Amy's secret is out! Her worst enemy, Jeanine, knows that Amy is a clone. Now Amy fears the worst. She's sure Jeanine will blab the truth to everyone--maybe even try to sell Amy's story to some sleazy tabloid. But Jeanine never gets a chance to make good on any of her threats. An accident leaves her in a coma. Rumors of foul play spread like wildfire. The number one suspect . . . Amy.
Sure, Amy wanted to stop Jeanine's big mouth, but maybe she wasn't the only one. . . .
I was born in New Britain, Connecticut, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. I also spent a year (5th grade) in Montgomery, Alabama, and a year in Ann Arbor, Michigan(8th grade). As a child, I always wanted to be a writer, but I had lots of other ambitions too. I wanted to be a teacher, a librarian, a movie star, the president of the United States, and a ballerina.
I didn't achieve all my goals. I never became a movie star, the president of the U.S., or a ballerina. But I've been a teacher and a librarian and most of all, a writer. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always kept a diary. I wrote poems, stories, plays, songs and lots of letters. Writing wasn't easy for me, but it felt natural and right.
I've always read a lot, too. I was an English major at Emory University (I love Shakespeare), and I also received a master's degree in library science at Emory. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago, and I taught children's and teen literature at St. John's University in New York for over 20 years. Now, I'm a full-time writer, living in Paris, France - the most beautiful city in the world.
Wow. I did not expect what happened in this book to happen. This book had more depth than most previous books. I can see younger preteens and teens really guessing at the answers for this. While not hard to put together here is some mystery that isn't clear cut. This book left me feeling both relieved and a bit sad for the characters. Especially for Amy. And a bit disappointed with Tasha.
Jännittävä juoni, jonka dramaattinen loppuratkaisu oli unohtunut mielestäni. Hyvä väliosa sarjan pääjuonta ajatellen, mutta odotan mielenkiinnolla miten Järjestö-kuviot jatkuvat seuraavassa kirjassa.
Ice Cold Amy and Tasha look through hair style magazines. Amy’s finally been given permission to cut her hair. The only thing is her mother will be doing it and she’s learned how to cut hair watching a video. All the styles Amy want are complicated so her mother suggests a bob and Amy says that’s fine. Tasha points out Amy won student council representative and a more mature hair style will make the other students respect her more. Amy’s proud of the fact that she didn’t even have to use her powers. All she had to do is make a speech about how the student council should be more involved with what’s going on so the students can be more involved. Janine just tried to butter people with “gifts”. Then they start talking about how wealthy Janine is. To her mother comments not as much as they think she is. Janine’s mother was asking other parents how much they give their kids because she didn’t want to give Janine more than her classmates.
Mrs. Chandler is taking her time with the cut and she tells them why it’s important. Any’s hair might be normal but what it holds can be harmful if it gets into the wrong hands. She warns Tasha that she can *never* ever tell about Amy. She lets them both know it’s not a joking matter. After her mother finishes it doesn’t look any worse, but it doesn’t look any better. Tasha assures her it’ll look better when it’s dry. After this they get ready for a classmate of theirs (Simone)’s birthday party. Tasha warns her Janine and Linda will be at the party. Luckily Tasha was right. The new style is fuller and has more bounce. At the party, everyone seems to love Amy’s hair. Of course, Janine finds a way to bring her down by making fun of the fact that her mother cut her hair. Then making her out to be a charity case but then she gets on some of the other girls by spreading nasty gossip that “She’s heard”.
While dancing with Laine, Amy accidently knocks Janine into the pool and she makes a huge scene. Janine retaliates by dumping a milkshake on her head. Simone says Janine is just evil. Amy wants to know why then did she invite her to her party and she says she’s popular. Simone tho thinks she’s evil and the devil in disguise. At a student council meeting, it’s announced that school supplies are being stolen. Amy suggests they could investigate. Cliff dismisses it by telling her if she sees anyone walking out a waste basket to let them know. Nothing else is discussed. Carrie and Amy talk about it after the meeting. Carrie says it could be a prank or Janine could be stealing the stuff and selling it to other schools. Before it was mentioned she had a new portable CD player. Now she’s walking down the halls with a cell phone. She has on a new suede coat that cost six hundred dollars. Carrie says her mother doesn’t know she’s had it. She’s been keeping it at school in her locker.
Amy uses her super sight to look into Janine’s bag for stolen merchandise but sees the silver bracelet with the turquoise stones which was a present to Simone. Tasha and Amy debate whether Janine bought a similar bracelet or she stole it. While Dr. Hopkins checks Amy out to see if she back to normal, Tasha tells Mrs. Chandler about the bracelet and she says that maybe Simone lent Janine the bracelet for a day (something neither of them considered). They make a call to Janine but bother her lines are busy so she leaves a message. Dr. Hopkins tell Amy she’s almost back to normal. Simone isn’t wearing the bracelet the next day and Amy asks her why. She says she didn’t like it that much and gave it to Janine. Amy finds this strange because she really seemed to like it at the party. Then she sees tears in Simone’s eyes.
Amy gets Simone excused to “work on their project” in the library. She finds out Janine threatened her with telling everyone about her dad being in jail for stealing some money. She starts to wonder if this is how Janine’s been getting so much stuff lately. Amy has detention after school (for being late to class). She notices a guy with piercings and tattoos slip a envelope with bills on it to Janine. She finds out from Eric his name is Arthur but everyone calls him Dirk (no one knows his real name). Eric says he has head lice. This must be the reason he shaved his yead but he probably just told everyone he did it to be cool. It all makes sense to Amy. So, she goes to Janine’s house. Amy confronts her with her susceptions and tells her she has to stop. Janine asks her how she plans to stop her. Amy says she’ll go to Dr. Noble. She says if she does she’ll tell them something about her. She’ll tell that she’s not a normal human being. She was genetically engineered with 11 others. She’s a clone. She then tells her she doesn’t look well, “suggests” she go home, and slams the door in her face.
Tasha and Eric tell Amy to tell Janine that she won’t tell if she doesn’t tell. Amy doesn’t know tho how long her silence will last. Her mother freaks out and wonders how she knows. Then she asks Eric and Tash how she’d know (as in did they tell). They defend themselves but leave right after Amy apologizes for her mom. Amy hears her mother calling Dr. Hopkins. Janine calls with her “request” to write a paper for her. Mrs. Chandler tells her she has to talk to Janine and make her understand how humanity is at stake. The next day at school, she tries to talk to Janine but she brushes her off in front of her friends. She knows Janine won’t listen to reason and this will go on and on and on and on (and won’t stop at homework). She tries to talk to Janine a second time and tells her she won’t tell if she doesn’t but Janine says it’s not enough. *Her* secret is bigger. She says she’ll resign student council and she’ll tell everyone that her friends stuffed the ballot box. Janine says this isn’t enough either. Then she asks Amy what her IQ is. She says won’t tell her secret if she does what she says. Janine tho threatens to drop a story to a tabloid before walking off. (when Amy says she won’t be her slave).
Amy hears a scream and then sees the crumpled body of Janine with teachers surrounding her. Janine is taken to the hospital and is in extremely critical condition Ammy finds out from Tasha later. Tasha tells her if she dies it’ll solver their problem. She then finds out she smashed her head and might have brain damage. Tasha, Eric, and Amy agree that if she has a little brain damage and it affects her memory that will be good. The next day they find out she’s in a coma and the doctors don’t know if she’ll survive. There’s a guy that got to her but he says he wasn’t the first one. It takes no time for Linda to accuse Amy of pushing Janine. Eric and Tasha quickly defend her and so do some of the other students. Amy is called into the office and Mrs. Noble shows her the note she wrote Janine to meet with her. The principal wants to know if when she meets with her when she got there, she was on the ground. Amy tells her the whole truth. (The principal doesn’t ask why they meet).
Later, Amy, Eric, and Tasha go to the hospital to bring Janine flowers, but she’s not allowed visitors. So, the clerk takes the flowers. They run into Dirk who’s there doing community service for driving his dad’s car too fast. IT’s either that or jail. They also run into Janine’s mother and the custodian (Mr. Nevins) who says he works there. He needs two jobs just to get by. In the next student council meeting, its announced the thefts are getting worse. Carrie says Janine has been moved to a private room, but she’s still in a coma. Simone, Carrie, and Amy talk about the rumors Janine was pushed. Simone says if anyone had a reason it was Amy but then she notices Simone has her bracelet back. Tasha and Amy also talk about Janine’s fall. Tasha heard she got hit in the head. She says a lot of people hate her. Then she gives a scenario about being alone with Janine when she does something evil and you just snap. She uses the word *you* but says she just means it in general not that it’s directed at Amy.
Amy goes back to the hospital out of guilt. Dirk is there again and almost hits her with his cart. Simone is in Janine’s room. Amy explains that maybe if she talks to Janine it will bring her out of her coma. Simone isn’t wearing her bracelet. She says she’s not allowed at school. She tries to talk some sense into an unconscious Janine but is interrupted by her mother. Amy tries to explain why she’s there but her mother starts to scream and says her feeding tube’s out. The nurse comes in and says its ok. They caught it in time. Linda accuses Amy of trying to kill her. Janine’s mother throws her out and says that if she sees her near her daughter again, she’ll have her arrested. Tasha and Amy talk about what happened in the hospital. Tasha’s already heard about it. Tasha says that she can talk to her about anything. She says she’d certainly understand why she’d try to hurt Janine. Amy runs off leaving her behind. Everyone is giving her looks all day. Even the teachers. She avoids people all day. The custodian even gives her scowls. Later, Amy accuses Tasha of telling everyone and they start to argue. She again runs home (after school).
At home, Amy realizes when she hears a message her mom left and more of the conversation, she’s having with Dr. Hopkins because she didn’t hang the phone up correctly that must have been what happened. She didn’t hang up the phone when she called Janine and she overheard their conversation. Then she gets another muffled message that Amy is going to get the electric chair or (and) end up DEAD! Amy runs up to her room and makes a list of all the people who hate Janine. She tries to call Carrie and Laine but they’re both “in the shower”. Amy confronts Linda the next day and finds out another person she’s blackmailing is Christy. She doesn’t know what for tho. Linda has a big mouth. Linda scared out of her mind runs out of the room. She doesn’t come back to home room. Amy is called to the principal’s office again and before she gets there, she hears the custodian tell Dirk to watch it.
In the office is Linda, Amy’s mom, a psychologist, and police. There’s been a official complaint made. The police are there to question her and the psychologist is there to give her an evaluation. Nancy says she wants her lawyer before they do any questioning. The principal says Amy’s not expelled but it’s best she goes home for the day. She’s not passing judgement but the other students will. At home, Amy tells her what she found out about the cell phone. The lawyer doesn’t call back and Nancy decides to go to the hospital to talk to Mrs. Bryant. While her mother speaks to her in private, Amy overhears the nurses say that if Janine comes out of the coma, she basically be a vegetable (no mental or physical capabilities).
Amy notices Simone with a magazine cart. She questions why she was pushing the same cart the last time she saw her there. Janine’s in a comma and can’t read. Simone tells her it’s the rule. They have to go into every patient’s room. Amy then questions how she got the bracelet back. Simone’s eyes are full of fear. Amy then walks away from her to check on Janine. Janine’s door opens and a cart with towels and sheets comes barreling at her. The person runs into the stairwell, but she sees the bald head. She sees that Janine’s face is covered with a pillow. The Dr rushes in and starts yelling CODE BLUE Amy starts to chase after Drik and then she tackles him. She sits on his back and holds his wrist. Dirk says the man she’s looking for is in the supply closet. A man runs out and Amy jumps him. It’s Mr. Nevins. Dirk says he was always lurking around Janine’s room. Amy asks if he did. The custodian says it’s none of her business but finally he admits he was being blackmailed. He was the one stealing the supplies. He says he pushed her down the stairs, took out her feeding tube, and smothered her to shut her up for good. The police appear guns drawn and he’s heard his confession.
He tries to say he just said it so Amy wouldn’t rip his leg off, but the guard says she doesn’t weigh enough. His leg is broken so they have to take him out on a stretcher. Janine’s mother is still accusing Amy. She finds out Janine is head. After this, Amy tells Tasha that Simone got her bracelet back by going through Janine’s bag in the hospital.
My Thoughts This just felt too “easy” of a solution. There’s a black mailer and all of a sudden from out of no where someone just kills them off. Riiight! Janine was never my favorite character still it caught me by surprise that she got written off because she was one of the main characters. I’m not even sure if she’ll be missed because all she did was cause interruptions in the chapters with drama. But I admit the mystery of who was stealing the school supplies and who was behind all the black mailing was good. I think the best part for me was when Janine told Amy she knew what she was. Talk about something I really did not see coming. But I would have liked to see another way of taking Janine down without such a predictable solution.
Rating: 7 The title of this one didn’t make sense to me. I don’t know why I was under the impression that it was going to relate to Amy still being sick. Maybe I thought that from reading a previous book and where they always have a snippet from the the next book after. Maybe they meant Janine was cold as ice or put on ice.

This book is the reason I started to read. I picked this at the library when I was nine because we had to read something at school. It took me forever to finish this as it might have been the first "real" book I ever read. After this I read the whole series and no turning back then. So I am really grateful to this particular series for excisting. Thank you!!!
The last few books in the series have been a little disappointing, but this one was a total home run!
This time in Amy's chaotic life, her secret is out! Her arch-nemesis Jeanine somehow knows her true identity. With the future of the world at stake, Amy tries to find a way to stop Jeanine from exposing her, discovering many dark secrets along the way.
Mystery, thrills, action, this book had it all. Not far into the book, something happens to a character that sparks something of a whodunit mystery for Amy. This is amped up when all signs keep pointing back to her, creating a serious race to find out the truth. Things even got a little violent in certain scenes, which I actually enjoyed because there wasn't a wholesome way out of the predicament like usual. I liked seeing that side of Amy.
The characters as usual were great. Jeanine really took the spotlight in this one, and if you hated her before just wait until you read this one. This girl is evil! Amy is continuously backed into a corner with all of these accusations, and some of her relationships are put to the test. It added a nice amount of drama throughout.
I can't say much about the conclusion of this book, but I can say that it's a pretty big climax that is really entertaining and a little darker than usual. This is an installment I won't forget anytime soon.
Marilyn Kaye does it again. Perry Mason has nothing on her. "Who done it?" What was it that was done? You have to reevaluate the characters, and people you thought you knew. Talk about suspects, motives, accessibility, and technology. And you think Amy is innocent? The series just keeps getting better. Even the cover art is chilling.
I can't believe that Jeanine was just killed off like that! I read some of these books as a kid and I was always a little baffled by how intense they got. Also it's so wild to me that at this point in the series she is still 12 and in less than a year has seen like 6 people die. Thats a rough year haha. I love that these books don't mess around and get right to the plot.

Htjela sam se derati na svakoga i pretući ih. Također sam htjela znati što se događa. Ne vjerujem da se to dogodilo Jeanine. Previše je knjiga ostalo da je samo - nema.

This one really raised the stakes in Amy’s life. The mystery, the action, the climax — all really great and shockingly stands the test of time as a reread from my adult eyes. My only complaint? The story moves on too quickly from such a pivotal moment and major shake up at Parkside Middle.
