A dazzling star compels Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar to begin a journey. From the bamboo forests of China to the hidden city of Petra, from the summits of Arabia to the searing sands of Ethiopia, the Magi will battle supernatural forces, treachery and the fist of Rome to reach Bethlehem. But with blood and betrayal their constant companions, the Magi wonder if they journey to destiny, or death?
Epiphany takes one of the most familiar stories in Western tradition, the journey of the three Wise Men, and transforms it into something breathtaking and entirely unexpected. Paul C. Harrington Jr. doesn't just fill in the gaps of the biblical account; he explodes it into a sprawling adventure that spans continents and cultures. From the bamboo forests of China to the rose-red city of Petra, from Arabian peaks to the scorching deserts of Ethiopia, Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar traverse a world that feels both ancient and vividly alive. What makes this book remarkable is that Harrington refuses to sanitize the journey. These aren't just wise men following a star. they're flesh-and-blood travelers facing supernatural forces, political intrigue, and the brutal reach of Roman power. Blood and betrayal shadow every step, and the Magi themselves wrestle with a haunting question: are they walking toward destiny, or their own destruction?
I just finished reading this on Kindle Unlimited, and wow, what an unexpected adventure. The book takes the familiar idea of the Magi and turns it into an epic, globe-spanning quest filled with danger, mystery, and supernatural tension. From bamboo forests in China to the scorching sands of Ethiopia, every setting feels vivid and alive, like you’re right there trekking beside them.
What I loved most was how the story blends history, mythology, and high-stakes drama. These aren’t the quiet, gentle wise men we usually hear about. Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar are tested constantly, facing betrayal, brutal forces, and even Rome itself. The sense of destiny versus doom hangs over every chapter, and it kept me turning pages way faster than I expected.
If you enjoy rich world building, heroic journeys, and a fresh take on a familiar biblical moment, this one is definitely worth picking up, especially on KU.
What a wonderful book! Our Christian Education director at our tiny church found this book to go along with Epiphany, so I grabbed it. I've always been somewhat fascinated with Epiphany and the three kings. Now I will no longer think of them the same way. The writing was so beautiful and made me feel the power and glory of the star leading them along this amazing journey. It was also a great adventure story. I'm not sure how I felt about the ending, but overall I really liked this story. (I read the paperback edition, but didn't see it on the list of editions)
