I was born in New Britain, Connecticut, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. I also spent a year (5th grade) in Montgomery, Alabama, and a year in Ann Arbor, Michigan(8th grade). As a child, I always wanted to be a writer, but I had lots of other ambitions too. I wanted to be a teacher, a librarian, a movie star, the president of the United States, and a ballerina.
I didn't achieve all my goals. I never became a movie star, the president of the U.S., or a ballerina. But I've been a teacher and a librarian and most of all, a writer. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always kept a diary. I wrote poems, stories, plays, songs and lots of letters. Writing wasn't easy for me, but it felt natural and right.
I've always read a lot, too. I was an English major at Emory University (I love Shakespeare), and I also received a master's degree in library science at Emory. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago, and I taught children's and teen literature at St. John's University in New York for over 20 years. Now, I'm a full-time writer, living in Paris, France - the most beautiful city in the world.
Lucky Thirteen Amy, Tasha, and Eric are at a night time carnival. Amy thinks it’s magical to see the transformation. Eric just thinks it’s a carnival. Same as always. Tasha is excited Dwayne is coming. Amy thinks she can do better and doesn’t see (other than looks) the appeal. Amy doesn’t see Dwayne (as requested by Tasha). So, they head to the fortune teller’s tent. Eric says he already knows his future. He’s going to fail Spanish and tries to use Amy’s “gifts” to his advantage yet again which annoys Amy. When they get to the tent, its occupied. They decide to wait. Eric takes off. A girl comes out happy. Amy says it’s all a scam.
The lady asks if they want palms or cards. Tasha says she’ll go first/ Amy thinks about her mom being there with Dr. David while she waits. Tasha tells her when she comes out the lady is amazing. Amy gets a palm reading. She tells her she’s not like most girls. She’s very unusual but there are others. She goes on to say she’ll meet a stranger. She says she’ll recognize him. He’ll be very important. He’ll change her life. She says don’t take it lightly. He can be her best friend or worse enemy. Amy tells her that’s enough and the lady says maybe she shouldn’t know and Amy gets mad and leaves. Amy finds out Tasha’s reading was a certain boy at the carnival is thinking of her and looking for her. Amy says it’s Eric. Tasha thinks it’s Dwayne. Amy then sees what she thinks is another Amy.
When they catch up to her at the ferris wheel, she’s with four other people. The ride attendant won’t let them get on the ride together because it’s two to a car but they ignore him. The girls think it’s hysterical. Tasha says they should leave. She and her friends are goofy. Amy tho is captivated and continues to follow them. While they’re playing a game, the other Amy keeps missing shots. So, either she isn’t an Amy, or she’s missing on purpose (not to get found out or because of the cute guy she’s with). They watch as she contributes a dollar to a charity with the pize being a big screen TV. Then they all leave on motorcycles.
Tasha is curious why Amy didn’t try to talk to her. Amy goes over to the lady who the Clone gave the money too and finds out that her name is Aly Kendricks (after telling the lady she forgot to add her phone number to the lottery information). She finds out the girl’s address and phone number. Tasha by this time has found Dwayne. She leaves her to her flirting and finds Eric and her mom and her boyfriend. She wins the pink rabbit, that Dr. Hopkins was trying to win for his office and then gets scolded for it by her mother.
The next day, after school Amy calls Aly’s number and her mother answers. She’s not there and asks if she’d like to leave a message, but Amy says no and hangs up. Twenty-five minutes later, she’s at the Hillcrest Recreation Center were Ali is taking a skating class. She’s extremely bad.Ali sees Amy and is stunned. Amy tells her who she is and she seems not to know about her or the other Amy’s. They then head to a fast food place and Amy is hesitatnt to tell her about them. Ali has tons of questions and gets excited with the thought of them being twins. Ali tells her she and her brother were adopted. They do the whole get to know you and how I found you spill. Then Ali’s mother comes over and asks Amy a ton of questions. She then offers to take Amy home. She then invites them in to meet her mother. Her mom and Dr. Hopkins are shocked. It’s found out that Aly can’t see well and needs glasses. Amy is invited to a sleepover she’s having. After they leave, Amy’s mom warns her about the dangers of getting all the clones together, but Amy says she can’t be a clone. She don’t seem to have the “makeup” of the others (with her poor skating skills and her bad vision). Plus she has allergies. Amy says she’s not one of the 12 but she’s told there were 13. Basically 13 (when developed) was found not to have the perfection of the others. Nancy says she doesn’t think it’s a good idea that she and Aly become friends, but Amy says she likes her and she wants to be friends. Nancy says just keep her mouth shut. They just resemble each other is all.
She rushes over to tell Tasha and Eric but Tasha’s doing homework with Dwayne. Tasha and Dwaryne are studying Romeo and Juliet and Tasha is acting like a ditz. Amy gets on her about this when he leaves but decides not to get into an argument over it. Eric comes home but Lauren is with him so she just leaves. When she gets home, Aly calls and they talk about assignments and tv shows they like. Amy finds out that Aly doesn’t like figure skating. Her mother use to do it and made a deal with her to try it and if she didn’t like it after three months she can quit. Which is the same deal Amy has with Nacy. They find out they have things in common (swimming, similar taste in fashion, music, actors, singers). They both like Will Smith. Amy thinks she might be a good *Substitute* for Tasha.
Even tho she promises her mother she won’t show off, Amy has to use her reflexes right away to save Aly from being hit by one of her brother’s balls. Aly’s room is in the basement. It’s very impressive. IT’s ecen got a refridgerator. There’s a slight slip up when Aly is talking about how her father made a dollhouse in her room and now he’s a cxarpenter. When asked about her father, Amy says he was killed. Then Aly reminds her she said she was adopted. So she has to add *before* she was adopted. Aly’s friends are excited over them and say they could be twins. Aly says she thinks they are and were seperatated at birth. She likes all her friends (Karen, Melissa, Courtney, and Amber). They decide to sneak to a neighboors for a late night swim, but get caught and rush off. Late that night, Aly sees Amy jump up to pull the window down, but she tells her she’s just dreaming.
The next day, she tries to tell Tasha about how much fun she had but she doesn’t get why it was so fun to pretend to be normal. Paraticularly since when she was normal she didn’t like it. Then she gets offended when Amy tells her it’s nice for a change to not have people ask special things of her. She convinces Tasha to go to the mall with her, Aly, and Karen but when she gets to Tasha’s Dwayne is there. Tasha is now pretending she’s into comic books and is scared of horror movies. On the way to the mall, Tasha doesn’t make it a secret she doesn’t approve of the prank they pulled at the sleepover.
Aly and Karen don’t make the best impression on Tasha. They start to try on makeup at one of the counters and the saleslady is irritated because she knows they aren’t going to buy anything. She ends up calling security for “disturbing the rest of the customers”. Amy, Then Aly decides to get her hair cut like Any’s. Then Amy buys them matching outfits. Then they don’t have enough money for a movie afterward so Aly and Amy pull a prank on the ticket taker so they can all get in. When they get to Amy’s, she and Tasha have a fight about Amy doing the same thing that Amy accused Tasha of doing. The movie was really bad but Amy laughed at it b and said she liked it because Aly did. She also added like she was bad at math because Aly said she was. Amy decides after this not to use her gifts. She’s late for school because she refuses to use her speed. She doesn’t know an answer in class because she hasn’t read the chapter. She hasn’t praticed her sheet music so her mistakes are natural. She even turns down Eric’s request to look in his computer (that’s broken) and tighten a screw (that’s the issue). She tells him to ask Lauren because Aly suggested she play hard to get. When she gets home she writes Aly an email and invites her to spend the night.
Aly tells Amy about a rave Karen’s sister heard about. So, they sneak out her bedroom window. Amy’s able to get down the tree limb because of her abilities, but she forgot the tree limb might be too far of a stretch for Aly and has to come to her rescue (and brush off her questions). When they try to hitch hike, they get lucky and a policeman finds them and offers to take them home when they tell him they got lost. And again when he says he’s going to walk them to their apartment and inside when a robbery is called and he has to leave quick. So, they finally make it to the rave. (The policeman drove them right to it). They find Karen and Kristen and there with three guys. Somehow they end up in the guys car and the one driving (well they all are) REALLY DRUNK. Amy gets the driver out the way and takes control of the car (pulling them over to the side of the road). She takes down the other guys, gets the girls back in the car, and rvies them to her house (wondering how she’ll explain Karen and Kristen to her mom. She doesn’t have enough money to get more gas to take them home).
Tasha and Eric hear them and I guess they get away with it because the next chapter is Tasha and Amy in school. Tasha gets on Amy for how dangerous what she did was and how she said she wasn’t gonna use her gifts. But then Tasha confesses she and Dwayne went to the carnival again and she showed how smart she was when they played a trivia game. Tasha asks Amy is she going to her piano lesson and she says soft of. Aly goes to Amy’s piano lesson and does so bad she gets the teacher to say he’s going to tell Amy’s mother to switch her to another instrument. Amy tho does a double axle and gets Aly complimented by her skating teacher. Aly tries to do the move and ends up on her face (hoping that if she just pratices it she can learn it). Of course she’s full of questions. Amy can’t tell her anything and just says she has no explanation and she guesses it’s just natural talent.
Aly suggests they go to the carnival, but when they get there its closed. Aly got the date wrong. They decide to sneak in anyway and ride the caroseul. Something they’ve both wanted to do but were too embarrassed. The ride doesn’t stop so Amy jumps off. When Aly jumps off she falls on her face. Again she wonders why Amy’s so much better at everything than she is. Even her parents have noticed and told her that maybe she’ll learn from Amy. This leaves Amy in disbelief because she can’t imagine her mother (or Tasha) making them feel like someone else is better. Aly wants to ride the ferris wheel but Amy wants to go home. She’s not worried for herself, but she knows if they get stuck Aly won’t be able to make the jump.
Aly doesn’t want to leave but Amy says she’s leaving. She walks off but before she can get out the gates she hears Aly calling her. Aly is climing the ferris whell. Amy isn’t in time to catch her and she falls. The paramedics are called. Aly needs a blood transfusion. Despite what this will mean, Amy agrees to it. Amy notices Aly’s dad looks excited. Dr. Hopkins bursts through the door and offers his blood instead. Aly’s going to make it. Mr. Kendricks it turns out was a janitor at Project Crescent and had learned about what they were doing. Dr. J gave them the 13th baby to take to an adoption center, but he and his wife (who were older) were trying to adopt a baby and having problems so they just kept her. Then they had a son.
They knew about Amy immediately and that’s why they were excited about the transfusion because it would have been nice if Aly were “special”. After this tho, Amy is told Aly’s parents won’t allow them to see each other anymore and they’ll be moving. Eric gets an A on his Spanish test. Tasha is done with seeing Dwayne. After a movie with Tasha and Eric, Amy gets an email from Aly saying even tho she’ll be moving and they aren’t allowed to be friends, they can still be friends and email. Amy deletes the email without responding.
My Thoughts: There was NOTHING whatsoever “lucky” about meeting Aly. Nancy worried that Amy would be a bad influence on her. NO! She was a bad influence on AMY. And it’s really not being a bad inlurence if someone wants to imitate you because they don’t have confidence in themselves. But I guess a lot of this falls on the parents too for making Amy seem superior to Aly. A lot of “Lucky 13” reminded me of the movie “Twitches” which was also about twin girls that find themselves and reunite after years of living with their adoptive parents, But unlike Amy and Aly these twins both “share” there strengths (powers). When I think about the end, at first I was a little surprised she din’t want any contact with Aly again, but then when I think about it Aly really was a “toxic” person and when you find that out about people you have to do what you have to do. Rating: 5 and a half

This time in Amy's crazy life she's at the carnival with Tasha and Eric when she spots another clone. Wanting to know what she's like, Amy goes undercover to observe her life and learns there is a thirteenth clone. Unlike the others she is completely normal in ability, but when Amy's relationship with her friends get rocky she can't resist the urge to become her friend and get a taste of a normal life without abilities.
This book really surprised me.
Amy is going through a hard time with her friends using her for her abilities. It wasn't hard to sympathize with her since her friends really are taking her for granted in certain situations. To be frank, I actually think a little less of Eric and Tasha from the events of this novel. There wasn't a true feeling of remorse from them for their actions in my opinion, but that's probably my only nitpick because everything else was so stellar.
The writing as always was super easy to read and it was hard to put down. The plot followed a more normal kind of storyline compared to the other books in the series, but the way it was done was handled expertly and there's still plenty of action throughout to keep you interested. This novel also had heart, especially in the interactions between Amy and Aly, and it pulled at my heartstrings in spots.
I'm really pleased with this one, and I can't wait to continue Amy's journey!
As with other books in the series, it is best to read them in order. However, in the first part of the book, you are gracefully brought up to speed as to what Replica is all about. If you get a chance watch the movie "Anna to the Infinite Power.” This has a similar theme.
A fortuneteller at the carnival informs Amy that we will meet a stranger and that stranger would be familiar. Amy Seven encounters Aly (Amy Thirteen) and a different lifestyle. Amy Seven must make a few decisions. The decisions may prove to be fatal.
Is using her special abilities in the service of her friends being "taken advantage of"? Is dummying down to be a friend worth the price?
Is it ethical to give someone else the false hope that they can be like her? If you were Amy what would you do?
Now enjoy the saga of "Lucky Thirteen" Sometimes it's better to be superstitious!
This one was another fun favorite of mine. Aly was a lot — a real wild child! I also love how she managed to be connected to the project despite being (un)lucky thirteen. Suspend your disbelief with the age again because Amy being twelve in this scenario is a bit wild — but it’s fiction. It definitely was a nice change in the series from so much mystery and I do love how with all of these books you can pretty much pick up one of them in the series and not feel too out of sorts if you read it as a standalone.

I am so impressed by how well contained these books are. Anyone could pick up any in the middle and know exactly what was going on. I found this one slightly less realistic due to all the raving, but hey, what would I know?
Nice and short breather book in between a few more serious and longer ones- it was okay. Amy meets another clone, this time a failed one and they become friends- but Aly wants to be perfect like Amy is, except she can't be. A pretty short and interesting story.
Amy has met another Amy - Aly Kendricks! But Aly is no ordinary Amy... in fact, she's like an ordinary human! Amy and Aly become fast friends, but Aly's fast life gets Amy into some trouble... and puts Aly in danger. What will Amy do?!
Meanwhile, Tasha is obsessing over Dwayne the Dummy, and dumbing herself down for his sake. Eric is being tutored in Spanish by a hot older girl.
