This is a great book for hard-core Batman fans, as well as anyone who appreciates dynamic cover art.
It's essentially a coffee-table item, one that you will return to time and again to marvel at many of the fantastic images.
Covering the best Batman covers from 1939 through 2005 (date of publication), there are some classic images ranging from gothic settings to vibrant splashes of color to minimal black and white and red used to best dramatic effect.
Its impossible for me to pick a favorite. I might be able to narrow it down to 25 if forced to, but there are very few covers here that I would consider disappointing or unsuccessful in doing what they are designed to get -- entice a reader to purchase the book.
Organized into thematic chapters with occasional commentary and creative insights from various artists, editors and Batman celebrities, it's a worthwhile hour or two at a time spent in perusing the contents.
There are some great illustrators whose work is featured here: Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, Jim Lee,Tim Sale, Alex Ross, Jae Lee, Frank Miller, Mike Mignola, etc. I guess if I had to pick a favorite cover illustrator for Batman, I'd go with Brian Bolland.

Not only great art from the last 6 decades, but a great reminder of the versatile and memorable fiction batman comics have always been - stories that deal equally well in the most cathartic and explosive pulp fiction or the complex philosophies of justice and morality.

Loved it overall, but not something really worth purchasing or rereading. It's a good reference and primer course but unfortunately there's an internet once you return this book to the library.

"its batman...cover to cover..."

an interesting collection of batman covers that really shows how batman has changed/evoled (visually) throughout the years. it really is a coffee table book, and makes me want to read each comic that is shown. another plus are the periodic texts from batman artists, authors and creators, giving more depth to the whole history that is BATMAN

I feel that this book is really more for graphic designers than for casual Batman fans. It's light on text, but the peices by Neil Gaiman and Neal Adams are insightful. It's interesting to see how the long history of a corporate character is shaped by individual moments and indelible images crafted by singularly talented artists.

Great collection of covers throughout Batman's history. Covers are arranged thematically. Lots of different styles on display here. It's interesting to see how cover layout and design has evolved over the years. Every cover has artist, issue, and date information, but not much else. Most of the commentary commentary comes from contributors writing about their favorite issues.

Great look at how the covers have changed, and stayed similar for over 50 years.
