I was born in New Britain, Connecticut, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. I also spent a year (5th grade) in Montgomery, Alabama, and a year in Ann Arbor, Michigan(8th grade). As a child, I always wanted to be a writer, but I had lots of other ambitions too. I wanted to be a teacher, a librarian, a movie star, the president of the United States, and a ballerina.

I didn't achieve all my goals. I never became a movie star, the president of the U.S., or a ballerina. But I've been a teacher and a librarian and most of all, a writer. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always kept a diary. I wrote poems, stories, plays, songs and lots of letters. Writing wasn't easy for me, but it felt natural and right.

I've always read a lot, too. I was an English major at Emory University (I love Shakespeare), and I also received a master's degree in library science at Emory. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago, and I taught children's and teen literature at St. John's University in New York for over 20 years. Now, I'm a full-time writer, living in Paris, France - the most beautiful city in the world.

Replica-sarjan höpötiede on riemastuttavaa!

One of the less realistic stories in the series. It is interesting though, how in Amy's mind, both her problems as a clone and her social status in school are of the same importance.

Replica-sarjan "Salaseura" on genreltään ikään kuin Mean Girls meets X-Men -sekoitus. Eli sopivan pörrö yhdistelmä teinidraamaa ja yliluonnollisia voimia. Kirjasarjan yleisen eheän pääjuonen kannalta tarina on kuitenkin irrallinen ja siksi vähän tylsä, mutta silti viihdyttävä.

This was definitely one of the more far-fetched stories in this series. I really hope the events towards the end either get brought back up or explained throughout the series. I have been having so much fun re-reading these.

Secret Clique
Tasha complains that their school is too predictable (boring). Then she goes through the school’s daily routines. She says it would be nice if something different would happen every once and a while. Amy has to admit she’s right about Parkside. Announcements are made and one in particular makes Jeanine excited.about a new ninth grade treasurer (Lori Kesler). Linda looks annoyed by her reaction. Amy finds out from Linda, Laurie is in that clique. Amy knows it’s a clique of ninth graders. Only a few seventh and eighth-graders are allowed. Jeanine is apart of it and has dumped Linda. Amy wants to tell Linda she’s better off, but that might actually lead to them being friends. Then she’d have to reveal her secret.

We find out from Tasha the members are Blair Cavangh (a cheerleader) and Kristy Diamond (a runner-up for Mrs. Young America). Tracey Bell is another member. She’s in Amy’s seventh-grade French class (because she failed twice). Amy is Tracey’s conversation partner. She briefly mentions being tired from a sleepover thrown by Melissa Mitchell who was in a car accident and now is back in school. All throughout the day, the other students are talking about her too. Amy sees Melissa first hand when she speaks to Eric who knows her from another teammate she dated last year. Amy doesn’t think she’s lived up to all the hype. As, she, Eric, his friend Kyle, and Tasha are headed home, Amy (hears or sees) a car coming toard Mellisa. Kyle grabs her arm and pulls her out of the way. (Just before he’d been admiring her but Eric tells him she’s out of his league). The car plows into a tree and bursts into flames.

Amy races toward the car to save the man, but he’s already out of the car. An ambulance and police car arrive. Melissa is hysterical. They all agree it was weird how the car started again and hit the tree. Tracey notices how fast Amy moved but she says it was just adrenaline. Melissa is now looking at Kyle “with shining eyes” and calls him her hero. The police ask if anyone saw what happened. Amy says the car sweverd, The girls just stpped on the curb at the wrong time. Then she tells them about how it didn’t make any sense for it to hit the tree. The police says it might just be he hit the accelerator or maybe faulty wiring. The police give them a ride to Amy’s. Nancy’s mom freaks out when she sees the police car. Amy tells her the story and she calms down a little.

Melissa doesn’t appear to be so bad. She encourages Kyel’s (weak) game and blames the ball. She also tells him he doesn’t have to listen to her ex (who she hates because he broke up with her while she was in the hospital). For a moment tho there’s hostility in her eyes. She also blames the head cheerleader who she says intimidates the other cheerleaders. Kyle invites her out after the next game to have ice cream with them. Amy tells Eric it was nice that he also said the ball was soft, but he says the ball really was. Weirdly it wasn’t before they started playing.

Parkside wins the game. Kyle has the last shot and Amy calculates he’s going to miss the basket by a mile, but it goes cleanily in. Melissa says he must have had a lucky angel. Amy thinks about how they went bowling after the game later at Tasha’s. Kyle and Melissa didn’t show up. She made a mistake and shattered a pin not judging her own strength. The talk turns to the new couple and Spence says Melissa can be possessive. They went out three times and now she’s making it look like he dumped her as soon as she went to the hospital. They talk about at least she’s good for Kyle’s game, but Spence says it’s just strange. Tasha and Amy go to the mall. It turns out Kyle was hanging out with Melissa’s friends the day before. When they go to hear the girl’s choir sing the lead they find singer of the choir has choked on a mushroom (Marcy Pringle). So Kristy had to take her place. She can’t sing for a while. Melissa even laughs about it. Eric said previously Kyle would be playing ball with him, but just as Melissa says he shows up. He says he was going to but Melissa called. Amy tells him he ought to remember just because he has a new friend to keep the old ones (in a song she remembers). They decide that Eric is going to be pissed so they head to the bakery to buy him some cookies. Amy pushes Tasha out of the way as the metal scaffolding falls down. As she looks back she sees Melissa and Kyle watching her. Melissa is laughing. Amy has to make up an excuse as to why she has bags full of sweets. She says she was the one millionth customer and since they both walked in at the same time it was a tie. When they get back, Eric tells them he’s been getting weird hang-up calls all afternoon (and he’s mad about being stood up).

The next day at school, Eric sees Kyle hanging with Melissa’s clique. When he reminds Kyle about practice Melissa also reminds him he’s supposed to fix her stereo. He tells Eric he’ll come to practice and then he’ll fix the stereo after. Amy finds out Marcy had to drop out of choir. Tasha says Kristen was the best singer. Seconds later Tasha trips going down the stairs and the clique is laughing at her. At lunch, Spence is looking for Sarah that was supposed to meet him and didn’t show up. Amy and Tasha talk about how Jeanine was trying to ask Melissa something and she and she make her look like a fool. Then they talk about how the the new treasure took money from some of the clubs. She lip reads Melissa says to Lori she’ll show her how to do it tonight. Tasha trips again and spills chocolate milk on herself. Her shoelaces again have come untied. Again when they look at the clique, they’re laughing. It’s verified in class from Tracey, that Kristy hates Tasha.

The paramedics arrive and take someone out on a stretch (Kelly Marcus the head cheerleader). Tracey is happy now a clique member will be over the squad (Blair). In French class, the test they’re supposed to take go missing. Spence comes to practice late and tells the team Sarah is missing and he’s being questioned. Kyle comes in late and gives off a lot of attitude. Spence tries to throw him off the team, but Kyle says he doesn’t think so. Spence walks off canceling practice. Eric tries to talk to Kyle but he just blows him off. The next day, Amy hears Tracey and Melissa talking about a meeting. She notices Jeanine isn’t with them. The article about the Lori and the others stealing money isn’t there. Instead, there’s a welcome back story about Melissa. Now Spence is missing too. Then Jeanine goes missing. Word is all three “ran away”. Mr. Devon shows up after a meeting at the school. He hints she needs to find out more about the clique.

Eric is now also getting weird notes to mind his own business. So that night he goes to Kyle’s house. But he sees at least five shadows in Kyle’s room. So he just leaves. Despite not wanting to get involved, Amy lets Eric convince her. They find out that the editor didn’t even want to put Melissa’s picture in the paper but “some space became available”.Amy has the opportunity to get closer to Tracey when warnings are about to go out and there’s an oral quiz. Tracey says she knows a better way. Amy sees Tracey looking up at a loose light fixture. It falls on the teacher. Tracey makes light of it, but the teacher will be in the hospital 3 weeks. Tracey says she got an idea from Amy about someone breaking into the computers how she’ll never have to worry about any of her grades and she’s going to talk to Melissa about it. She invites Amy to the mall with her and Kristy. Melissa (and Kristy) aren’t happy with Amy being there but Amy makes (at least) Melissa warm to her by saying she’ll talk to Eric about letting Kyle making her own friends and letting them know she has secrets he doesn’t know about. They say they have secrets too and even though she’s been with them in the record store, clothes store, and cosmetic counter, they produce items she didn’t see them take (and couldn’t have possibly taken).

They finally invite her to “a party”.They start mentioning events Amy doesn’t understand. Kyle says he’s practiced for the game. Kristy says Jay’s asked her out so it's undecided if they’ll do anything to do anything to Dori. But then they start talking about making Eric disappear. Kyle speaks up and says he doesn’t want them to do anything to Kyle. Melissa agrees they won’t touch Eric but Kyle and Amy have to let him go. Then they explain to Amy that they “can make things happen”. Melissa says she got this “gift” from something radio-active she got in the hospital. Now all she has to do is think of something and it happens. Melissa taught Tracey (and the rest). Melissa can even “move people”. She doesn’t know where she moved the missing ones to. Their biggest problem is controlling their powers. They want to try combining their energies and invite Amy to help them eliminate a bunch of nerds. They’ll give them a fake letter, invite them to the gym for a photo, and then make them all vanish. Melissa comes by and shee shows Amy first hand her powers of moving things. But she tells her she can’t take part in the mission. Eric comes by and Melissa tells her to break up with him. She finds out Tasha is one of the “outstanding students” that will be photographed. Since Amy told the clique they aren’t friends anymore she can’t say anything to Melissa. The photographer is late so Amy tells Melissa she’ll tell them to wait another 15 minutes. Instead she tells them to leave. Amy tells Melissa she called the others and tells them the plans changed. Melissa then aims at Tasha but Amy knocks her out the way. She goes after both of them, but Eric knocks her down. Melissa tries to bring the bleachers over so they’ll crush all of them. So, Amy tries to use her strength. It’s a little much but then there’s the sound of music (which breaks Melissa’s concentration). Someone comes in and slips an oxygen mask on Melissa and carries her out. It’s Mr. Devon. He says the radio active (stuff?) in her brain will be handled. Then leaves. Tasha says she’ll never complain about school being boring again. All the students come back (confused). Jeanine says she was in the forest walking and she was living off nuts aberries.

My Thoughts
This REALLY did not make any sense. I was trying not to get my hopes up but I was getting excited. I was thinking oh this is good. They’re going to be witches. They can do all this stuff because they’ve been practicing SPELLS and Melissa is the leader. So I waited for iit even though this book is more leaning toward science fiction and not supernaturual. Could happen. Could have switched paths. I’ve always had a fascination with magic so I didn’t mind going in this direction but the explanation was so rushed. Melissa got her powers from being exposed to radiation stuff? Okaaay. My uncle works with toxic and radiation stuff and to my knowledge he’s never moved stuff with his mind ior made stuff vanish somewhere unknown for days at a time. Tho, I’m sure there are some *uh things* he’d love to be able to make vanish *sometimes*. But as I’m thinking of this book, For some reason this episode of “That’s So Raven” just popped in my head (and I’m looking at it). So if y ou don’t know the show it’s on Disney. Raven (Symone) is a pychic and has all these visions (That don’t always happen how she sees them). So briefly the spidode is about Raven missing the winning shot at a volley ball game because she has a vision. There’s a girl in the crowed named Carlie and she introduces her to a bunch of other kids that have mental gits like teleconsis, cooking things with their minds, etc and she starts to feel like she belongs more with them. Maybe what I connected to this story was their hang out was in a science lab. This story TRIED to relate teleconisis to science. The episode tried to connected mental powers to science. I just II guess my mind just really wanted it to be about magic.

Rating: 8 I liked it. It kept me anxious up until the end. The ending just.. I don’t know. Actually, the end wasn’t horrible but the iffy explanation of the powers could have been better.

This book was excellent! I'm really glad since I didn't love the last two, but this definitely makes up for that.

Alright, so this time Amy is enjoying a respite from being hunted down. She's really grateful for the change of pace, but there's something weird about this clique of ninth graders at school. Anyone who says anything mean about them or outperforms them seems to be punished by unforeseen consequences, but it has to be a coincidence, doesn't it? Is there more happening here than meets the eye?

A lot of things made this book awesome.

For starters, I loved the change of pace in this one. Most of the books so far have had Amy front and center, but this one was more subtle. It was nice to see a different focus here.

There was a really nice element of mystery that had me guessing for the most part of the novel. I had my suspicions, and while they were right, the book made it hard for me to figure out and I loved that. The buildup was paced very well, and once things come to a head it was a thrilling roller coaster ride.

Amy is enjoying the calm of the present for a change, so it takes a lot for her to get involved in this seemingly ordinary crisis. I could completely understand her viewpoint, but in the end she showed plenty of character and goodwill, yet another reason for kiddos to look up to this MC. I also really enjoyed the development between her and Eric.

The ninth graders were really awful, especially Melissa. Their role as antagonists were really great.

Honestly, I have zero complaints. This book was thrilling from beginning to end, and I can't wait to read the next book!

This was one of the “standalone” books in the series that didn’t require so much backstory, but for me that’s what made it feel a bit disjointed from the previous books.

The mystery itself was fun. Rereading it after so many years, piecing it together made the pace of the book soar — I was turning the pages so quickly.

Boo! I really wanted the “clique” to be witches! It seemed to all be aligning to some sort of 90s coven type group, but then it veered into Secret World of Alex Mack sci-fi. That wasn’t a bad shift — witches just felt like it would make more sense — it made the end fall a bit flat as a result.

All in all, these books feel like you are watching a weekly tv series, so this particular book felt like a “filler” episode that gave us a larger view into Amy’s world at large. I did like that a lot.

Amy watches her French Teacher Lighten up.

This book is more complete than the others. So far each of the previous books relied on knowledge of the book before it in the series. This one can stand alone.

Amy is the focal point in the investigation of the disappearance of several students. However, the mystery surrounds a girl that recently returns to school and resumes her position as head of a Secret Clique.

Even if you can guess what is happening, following Amy throughout the process is well worth the read.

What would you do if you were Amy? It is a mind-bending experience that will keep you under the bleachers.

You can totally notice that Replica was written in late 90s/early 00s. I still enjoy these as quick in-between reads, but I didn't find Secret Clique as entertaining as the previous books. Feels like it just focused on background characters too much and only brought teenage drama. I want the evil guys back!

2.75 stars. I had read most of the books in this series in middle school and was interested in reading some of the books I couldn’t find as a child. This particular story didn’t really grab me or keep my attention like some of the others have, even re-reading them as an adult.

Secret Clique by Marilyn Kaye is a fantastic book. I choose this book because my friend recommended it to me. It takes place at Parkside Middle School where a lot of strange things happen. The most popular girl, Melissa, returns to school after recovering from a terrible accident and the strangest things start to happen. Kids start to disappear and no one knows why. Amy thinks it has something to do with Melissa's return and she does everything to find out how and why her friends have disappeared. I really liked this book because it shows that even being popular has its flaws. In this book being popular is a life or death situation. I liked the author's writing style because the book was narrated by Amy and her thoughts make the book a lot more interesting. My favorite quote is "Then she remembered her mission and forced herself to smile." This quote was said by Amy and I really liked it because it shows that she will do anything to find her friends and it is her mission. I would recommend this book to anyone that thinks being popular is important because this will show them that it actully isn't.

School can be tough. Cliques can run a school and ruin the lives they really don't like. Melissa has returned to school after recovering from a terrible accident and of course everyone is happy she survived and taken her place as the queen of the "it" clique. But when everything starts coming up roses for the clique and their enemies start disappearing, Amy tries to join the group to find out what is happening.

This series is fun and can take you back to the days when being popular seemed like a life or death issue. In this one, it looks like it just might be. More experimenting on kids leads to disasterous conclusions. I wonder if we will see Melissa again.

A girl comes back from a car accident after six months with sudden telekinesis, which she teaches to her group of cool kids. They make people they don't like 'disappear.' Amy solves the mystery and saves a bunch of 'nerds,' including Tasha, from mass disappearance. Melissa is then taken away by Mr Devon's people.

This is the first time Amy tells Eric she loves him. Whether or not he heard her is not clear.
