Published in a limited academic edition of 270 copies. The purpose of this volume is to foreground and problematize the "Third" in the context of identity (the "Same") and difference (the "Other"). The tissue of the Third never ceases to grow through sameness and alterity. Reified as presence, as the Other of the Other, gaze, friendship, memory, partner, judge, etc. or dissimulated as difference, synthesis, conflict, absence, context or void, the Third inhabits the between of binarity. The realm where the Same (I, for instance) and the Other confront still another Other - the Third Other - poses questions of diverse ethical, cultural, historical, ideological, mythological, mystical, discursive, narrative, theoretical, etc. This volume is an attempt not so much to answer as to expand and perhaps refine some of those questions and to explore the elusive - sometimes irrational, sometimes ineffable - realm of Thirdness.
