरह पाठकों को परिचित कराया है। कहानी की बात करें तो अत्यंत रोचक है जो पाठकों को बांध के रखती है। भाषा पात्रानुकूल तथा विषयानुकूल है तथा भंडारी जी ने कई स्थानों पर व्यंग्य भी किया है, जो भाषा को और भी प्रभावशाली बना देती है। अतः मन्नू भंडारी का यह उपन्यास न सिर्फ रोचक है बल्कि आज के राजनीतिक परिदृश्य को समझने में सहायक भी है।

What really amuses me about stories written by Premchand, Manu Bhandari, Manto, Renu, etc is the fact that despite that they were based on the society of early 1900s, or 50s or 70s, or 80s, they are very much relevant today and it is hard to believe that decades have passed between the actual setting of the novel and now.


In this drama (based on novella written by the writer herself), she writes about the caste and class differences rampant in the society (1980s) which is further intensified with the greed, corruption and dirty politics.

It is the story of a death( Murder!?, Suicide!?, Accident!?) in a village which is unfortunately the hot seat of the next elections.

My favourite part of reading the book was the rural accent and words, your tongue catches on. (Hamka jaye diyo sahib...kaahi kayun teen hi baras ki hoyi gavi...bhaithan do..)

मन्नू भंडारी जी की यह दूसरी किताब मैंने पढ़ी और मैं उनके लेखन से एक बार फिर बेहद प्रभावित हुई हूँ। मन्नू भंडारी की किताबें अवसर हैं न ही इंसानी चरित्र को बड़ी ही गहराई से समझने का बल्कि खुद के चरित्र के गुण व कमियों को पहचानने का भी। बड़ी ही कुशलता से उन्होंने किरदारों के ज़रिए समाज और राजनीति को आईना दिखाया है। दा साहब का किरदार खास रुचि लेने वाला है। कैसे मनुष्य नैतिकता के आड़े अपना स्वार्थ्य साधता है, दूसरों से तो झूठ बोलता ही है, खुद को भी धोखे में रखता। यह किताब वैसे तो बहुत छोटी है, जल्दी पढ़ी जा सकती पर इसका असर बहुत गहरा और लंबे समय तक ज़हन में रहने वाला है। हर भारतीय को यह किताब ज़रूर पढ़नी चाहिए।

An evocative and sordid picture of Indian politics and an accurate portrayal of the venal, scheming, selfish Indian politicians. Also a bold statement of casteism and the bullying of Dalits by the so called ‘upper castes.’ I wish it was longer - the shenanigans of our self-professed leaders w0uld fill countless volumes.

The first sentence of this book is 'Laavaaris laash ko giddh noch-nochkar kha jaatay hain'. Awesome!!!!!!! (Translation: 'Vultures feast bit by bit on unclaimed bodies'.) This book is a 'raajnaitik upanyaas', or political novel. It centres around Da Saheb, a politician, who is, you get the impression, supposed to be the 'good guy'. His rival is Sukul Baboo, the 'bad guy'. Of course, they each have their atrocious and supremely positive sides. What I liked intensely was the way Mannu Bhandari introduces her principal characters. First, a paragraph on their physical appearance and then one one their emotional personality. For example, we are told that Sukul Baboo spends a lot of time with 'sura-sundaree', which is a very posh way of saying that he's interested in alcohol and women. A third character is Lochan Baboo, a politician who was part of Da Saheb's party, got fed up and joined Sukl Baboo's party, got fed up there, too, left, and is now planning to form his own party.
In the start of the novel, Biseser, one of the villagers, referred to affectionately as Bisoo, has been killed. The rest of the book deals with the politician's attempts at finding out the murderer, while vying for the villagers' votes.
A very well-written book, 'Mahabhoj' is very thought-provoking and makes one ponder today's political scene. Lovely.

A brilliant novel. While Manu Bhandari says in opening of the book that all character, incident, plots of this novel's are imaginary yet after reading book all of it feels more real and close resemblance with Indian politics. First line of the novel " lavarish lash ko gidhh noch nochkar kha jate hai " has a very deep meaning and can be said to be summary of entire novel. Lavarish lash is a Dalit, A bonded labour ; one whose voice does not get heard and becomes powerless in the corrupt socio-political system. Gidhh is a politician, a jamindar, a policewala, newspaper-media.
Mahabhoj is a story of how a Dalit activist's murder get politicised, cheap politicians use public sentiment to drive votes ; How seasonal politicians carefully play the game of politics amidst this murder - influence media, police in order to get favourable outcome. It is the reflection of - political opportunism ,use of wealth and force in elections, police arrogance, in activism of intelligentsia, Dalit Chetna, exploit class, self- interest of opposition, No recognition of honest politics, power in one un-democratic man who preaches himself to be a follower of Gandhi.
One of the finest novel of Hindi literature I have so come across, a must read.

राजनीति के हर दाँव-पेंच को मन्नू भंडारी ने पूरी तरह सामने लाया है,अपनी इस कहानी के ज़रिए..इस किताब का पहला संस्करण 1979 में आया था..लेकिन अब भी ये समसामयिक लगती है..क्योंकि शायद ना तो अब तक राजनीति का माहौल बदला है और ना ही देश में ग़रीबों का।
गाँव सरोहा में बिसेसर की हत्या जो रोज़मर्रा की एक मामूली और अनजानी घटना होकर रह सकती थी..विधानसभा के उपचुनाव के कारण एक राजनीतिक घटना बन जाती है,जिसका हर पक्ष अपनी तरह से इस्तेमाल करता है।
मन्नू भंडारी को पढ़ने का ये पहला मौक़ा है लेकिन आख़िरी बिलकुल भी नहीं ���ै..ये कह सकती हूँ..पात्र का चरित्र,घटनाएँ,स्थान ये सारी बातें मन्नू भंडारी बहुत अच्छी तरह लिखती हैं।

A beautiful book that talks through fiction about the truths of village life, about being a proletariat, about fiefdom, about how governments at their core only twist the truth to get re-elected. When you read his in a news article it didn’t affect the mind. But the beautiful way that the author has portrayed the innermost workings of those most affected, if makes you suddenly feel strongly for something like this even if you’re reading it far away from indianin anotehr country like I did.

उपन्यास के शुरू होते ही बिसेसर की लाश मिलती है। सरोहा गाँव के एक पुलिया के पास। पुरे गाँव में हंगामा होता है। ये हंगामा इसी सरोहा गाँव में दलितों की बस्तियां जला देने पर भी नहीं हुई थी। तो एक पाठक के नाते आपके मन में सवाल आये की हंगामा क्यूँ है बरपा बिसेसर ही तो मरा है तो आपको इसका जवाब मिलते ही साँस में साँस आएगी और आप आराम से खाने का निवाला गटक सकते हैं। वो यूँ है की सरोहा जिस विधानसभा क्षेत्र में है वहां उपचुनाव होने वाला है।

यह उपन्यास 1979 में प्रकाशित हुई है। मनु भंडारी ने उस समय की राजनीति और समाज के बारे में लिखा है। आप जब उपन्यास को पढना शुरू करेंगे तो थोड़ी देर के लिए लगेगा की सरोहा में हो रही घटना कोई पुरानी बात होगी लेकिन फिर पाएंगे ये तो अभी 2023 में किसी जगह घट रही घटना है। इस उपन्यास में “दा साहब” सत्तारूढ़ मुख्यमंत्री हैं। वहीँ “सुकुल बाबु” पिछली बार चुनाव हार गये थे। इस बार का उप चुनाव दोनों ही पार्टियों के लिए अहम् हो जाता है।

इससे पहले की आगे बढूँ मैं आपसे पूछना चाहता हूँ जब आपने इस किताब का नाम “महाभोज” पढ़ा तो आपके मन में क्या विचार उभरने लगे? ये बात कमेंट में बताइयेगा। हम बिहार के एक गाँव से हैं और यहाँ शादियों में, श्राधों में, जन्मदिन पर भोज किये जाते हैं। वैसे २०२३ में भोज खिलने की प्रथा बहुत बदल गयी है लेकिन कुछ चीजें तो नहीं ही बदलती है वो हैं किसी भोज में जाकर पंगंत में बैठ के खाना। खैर, हमारे इधर न “चौरासी” कर के भी भोज किया जाता है जिसमें ऐसा कहते हैं कि चौरासी 84 गाँव से लग भोज खाने आते हैं। मतलब समझ लीजिये हर कोई ही उस भोज में शामिल हो जाता है। यानी कि ये भोज “महाभोज” हो जाता है।

इस कवर पर बिल्लियाँ देखकर लगा जैसे ऐसे ही किसी महाभोज में होने वाली घटना के बारे में ये उपन्यास होगा। लेकिन ये महाभोज समाज और राजनीति का ऐसा महाभोज हो सकता है ये मेरे कल्पना में नहीं थी। जैसे ही किताब में उपचुनाव की बात हुई और सभी पार्टियाँ अपना अपना मौका भुनाने के लिए इस कहानी में आने लगे तब मुझे पिछले साल मेरे कुढनी विधानसभा में हुए उपचुनाव की साड़ी झलकियाँ दिखने लगी। आप यकीन मानिये मन्नू भंडारी ने जिस तरह से महाभोज में लिखा है उस बात की गर्मी कह लीजिये या उस बात का अनुभव मैंने आख़िरी उपचुनाव में किया।


मतलब पूरा का पूरा कुढनी मंत्रियों का गढ़ बना हुआ था। शिक्षा मंत्री, उद्योग मंत्री, खेलकूद मंत्री जो भी मंत्री से आप मिलना चे आराम से हमारे गाँव में रहकर मिल सकते थे। खैर, इस वर्तमान में मेरे गाँव में विसेसर जैसी कोई बात नहीं हुई इस बात की बहुत ख़ुशी हैं। मन्नू भंडारी ने सरोहा में बिसेसर की मौत पर “दा साहब” का आना। सोच समझकर एक एक योजना बनाने का जो चित्रण किया है उससे शुरू में लगा क्या कमाल के होंगे दा साहब लेकिन महाभोज में कोई भी अपने आपको भूखा क्यूँ ही रखता।

आज देश में जो मिडिया की हालत है लगता है सर्कार ने महाभोज को पढने के बाद ही ये पैतरा अपनाया होगा। इस उपन्यास की “मशाल” पत्रिका वर्तमान में बहुत से अख़बारों और टीवी चैनलों की पुरखा साबित होती है। किस तरह सरकार किसी भी निर्दोष को बिना किसी प्रूफ के चार साल तक की जेल करा सकती है ये अपनी नज़रों से वर्तमान में भी देखा जा सकता है। समझ में नहीं आता ये सत्तारूढ़ सरकारें चाहे कोई भी सरकार हो उन्हें सवाल करने वालों से इतना डर क्यूँ लगता है। अपने डर को ख़तम करने के लिए डर को बनाने की राजनीति करते हुए सरकार ने बिसेसर को मारा।

लेकिन बिसेसर की हत्या का आरोप भी उसके अपने पर ही आ गया।

मन्नू भंडारी की ये उपन्यास अगर आज २०२३ में भी छपता तो लगता आज की बात है सब। वैसे समाज का कोई भी चीज़ राजनीति से जुडी न ही ऐसा सभव नहीं है। फिर भी कहूँगा कि थोड़ी सी साँस की ज़रूरत होगी इस महाभोज में सिरकत करने के लिए। क्युकि आप कोई राजनेता या मंत्री नहीं है जो आसानी से गटक जायेंगे हर निवाला। एक आम इंसान के लिए आत्मा को छिलता चला जायेगा इस महाभोज का हर निवाला।

करीब 46 साल हो चुके इस उपन्यास को प्रकाशित हुए और आज भी यह सटीक है। आज भी इसके प्रकाश से समाज की वह गंदगी सामने आ जाती है जिसे रोज़-मर्रा की भाग दौड़ में सम्बोधन नहीं मिल पाता। और इसीलिए शायद इसे इतना संक्षेप में भी लिखा गया है। मन्नू भंडारी जी के कसे हुए गद्य में ये सलाई जितनी किताब काफी मोटी बातें कह जाती है।

सबसे ज़्यादा क्षुब्ध कर देनी वाली बात यह है की इस कहानी के खलनायक बड़े जाने पहचाने से लगते हैं और वह असल दुनिया में ���ी उतने ही सफल और कुशल हैं जितने की कहानी में। दा साहब, जो कि कहानी के मुख्य खलनायक हैं, बिलकुल आदर्श के पुतले हैं और छल कला में अति पारंगत हैं। कुछ लोग गन्दी नालियों जैसे होते है: हानिकारक और संक्रामक। ऐसी ही बहुत सी नालियां आपस में मिल जाएं तो एक नाला बनता है जिसे "राजनैतिक पार्टी" कहा जाता है। महान राजनेता वह होता है जो इस नाले पर सोलर पैनल लगवा कर इसे विकास की गंगोत्री घोषित कर दे। यही उच्च व्यक्तित्व दा साहब के किरदार में दर्शाया गया है।

ऐसा नहीं सोचिये की कहानी में निरा निराशावाद ही है, हाँ आशा थोड़ी घबराई हुई सी, थोड़ी सिमटी हुई सी है। ज़्यादा बोलना राज़ खोलना ।
किताब का अंतिम पन्ना दुष्यंत कुमार की प्रसिद्ध कविता - 'हो कहीं भी आग लेकिन आग जलनी चाहिए' की याद ज़रूर दिलाता है।

किताबो के अनुसार जनतंत्र में जनता मालिक होती है लेकिन शायद ही जन को वो जगह आज तक मिल पाई हो। राजनीति और नौकरशाही के लोगो ने जनतंत्र के जन को सिर्फ फांसने और गला घोटने का काम किया है। कुछ इसी तरह की कहानी को लेकर लिखा गया उपन्यास है “महाभोज”।

दा साहब जो राजनीति के कुशल संचालक है और राज्य के मुख्यमंत्री भी है। इनके राज्य के एक गांव में एक हरिजन के लड़के बिसेसर की मौत हो जाती है। राज्य की बिपक्षी पार्टी और बिसेसर का दोस्त बिंदा जहां इसे हत्या बताती है वही पर सत्ताधारी पार्टी इसे आत्महत्या साबित करने पर तुली है। इस एक लाश को आधार बना कर दोनो तरफ की पार्टियां उपचुनाव में उतरती है। दा साहब को इस मौत से उपचुनाव पर होने वाले नुकसान का पता है इसलिए वो इसकी निष्पक्ष जांच के लिए एसपी सक्सेना को गांव भेजते है। अब सक्सेना जी कि समस्या ये है कि ये कुछ ज्यादा ही ईमानदार किस्म के व्यक्ति है जिससे इनका प्रमोशन कई साल से रुका हुआ है, इनकी ईमानदारी से की गई जांच कइयों को परेशानी में डाल देती है जिसमे दा साहब, डीआईजी सिन्हा, गांव के जमीदार जोरावर (जिनके हाथ में इलाके के 35% से अधिक वोट है) शामिल है। अब इस जांच का क्या नतीजा निकलता है यदि बिसेसर की हत्या हुई है तो क्यू हुई है? यदि हत्या है तो किसने की है और बिदा का क्या होता है? और एक दलित की मौत कैसे चुनाव का पूरा माहौल बदल सकती है इन सभी को जानने के लिए इस किताब को पढ़िए।
उपन्यास की भाषा बहुत ही सरल है मनू भंडारी जी की लेखनी कमाल कि है एक लेखिका का राजनीति पर इतना अच्छा लेखन आपको बहुत पसंद आएगा। किताब की सबसे अच्छी बात इसके पात्रों का सजीव लगना है पढ़कर लगता है की हम आज की राजनीति को पढ़ रहे है जहां सबकुछ फिक्स है राजनीति और नौकरशाही मिलकर कैसे आम जनता को अपने इशारों पर नचाती है यदि कोई इन सबके खिलाफ बोलना चाहे तो उसके साथ क्या होता है इन सबका खूबसूरत वर्णन इस किताब में मिलता है।

मैं इस किताब को सभी भारतीय नागरिकों को पढ़ने की सलाह देता हूं। ये किताब आपको बहुत कुछ सीखा देगी और आपका हिंदी साहित्य पर प्रेम बढ़ाने में मदद करेगी।

Subtle yet powerful in its approach to highlight the difference between the ideals we preach and the reality we experience. Leaves you स्तब्ध/ causes you consternation. The picture that the author painted several decades ago stays true to the current times too with a political figure preaching ideals and morals while protecting culprits with influence and turning a blind eye to the plight of the helpless ones all at the same time. Nuanced, raw and gut-wrenching at times. I ended up recalling the play 'Daaham'- Thirst by the Telugu writer Dr M M Vinodini which highlighted the caste and class prejudices in a similar manner evoking a sense of despair and dismay at the reality in the reader.

मन्नू जी का यह उपन्यास आज की राजनीति, और उसके दिन प्रतिदिन गिरते स्तर को भली भांति व्यक्त कर सकने में पूरी तरह सक्षम है, यह उपन्यास इस बात को बड़े ही रोचक ढंग से प्रस्तुत करता है कि जनता द्वारा चुने प्रतिनिधि भी कैसे जनता के दुखो को न समझकर, बल्कि उनके दुखो का उपयोग अपनी राजनीति की रोटियों को सेकने में करते है, और साथ में प्रजातंत्र में अखबार और जन संचार के माध्यमों का जो कर्तव्य होना चाहिए, वो अपना कर्तव्य भूल कर कैसे , सत्तारूढ़ नेता की चाटुकारिता कर, उसकी कृपा से कैसे अपना भला करते हैं।

This book is underrated and sold in a print that make it look like some pulp fiction.
The author weaves an amazing scene around an incident that is everyday occurence in India : murder of a common man. The scene involves the web of politicians, policemen, bureaucrats, 'respected' goons. It's witty. It feels like witnessing first hand the politics that unfolds behind all the idiotic rhetorics that we consume and digest everyday in the circus called democracy.

This is story of suffering of an honest officer at the hand of corrupt seniors and politicians. It is story of all honest officers working in system of connections-for more of individual good, although extent of similarity of stories may vary.
And novella my the same name is more popular than its drama. I read the novella.

यह उपन्यास राजनीति में निहित स्वार्थ, नौकरशाही व मीडिया को उजागर करता है और उस स्वार्थ हेतु नेताओं द्वारा किए गए प्रपंचों को भी।

इस उपन्यास की कहानी कोई खास नहीं रही मेरे लिए क्योंकि ऐसी मिलती-जुलती कहानियों पर मैंने कई फिल्में देख ली हैं, हाँ लेकिन 1979 के हिसाब से बहुत ही अच्छा लिखा है। अब तो इस पर नाटक मंचन भी हो चुके हैं। Youtube पर आप देख सकते हैं।

Well, I'll always be partial towards this book.
This novel has been dramatised and I was part of the play directed by my friend Late Chandra Shekhar Prasad at Civic Centre, Rourkela, India.
Two shows, on consecutive days, both full house and highly acclaimed.
