Histotechnology: A Self-Instructional Text

Rate this book
dvances in histotechnology continue to expand the capabilities of the histopathology laboratory, but also require continual study by practitioners to remain current. The second edition of Histotechnology; A Self-Instructional Text presents all the latest advances as well as the fundamentals that are critical to achieving the highest quality work.

Written as both reference and teaching tool Histotechnology; A Self-Instructional Text addresses the essentials of preparing histology specimens including staining and processing, laboratory safety issues, and immunohistochemistry in fourteen instructional units. Electron microscopy and enzyme histochemistry have been added to this edition to help histotechnologists preparing for the HTL(ASCP) certifying examination. Each unit presents the learning objectives of the section, explains and illustrates the technique, and then gives specific learning activities that will reinforce the information. Written as both a teaching tool and reference, the format also makes troubleshooting fast and easy.

Histotechnology is an excellent learning tool for histologic technic students, and for residents and pathologists seeking to expand their understanding of the technology used in the histopathology laboratory. It is equally well suited as a desk reference for the more common special staining techniques and their results.

I'm only adding this book to my shelves because I probably read through the miserable thing at least 5 times by the time I took my test, and I deserve credit for that.

This is a good textbook to read through if you are studying for your HT/HTL certification exam and is indeed a book that I recommend you purchasing. However I should give word of advice on a few points. First, there are flash cards and a self-assessment booklet that go hand and hand with this book that can really aid you in studying and retaining the material. That goes without saying however, second, as I took the HTL exam I noticed there were quite a good list of questions that gave me scenarios as to what I would do should a management style error occur in the lab or what a lab supervisor should do in the event of unspecified but conventional errors are encountered in routine Histopathology. The book DID NOT cover a good majority of those labelled predicaments. So my advice to you if you are planning on taking the exam is to gather as much useful knowledge in an actual lab setting as you can rather than just solely read a book on methodology that you have never seen for yourself first hand. There is a lot of ground to cover in this field and while this book aids really well in covering that ground, there is more work to do on your end.

So in conclusion, read through this book and consider purchasing the study flash cards and self-assessment quiz book, and get actual hands-on training in the labs. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions.

The first stop when studying for the ASCP exam. Every topic is laid out in a very well organized matter and the images are superb.
