VIVIDLY EVOKING IRELAND AND LIVERPOOL, RAINBOW'S END IS A WARM AND ENGROSSING SAGA FROM A RISING STAR. Tracing the stories of two quite diffrent girls: Ellen Docherty, in Liverpool, bringing up her younger sister and brother single-handedly, and Maggie McVeigh, in the Dublin tenements, finding a better life working for the Nolan family, and falling in love with Liam, the eldest son, RAINBOW'S END follows two girls on their struggle for happiness. But the First World War changes everything -and unearths a long-buried link between the families.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database.

Katie Flynn was born in Norwich and attended Norwich High School, where she was extremely happy and extremely undistinguished. Published at the tender age of eight, in Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories, she joined a Writers’ Circle as an adult, publishing short stories, articles, etc; only turning to novels in 1971 because the postal strike cut off her main source of income!
At first she wrote under several different names – Judith Saxton, Judy Turner, Lydia Balmain, Judith Arden – but her Katie Flynn books were a delight to write and proved far more popular than she had dreamed. She has now published nearly ninety novels, twenty-seven of which are Flynns. Her most recent titles are: Lost Days of Summer and Christmas Wishes.

1839 Christmas, Grainne Feeney and William McBride, high society lad, hold hands. But no sooner, the winter storm, takes along Grainne’s small shelter and two siblings.
At the same time, she is refused any help from McBrides’ as William no longer recognises her because of an accident during the storm.
.
Grainne with the baby bump and her siblings takes road to Dublin.

Later, two similar stories run simultaneously. One of Ellen, in Liverpool, bringing up her siblings single handedly. And another of Maggie, in Dublin, nurturing Mrs Nolan’s children.
Both have a naughty pair of twins to look after and young man, Tolly and Liam, to fall upon.
.
.
It is during World War I - when Maggie dies and Tolly falls for another girl, everything changes.
Ellen encounters Liam, and gradually link between the two families is uncovered.

Uplifting!!

Reminded me of my childhood in Bansha. The story was brilliantly interwoven between the families and the historical side with the war and the cost of that, both physically and emotionally. Lovely book.😊

Another heart warmer for me. The intertwining stories of Liverpool and Ireland and the history and events which shape the characters.

Many characters, a bit confusing but not a bad read. Unusual for a Katie Flynn book.

I found that there were slightly more characters in this novel than the usual Katie Flynn novel and found the leaping between two or three different families a bit confusing and found I had to refer to the back of the book every so often to keep myself right. Overall I enjoyed though
