我唸過最難的書 :)

Great study tool. This is the official textbook of the NTNU (a university in Taipei, Taiwan with a very respected Chinese as second language program). It is a good book if you are looking to learn to write chinese, not just speak it. It's not exactly easy, it took me a good while to go through all of it (many youtube videos are more fun for casually picking up a few phrases), but if you want a bit of structure it is worthwhile.

This is a great series. The workbooks, textbooks, and CDs all have tons of wonderfully written materials with a good pacing.

Pros: The book provides great explanations for not just vocabulary, but also grammar structure, walking you through which words go where. The pacing is good, and the workbooks (sold separately) will help cement your understanding of the language. The readings provide entertaining dialogues and conversations about Taiwanese culture, since this book is originally from Taiwan.

Cons: The one weakness of the book is the audio files. For starters, even though most of the vocabulary is Taiwanese Mandarin, the audio files have strong Beijing accents. However, audio recordings of this book are also available on YouTube, albeit from an older edition.

Important to note for anyone just beginning Chinese: This book only contains traditional characters, which are used in Taiwan and the Chinese SARs, as well as in overseas Chinese communities. If you want to learn simplified, choose another book.

In all, I'd highly recommend this series for anyone wanting to learn traditional characters.
