**MINOR SPOILERS**
This book is part of the Tornian series. Some of the characters from the other books in the series are mentioned or appear. Wray and Grim are brothers and Grim is the MMC in the first book in the series, though most of the events in this book precede Grim’s story. I recommend reading Grim’s book first.
I have read all of the other books in the series, and I was not looking forward to this one. Partly because Wray is about twice Kiim’s age. Partly because Kim was r*ped and I was not looking forward to the story line.
Wray comes from a part of the universe that has a severe shortage of females. It has upended their society and females control relationships. Males are the warriors and Wray is the emperor over several planets. When he is returning from a neighboring system, he discovers a ship that should not have been there. Upon boarding the ship, he finds slave traders. In addition, he finds Kim near death.
Kim has been repeatedly r*ped and injured as the Ganglians (the slave traders) get pleasure from other people’s pain. Note: the r*pes are mentioned, not on page. Wray oversees the immediate healing of the some of her injuries and then leaves for his spaceship so a more comprehensive healing can take place. Unfortunately, his shuttle crashes on an unpopulated planet because of an attack.
It gives Wray and Kim an opportunity to get to know each other and Wray decides that he will not tell Kim that he is an emperor. He wants to find out if she would like him anyway. They fall in love over a few days. Wray is very sweet and protective towards Kim. A few of the things he says to her are very touching. In return, she begins to care for him and to show it to him. This is something he is not used to as he comes from a very messed up society.
Kim likes Wray’s protectiveness. At times, it felt as if it were a reaction to the trauma rather than solely about who Wray was. Kim frequently tears up during the book. This was completely natural after having been through her abduction and r*pe. Wray is very patient with her and believes that she is brave for surviving what happened. I thought their relationship could have had a bit more to it than getting over what happened to her though I appreciated that she wasn’t over it in a day.
The author mentions at least once that Wray is typically very controlled. However, he is quite emotional and angry at several points in the book.
Kim alternates between being fearful and being confident and confrontational. The author mentions several times that Kim was spoiled as a kid and spoke rudely to her parents and older sister. You can see it in the way that she interacts with some people though she is aware of what she is doing and tries to be better.
The book alternates between Wray and Kim’s point of view with a few scenes from the point of view of others.
I liked the scenes told from the point of view of Wray’s son (who is 17 while Kim is 19). He had an interesting storyline.
Note: the reason the Ganglians were on Earth was not explained though I assume it was to gather slaves.
I liked the series and wished the author had written more books in it. This was not my favorite book of the series. I read the entire series and recommend it.
