Die Orangen des Präsidenten
Nasrija, Irak, 1989: Am Tag der letzten Abiturprüfung wird Mahdi zu einem Ausflug eingeladen. Sein Klassenkamerad Ali hat sich ein Auto ausgeliehen, und die beiden wollen das Ende der Schulzeit feiern. Doch es ist das falsche Auto, und Ali kennt die falschen Leute – die beiden werden ohne Anklage und Prozess inhaftiert.
Mahdi stehen zwei Jahre Gefängnisalltag bevor, Hunger, Folter, Grausamkeiten, Zynismus: Zum Geburtstag Saddam Husseins wird den Häftlingen eine Amnestie in Aussicht gestellt – doch dann bekommt jeder nur eine Orange als Geschenk.

Abbas Khider
11 books90 followersAbbas Khider was born in 1973 in Baghdad. At the age of seventeen, he was arrested for his political activism. Following his release in 1996, he fled Iraq and lived for several years in various countries with irregular refugee status. He has been living in Germany since 2000. Abbas Khider has received numerous literary awards and currently resides in Berlin.

Ein gut lesbarer, interessanter Roman. Es wird die Geschichte von Mahdi erzählt, der aufgrund einer Verwechslung im Gefängnis des Saddams Regime gerät. In Rückblenden erfährt man gleichzeitig, wie der Junge im Irak aufgewachsen ist. Seine Erlebnisse sind nüchtern in schlichter Sprache erzählt. Man kann es perfekt als Jugendbuch für die Schule empfehlen.

Combining scenes of visceral brutality and cruelty in Saddam's prisons and flashbacks forming a coming-of-age tale replete with beautiful, subtle imagery, this short but powerful novel gives the reader more than just a glimpse of the author's own experiences as it takes the reader to Iraq in the 80s and beginning of the 90s.

التقييم بثلاث نجوم لا يقلل حقيقة المعاناة بالطبع
لكن شعرت بأن الكتاب كان من منظور ومعاناة شخص واحد فقط ، لم تكن للشعب بمختلف تياراته الفكرية ومذاهبه ، لم تلامس معاناة السجون هناك بتفاصيلها التي لاحظت بأن الكاتب كان يتجنب الدخول والحديث عنها - ويحق له ذلك بالطبع - لكن كون ان هناك كتاب كان هناك فضول لم يُشبع وهذا ما لم يُكمل تقييمها بنظري.
لكن شعرت بأن الكتاب كان من منظور ومعاناة شخص واحد فقط ، لم تكن للشعب بمختلف تياراته الفكرية ومذاهبه ، لم تلامس معاناة السجون هناك بتفاصيلها التي لاحظت بأن الكاتب كان يتجنب الدخول والحديث عنها - ويحق له ذلك بالطبع - لكن كون ان هناك كتاب كان هناك فضول لم يُشبع وهذا ما لم يُكمل تقييمها بنظري.

Leider nicht so informationsreich wie ich mir gewünscht hätte... dachte es geht eher in die Richtung von Khaled Hosseini... war aber sehr einfach geschrieben und hat nicht viel aufarbeitet und mir nicht viel erzählt, was man nicht bereits aus den Medien und Nachrichten wusste. Schade

Harrowing (and partly autobiographical) story, told effectively enough, without either shying away from the horrors of Saddam's prisons (the big metaphorical one and the small literal one) or sensationalising them. I think the publisher may be hoping to sell it as a YA novel, going by the binding, and as such it's certainly no slouch. There are things in here that remain too undeveloped for my taste - Khider is fond of nodding to history, without ever doing much with it - and compared to, say, Hassan Blasim he only intermittently hits THAT spot. But the irony in the title runs throughout the whole book, from all the conquerors that have come and gone to the image of US soldiers retreating as Saddam takes back his country after the first gulf war. Prisoners are told Saddam's birthday is coming up, they're asked to celebrate it, with the understanding that they'll be pardoned... and their reward is one orange each. Gee, thanks.

"شك". كلمة من حرفين.كانت كفيلة بقلب حياة الفرد رأسًا على عقب.. وخصوصًا، إذا كان الشك في أمرٍ يمس نظام الطواغيت. كلمة "شك" ألقت بالمنسوبة إليه في حفرةٍ حافلة بالسجناء السياسيين بأحد السجون التي بُنيت في ظل الحكم العثماني للعراق وكان عباس خضر أو "مهدي حمامة"، هو أحد من اشتبه بهم ورمي به في العام ١٩٨٩م.
تأخذنا الرواية إلى بيتٍ من آلاف البيوت العراقية التي تضررت وفقدت وعانت من آثار الحرب العراقية الايرانية وحرب الخليج وحكم الطاغية. يرويها طفل كان في الثامنة من عمره حين بدأت الحرب الايرانية والتي استمرت لثمان سنوات. ذلك الطفل الذي فقد والده في تلك الحرب، والذي بيّن لنا حال الأسر العراقية ومدى تأثير الحرب على كل شيء في العراق ابتداءً من الفقد والخوف وصولًا حتى إلى "تربية الحمام". مرورًا بمدارس الأطفال التي تحولت إلى ما يشبه القواعد العسكرية لتدريبهم.
رواية قصيرة من عشرة فصول، فصلٌ في السجون الممتلئة بالمساجين السياسيين وما الذي يجري بها من تعذيبٍ وتجويع، ويتعبه فصل آخر عن الحياة والعائلة العراقية في ظل الحرب العراقية الايرانية وحتى دخول القوات الأمريكية عام ٢٠٠٣. كتبها عباس خضر باختصار وافٍ إلى حدٍ كبير؛ فبيّن بها لوعة الفقد وقذارة السجون وأثر الحرب على البسطاء. روايةٌ مؤلمة. ليست فريدة من نوعها لكنها جميلة. أعجبني سرد الكاتب واختصاره لكل هذه الأحداث بهذه الرواية القصيرة التي لم أتوقع أن تظهر بهذا الجمال. تألمت، ضحكت وشعرت بأحداثها. تستحق القراءة

Ich habe nicht besonders viel überdiesen Buch zu sagen… es war sehr interessant, ich habe viel üben den Golfkrieggelernt, aber es war auch schwer zu lesen (viel Folter, und auch viel Geredeüber Vergewaltigung). DenErzähler habe ich gemocht, und ich mochte auch, dass die Geschichte “zwischen 2Zeiten” geschieht. Man erfährt in einem Kapitel von Mahdi’s Kindheit, in dem folgendenvon seiner Gegenwart.Nur den Schreibstil habe ich nicht so sehr gemocht, aber mein Deutschist auch nicht besonders gut, also weiss ich nicht, ob ich Schreibstil richtigeinschätzen kann.

Eine bewegende und nüchtern erzählte Geschichte aus einer für uns absolut fremden und fernen Welt, in welcher der Golfkrieg wieder lebendig wird. Markantes Dingsymbol ist die Taube, die Mahdi in verschiedenen Etappen seines Lebens begleitet und auch die furchtbaren Haftszenen poetisch auffangen kann.

Interesting story, but just mediocre writing. Really disliked the timeline jumps; all they ever do is confuse me, especially in short books like this one.
There were a couple of really nice paragraphs here and there, more so towards the end, but overall there was no consistency.

Rather good. It gave me a unique window into the world of someone from Iraq during that time whilst also being a joy to read. I would recommend giving it a go.

Varje gång jag läser en (välgjord) skildring av krig och flykt mår jag först alltid väldigt dåligt och sedan tänker jag ”Det här måste alla läsa”. Exakt så gick det till den här gången också.
