Seer Society #1

Mark of the Seer

Rate this book
CLARITY MILLER always thought of her life as semi-normal. She had friends that would do anything for her, a boyfriend that was madly in love with her, and a roof over her head that she shared with her aunt.

Everything seemed to be falling into place. That is, until the day she met Sam.

When Sam informs her that he’s her guardian angel and that she has been given the gifts of a Seer, her life starts spiraling out of control. She wants nothing to do with the spiritual realm.

All she wants is to have a normal life as a teenager, but when a tragedy occurs that causes the whole town of Garlandton to fall to its knees she realizes that she has a very important decision to make.

Should she embrace the life of a Seer?

I'm gonna round up from a 4.5 for this one! I think this may be one of my favorite angel books ever! I loved the fact that Clarity already had a love interest and that her romance wasn't with her guardian angel. Forbidden love is great and all but well, let's just say been there done that. This book is set in the south and I love that the author wrote the characters with a noticeable southern accent. The voices of these teens actually sounded like teens without being over the top dramatic. I also enjoyed the fact that Clarity wasn't even sure she believed in angels. She has been so mad at God for so long for the death of her parents that she doesn't even know if she believes in Him. While she struggles with her own faith she is thrown into a war between the angels and the demons and she has to decide quickly what her role in the war will be. (All of this happens without being preachy in any way.)

The characters in Mark of the Seer are great. They are gritty and definitely not perfect. They make lots of mistakes and act like real people, not perfect imaginary book characters. Clarity is loyal, witty, and a bit wild. Not quite as wild as her best friend Kora whom I loved. Kora has not had the easiest childhood and has had to take care of not only herself but also her alcoholic mother. The story doesn't go into Kora's past overly, the author gives you just enough information to understand why she is the way she is.

Boyfriend, Brenton is not only dreamy but also one of the sweetest book boyfriends ever. I love that the two of them have been friends forever before becoming "involved" and that they know each other so well. I also liked that there is no stress between them in the romance department. They love each other and they know it.

Sam the angel is also another wonderful character. He is supportive of Clarity even when she tries to deny his existence. He is loving in the way that you would expect a guardian angel to be. There is no romantic tension he is strictly doing his job as guardian angel.

The plot line is engaging and dramatic in all the right places. A story that holds your attention and keeps you turning the pages even when you know your favorite shows are on the dvr. A definite recommend for anyone who enjoys reading about angels versus demons. The fact that the Demons coerce humans to do the their bidding seemed more natural than Demons just running amuck and causing problems. As you can tell there wasn't much I didn't like about this book! Over all a fantastic read!

Just so you know: There is some "language", and mentions of teen drinking and "hooking up"

Meet Clarity Miller: Just your typical teenage girl enduring the ho-hum grind of high school and working a menial job in the tiny town of Garlandton. Raised by her aunt, A.C., of whom she rarely sees, life drags on as one perpetual loop until Clarity's world is rocked forever by an angel named Sam. Having received strange "tattoos" on her hands, and a heightened sense of looming evil, Clarity struggles with the knowledge that her life will never be the same.

Author Jenna Kay does a brilliant job with character development, dialogue and scene portrayal: From the snobbish antics of the too-cool-for-school Daria; the romantic interludes between Clarity and her boyfriend, Brenton; to the antics happening at high school parties and school dances, the pages took me back in time to a world I once knew called "High School". The author also paints a sobering scene at the high school dance through a nefarious character named Nick. The event is sure to hit home with those who have endured or are aware of the potential traumatic violence happening in today's school systems.

Through all the ups and downs in this young adult realm, Clarity has been chosen to be a Seer: one who has been gifted with deeper insight into the spiritual realm, and of whom is now responsible for warning others of the supernatural maelstrom swirling around them. Not only did I read the book - I felt the book. Jenna Kay hit the nail on the head. Mark of the Seer hits right on the mark.

Mark of the Seer is the first book in Jenna Kay's Seer Society series. It's a good young adult story featuring a 17 year old girl named Clarity. Despite wanting to get away from the small town she lives in, things are going well. Things suddenly change though, when she sees her guardian angel for the first time. Clarity finds out that she is a Seer – she is capable of seeing angels and demons. Things go downhill from here, and she is faced with things that no teenage girl should have to face. All she wants to do is have a normal life.

The characters in this book are great. Clarity is just a typical high school girl that most readers can relate to. Her and her friends do a lot of partying and things that they shouldn't, but I guess that makes it all the more realistic. My favorite character was Clarity's boyfriend Brenton. He is just the sweetest guy and reminds me so much of my husband back when we were in high school. I thought the relationship between Clarity and her guardian angel, Sam, was interesting. He is an attractive boy that seems to be her age, so I fully expected a romantic relationship to happen. Instead, she sees Sam as more of a brother.

I like the southern, small town setting. I live in a small town surrounded by cornfields and it seems like not many stories are told from areas like this. I have to admit though, I can see the use of the word 'ya' bothering some people. In some phrases, using 'ya' instead of 'you' seemed a little awkward to me.

Overall, I really liked this book. Romance is not the main focus in this book, but I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read YA paranormal romances.

This story begins with a young girl named Clare. Her parents have both died in a car accident and she now lives with her aunt. She has her boyfriend, Brenton who has been a friend of hers since they were young and have decided to take their friendship to the next level. Her best friend, Kora has just left a bad relationship and started a new one with Kevin. When the school year begins, she meets Sam whom she finds out later is her guardian angel. Her nightmares have become real and she wakes one morning to discover tattoos on her hands but doesn’t understand what they are and how they got there. Her nightmares become frequent and thanks to Sam, she is learning to understand them. What is she and why is evil looking for her? Clare can never have a peaceful night out it seems without demons following her and trying to take her soul. Will she survive from their constant attacks on her? This was a nice story to read.

Clarity lives in the town of Garlandton, a town that she can't wait to leave behind when she graduates high school. Although she dislikes the town, she is not unhappy, she has a boyfriend who she loves and adores (and he, her) and her friends, who know how to make her smile. Life is going okay...until Sam shows up.

Sam is like no other boy she has ever met and she is instantly drawn to him but not in a romantic way, it's something else, something almost spiritual. Whenever Clarity is around Sam she feels calm, safe and protected. There is just one problem ; Sam shows up in the most unusual places, one minute he is there, the next he isn't and Clarity, thinking that she is seeing things that are not there, begins to wonder, if she may just be going insane.

After Clarity finds herself in some strange and dangerous situations, Sam informs her that he is her guardian angel and that she is a Seer. Being a Seer puts Clarity's life in danger, as there are those, full of evil, who seek to destroy her. Is being a Seer what Clarity wants and if not can she run away from her destiny or will her destiny find her?

One of the first things that attracted me to Clarity was the cover, I thought it was very intriguing and when I found out that the book was about a Seer I was even more intrigued. I really enjoyed Clarity. It was well written and featured a storyline that I have not come across before. One of the things I really loved about this novel was the relationship that developed between Sam and Clarity, that of guardian angel and human.

Sometimes when you finish reading a novel, that's it. You don't think about it anymore but not with Clarity. After I had turned the final page, I had so many questions. Do I believe in guardian angels? Does everyone have one? There were times when I was reading Clarity, where I had to stop, go back and read the paragraph again, just because I could relate to what Clarity was thinking so well.

Not only did I enjoy the storyline, I also enjoyed how the novel got me thinking. To be able to get a reader thinking means that an author has done their job well and Jenna Kay has done just that. For anyone who enjoys reading about the supernatural or has ever questioned who they are or where their place is in the world, I think you will enjoy this book.

If you've followed me in some form for quite a while, you know that when it comes to YA paranormal I prefer them in a realistic world, and I prefer them with angels. My angel obsession gets the best of me every time. With Jenna Kay's Mark of the Seer, there is no exception. I love when an author manages to put a different twist on my favorite sub-genre of novels, and Kay does just that! Mark of the Seer is 270 pages of intrigue. It is filled with demons, angels, and Biblical Seers, humans who receive visions from God. Another fact that I like about this novel is that while religion is included it the novel, it doesn't mold into the realm of YA religious novels, because that is not what it is. It is a book in which the paranormal aspects revolve around religious concepts, such as Heaven, Hell, and angels. The angels in this novel are mainly guardian angels and their presence throughout the novel excited me. I only wished to see more of them, though it seems that will happen in an upcoming novel.

As for the characters, Clarity Miller is a great protagonist. She is portrayed as a normal, temperamental teenaged girl, who can be somewhat annoying at times, but not in a way that is superbly aversive. She is a character who has seen hardships and who you root for, even when you feel she is making a bad decision. Another thing that I liked about the novel was that it isn't a paranormal romance. There are definitely paranormal aspects to this novel, and there are definitely romantic aspects but they don't control the plot of the story. The author found a way to create an enjoyable novel without having to use the ever present teen girl falls for an angel (which don't get me wrong, I love... a lot), and without including a love triangle. Brenton, Clarity's boyfriend is sweet and lovable, her best friends are crazy but in a good way, and Nick is adorable.

At points, the dialect used in the novel became a bit bothersome for me, such as the use of "ya" instead of "you", but I must admit that the use of wording appeared for the appropriate characters and setting. All in all, Mark of the Seer was an really good book, and I look forward to the rest of the series. I recommend this to anyone who likes YA paranormal fiction, or anyone who is hoping to give the genre a try.

4 out of 5 stars!

What a fantastic read Mark of the Seer was!!

Clarity is just a normal teenager..... Or so she thought!! That was before the dreams and Sam, her Guardian Angel enter her life.

One of the things that I loved most about Mark of the Seer was that Clarity really struggled with the supernatural side of herself. In my opinion in some paranormal books the main protagonist seems to accept their gifts much too easily!! You know they wake up one morning and can do magic, or read peoples minds and it's like "Oh cool!! Look what I can do" But Clarity wasn't like that at all. She really struggled with it and fought against the changes that were happening to her!! She really wanted no part of it whatsoever!! And Jenna Kay did such an awesome job in getting that across to the reader!!

Another thing that I loved was that Clarity didn't fall head over heels in love with Sam!! Yes she loves him, but like she would a brother. He is her protector. He brings her calmness. And she already has a boyfriend, Brenton, that she is madly in love with.

The main 'bad guy' Nick does bad so well!! And the scene at the school dance had me begging him to stop!!... I can't really elaborate without giving the story away, but once you read it I'm sure you'll agree!!

So would I suggest that you read Mark of the Seer? Most definitely!! You should add this one to your TBR list!!

Today's review is on Mark of the Seer by Jenna Kay

Mark of the Seer is a unique tale of good vs. evil, or should I say God vs. Satan, as that is the overall premise of the book. And though I did like the book overall, I personally feel that it was a little flat. Yes the characters were believable and faced the temptations of most teenagers; alcohol, drugs, sex, unplanned pregnancy, etc, but I kept waiting for the excitement only to experience it at the end of the book.

Clarity Miller can't wait until she graduates from high school so she can get out of her "hick" hometown. Orphaned at the age of thirteen, she lives with her aunt and works as a cashier. She gets decent grades, has a great best friend, and is crazy about her boyfriend. What could go wrong?

Receiving a visit from her Guardian Angel; Sam, Clarity finds out that she has been given a "gift" from God. She has been given the "gift" of being a Seer. With this "gift", she will be able warn others when demons are wreaking havoc. But will she have the courage or the faith she needs to save her town? You'll have to read the book to find out.

As a debut, Mark of the Seer is off to a good start; if just a bit slow. The story line is well thought, the character development is decent, but the editing needs a bit more work. I look forward to seeing growth form Kay, as I think she is very close to the mark. (No pun intended)

This book was such a amazing read! The last 20% of it is what secured it with a 5 star rating from me! Mark of the Seer had great characters and an amazing plot! I really enjoyed the plot! There was action in it and it went at the right pace to keep me interested! I didn't agree with the amount of alcohol and the mention of smoking pot in this book though! The characters were a bit of a different story! Clarity Miller was the main character and there was something about her that annoyed me! I do have to say though that as the book progressed I did start to connect with Clarity more and by the end of the book I loved her! She went through a lot in this book and at the end I felt so sorry for her for what Nick did! Sam was Clarity's Guardian and he was perfect! I liked that he was there for Clarity and that he protected her! Brenton was Clarity's boyfriend and I really liked him! He was also there for Clarity! I honestly thought that there was going to be a love triangle in this book but to me it didn't feel like there was one at all which I loved! Kora was Clarity's best friend and I loved her! Her personality was brilliant and she was very funny! The ending was full of action! I read it so quickly because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next! I am really looking forward to seeing where the next book in this series goes and I love the cover! Big thank you to Jenna for providing me with a copy of Mark of the Seer!

This book started off slow but when it picked up it grabbed me and didn’t let go. I can not wait for the next book to see what happens next with Clarity.

Clarity is just your normal average 17 year old teenager. Who has a boyfriend she loves and great friends. Until one day she see’s a beautiful boy but he is not what he seems. Clarity’s life starts to turn upside down and she doesn’t know if she is loosing her mind or if the things she is seeing are real.

From seeing Angels and Demons to strange marking on her hands that only she can see. Clarity’s life will never be the same. Than fate steps in and Clarity needs to pick if she accepts her life as a Seer or not.

Jenna puts a new twist on the fight between Good versus Evil. She writes her characters flawed but it only adds to them. We get just enough back story on them all that leaves you wanting more of this world Jenna has created.

Review: A fantastic read! Clarity Miller is a normal southern teen with your typical life until things begin to happen that are way beyond her control… or are they? She soon learns that she’s far more special than she ever thought she could be. When a strange guy appears out of nowhere and turns her world upside down by revealing things she never would have guessed on her own. Clarity soon learns she’s a seer, a link between the guardian angles and the people they strive to protect.
Talk about a log of responsibility! Clarity finds herself trying to help those in danger by the demons that would destroy their lives. “Mark of the Seer,” is both a wonderful teen read and a spiritual journey. I definitely recommend Jenna Kay’s wonderful novel and plan to look for more of her works in the near future!

It took me awhile to get into this book and just about when I was about to stop reading it started getting good. Clarity is your typical teenager, or so it seems. She actually has a lot more going on for herself than most, but doesn't see it. Then one day she spots this beautiful boy outside her classroom and a calm washes over her as never before. She has a wonderful boyfriend named Brenton, who I'm sure every girl wishes they had, great friends, and her future holds so much. Then one night her world changes forever, or does it? This is something that only she can decide. How will she choose? Do yourself a favor, get a copy of this book and find out.

Clarity was such an awesome story about the battle between the natural and supernatural realm. The ultimate battle between good and evil. I think Jenna Kay did a wonderful job describing this battle and how this would affect a normal every day teenager. Clarity is a character that I believe every teenager can identify with in there every day struggles.

Loved this angel story, not like the ones I have read lately. It definitely has a focus on life as a teenager in a backwoods small town, lots of partying, drinking, and other shenanigans teens get into. It gave for a more authentic, realistic story. You get into Clarity’s head and she is very likeable. I found that her feelings were well written when it came to decisions in her life.

Now that being said, Sam the guardian angel, he felt like the most real guardian angel I could think of. He was kind, strong, powerful, had a logical point of view. He didn’t seem overwritten nor did his power overtake the storyline. I admired Clarity and Sam’s relationship and the direction it took.
Clarity’s love Brenton was a sweetheart, my favorite of the male characters. He was grounded, had a strong sense of family and was truly Clarity’s one and only. I appreciated that she had only one love interest and the love triangle thing was a non-issue here. That can get tedious in YA novels.

Overall, a very interesting storyline, funny, intense, and kept me reading to see what happened next. Definitely not what I expected form an angel/demon story, but in a very good way. Very original plotting and world building to describe the supernatural world. I can’t wait to see what is in story for Clarity in the next book.

I did enjoy the book, but it was a little lacking. I did enjoy the over seeing guardian angels.

May 3, 2018-May 5, 2018

Addendum to my first review as I just finished reading the book for the second time. Clarity is a young girl, a senior in high school, and she is about to get the biggest shock of her life. On the first day of school she sees a “hawt” boy who smells of lavender that seems to slows time in her classroom doorway, and then the nightmares begin. From there her eyes have been opened to things most others can’t see in the world, angels and demons. Life altering events have Clarity believing that she might not be strong enough to be a seer and that God should choose someone else, that she should just lead a normal life. She couldn’t have been more wrong. Reading this book again gave me a whole new appreciation for this story, and kept me on the edge of my seat.

It was definitely a good read!
I did read many angel books but this one was captured my interest for sure.
Clarity - carefree, stubborn, full of life girl encounters something that makes her life shattered..makes her rethink what she has seen around in her life again...
Now she begin's questioning herself whether heaven n hell, evil and good, angels and demons ...she has never thought are real?
Can she accept what she is ..or will it be too late before she understands the gravity of it!
I knew that clare is a stubborn character but i loved her journey from it confused to determined..hell she made mistakes but she also tries to rectify it and sam ..wow...i loved the character(Is it Lavenders that i am smelling now?:P)..!Hmmm.will go for 4.5!
Did i say I love that cover? It's awesome..now if only i can get my hands on that sequel!

Captivating story telling by Jenna Kay draws you into a world of angels and demons. Suspenseful and sweet, the story of Clarity, her guardian angel Sam, best friend Kora, and boyfriend Brenton will take you for a spin beyond the normality of teenage life.

As if dealing with the loss of her parents, holding down a full time job, going school, juggling her social life, and preparing for college wasn't enough, Clarity now has a whole new secret life. She's a Seer.

Able to see into the celestial world makes Clarity a target for demons. Fearing loosing the normal life she dreams of, Clarity shuns her gift and the mission handed to her by Heaven. Until one fateful night death and loss forces her to open her eyes and accept where she is needed.

Clarity is a wonderful book. The storyline of the main character is interesting. Seeing her go from her carefree life to questioning what she believes and how she wants her life to go.

Excellent writing from the author - creativity in creating scenes, descriptions of characters and Clarity's internal questioning - makes this book even easier to read and really paints a picture in your mind.

I cannot wait to see where Clarity goes next! I have the second book, Broken, and I'm sure it will be wonderful.

These books are already proving the author, Jenna Kay, is starting her career on the right foot.
