An apparently realistic look at life a thousand years ago in Spain. Martin sells his farm to escape personal failure and go to Compostela, only to be forced by a brutal knight to join his band of pilgrims. Bandits, sickness, and death haunt them as they trudge east day after day, and Martin copes and struggles but does not break.
