Roald Dahl op zijn best
Roald Dahl schreef niet alleen kinderboeken, maar hij heeft ook veel korte verhalen geschreven voor volwassenen. In dit boek zijn vijfentwintig van deze verhalen gebundeld. Het liefst lees ik Dahls originele (Engelstalige) werk, maar toen ik dit boek tweedehands tegenkwam voor een paar centen kon ik het natuurlijk niet laten liggen.
De verhalen in deze bundel kenmerken zich door de excentrieke personages, de zwarte humor en de ironische – soms ronduit sadistische – plotwendingen.
Met name ‘De hospita’, ‘Op weg naar de hemel’ en ‘Mevrouw Bixby en de mantel van de Kononel’ behoren absoluut tot Dahls beste werk. Later in de bundel neemt de diversiteit aan verhalen een beetje af. Persoonlijk vond ik het fijn om verhalen van Roald Dahl af te wisselen met ander leesvoer.
Roald Dahl neemt de rust om een uitvoerig verhaal te vertellen waarbij veel details worden genoemd, maar de opbouw en schrijfstijl zorgen ervoor dat je toch geboeid blijft. Het taalgebruik is hier en daar wat oubollig, maar dat heeft zeker zijn charme aangezien de verhalen zich natuurlijk ook in de vorige eeuw afspelen.
De plotwendingen top. De meeste wendingen zie je wellicht wel aankomen, maar ik moet zeggen dat ik soms toch zeker wel ben verrast. Wat de eindes nog sterker maakt, is dat Dahl exact op het juiste moment stopt niet de drang heeft om de wending ‘uit te leggen’, zodat er geen afbreuk wordt gedaan aan het einde.
Kortom: een heerlijke bundel. Een aanrader voor iedereen die zwarte humor, excentrieke personages en ironische plotwendingen kan waarderen.

Losse verhalen zijn niks voor mij
Teminste niet deze. Roald Dahl is natuurlijk een fantastische schrijver, zeker voor kinderboeken. De verhalen zijn niet slecht of saai maar het lezen tussen de regels door is simpel weg niet mijn stijl. Elke zin heeft ongeveer een dubbele betekenis.

Erg grimmige verhaaltjes. Sommige simpelweg smerig, sommige erg origineel en spannend. Al heeft het me erg lang geduurd er doorheen te komen. Vooral jeugdsentiment bracht me hier naar terug.

Leuk om te lezen. Het ene verhaal is wat pakkender dan het andere. Vooral De butler was erg komisch!
