The Yorkshire author writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives a fairly happy existence with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire.
I have to admit that I am really enjoying these DI Angel books. The only thing I can’t stand about them is the stupidity and any lack of real concern for true justice by Chief Inspector Harker. Personally I wish the author would just leave him out of the books. If he is typical of these people in real life I truly feel sorry for the British.
He is tough, handsome, honest, scarcastic, & loves both his wife, Mary, & putting away criminals. I've read all the books up to this one with DI Angel in them & there isn't one I don't like. He also tries to be a hard case to his men, except they know it's a bluff & respect him. Thumbs up on all these books! So happy I have more to read.
I absolutely love reading the Yorkshire murder mystery series So much going on an easy read, DI Angel is a brilliant character and PC Ahmed and his comments make me laugh Book 16 I can’t wait for the rest to come out
That's the sort of book I expect from this author,he is so consistent in his writing , good plot, believeable characters, very enjoyable. Can't wait for the next one, let's hope it won't be long in coming .
Another great story featuring Inspector Angel who has his own unique way investigating the cases he deals with. This makes these books so readable.I am eagerly awaiting the next.
This book is not short but it’s extraordinarily compelling. It starts with a criminal mastermind carrying out a meticulously planned burglary. If he’d been running a commando unit his actions would be about the same. Detective Angel gets involved when an unusual theft is reported: 3 high end mahogany coffins. Then bodies start turning up in apparently unrelated crimes. An inventor is killed in a locked vault whose only entrance is an armored door and there are no other means of egress. It appears that he was killed by his own pistol wielded by a robot he had built himself. But Angel decides to test whether this is possible after the post mortem turns out that the first bullet to the brain would have killed him in less than 2 seconds and the other 2 could not have been fired before he hit the floor. The robot wasn’t able to aim fast enough for the other 2 shots so the idea of suicide or accident seemed improbable. Suspicion fell on the inventors wife, a successful model, but she’d been in London at a fashion show all night and the murder happened in Yorkshire so she had an ironclad alibi.
The story sucks you into a bizarre web of deceit and violence but has a great ending. The art object connection is the motive, although that’s not obvious until 3/4 of the way through. There are references to famous crime cases from as far back as the 1930’s, making the narrative rich in history as well. A good whodunnit and I didn’t guess the answer until the perp was behind bars and the CPS told angel there was not enough evidence for a conviction! Don’t start it near bedtime.
As with most of the Yorkshire Murder Mysteries it is an entertaining read, but seemed to drag more than the others. I point to ongoing Harker character.
A lot of the various series I read have an antagonistic relationship between the protagonist and his superior. I dislike most but Harker’s character is way old and ridiculous. As much as Angel hates it when Harker calls so do I hate when Harker is brought into a scene. Dump his character. He is the one constant I dislike in the Yorkshire Murder Mysteries, have him have a mental break down and go to a rubber room.
Another dislike is the overused similes. I’ve read a lot of authors who do similes well and despite doing them well, don’t over do it. Silverwood not only overuses them but uses ones that are dumb. I wish I would have noted some, perhaps next book, but I can’t get a picture or a feel of the simile. Not with Silverwood’s. Some are meant to get a laugh, but most leave me just groan, like I just heard a really dumb joke.
A little gripping and you may ask why do I continue reading. For the most part I like the the no sex, no vulgarity. Plus unless the series is a totally bad, I like to try and read the whole series. Yorkshire is not totally bad and outside of Harker and the metaphors is a good read.
The one humorous light-hearted character Mrs Buller-Price has been absent from the last several.
Send Harker to the rubber room, less and good similes and bring back Mrs Buller-Price and there would probably be more four star and less three star reviews.
I swore I wouldn’t read anymore Inspector Angel books, but despite finding the writing style irritatingly old fashioned I find the plots quite intriguing. This is no exception-with a gold plated nude statue of a beautiful woman who has born 10 children, a locked room murder and a gang that rips out the tongue of any informer. The style as with other titles in the series makes me feel that it could be set in the ‘50’s -Mary Angel has the inspector’s dinner on the table at 5.30,the team have weekends off and have never heard of Google-DS Flora Carter has to beg Angel to tell her the historical significance of a date. Final gripe, as others have said,Horace Harker is just a ridiculous character adding nothing to the stories.
An engaging, interesting and fast-paced yarn. DI Angel and his crew pursue not only the murderer of a famous inventor but the leader of the country-house gang. This is the eighth book in this series that I have read. Angel is quite a character: clever, quick-witted, dogged and always in a rush. He is not only a male chauvinist but treats PC Ahmed Ahaz as his personal lackey. Not nice traits. But he is human and underneath a gruff exterior he has a heart. A most compelling read.
It is interesting how Angel works a case...then something clicks in his mind and all the pieces fall into place. The steps he takes and the clues along the way only add to this series.
Oh Roger - you've given us yet another fabulous, cracking DI Angel saga. I can't get enough of him. As soon as I see another one has been released - I pause whatever I'm currently reading, to jump straight into your latest book.
I absolutely love the fact that there are several little separate mysteries, which Angel manages to link.
Extremely entertaining, jam packed with thrills & spills. Full of Angel's no nonsense, ingenious crime solving process. Thankfully without ever being a too deep, brain draining intensive bore! 😁
