This tenth edition of a classic textbook, updated in November 2013 with a free, downloadable chapter on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), presents the critical issues and core challenges surrounding our health care system. Designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, it includes the contributions of leading thinkers, educators, and practitioners who provide an in-depth and objective appraisal of why and how we organize health care the way we do; the enormous impact of health-related behaviors on the structure, function, and cost of the health care delivery system; and other emerging and recurrent issues in health policy, health care management, and public health. To update this book with the rapid changes that have occurred in health care through November 2013, a separate chapter, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Supplement, is available to students and instructors as a downloadable PDF.

Well, I learned more than I thought from this class...because of this book not because of the class. Health and policy is just such a broad topic, that's why you can get an MPH. It is too much for one class or one book to give more than an overview.
Well, I was actually impressed with the amount of work that was placed in this book. Great work on connecting with the audience and the structure was easy to follow. Information was up to date and gives multiple points of views through fantastic examples and facts. Thank you for the educational information, Jonas and Kovner! This was a book I enjoyed reading for Health Care Seminar course.
Informative, but nauseatingly rife with Obamacare sycophancy. Hard to believe the authors objective, when so gushing about it; Chelsea Clinton even co-authoring a chapter.
Note that this is a textbook, and the rating should not be compared to my ratings on books written for entertainment.
Clear and concise text with well organized ideas and progression. Information is presented in different formats including graphs, charts, and well defined section headings. Scanning for specific information within a chapter is easy. -1 star for feeling out of date (10th edition, read in April/May 2013)
Average personal reading time without needing a break: 90 minutes
An informative look at the state of the health care system in the USA. Unfortunately, since it is such a changing field I expect this to be outdated in a year or less. If you have questions on how hospitals, physician practices, insurance companies, or government services operates this is a good first stop. The writing can by necessarily dry and full of acronyms but the topics are covered with great detail.
This was a required textbook for my Public Health Policy class. The chapters were interesting and well-written. The topics covered were timely and thorough. The text size was highly readable and the graphics enhanced the text. This was one the best formated textbooks I have read during my BSN program.
