Book one in the Kane series tells of one family’s struggle for peace in an ever changing world. From Amanda the matriarch, who killed for her freedom and that of her unborn child. To Raven her son, and the descendants who fought for generations to keep the family together. Bloody times filled with murder and intrigue. From slaves to organized crime, this is the beginning of the Black Mob. Author Bobby Dennis will take you into the lives of one of the world’s most dangerous crime families. From the start of their Bloodline to the Succession of their descendants, these series of chronicled books will “Pull you back in, every time you try to get out.” This is the Black Mafioso.
This book so far has surprised me tremendously. First off if I hadn't snagged a free copy I would have likely never read it, not my genre at all. It's about a black/native american family in the deep south from pre civil war up to current day (I assume, it is now 1958 where I am). At first I found the very graphic nature (both violence and sexuality) difficult to handle but it settled down a bit, it is also in need of some more editing. I would have to say that in so many ways it has nothing going for it that should keep me reading, that said, I can't put the damn thing down!
First if all a disclaimer, all I know about the background of the time and setting of The Bloodline of a Kane is what I have learned from Movies and broad history, I am neither black or even American (Canadian) so I can't speak to any faults this book may have as far as an accurate portrayal of the subject matter, personally I don't care, if you can convince me that it could have happened then I can suspend disbelief and that was achieved.
Mr. Dennis has a way of wording and flowing dialogue and pacing his story so that you just have to keep going. He generates interest in the characters, action and understanding of their motivations. So far Bloodline of a Kane is like a beautiful woman without her makeup on. It does need some touch up to be fully appreciated by all readers but it doesn't have far to go.
The Author, Bobby R. Dennis Jr. has a very interesting Bio which I just read at His Publishers website
Not sure if I will read his next book but I wouldn't be surprised if curiousity will get the best of me and I'll end up getting it.
Star Rating Determination First Impressions 3 -Has potential to improve as it goes along
Spelling/Grammar/Punctiation (No Bearing on Story) 3 -Couple of Stumbles but not much flow loss Story 4 -Fantastic Read
This book started off with a lot of build up. Half way thru, the book lost on the plot. It is painfully stretched and plethora of characters left me confused. I might be harsh, but most of the scenes remind me of The Godfather. Proper editing would have made the plot racy. Author seems to have a fixation for pillowy breasts, wide and flaring hips
If historical fiction with a vivid nostalgic touch appeals to you THEN this is a WONDERFUL read. Everything that was LOST in our culture is STATED eloquently within these pages. This story is one of RESILIENCE..LOVE..VALOR and FAMILY..I can't wait to start Redemption
