Lord and Lady Smythe.
Just your average, everyday, boring members of the ton.
With the same average, everyday, boring problems.
Except for the part where they're each (unbeknownst to the other) spies for the British government, who end up vying for the same contract in order to win the prized spot on the intelligence team.
Which leads to all kinds of surprises for both parties.
So yes. This is a cliche, silly, over the top, Regency (is this Regency?) version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Complete with the meet-cute fight scene - during which Mr. Smythe learns what the term fight like a girl really means.
Turns out, there's a lot of pent-up sexual frustration between these two.
Whodathunkit?
Of course, for contrived reasons, they decide to work together despite their trust issues. And (after a rocky start) end up working everything out, catching the bad guy, and falling in love.
Duh!
Alright. If you're looking for a historically accurate romance, look elsewhere. This is just fluff with some fertility & misscarriage issues thrown in for good measure.
But this was just what I happened to be looking for, so none of it bothered me at all. In fact, I had so much fun reading this I've already got the rest of the books in this series on hold already.

4 ½ stars – Historical/Regency Romance
I’d never read anything by this author previously, but the premise and racy cover had me very intrigued indeed. I mean a Regency Mr. and Mrs. Smith?! I couldn’t wait!
I’m happy to report that this lived up to my expectations. It’s an entertaining, sexy, adventurous spy romp with a dynamic H/H and an energetic mix of fun, action, drama, snappy dialogue, witty banter, and emotional, steamy romance.
Lord and Lady Smythe might be married, but years of secrets, lies, and emotional disappointments have estranged their relationship and left their union little more than a pretense. This suits their purposes fine since unbeknownst to each other, they’ve been masquerading for years as top spies for the crown. But when they find out each other’s identity and are forced to work together? Sparks and bullets fly and the Smythe’s discover that falling for one’s spouse might be the most dangerous mission of all.
It’s a satisfying, enjoyable read...4 ½ stars!

An entertaining and fun read that I could not put down!
So Adrian SMYTHE is...
OF COURSE I IMAGINED HIM AS A FINE STRAPPING HISTORICAL BRAD PITT BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT???
HE WAS HOT. I LOVED HIM. I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS. also have i mentioned how much i fucking love the name adrian???
And of course, here is Sophia SMYTHE

And their interactions with each other!
“What are you doing?”
He grinned. “What does it look like?”
“I’m trying to have a discussion.”
“You want to have an argument, and I would rather kiss you.”
Lol they were so much fun to read!!!
This was a story of a couple super disconnected because they each have lives of their own and have avoided attachments to each other, and found each other again, in the most unexpected way. Now I don't care that this is the most unrealistic story ever, honestly I loved the spy element and would read it again. I will definitely be reading the next one in the series!
Now back to the romance. This was well paced, and the characters were both competent, no-nonsense types who got the point across. There was no dancing around. They both knew what they wanted and although they had their respective fears, got through them together because that's where they operated best. I love how honest they became with each other, and that it was a slow and steady falling in love with someone they were already in love with, but just didn’t know it. I love how both Adrian and Sophia were questioning their roles in life and striving to be more, both to each other and to the world. They were a little lost at the beginning, even though they had a purpose in life (espionage) but had gaping holes as well, that only each other could fill.
I won't say more except this conversation was one of my faves! It showed their vulnerabilities with each other, don't read unless you wanna spoiler!
It was real, and not fluff. While I don't mind a smutty sexfest, I definitely prefer a traditional slow build up romance! I loved how they communicated well with each other. Sophie told him the reason why it was so difficult to trust him, and didn’t beat around the book. I really appreciated that! It seems I’ve read too many books where they keep a secret and it doesn’t come out until the end, and by that point I don’t care. This really kept me on my toes because their relationship was slowly progressing! There is no abrupt “I love you” It’s a wonderful build up with the right amount of dialogue and feels and steaminess inbetween!
Also, Seeing them put their respective skills together to work was awesome

Well, when I saw the premise of this book months ago I was really excited about it. A Regency Mr and Mrs Smith? Sign me up! Now, did Ms Galen deliver a smart, snappy, sexy adventure? Yes, yes and yes!
Lord Adrian Smythe is devastated when he is told he is to retire from his spy life in the Barbican group. After all, he has just delivered one of their most sought after criminals but he grudgingly accepts his new life--that of being a true husband and leading a normal, boring life. When just a few days into his 'retirement' he receives a missive from his former boss, Adrian is thrilled and relieved. But the surprise he receives upon arriving at the meeting throws his entire life into a tailspin.
Lady Sophia Smythe has perfected her life as a mousy, quiet lady while the entire time living her own double life as a spy in the Barbican group, following in the footsteps of her father and brother. She is furious when her last capture is intercepted by a mystery man and she looses the credit for the capture. And then to add insult to injury, she is told her services are no longer needed. She loathes the idea of being just a wife and when she also receives a missive for a mysterious midnight meeting, Sophia is quite relieved. She arrives early and when she hears someone coming, she attacks. She quickly realizes the man is also quite skilled in fighting and she is floored when she realizes who the man is. Her husband, Adrian. Naturally, as these two discover just who the other truly is, sparks fly, tempers explode and the need to outsmart the other is all too clear.
Together, Sophia and Adrian are presented with one more task, to find a murderer of the prime ministers brother and why. But there is one small catch...only one will be permitted back into the Barbican group. This forces the two to constantly be on their toes, always trying to be one step ahead of the other but they gradually realize that working together might not be so bad.
This was truly a delightful romance adventure full of some of the funniest dialogue between a hero and heroine that I have enjoyed in awhile but somehow still, the story was sexy and moving at the same time. Adrian and Sophia married out of duty but have never truly disliked each other, they just have not really know the other and they have had to overcome a truly heartbreaking situation that leads them to be more at odds with each other. I loved watching Adrian protect Sophia whenever something came up in their search for the murderer that affected her on this personal level, very swoonworthy :) Sophia tucks this show of emotions inside her to examine more closely later. Also during their search, Sophia is finally able to present herself as her true self and it helps take some of the blinders off of Adrian and leads to some very hot scenes! Once again, Adrian is beyond understanding in this area and when he finally confesses his true feelings to Sophia, sighworthy! My only small complaint about this book is there was no epilogue! I really felt like it needed one as a few threads were left dangling but maybe will we see this adventurous couple again in the future someday? I hope so because I feel like they have more stories to tell! If you are looking for a fact paced, sexy, smart adventure with a feisty, bold heroine and a hero who wants to protect her at all costs, many of them on a deeper level as the heroine is totally capable of taking care of herself physically, grab the newest from Shana Galen! You won't be disappointed! 5 stars

This book was such a disappointment to me. The plot could have been really wonderful--I would love to read a good book about a couple driven apart by multiple miscarriages and her unwillingness to put herself through that again. I'm sure that was something that happened a lot (and still does) and should have created a powerful emotional plot without any farfetched story line.
And while a bit too cute, the idea of a husband and wife discovering they were both being spies for the same group without realizing it could have been fun.
But she didn't think it through at all. Why would a woman who was trying to look like a mindless society woman, feel the need to dress unattractively? if she felt that need, why would she then dress seductively to go to a midnight spying assignment? And would a husband and wife who are both stunned by realizing what their spouse has been up to immediately move to fighting about who was better and competing? wouldn't there have been a stage or two inbetween?
These don't count as spoilers--they all probalby arose in the first 20 or 30 pages. The book just gets worse and worse from there.

Lord Adrian Smythe hides an exciting occupation behind his seemingly boring facade of English lord, that of an English spy.
Except, guess what? His wife has been outsmarting him for years. She's a spy herself *Oh, my!* Alas, both are unaware of this little secret they are determined to hide from each other. That is until they get involved in the same case and all masks are off.
To be brutally honest, the real mystery to me is how these two ever managed to not get each other killed. You've probably read books that are awful enough to be laughable. Well, all this one succeeded in evoking from me were yawns and maybe a few tears of frustration.
I think my time would have been better spent watching Mr.&Mrs. Smith which had way less melodrama and better action scenes.

This has taken me over a week to read, which perhaps speaks volumes. It was all a bit of a chore. Not enough to hold my attention, not bad enough for me to give up without knowing what was going to happen. This book is not aimed at me. I much prefer my romances true to the time in which they are set with a nicely developed couple at their centre and minimum dramaz. This was not like that [how did it end up on my 'Want To Read' shelf? she wonders]. Two Regency spies with secret identities who use the word 'operative' and are given a mission by the Prime Minister (not a fake one, but everyone's favourite 19th century PM, except Melbourne and Disraeli, Lord Liverpool). I did much historical pearl clutching whilst reading this book. But, I get that Galen's main aim is not historical accuracy (the book is called Lord and Lady Spy and is a direct and unashamed lift of the terrible film Mr and Mrs Smith) so I'm willing to shelve some of my complaints on that score. The story ticked along fine and was reasonably paced. The action scenes were quite good. What's a little unforgivable for me is the poor romance at the centre. I felt nothing for Adrian and Sophia. It all seemed to be based on insta-lust, there was no brilliant character interaction and as a consequence the sex was pretty disappointing too. All in all, this was a very mediocre experience for me, 2.5 stars.

This book is a fun and seemingly fluffy Historical Romance Spy novel greatly inspired by the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. A core internal conflict centers on the couple attempting to cope with past miscarriages and present childlessness.
There's a particularly impactful scene in which the heroine, Sophia, interacts with a visibly pregnant acquaintance. Just seeing the pregnant friend viscerally triggers her grief, pain, and jealousy and it's an intense moment. Very well crafted and it hits hard.
At about a third of the way through the book I feel that even though the novel feels a little tonally disjointed at times, there's enough good here that I would return to read the book in the future. It's just not the book I need to be reading right now.

Oh, wow, wow, WOW!
I pacing back and forth to give this 4, 4 1/2 or 5 stars. But, because I really enjoy it 'till the end, I decide to give Lord and Lady Spy a lovely 5 stars! =)
Lord and Lady Spy is story about 2 retired agent who don't want retire at all! Agent Saint and Agent Wolf, both are capable agents of Barbican Group (maybe its like English Secret Service?). Then, they must accept the fact when their leader told them to retire and back to their old life. The war with Napoleon is over, what they can do? But little they know, that in fact they know each other!
Well, agent Wolf is Adrian Galloway, Lord Smythe (ha ha ha :P) and agent Saint is his wife, Sophia Galloway, Lady Smythe. Imagine their surprise when they know their real identity, when both agent receive a private mission from English Prime Minister. Adrian who always go out for all time, and had been shut out from his wife bedroom, never guess this fiery and witty woman as called Saint, is his -nerd, not appalling, always using glasses- wife. Nor with Sophia who adored Agent Wolf, that in reality, is her irritated and always on the go husband. But, this mission need both of them to investigated the prime minister's brother murder. And if they succeed, the Prime Minister promise to make one agent to work again for Barbican Group.
Just one, and who will have that position? While Sophia and Adrian work together for this case, they found that their spouse are not what they think to be. All that bitterness, sadness, feeling stranger for each other, distrust, slowly disappear with their effort to again recover their marriage. But,when the passion rose, they must remember, just one agent who will win the position on Barbican Group.

Lord and Lady Spy is my first book by Shana Galen. I admit, when it comes to historical romance, I always picky. I hate some aspect in HR which involved infidelity, abuse and forced seduction, that's why I choose any HR title carefully. Shana Galen is a new author for me, and when I see her newest release, Lord and Lady Spy, I'm intrigue. Lord and Lady Spy have a beautiful cover with a vibrant pink color. But, actually this book is about second chance. Adrian and Sophia's marriage had been train wreck. They're not love each other, nor they want to be separated. Sophia's miscarriage make her so sad, she desperately want her own child, even she failed for 3 times. What make she sadder, is the fact when she miscarriage, Adrian not there to support her. That's why its hard for Sophia to trust and love him, beside she still remember her brother horrible past, where he was betrayed by the woman he loved, and that woman is double agent. Adrian, who realized their mistake, will try so hard to win her, to make their marriage whole again.
The action is good, its fast paced, and this book have so many sexual tension scenes. One scene I will never forget when they have foreplay in the middle of the noon, near the window. How scandalized! (and their sex scene in the carriage is one of my favorite too ;))) But, what I love more are the interaction between Adrian and Sophia. Their method of work so different! Sophia who always follow her instinct, believe her intuition, and have a way to make people talk to her, against Adrian, who is practical, make a lot of planning, impatient, brute but have his own strength, which come in handy when the situation getting out of control. Its delightful to see them. From distrust to trust, from rival to partnership, from stranger to lover =)
For historical romance lovers who love action, romance, suspense which are package in one pack, I recommend to you to read Lord and Lady Spy! And I will happy if Ms Galen will write more about Adrian and Sophia in the future. =)
Oh, wow, wow, WOW!
I pacing back and forth to give this 4, 4 1/2 or 5 stars. But, because I really enjoy it 'till the end, I decide to give Lord and Lady Spy a lovely 5 stars! =)
Lord and Lady Spy is story about 2 retired agent who don't want retire at all! Agent Saint and Agent Wolf, both are capable agents of Barbican Group (maybe its like English Secret Service?). Then, they must accept the fact when their leader told them to retire and back to their old life. The war with Napoleon is over, what they can do? But little they know, that in fact they know each other!
Well, agent Wolf is Adrian Galloway, Lord Smythe (ha ha ha :P) and agent Saint is his wife, Sophia Galloway, Lady Smythe. Imagine their surprise when they know their real identity, when both agent receive a private mission from English Prime Minister. Adrian who always go out for all time, and had been shut out from his wife bedroom, never guess this fiery and witty woman as called Saint, is his -nerd, not appalling, always using glasses- wife. Nor with Sophia who adored Agent Wolf, that in reality, is her irritated and always on the go husband. But, this mission need both of them to investigated the prime minister's brother murder. And if they succeed, the Prime Minister promise to make one agent to work again for Barbican Group.
Just one, and who will have that position? While Sophia and Adrian work together for this case, they found that their spouse are not what they think to be. All that bitterness, sadness, feeling stranger for each other, distrust, slowly disappear with their effort to again recover their marriage. But,when the passion rose, they must remember, just one agent who will win the position on Barbican Group.

Lord and Lady Spy is my first book by Shana Galen. I admit, when it comes to historical romance, I always picky. I hate some aspect in HR which involved infidelity, abuse and forced seduction, that's why I choose any HR title carefully. Shana Galen is a new author for me, and when I see her newest release, Lord and Lady Spy, I'm intrigue. Lord and Lady Spy have a beautiful cover with a vibrant pink color. I have never seen the movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", because I don't care for the actors, so I don't know how closely the book follows the movie. But I did get a kick out of the similarities in the book cover and movie poster, and the fact that their last name was Smythe. Lord and Lady Smythe would have been a cute title, too.
I really liked the characters and their background. I wouldn't have minded if they hadn't discovered each other's identity for a longer period of time. I think there could have been some fun story lines if they hadn't found out so quickly. I loved the way they hid their real personalities from the world and each other. Adrian was overly polite and predictable to the point of being slightly boring, and Bridget had adopted a mousy, drab persona and appearance.
It made perfect sense for their marriage to be so distant because they had suffered through three miscarriages. It was written in a totally understandable way that this had destroyed their marriage and made them into strangers. I really liked their emotional growth as a couple but a lot of times I felt like it was cheapened by all of the physical growth. I was put off by how many cheesy 'love scenes' there were, and if not for over-doing this aspect, I think I would have loved the book.
I would have liked for Lord and Lady Smythe's relationship to be more developed aside from the physical, but otherwise, this was a fun Regency spin on "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."

I knew I was going to have to read this book with a grain of salt. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith plot actually sounded really cute to me, but it wasn't executed very well. Lots of details about how they kept their identities a secret from each were kind of glossed over.
The main thing that I didn't like about the book was that it was like repeatedly reading the same scenes. Scene 1: Compete against each other to investigate the new clue. Scene 2: Glaringly obviously scene showing that A & S would work best together, but they refuse to admit it. Scene 3: Make out and argue about having a baby. Repeat.
I forced myself to read to the 40% mark and them skimmed all the way to the end.

As many other reviewers have stated, this was a cute idea but poorly executed. Not only were the MCs completely immature, too much of their shared past was glossed over with sexual tension and innuendo that I failed to care about the character development that they underwent.
I do have give kudos to the author for writing a completely safe story.

This was great! Imagine, if you will, a Regency era Mr and Mrs Smith. Complete with gun and knife fights and a daring rescue!
This was face paced, I never felt like the story dragged. and the romance parts were just as great as the adventure part. My heart went out to both Adrian and Sophia for the losses they suffered that caused them to hide their true feelings. When they finally realized they could give into those feelings and be themselves, it was amazing.
This was my first book by Shana Galen, but won't be my last.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Were there some moments I really loved? Also yes. But I went in expecting Regency Mr & Mrs Smith, and it didn’t quite capture the ~energy~ of what I love about the movie. So I found myself only moderately engaged, and ended up skimming the last few chapters.

She made me care for the hero and heroine, although at times I wanted to shake each of them and scream "fall in love already!", and loudly boo the villains trying to kill Adrian and Sophia. My adrenaline spiked, my heart raced, my shoulders shook with laughter and my eyes glinted with unshed tears for Sophia and Adrian's loss (I couldn't just fall apart in front of random strangers at Starbucks now, could I?). If this had been made into a movie, it would have gotten a rousing stand of ovation at the end. Well done, Ms. Galen.

Built along the lines of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we have two spys, married to one another, 1800's style. Andrian and Sophia have been married for years, but have both been spys even longer, only problem is neither one of them know that about the other. But due to old Bony being captured and sent off to exile...sorta...England needs to downsize their spies. Don't let the door hit you on your way out, Lord and Lady Smythe, that's right, they are now both unemployed spys...now what do they do? Well not so fast, there is one final private assignment, but only one space for a layed-off spy, now Adrian and Sophia have to work together in order to compete for the prize. Or should they work on their marriage instead, the one that is slowly crumbling under the weight of grief and pain not shared. The one that while passion was there, love was never giving a chance. The one where a man and a woman didn't even recognize each other's heart until it was in each other's eyes...yes that marriage.
SG is a new to me author that drew me right in and never let go. The book was fun in places and extremely emotional about certain issues in others. I won't spoile that, you will have to read for youself to understand the true depths of the book. The book would have earned the 5th star easily if the ending hadn't been so abrupt and I certainly hope that we are in for a sequel as the book seems to have been left wide open.

I had some very mixed feelings about Lord and Lady Spy. The premise sounded fun in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith meets Regency kind of way. The execution - well it left something to be desired. Don't get me wrong there are some fun moments, and certainly some action packed ones and there are things to be liked but there were more things I had issues with.
For starters,
I didn't actually mind the premise but I thought there would be more time to see the main characters, Sophia and Adrian interact (before figuring out the other's "identity). And once things were found out I was sorely tempted to throw the book at the wall. Why? Because the two main characters were remarkably childish throughout a good portion of the book and really did not bring to mind "spy" more like "toddler" and "idiot" and "can-anyone-say-mood-swings?". These two were hot and cold and swung back and forth so fast I nearly got whiplash (if it were possible for a book to give you whiplash).
I mean one moment they were perfectly agreeable adults and then the next drawn into some competition that would only make complete sense to a 5 year old. Like having a mature conversation one moment and suddenly comparing each other's battle scars, because you know that's such the thing to do and having 4 gunshot wounds is so much more impressive then 3.
By the halfway point of the book I was tired so I took a break. I mean there wasn't a whole lot going on in terms of the story, a lot of back and forth sniping between the twobabies, I mean lead characters. Baby issues, and massive mood swings on both Adrian and Sophia's parts. Not to mention the bickering - just when it looked like they'd reach some sort of compromise they start going at it again. Honestly I didn't see the need, they worked well when not at each other's throats, but I suppose they had to get it out of their systems. The story wasn't particularly complex or mind blowing so I suppose something had to take up space. And the writing itself didn't flow as well as I would've liked.
The characters are a big part of why I am still not sure how I feel. I think I'm more neutral to the book than anything.
Let's start with Adrian, Lord Smythe and . He starts off as your typical, flat, male chauvinist character. I wanted to punch his nose. Or knee him in the balls.
"I am merely stating the obvious. You are a woman and should therefore have no part in the investigation. We are dealing with a murder, and this is a subject not fit for female discussion."
"You are my wife, and I will not have you involved in this work. You are to go home and wait for me there. Leave immediately."
Okay, logically I get that being 1815 this attitude is to be expected (and even accepted) so it wasn't a big issue. But given what else was happening in the book - he couldn't realistically expect saying that to work. I think Adrian was a bit more willing to compromise than Sophia in the book as time went on and he redeemed himself. Despite the fact that he came off as an ass in the first part. Even if he was contrary at times (especially early on). Like how he said nothing was more important than his work, and bored with his life at home yet claimed to have always been interested in Sophia.
As for his believability as a spy…I'm not quite certain I buy it. Adrian is not particularly good with people or in crowds. He is sufficient enough in defensive/offensive skills but that is a skill that can be picked up. He does have good observational skills but I don't particularly know what made him such a stand out spy as we're only told he was.
Sophia, Lady Smythe, is one of those you-really-want-to-like characters except for the fact that they drive you insane. She is generally likable. She can take care of herself, use a dagger with skill (though I do question somethings - like how she lost it in the end), she is clearly able to finesse information out of people, and able to observe. However she is also maddeningly back and forth/hot and cold. Not to mention her "nose itch" instinct drove me bananas. Her "intuition" is first introduced to us early on:
"And it was a feeling - her intuition. And Saint always listened to her intuition."
"Her instincts were to panic, to escape but her training took over."
Really? First she says she always listens to intuition (which throughout she interchanges with instincts) and then she shoves them down and sticks to "training" despite disobeying orders to be in that position in the first place?
"I--my nose itches."
"Your nose itches. Is that supposed to mean something to me?"
"It means something to me. I should trust my instincts."
"And what are your instincts telling you?"
"The man upstairs is Lord Liverpool."
Wow. Here we have a case of magic - instinct to identify a person, and a very specific person at that. Not just "danger" or something but a person.
This nose itch thing happens multiple times and really has no explanation. I didn't realize intuition/instinct could be so specific and it bothered me at times. Especially when some of the things she said was "intuition/instinct" were pure speculation on her part. But she can be observant and rather good with people.
Another thing that bothered me were her varied mood swings and personality shifts. Like about the baby. I mean am I supposed to believe a spy who tears up and/or freezes at the thought of pregnancy or the sight of a pregnant woman? It just didn't mesh with her character, especially as a cool and controlled, top-notch spy. And her huge trust issues (though not much of a surprise) did she have to keep bringing it up and jumping to conclusions? I preferred her when she was clear headed and kicking butt. I'm also not sure I trusted her sudden change of heart regarding pregnancy and sex, it just kind of hit from nowhere especially considering how hard and determined she was against it earlier in the book.
Either of them as spies, okay I can see it (you know, if I squint into the sun). Together they worked better than apart. But best of the best spies, I'm not sure I bought that. I mean if they were the best of the best why would they be let go from the group? Even if the group was downsized wouldn't they keep the cream of the crop?
As for the mystery well we found out exactly why, we can make our own theories. And the murderer got away but will probably be back. It's entirely plausible that Sophia and Adrian will be back to clear up their unfinished business in the future. I'm not sure I'll read it yet (maybe, because they were beginning to work together and they did this well - when they weren't in competition and verbal combat with each other).

This nose itch thing happens multiple times and really has no explanation. I didn't realize intuition/instinct could be so specific and it bothered me at times. Especially when some of the things she said was "intuition/instinct" were pure speculation on her part. But she can be observant and rather good with people.
Another thing that bothered me were her varied mood swings and personality shifts. Like about the baby. I mean am I supposed to believe a spy who tears up and/or freezes at the thought of pregnancy or the sight of a pregnant woman? It just didn't mesh with her character, especially as a cool and controlled, top-notch spy. And her huge trust issues (though not much of a surprise) did she have to keep bringing it up and jumping to conclusions? I preferred her when she was clear headed and kicking butt. I'm also not sure I trusted her sudden change of heart regarding pregnancy and sex, it just kind of hit from nowhere especially considering how hard and determined she was against it earlier in the book.
Either of them as spies, okay I can see it (you know, if I squint into the sun). Together they worked better than apart. But best of the best spies, I'm not sure I bought that. I mean if they were the best of the best why would they be let go from the group? Even if the group was downsized wouldn't they keep the cream of the crop?
As for the mystery well we found out exactly why, we can make our own theories. And the murderer got away but will probably be back. It's entirely plausible that Sophia and Adrian will be back to clear up their unfinished business in the future. I'm not sure I'll read it yet (maybe, because they were beginning to work together and they did this well - when they weren't in competition and verbal combat with each other).
Overall. It was okay, just not really what I was looking for and not particularly my thing but I didn't hate it.

I loved this book. I never saw the movie Mr & Mrs Smith so I don't know how closely it follows that particular storyline but I thought it was very well written. I loved both of the lead characters and I thought they were developed well. The action was exciting, the love scenes were steamy without being gross or sickeningly sweet.

Lady Sophia, also known as "The Saint", is a spy and has loved doing this work since she was a kid. Her father guided her to this point, and even though she has been married for quite some time, she loves the life of a spy, the danger and the intrigue. But when a fellow spy steals her plan to capture a traitor she is outraged, but then she learns that she will be getting retired, with Napoleon sent to Elba. The last thing she wants to do is return to her boring life, and average husband. Lord Adrian, has worked hard to become a well known spy, but after succeeding in his mission, his boss, tells him he needs to make a life with his pretty wife and get some hobbies. Adrian would do anything to get back into the business. When both Sophia and Adrian receive a note, to meet at midnight, neither one of them suspects, that both of them have been chosen to solve a murder investigation, and the one that wins, gets back into the Barbican group again. Adrian is shocked to learn that his wife, is a fellow spy and a pretty admirable one at that, and a woman!! At first Adrian and Sophia can barely stand each other, but as they work together to solve the murder, they start to fall in love... and will they choose a life of a spy or to be with each other...

When I recently had the chance to read Love and Let spy, I was beyond intrigued with the set up of the series, and I was just waiting on pins and needles to read Adrian and Sophia's story. From the beginning, you sense very strong similarities to the movie "Mr. and Mrs., Smith" and in fact there are many common denominators, that made this a fun and tantalizing read that kept me on the edge of my seat, and a page turner....PAGE TURNER!! Yep you heard me folks, a story to keep you guessing, laughing your head off, enough heat to send shills down your spine and a exciting plot to keep you more engaged than you can handle.
The story begins with seeing each side of Adrian and Sophia living their separate ,secret, spy lives. Then they are both being retired, and having to learn to be husband and wife again. But when they learn that both have been spy's, for the same group, for years, they take it out on each other. And what a hoot they were to see...I could watch these two go at it for hours. Adrian has worked very hard to get into the barbican group, and has loved every moment. He does care for Sophia, and misses the intimacy they had when they were first married, but missions he was sent out on, kept him from building anything substantial with her. Sophia is reluctant to give into the temptation that Adrian offers, she has suffered grief and pain, and even though she was kept busy with her spy work, she is afraid of getting hurt again by working with Adrian. Both Adrian and Sophia are very stubborn, talented, and tend to argue more than getting along, except in the bedchamber..then there is pure harmony and bliss. LOL What a adventure this story was, and I just couldn't get enough of it. I do love a good historical espionage romance, and Shana Galen is the queen of this genre. A story that will sneak its way into your hearts, and completely engrossing from beginning to end. A love story that comes to life with vivid detail, exciting scenes, wit evident on each page!! STIMULATING!!

There are some authors that do ‘angst’ romance well (i.e. Laura Kinsale); some that do ‘humor’ well (i.e. Julia Quinn); and then there’s Shana Galen, who, in my humble opinion, is so, so, very good and can do both so very, very well.
Lord Adrian Smythe is a very good spy, employed by the Barbican group, which is a branch of Home Office; but after a successful job, he’s forced to take an early retirement, and that does not sit well with our hero. After all, the life that awaits him is not something that he’s looking forward to. After five years of marriage to Lady Smythe, he’s yet to know this woman he married out of duty. On the other hand, his life as a spy is something he is extremely good at, something that he needs in order to define and absolve him, so he is determined to get himself reinstated and will do anything to that end.
Lady Sophia Smythe has been a spy since she was twelve years-old, and is likewise employed by the Barbican group, who, after her last and only failed job, is being forced into an early retirement. She has been living this double life for so long that her identity of a meek and submissive Lady Smythe persona is something that she is not sure she can deal with for the rest of her life, and as a daughter and sister of spies, she will do anything to get reinstated by the Barbican group.
Lord Liverpool’s brother is brutally murdered, and he decides that he will meet with two retired spies and ask them to investigate the murder, with a proposition that neither Lord nor Lady Smythe can refuse: only one of them would be reinstated! And with that, our hero and heroine are put in very close proximity of each other. The fun doesn’t stop as they’re always trying to outwit, outthink, and outdo each other. Working together also gives them the opportunity to get to finally know each other and to work through some issues that are painful to both.
The author pulls out all the stops in order to bring us a story full of mystery, adventure, and passionate and tender romance, with dialogue between Adrian and Sophia that will have you laughing out loud while keeping up with their antics!
For a fast paced, sensual adventure with a witty and entertaining couple that will bring tears to your eyes, LORD AND LADY SPY delivers BIG TIME!
This is my third book by this author, and by no means my last. I’m looking forward to her third book in the ‘Sons of Revolution’ series, ONCE A ROGUE, the follow up to THE MAKING OF A DUCHESS and THE MAKING OF A GENTLEMAN. I highly recommend all three books that I’ve read so far from Ms. Galen.

the sheer joy of winning this goodreads giveaway can not be expressed in mere words. imagine the childlike glee with which i checked the mailbox every afternoon - like ralphie and his little orphan annie secret decoder ring! also, imagine my immense displeasure when it finally arrived and i sliced my finger open tearing into the impressively sealed envelope.
after the bleeding stopped, i was appeased by the fact that it came with a free romance sampler. it's so cheestastic looking - i'm all a-quiver in anticipation of reading it!
oh, my other major gripe: the book came with a sticker that proudly proclaimed: SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR!
this was a lie. a shiny, silver lie. don't say a book is signed if it's not.i almost one-starred this on principle.
word to the wise: don't screw with a goodreads' reviewer's emotions!
that said, the book itself is a trashy delight. do not get me wrong. this is not shakespeare. or, if it is, it's only the dirty jokes.
and it's certainly not what jane austen had in mind when she wrote any of her novels.
instead, it's a regency mr. and mrs. smith! there's a lot of heaving bosoms and too-tight britches. but there's also a sexually-tense waltz and plenty of gun and sword fighting.
of course, most scenes are maudlin clamors for a baby (lady smythe has miscarried several times - which seems to come as a shock to her, despite the fact that her chosen profession involves getting shot on a fairly regular basis) and protestations of love. there's also a fair bit of creative problem-solving in order to prolong the gratuitous sex scene until the bitter end. that's cool. the "plot" seems to be thinly constructed around babywishin' and babymakin'...
but no one reads these things for the plot, do they???

A very entertaining book full of romance, action, suspense and mystery.
Lord and Lady Smythe are both spies, but neither knows the other one is! Once Napoleon is captured, their services are no longer needed and they both reluctantly go back to 'normal' life. Problem is, the two are practically strangers, even after being married for a few years.
The two discover the secret identity of the other after being summoned by the prime minister to help discover who murdered his half-brother. The reward? Whoever finds the murderer gets to go back to spying full time, something the both of them want... desperately. Do they two work together or against each other?
Through the course of the investigation, the two get to know each other, in more ways than one. The dialogue was hilarious and witty, as the two argued over whose method to use. The two have very different strategies when it comes to investigations, and the two must learn to trust the other.
Lady Smythe was quite the awesome character, if I do say so myself. She needed no protecting, and no one could order her around, not even her husband. In fact, at one point, she practically laughed in his face when he 'ordered' her to do something. Of course, what impressed me the most was how skilled she was in fighting and wielding a knife. This was no simpering miss!
I would guess that this will be a series by the way the book ended. I sure hope so, this book was a lot of fun!

This premise had so much potential: Mr. and Mrs. Smith set at the end of the Napoleonic wars. Sounds fun!
Heroine: A- Raised from girlhood by her father to be a spy (so at least there is one great male in this book). Confident, competent, a master of her craft. HOWEVER: she insists on calling her clear intelligence and keene observation skills "women's intuition" instead of giving herself credit for being the smart woman she is.
Hero: F Typical romance novel trope violent alpha male who abuses his wife. She cures him of his violent ways and makes him see her as a person. Let me throw up in my hands now. I threw the book across the room when he threatened to kill her if he discovered she had ever cheated on him.
Did not finish this. Simply frustrated by great plot, good heroine, and all ruined by thoroughly reprehensible "hero".
Heroine: A- Raised from girlhood by her father to be a spy (so at least there is one great male in this book). Confident, competent, a master of her craft. HOWEVER: she insists on calling her clear intelligence and keene observation skills "women's intuition" instead of giving herself credit for being the smart woman she is.
Hero: F Typical romance novel trope violent alpha male who abuses his wife. She cures him of his violent ways and makes him see her as a person. Let me throw up in my hands now. I threw the book across the room when he threatened to kill her if he discovered she had ever cheated on him.
Did not finish this. Simply frustrated by great plot, good heroine, and all ruined by thoroughly reprehensible "hero".
