Ian Edginton

Edginton sees part of the key to his success coming from good relationships with artists, especially D'Israeli and Steve Yeowell as well as Steve Pugh and Mike Collins. He is best known for his steampunk/alternative history work (often with the artist D'Israeli) and is the co-creator of Scarlet Traces, a sequel to their adaptation of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. With 2000 AD we has written Leviathan, Stickleback and, with art by Steve Yeowell, The Red Seas as well as one-off serials such as American Gothic (2005).

His stories often have a torturous gestation. Scarlet Traces was an idea he had when first reading The War of the Worlds, its first few instalments appeared on Cool Beans website, before being serialised in the Judge Dredd Megazine. Also The Red Seas was initially going to be drawn by Phil Winslade and be the final release by Epic but Winslade was still tied up with Goddess and when ideas for replacement artists were rejected Epic was finally wound up - the series only re-emerging when Edginton was pitching ideas to Matt Smith at the start of his 2000 AD career.

With D'Israeli he has created a number of new series including Stickleback, a tale of a strange villain in an alternative Victorian London, and Gothic, which he describes as "Mary Shelley's Doc Savage". With Simon Davis he recently worked on a survival horror series, Stone Island, and he has also produced a comic version of the computer game Hellgate: London with Steve Pugh.

He is currently working on a dinosaurs and cowboys story called Sixgun Logic. Also as part of Top Cow's Pilot Season he has written an Angelus one-shot.

Batman fights Aliens again – this time in Gotham!

Ian Edginton and Staz Johnson’s crossover sequel to the surprisingly decent first book is also… surprisingly decent! Story-wise, the title and cover say it all: Batman tangles with Xenomorphs. It’s not the most cerebral of plots and it shouldn’t be. But the action scenes are well-done in that the fighting is imaginative and exciting and the art is suitably dynamic – I definitely wasn’t bored reading this.

It does go off the rails in the third act though once the stereotypical shady government person starts doing insanely stupid experimental things with the Aliens that’s just begging for trouble. As soon as I saw what Batman would be fighting - on an oil rig in the sea for some reason! – I knew this book was one issue too long.

Otherwise, while Batman/Aliens 2 isn’t the most intelligent or memorable of stories and easily has its fair share of cheese, it’s not a bad comic either – a mildly entertaining Batman outing that delivers on its premise!

Wow I didn't know how things could get worse after the first one. I was completely wrong 😱 It's a good thing Batman is around!
Once again great artwork, great storytelling and just an all-around great comic series! Although I did feel like the ending kind of left us on a cliffhanger. Perhaps there will be more in the future? Highly recommend this series.

Good cross genre story and very nice art. The Aliens are a perfect villain for any hero to confront. Recommended

definitely an exciting issue this one!
seeing some new breeds.. even tougher than before.. and Bats trying to get rid of them, all by himself, not wanting any help from Tim or Dick .. who's the tough guy, right ? ;)

Just kinda messy and bad. Kinda weird that contemporary surgeons are able to remove the embryos from hosts when that seems to be very difficult for future surgeons to do, as we don’t see it attempted until Alien: Resurrection and everyone treats implantation like a death sentence until then. And giving all the aliens traits of Batman’s rogues gallery is just eyeroll-inducing. Just have him fight some freaking aliens, man! Don’t overthink this.

This is the concluding party of the series - there is really nothing much more to add since both parts follow on pretty much where the other left off. This means you can sit down and read it straight through without even stopping. The writer and artist are the same for both books and so the continuity is perfect. A fun read for a sunny afternoon.

It was hilarious to me because why would Batman be in Aliens?

3/10:
This started off so freaking promising, introducing the Xenomorphs to Gotham City amidst all of Batman’s other adversaries, and genuinely putting the city at risk. But then they fumbled the story so miserably that it ruins almost everything good about this collection.

We get into some insanely weird genetic modification, somehow combining the DNA of the Xenomorphs into clones of iconic DC villains such as Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Joker, Mr. Freeze, and Killer Croc. Then we’ve got this weird symbiotic relationship between Catherine Fortune and a Xenomorph implanted within her 80 years prior? All I know is that these sci-fi aspects are glossed over in a way that doesn’t give enough to make me care about these villains. Batman killing all of them isn’t even a big deal, and quite frankly leaves no fun room for a continuation of these Batman/Alien crossover stories.

Batman/Aliens 1 (1997) was set in the jungles of South America.

Batman/Aliens 2 (2002) is set in Gotham.

I'm really glad I discovered this series. The aliens feel like they're a natural Batman enemy, like Killer Croc.

I will say I found some of the human/alien hybrids didn't make sense, but then again when did anything really make sense with the aliens from Aliens vs. Predator?

Batman vs. Aliens 2 has some familiar elements found in Batman vs. Aliens 1 but adds enough new elements to make it a fun read.

One little part was dated though. A character in the book mentioned weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Years later, we found out there were no weapons of mass destruction there.

This is the first time I am reading a crossover between a DC character and a science fiction monster like Alien.

This comic was better than I expected. I liked the flashbacks and the reveals in the third act though I guess quite a few people may have already got a sense of where the story was going.

I did find it difficult to follow what was happening in quite a few of the panels especially during the fights which was my biggest issue with this novel.

Overall, I enjoyed the book but I wasn't a fan of the artwork in many places.

The first Batman/Aliens story was a lot of fun and an imaginative use of both properties, but this one was enjoyable until the last issue where it sort of goes off the rails in terms of the conclusion and who the Bat actually ends up squaring off against. I would recommend this as a popcorn read for anyone who enjoys Batman, Aliens, and Lovecraft, who some of the backstory to this mini-series seems very indebted to. The ending left something to be desired, but otherwise, it is a fun read.

The beginning of it is somewhat OK. Artwork is nice, the atmosphere is good too thanks to the solid writing, nice colors and detailed artwork... The problem is, as usual with the Aliens, in the story. When comic writers don't know what to do, they just take popular old villains, combine them into a group and call it a thing. This comic does the same, only this time villains are merged with Aliens. Which makes it not only generic, but also ridiculous. So... yeah... even the atmosphere isn't at good at the final part of this comic. With some proper story this one had a chance. As is... nah.

Better than the first one, simply because it leans into the ridiculousness of the premise and transports the action from the jungle to Gotham City. There's a genuine sense of stakes -- a populated city could easily be overrun -- and the story does some fun stuff with genetic engineering involving Xenomorphs and Arkham inmates. Recommended as a light, fun read.

A surprisingly solid follow-up to the first series that goes absolutely off the rails in the third chapter. If the first series was Batman in a generic Aliens comic, this one is the aliens in a generic Batman comic.

Better than the first 1997 volume, but there either needed to be more of the and/or that part of the story needed to be fleshed out more. They seemed more human than alien, which was disappointing.

I kinda feel for the xenomorphs. Batman's right, they, like all life, just want to survive. The real enemy? People with agendas, people who adhere to a strict dogma, someone with a plan.

Aliens, through a convoluted sequence of events, are free in Gotham. Batman and the GCPD stand in their way. What happens next is... unexpected. A straightforward 'us vs them' showdown turns super weird and all too, ironically, comic booky! Some bitch shows up and the story looses all its momentum.

A great Batman and familiar Aliens unite for a good story initially. The strange turn and the rushed ending is a huge disappointment and makes me think of missed opportunities.

The whole thing is a tad ludicrous but I think that was the point. Mixing two of my favorite characters alone is enough to earn three stars. There are a few great scenes, though.
