Frost
Last time Nell went into the mist she rescued her sister. This time she’ll have to go farther than the Elven forest, farther than the frozen wastes beyond and onto a lake of primal ice so treacherous she’ll be lucky to return at all.
It’s the New Year, Woodbridge School is closed and the country is snowed in. While the blizzards rage and Nell’s mum works double shifts, their house is full of Gwen’s friends permanently crashing out on every bed and sofa. The Elven world is frozen, too. It’s deep in snow and ice storms are ravaging the forest. Worst of all the massive Harps that keep the Elven land twisted out of sight are falling silent. No music, no land.
Can Nell and Evan cross the deadly frozen lake that surrounds their land, and fight through freezing blizzards? And if they do reach the Harp will they be able to overcome the two enemies waiting for them - Loki and Laki Winter? They are feared Ice Elven, a race so secretive that most young Elven think they’re myths used to scare them into being good. The scheming Winter twins are all too real, though, and they’ll stop at nothing to make sure the Harps stay silent.

She's worked with gypsy and traveller children, working from a converted bus with a rainbow on the side, doing video and photography projects, and documenting travelling lives.

I honestly never thought I’d say this, but Frost is even better than Mist. The stakes are higher, the romance is more intense (although still appropriate for MG readers), and the action is far more exciting.
After spending two months far north, trying to open the iron camps and release their elders, Evan had to return to help the other Elven children, but he is not the lighthearted boy he once was. Watching his parents and hundreds of other Elven waste away in the iron camps changed him, made him mistrustful of all humans, including Nell. During those two months, Nell tried to go back to her usual, everyday life, but a part of her remained with the Elven and especially with Evan. When Star comes to her for help, terrified and panicky, Nell is ready to do anything to save Evan’s world.
She saw shadows start to move on his face, like last time when he’d told her about his family in the iron camp. This time, as he’d told her how cold they’d become, and how they’d walked for days, hardly sleeping, snow formed on his eyelashes and frost on his face.
The harps that are keeping the Elven world alive are slowly going quiet. Without them, there will be no more forest behind the mist, no place the Elven kids can call their own. They would be forced to come to the human world, where they would surely be hunted down by the Watchers and forced into iron camps. There are no adults they can turn to, only Nell and Evan.
This time, the sweetest almost-couple had more than just prejudice and fear to fight – they had to join forces against the cold-hearted ice Elven. A brother and a sister, Loki and Laki, showed up in Nell’s little town and turned Nell’s older sister and her friends into mindless servants. While immune to their powers, Nell was still desperate to protect her sister Gwen.
In Frost, the world around Evan and Nell expanded even more and Kathryn James was really able to let her imagination run wild. When she combined that with her beautiful writing, what resulted was a book that was rich and magical, gentle and more satisfying than any fairy tale.
Nell was even more fierce and daring in this book, and rightfully so. She did achieve the impossible last time after all. Evan, while wounded and traumatized, still kept showing his sweet side, especially around Nell.
All the loose ends were tied in Frost so I don’t think there’ll be another book, but I can hope, right? For someone who doesn’t even read Middle Grade, I’m enjoying this series more than I can put into words.

Frost is a refreshing fantasy novel, one that I found myself immensely enjoying despite the fact that I don't really read middle grade. The fantasy world that Kathryn James has created in this series is intriguing and detailed, and the character development was great in this novel too.
It's winter time and that brings more trouble to Nell and her family. I'd add friends in that too, but she clearly tries to stay away from the group her sister Gwen hangs out with. Winter brings a pair of Ice Elven, Loki and Laki, to the area. They're very different from Forest Elven like Evan, and start stirring up trouble immediately. On top of that, the Harps in the Elven world are dying, which means the world itself is dying too. And Nell discovers that she and Evan are the only ones who can save it. So they venture out into the glacial world of the Ice Elven and its many obstacles in order to get the Mother Harp working again.
Nell's as spunky and courageous as ever, maybe even more so in this book. I love her character! How can you not? It's impossible not to love her. She's defiant and stubborn and incredibly smart, which for a thirteen-year-old is pretty damn awesome. I liked how loyal she is to the Elven throughout, that she never gives up on trying to save them.
Evan is of course extremely lovable too. He's sweet and adorable and it was cute to see the developing romance between him and Nell. Evan and Nell are pretty much inseparable, and they're as close as two people who've been best friends for years. They always stick up for each other and even though they go through a couple of rough patches, they end up best friends as always.
I also really liked the new characters - Loki and Laki. The similarity of their names is pretty hilarious! But they're definitely a dangerous duo. At least, they seem like it. Laki really wants to make friends with Nell, and she's quite bubbly. I was torn between a liking and a mistrust of her. Loki, on the other hand, is clearly on the bad side. He doesn't hesitate to make things difficult for Nell and Evan, but I ended up really liking him in the end.
Like I've mentioned, the world building in this novel is fantastic, and I could totally picture the different surroundings and the situations Nell got herself into. Everything wraps up really nicely in the end, so I guess there won't be another book in the series. Which is a shame, because it's so well developed! I'd love to see more of this. Overall, Frost is a fun and adventurous read, and I'd recommend this to all YA and MG fantasy lovers.

It was just as good as the first book, it had me at the edge of my seat almost the whole time and it was truly wonderful.
I love the characters and their snarky comments, and also how good the elven world is described with such ease that you can just picture it.
To sum it up, I really like these two books and will be reading them again in the future.

I love this mini series written by Kathryn James I could not put either book without a good reason not too. From the dreamy fronts covers to all of beautiful descriptions of the elfin world I can not praise The Mist series enough.
I love reading the interactions between each of the characters so well described you can imagine each character is sitting right next to you at the time. I really wish Kathryn James would continue with another book in series with more adventures of Nell and Evan perhaps as they grow older in their own words. I look for more books by this author soon meanwhile I read Mist again from the beginning.

Frost introduces us to the Ice Elven and specifically Loki and his sister Laki. Whilst Loki is busy causing mayhem, trying to stop Nell and Evan from reaching their destination, his sister Loki is enjoying the human world and making friends with Nell.
Nell's character follows through. She is determined and even when the quest is not going well she doesn't give up and stands up to the old gods and the faction that have split away. In Frost she really comes into her own power by facing her fears and and her dreams.
Nell and Evan's emotions are exactly how it would be with their YA age group - Nell intuiting from their communications where she stands with Evan and the chasm between them. The romance is secondary though with the quest taking prominence.
Meeting the gods and their human emotions on the ice has Kathryn James' unique creativity as has the feast in the Ice Elven hall. It's the characters that bring these scenes alive.
The quest to get to the Mother Harp is a page turner. With much to overcome, our leads had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I loved how they had to play the new world into being.
The excitement doesn't have a chance to calm down before there is one more thing they have to do for the Forest Elven. Once again, modern technology is used with such impact :)
Mist and Frost have taken me on a fabulous magical adventure. I've loved how the author uses mythology and brings it into the contemporary world.
YA readers will identify with the romance and the excitement. Definitely one to add to your reading lists for adults and YA readers alike.

Just as good as the first one. We get more of a perspective of the elvin folk and where they live. It was easy to get straight back into the series and carried on beautifully from the first book. The characters progressed brilliantly and new personalities were introduced. At the start, I did get confused between Loki and Laki but found them an excellent addition to the story. The detail was perfectly written, creating a rather vivid image in my mind.
Nell and Evan are so cute!! The ending was bitter sweet but sadly I don't think there is going to be any more books in the series. It ended perfectly, leaving some things to the imagination but telling you what you needed to know. I would have liked to meet Evans parents and get to know his sister on a more personal level instead of Evan telling stories of her. Altogether a fab sequel to Mist and a must-read book :)

Next book on from Mist and enjoyed this one as much as the first one. Very happy it continued off from the first book and is again, very easy to read. I was hocked on thins one just as much as the first.

Love how Kathryn has written these books! Frost is a perfect sequel to Mist. The story flows perfectly from the first book and I can confidently say its just as good as the first. There's more romance, action, suspense and the ending is the icing on the cake every story needs.

And just when I thought Mist was a good read, the follow-up novel wowed me a little bit more.
The story picks up some time after the events in Mist. Nell's sister, Gwen, is safe, but something is different with her. Gwen keeps on doodling an Elven's face on her notebook, someone she can't forget, Fen. Evan's bid to free the Elven from the iron camps in Siberia has changed him, but the real danger arrived faster than Nell expected. The Harps in the Elven land are dying, and along with it comes a deadly, seemingly endless Winter and the emergence of the Ice Elven. Nell must once again go into the Mist, her mission a little deadlier than the last time, and this time she's the only hope of the Elven world's survival.
It was so nice to read of the old Nell once more. She's still a figure on the fringes of her sister's clique but unlike before, she doesn't wonder why it's like that. Nell has accepted she's different, and that's not exactly a bad thing. Despite of her panic attacks, Nell still had that spunk in her that I loved reading of in Mist. One of the things that irritated me in this book though, is how Evan was after his stay in Siberia. I know it must be hard and very frustrating, to have something you want to get to be so close and yet you can't do anything to get it. But is giving Nell the cold shoulder helping him achieve his goal of saving his parents and younger sister? It felt unfair, considering how Nell helped the Elven in the previous book.
Kathryn James amped the action up one big notch in Frost. The way the story flows is just something that will make you want to stick throughout Nell's adventure and never put the book down until you find out how it all ends. What was lacking in Mist, that something that will make the readers feel that there's really a threat in the Elven world, is palpable in Frost. The emergence of the Ice Elven, Loki and Laki, of two intriguing characters which will make one's perception of them change in a blink is definitely a plus in the story. Are they a friend? A foe? I'm still wary of them, but they both proved to be another great addition to the world of the Fay.
Though Mist had it's predictably in a lot of the scenes, Frost sure took my breath away with some unexpected turn of events that Kathryn James added in the story. The introduction of the Vanir in the story, the way Evan and Nell races against time to save a dying world while tackling distractions from both the Elven and the humans, all of that contributed to Frost being such a great read. I enjoyed reading Frost a whole more than I did reading Mist, not just because of the great flow of the story, but because Nell, even Evan, and the rest of character has grown up, became a little bit wiser, stronger, braver and had more courage to face the dangers the world has in store for them. I loved how despite going through tough challenges and trials, of wanting to give up at times but pushing on no matter how big the odds are against them, there were moments between Evan and Nell that just made me feel how innocent they still both are and their budding feeling for each other certainly made me feel like they were still teens starting to discover amazing things like love, and first kiss amidst all of the dangers they're in.
Loose ends tied neatly together, conflicts resolved, budding romances established, families united, a world saved, what more can you ask for? Kathryn James did a great job in wrapping up Nell and Evan's tale as well as that of the Elven world. I wish there was more! I wouldn't mind diving back into this magical, mystical world Kathryn has created one more time. Maybe a Fen and Gwen spin-off? Because Gwen had a spunkiness inside of her that I wouldn't mind reading about. Or maybe a short story about Loki, how despite being an Ice Elven, where everyone thinks you are heartless, you are still capable of caring for things and people that matter to you. Reading the Mist series has proved to be an enjoyable experience. Recommended for younger teens, and those who are older but want to experience the magic of being in a new fantasy world, this series is for you!

After thoroughly enjoying Mist last year, I was more than eager to delve back into another adventure with Nell and Evan. Much like it's predecessor, Frost is a beautifully told, fun, and enchanting story of a girl who has found her way into the mysterious land that keeps the Elven that are still free hidden. The rest of the Elven population, sadly, is being held in iron camps by a human group who fear that the Elven will take over if given their freedom. This time around, the stakes have been raised and the danger amped up tenfold, as Nell and Evan work to not only free the captive Elven, but save the entire Elven world from dying out.
Frost introduces a few new characters to the mix. The Ice Elven, who are creepy and cold-hearted enough to strike fear even into the hearts of Evan and the other forest Elven, were a complicated bunch and added a sometimes fun and sometimes frightening twist to the whole story. They are mischievous and roudy and when we see them all together they reminded me of a band of vikings. Laki was a favorite of mine, even though she kept me guessing though the entire story. The Vanir, the Elven gods, were also new to the scene---some of them welcome, some of them not so much. One in particular that just made my skin crawl.
Nell and Evan were just as much of a joy to read as last time around. Their relationship is so cute and funny and flirtatious. They saw their share of problems this time around, as he fights to keep her out of danger and she fights to be in the midst of it, she refuses to stand by helpless. They find out that it's a journey they have to make together and this brings them both farther apart and much closer together.
As I said with Mist, this reads almost like a middle grade book with a light bit of romance thrown in, but it's a perfect fit for the story. It's a great fantasy adventure full of wonderful creatures, dangerous challenges, and heroic triumphs! There were times when I had some issues with the dialogue being a bit choppy and felt overly immature for the characters (including an awkward over-use of people telling each other to "shut up"), but overall, nothing that took away from my enjoyment of this book.
Sadly, I think this is it for this series! I definitely would have enjoyed more time with these characters. But things wrapped up nicely and I especially loved the last chapter.
I definitely recommend both Mist and Frost!

Nell and Evan were just as much of a joy to read as last time around. Their relationship is so cute and funny and flirtatious. They saw their share of problems this time around, as he fights to keep her out of danger and she fights to be in the midst of it, she refuses to stand by helpless. They find out that it's a journey they have to make together and this brings them both farther apart and much closer together.
As I said with Mist, this reads almost like a middle grade book with a light bit of romance thrown in, but it's a perfect fit for the story. It's a great fantasy adventure full of wonderful creatures, dangerous challenges, and heroic triumphs! There were times when I had some issues with the dialogue being a bit choppy and felt overly immature for the characters (including an awkward over-use of people telling each other to "shut up"), but overall, nothing that took away from my enjoyment of this book.
Sadly, I think this is it for this series! I definitely would have enjoyed more time with these characters. But things wrapped up nicely and I especially loved the last chapter.
I definitely recommend both Mist and Frost!

A continuação deste livro não é exatamente uma continuação, gostaria de chamar de uma nova aventura, porém com os mesmos personagens do livro anterior. Falo isso porque aqui o clima não é de uma continuação e sim, outra aventura que teve elementos ligados ao problema anterior. Mas isso não quer dizer que a história saiu do rumo ou a nova ideia tenha sido estranha/diferente, elas se complementam.
Os personagens, principalmente a protagonista, tiveram uma grande evolução. Antes ela era uma menina perdida e sem saber o que fazer, aqui, ela dominou a história e se mostrou um personagem de grande valor, enfrentando os obstáculos e não deixando de abater por qualquer coisa. Lembrando que este livro é infanto-juvenil e isso é o grande mote da história para os pequenos – vá atrás das coisas que sonha, deseja, etc. Pode ser meio clichê falar disso, mas é bom saber que os personagens passam por esses momentos e acabam nos incentivando a seguir em frente.
Há novos personagens, ligados ao tema ‘gelo’ e foram personagens interessantes e diferentes de antes, principalmente os irmãos Laki e Loki, sempre que eles estão presentes há de tudo um pouco; momentos insanos, coisas divertidas, tiradas engraçadinhas, ação e novas explicações sobre os elfos.
O enredo se manteve o mesmo do anterior, buscar/ajudar algo e/ou alguém, mas ele foi mais bem trabalhado, mais desenvolvido e um pouco mais interessante. Em alguns momentos a gente percebe que saiu da coisa ‘infanto’ e se encaminhando mais para o ‘juvenil’. A história teve uma melhora (termos gerais) significativa. Foi bom ver as coisas se desenrolando e evoluindo.
O final ficou um pouquinho em aberto, mas acredito que a história já tenha chegado ao fim. Vale lembrar que os protagonistas têm na faixa de 14 anos, por isso, a autora poderia fazer mil outras aventuras envolvendo uma humana e um elfo, mas sinto que a história se fechou aqui e caso fique se estendendo, a gente vai começar a se sentir enrolado.

I read Mist just after Christmas and really enjoyed it, and was pleased when I realised how close this book was in release. I requested for the library to buy this book for me straight away and it actually came in quite quickly.
Frost carries on pretty much where Mist left off. Nell can't stay away from the Elven world no matter what her parents say. Gwen should have forgotten but something is pulling her memories back. Evan has left on a mission and a Blizzard has descended.
Nell gets called back through the Mist to help the Elven, the Mother Harp that keeps their world alive has stopped humming and they need help to start it again before the whole world collapses.
I got back into the world really easily when I started to read Frost and enjoyed being a part of the mystery again. I read it quite quickly, it's easy to read and sweeps you through, the chapters are quite short and the plot exciting.
I didn't find this one quite as good as the first, a slight spark was missing, but it was still very good. There are some new characters in this book - the Ice Elven, in particular twins Loki and Laki. Not quite sure whether the are totally good or bad they make a good addition. I didn't like Loki much and didn't trust him but he did make an interesting 'bad guy'.

Wow.... so many feelings.
This book has captivated my heart. T__T
I didn't expect it to be better than the first book since it was so good, but this one is even better.
Even though the main characters were very young, I still had fun reading about them and just going on this journey with them was magical.
Nell was so ordinary and special at the same time. I admired her courage and all she does to save people she haven't even met.
Evan was adorable. I was displeased by how how mistrusted her in the beginning, but I guess everyone in his position would.
Loki and Laki were my favorite two people since the moment they appeared in the story. They made a huge difference in the story line. Laki just wanted to do "girl stuff" and Loki, I guess he had an idea about how they were better than humans until he met actual humans.
The only thing I didn't like at all was the display of power Nell showed at the end when she made her mother forget and clean the dishes herself.
The author is simply an amazing person with an incredible imagination and wonderful writing skills.
I wish she would write 94893743948938484 sequels. This book is one of my favorites. I will never forget the feelings I had while I was reading.

I loved Mist, so I was really looking forward to Frost. And I wasn’t disappointed, while this book wasn’t quite as good as Mist it was still a great adventure with plenty of exciting moments. Nell and Evan are such lovely characters. It was so nice to read a book were there was a really sweet innocent romance happening that wasn’t over powering the story.
The new appearance of the Ice Elven was interesting seeing how different there are from the Forest Elven. The ice twins Loki and Laki where interesting characters that added some fun to the book. And the chapter where we first meet the Elven Gods the Vanir was so spooky; I really wasn’t expecting it from Frost.
There were a few cheesy moments towards the end of the book to wrap up the story, but that was Ok since it was all in aid of a happy ending. Over all this was a great tale and a sweet finish to the books. While I would be more than happy to go on another adventure with Nell and Evan I think that this was there last story, so glad it finished the way it did.

'Frost' asks Kathryn James to recapture the magic of her first book and in my opinion the sequel unusually eclipses 'Mist'.
In 'Frost' Nell and her human friends are at risk from the Elven again as the Thorn siblings, Loki and Laki, are in town ready to cause trouble. Unfortunately, they have ice where their hearts should be and do not care whose lives they destroy.
Whilst this is happening Nell is called to help the Forest Elven save their world and this means teaming up with an old friend! Nell has to gather her courage once again and walk back into the mist.
In 'Frost' Nell has retained some of her innocence which reminds the reader of her age, but she is a stronger character, due to her experiences in 'Mist'. I love the way in which she does not let Loki absorb her into his world, although she is charmed by Laki because of her own loneliness. I can imagine being friends with a girl like Nell because of her kindness, openness and courage.
Kathryn James is successful in tying all threads together in 'Frost', although I would love to read a third book!!

I was trying to find time to read this book for quite some time and finally here I am having read the book, it was more than I expected. Without a doubt it was better than the first one and yaaaay we get some progress between Nell and Evan. Happy days but I'm not going to reveal anything else.
So this time we get to see the cold and ruthless ICE ELVEN whose hearts have stopped beating, so are they really as dangerous as the Forest Elven make them out to be?
And well with the harps dying, isn't it time all the Elven start to work together to stop their world from dying. So Nell goes on another journey to save the Eleven world

This was a much anticipated follow-up to Mist. Myself and a lot of my students were waiting eagerly for it and I think its safe to say that we were all a little bit disappointed. Perhaps it was due to the way the characters had developed but although the plot was equally as exciting I didn't feel as engaged with this sequel. I think I may have wanted it to be more than it was. Still a very good read for KS3 girls and definitely recommended if you like to read series. I'll be interested to see if a third title comes out and what it is like.

I picked this book out from the school library. I was just scrolling along the selves when i saw the cover of the book. The name FROST just gave me goosebumps from head to toe which made me want to read it.
My favourite character in the book would be Nell the strong confident weird girl. The thing i liked about her was that she was the complete opposite to her older sister Gwen, who was queen b , popular, party animal, stacked with boys you get the picture.
Basically this book is about one mysterious strange boy

I absolutely adored both these books (Mist and Frost), the characters are enchanting and the storyline captivating :-)
A wonderful tale where the Elven world meets the human one and the issues and problems that arise from that along with all the usual problems a teenage girl has to deal with oh and don't forget having to save the Elven world from dying as well!
Whether you are young, old or in between you will love these stories.

I loved this book as much as the first! Frost wastes no time getting back into the action bringing you back to the world you learned to love in Mist. It ties up all the loose ends greatly and the ending was perfect. I especially love how Nell is still true to herself and while she has inevitably changed it is for the better.

This book is good but it did disappoint me if I compare it to the first book, or maybe it was because I read it on my iphone but I didn't feel any action or thrill. But what i was most disappointed at was the lack of romance, maybe it isn't meant to be a book about love but I wish it'd have had more feeling and gesture and words between Evan and Nell. And also, I felt like it was too short.

A good book...I've read the first book and i really enjoyed that book however this book wasn't as good.
It was still great but i think the story line wasn't as good. I would say that the book advanced too quickly and there wasn't enough detail. It was still an amazing book and I recommend it however it isn't my favorite book.

Somehow it was so much better than the first. Amazing book and this short duology was a great read. 10/10 I'll definitely be rereading in the future. There are a number of loveable characters who are not in the least bit annoying and the story never stops progressing, there were no unnecessary filler chapters or plots. Overall very very enjoyable.

I wast too keen on Mist, giving it three stars, but Frost is by far the best book I've ever read. I didn't even put it down for a drink or toilet break. Every moment drew me in further. Every character is incredible and every scene was action packed. I truly have no more words. Perfect.
